A.N. Welcome back! I'm excited to share the next part of the story with you all. And I'm thrilled to say that we have some fan art, courtesy of the INCREDIBLE NightWolfRUNNER. She's done a beautiful Nutcracker-inspired image of Sakura and Kurama, and you can see it for yourself by checking out the cover art on Book 2. Please check it out, it's absolutely stunning!

Sakura-chan: Thanks, it's nice to know I've survived another year :) I'm not entirely sure how to answer your question though. Are you referring to which twin will be taken during the House of Four Dimensions, or further down the line?

Oh, I'm excited for the demon form too. Want to share your ideas? I'd love to hear them!

Wolfs child/DCD Gojira: Here you go. Have fun!

Hina714: You were right, but you've always been excellent at guessing. As for whether Sensui really cares, well... you'll find out when Haruki does. You're right, Sakura does have her work cut out for her. And I think you'll love what I have planned for Kaito's power trip!

Ghost of Magic: And I love reading your reviews. Lore reveals are definitely a lot of fun to write as well.

hw0134160: Yes, a lot of people figured it out but there's still more surprises to come. I won't lie, it's been a bit strange to finally write his real name instead of Scarface, even though I've known his identity since day one. I'm glad you loved the Sakura x Kurama moments, you'll definitely enjoy this chapter as well. I did miss Yusuke and the gang, but it was important that Sakura complete this mystery on her own. And there will be more of that as we go ahead into Book 3 and 4. Unfortunately, lockdown has been extended again, and the only one who's happy about it is my dog. I really hate Covid, but it is what it is. Thank goodness for my dog. It's really sweet that you were worried about me, but I honestly felt so guilty about posting late. I don't ever want to let my readers down.

Sarah: You know it! I've been single for a REALLY long time, and thanks to anime I'm not sure I'll ever settle for less. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing...

Kurama really is the best. And that comparison isn't just a throwaway line either...

One more slower chapter before we get back into the action. There's quite a bit of romance and some fun character moments for you all. Enjoy! In the meantime, please make sure you follow, favourite, and PLEASE REVIEW!

I don't own YYH, just my OCs.

Chapter 3

At last, the mystery was solved. Everything made sense. Sakura remained on the floor with Kurama's arms keeping her from falling apart.

"Scarface… he's really Haruki. Now I understand what he meant,"

"But how?" Koenma squeaked. "How can you be so sure, Sakura? This photo is at least twenty years old!"

Sakura felt numb. "There's the physical resemblance, of course, but there were some things he said to me. Cryptic remarks,"

Kurama gently took her face in his hands. "Like what, my love?"

"When I fought him in the Dark Tournament," Sakura gulped at the memory. "He said he had a complicated past,"

Koenma looked impatient. "Oh, well that's irrefutable evidence! The case is closed!" he snapped sarcastically, but Kurama silenced him with an acid-filled look.

"There is more than that, Koenma," Kurama said sternly. "He was around the correct age, and he was always in close proximity to Toguro. The few times I was near him I could sense his drive and hate. But Kura, how did Sakyo play into all this?"

Sakura shut her eyes. "Scarface… I mean, Haruki. I asked him why he was so loyal to Sakyo. And he just said you can't help but be loyal to one who saves you from a fate worse than death. Those were his exact words,"

"Sakyo must've been responsible for sparing him," Kurama sighed. "We can only guess at the specifics, but it does sound plausible,"

Koenma looked grave. "Either way, I suppose it doesn't really matter. He's gone now. Died when the stadium fell,"

"Kurama, don't you remember how desperate he was at the end? The way he begged to die with Sakyo?" Sakura murmured. "I've never seen anything like it. In his eyes, he was just a frightened child crying out for help,"

Kurama nodded and held her tighter. "It also fits with Master Shin's notes on the boy," he indicated towards the diary. "Naive, protective, quick to form attachments. Whatever happened, he must've considered Sakyo to be his saviour, in a way. That explains the blind loyalty,"

"It explains everything," Sakura picked up the photo. "The hate, the fear, the secrecy around his identity. They must've known from the beginning that I was Master Shin's apprentice,"

Sakura held on to Kurama and began sobbing. "The whole time, he was right there in front of me, and I never realised. How could I be so blind?"

"But you weren't, sweetheart," Kurama said softly.

Sakura looked up in astonishment. "What do you mean?"

"He's right, Sakura," Koenma piped up. "First of all, you weren't even aware of Master Shin's students, let alone what happened to them. And secondly, you were the one to show him mercy at the end. Remember?"

Kurama nodded. "Exactly, my hana. Who knows? That was likely the first act of kindness he'd experienced in years. You granted his wish,"

"I… I guess so," Sakura wiped her eyes. This was so much to take in all at once. "Still, maybe if Master Shin had interacted with him. Who knows what might have happened?"

Sakura stared at the photo again. She brushed her fingers over their faces, frozen in time. That chubby-cheeked little boy, so innocent and trusting, not knowing what he would become. Not knowing the horror that would befall him and his friends. That was probably what sickened her most. He was just a five year old child. She could only imagine the horrors he might've been subjected to.

Koenma shook his head. "No, Sakura. I think it worked out better this way," he said rather gently. "At least Shin never had to see what became of his student. And we have no idea how Haruki would've felt towards his old teacher, or if he'd even remember. He might've been resentful, brainwashed or any number of things. And…" Koenma hesitated. "After all the torment he caused you, I think Shin would've been finished either way,"

The truth of Koenma's words almost knocked Sakura flat on her back. Anger swelled up in her heart, and she tossed the picture aside.

I can't forgive him.

Koenma was right. This was still the person who'd been a willing and eager participant in everything Sakyo had planned. He'd threatened her twin and her friends. He'd stalked her. He'd attacked her in the ring, then immediately ambushed and dragged her to his boss to get DNA for that awful woman. Whatever Haruki's story might've been, did that automatically erase or launder everything he'd done?

The short answer was no. It absolutely did not.

"So now what?" Sakura's voice was barely above a whisper.

"You don't have to do anything, love," Kurama answered promptly. "Your part in this is over,"

Koenma nodded. "You solved the mystery, Sakura. It might not have been the happy ending we wanted, but it's still an answer. I doubt we would've ever found those documents if you hadn't gone back to the garden," he sighed deeply. "The only thing left to do is tell Master Shin that he'll find all of his students waiting for him on the other side,"

"Koenma," Sakura looked up. "I know I can't see Master Shin, but will you please give him a message from me before he moves on?"

The toddler prince looked sad. "Of course, Sakura. Anything you like,"

"Ok," Sakura's mind was racing. What could she say? This was the one chance she had left. The last time she could ever communicate with the telepathy master who had helped her so much.

"Tell him…" Sakura faltered. "Tell him that I'll never forget him. That he was the father figure I needed, and I'll spend the rest of my life keeping the promise I made," She was determined to hold back her tears, but they were forming again. "He was the greatest teacher. I can never thank him enough for everything he did. And I'm so, so sorry that I couldn't save him,"

Kurama helped her stand. "Thank you, Koenma. I'll take it from here,"

Sakura barely registered Kurama leading her out of the castle. Her mind just wouldn't focus. But if there was anything to take comfort in, it was this. Sakura knew her master's soul could finally rest, and be reunited with the children he'd lost. He didn't have to suffer anymore.

It was something, at least. A small flicker of hope, like a tiny candle. She looked at the Gate of Judgement one more time, then travelled back down to Genkai's estate to find her waiting for them.

"Well?" She raised an eyebrow. It had been a few hours, but Genkai didn't look like she'd moved.

Sakura's chest began to ache. She didn't know how on earth to explain what they'd uncovered, but Kurama swiftly took control.

"Genkai, the mystery has been solved…"

Numbly, Sakura stood up and quietly stepped out of the room. She didn't want to hear the story again. Once outside, her mind began pondering the void left behind by Master Shin.

Now what?

The question was still unanswered. Who would teach her now? Who would help her nurture the skills her late master unlocked?

"Kura?"

She turned around and smiled. "Yukina,"

The ice maiden was carrying a mug of tea. "I heard Kurama telling Genkai what happened. He asked me to come sit with you. Are you going to be ok?"

Sakura took the cup from her friend and smiled. "I will be, eventually. I just… I just wish there was something more I could have done,"

With a sigh, she sat down. "We only got back yesterday, and I haven't had time to really process everything that happened. Honestly, I think it's something I'll be trying to work through for a while. This is just an extra bombshell, you know?"

"I wish my healing powers were enough for your mind, Kura," Yukina said rather sadly. "But I promise, I'll always be there when you need me to help,"

"Just sit with me," Sakura said quietly. "Having a friend here is all I need right now,"

Yukina smiled and joined her on the ground. "Of course,"

The girls sat in silence for a few minutes, before Sakura lowered her cup. "Yukina, there's something I've been wanting to ask you,"

"What's that?"

Sakura closed her eyes and felt the warmth of the sun on her skin. It was late afternoon and there wasn't much daylight left, so she might as well enjoy it.

"Will you tell me about the Ice World? Your home?"

"I'd love to," Yukina's eyes lit up, and she began describing her world to Sakura.

The next half hour flew by as Sakura listened to Yukina talk. The sun was beginning to set when Kurama came out to find the girls.

"Kura? Genkai would like to see you one more time before we leave,"

"Sure," Sakura went to get up, and immediately felt Kurama's strong arms wrapping around her.

It's all going to be alright, my hana. The only thing you have to do now is focus on your own healing. Focus on building your own life.

Sakura gave him a small smile. The only life I want is one that includes you, Kurama.

He smiled back, and kissed her forehead. Better not keep Genkai waiting.

Sakura headed back to find Genkai staring out the window once more. "I suppose Kurama told you what happened,"

"He did," Genkai sighed deeply. "I must say, this is not the outcome I expected, and I certainly didn't think we'd have the answer so quickly. However…"

The old woman turned around with a stern look. "Don't you dare blame yourself for any of this, Kura. Hear me?"

Sakura was slightly taken aback. "I wasn't planning on it -"

"Kurama's worried about you, and frankly, I agree. So listen to me very carefully, Missy. What happened to Master Shin is not your responsibility. And neither is what happened to Haruki. By finding those hidden papers in the garden, you solved a twenty year mystery, and helped a tortured soul find peace. Even if you had figured out the boy's identity, I doubt it would've changed anything. You've done all you can do. You don't need to feel any guilt. Understand?"

Sakura blinked back the tears in her eyes and nodded slowly.

"Furthermore," Genkai looked solemn. "Kurama also said he's given you the option of erasing your memories,"

"I… yes, he did. Last night," Sakura bit her lip. She'd almost forgotten about that, after all the twists and turns of the day. "Honestly, I'm not sure what to do, Genkai. I didn't really have much of a chance to think about it -"

Genkai held up a hand. "Answer me this. Without over analyzing anything, do you actually want to forget?"

Sakura didn't answer, but Genkai kept talking. "You have an opportunity to enhance your training here, to push yourself to new heights and be ready for the next challenge. Remember what I said earlier, about using your anger for good? If you focus all your energy and emotion into your own well-being, there's no telling what you could accomplish,"

Sakura paused before answering. "I know those memories won't ever go away on their own. What are you suggesting, Genkai?"

"It's up to you, but my advice is not to do anything for the time being," Genkai replied. "Except for one thing,"

"What's that?"

Genkai smiled. "Shin told me about the last promise you made him,"

Again, Sakura froze. That's right, she'd promised to survive the tournament, and she had. No, it was more than that. She'd promised to live.

Keep moving forward.

That's what she'd told herself while escaping Elder Toguro. And there was also the last thing Master Shinsuke had said to her.

"Run, and don't look back!"

Had she misunderstood those words entirely? Living meant more than existing. It meant more than just a beating heart.

"The tournament's barely over, Sakura," Genkai seemed to know what the young girl was thinking. "Give yourself a chance first. Give yourself permission to heal, and move forward with everything you've experienced up til now. Wouldn't that be a better option than just running away from it all?"

The girl turned away. "I don't ever want to take the easy way out, Genkai. That's not who I am,"

"One of the many reasons you captivate me," Kurama appeared in the doorway. "It sounds like you've made up your mind, my love,"

Sakura looked down. "I don't know about that, Kurama. But I do know that I want to try and find a way forward first, and really deal with what happened instead of keeping it bottled up,"

His smile was making her weak. "And I'll be with you every step of the way,"

"These things take time, Kura," Genkai said sagely. "But I'm more than optimistic. And I think it would be very helpful for you to continue your training with me. What do you say?"

Sakura smiled. "I say absolutely, Master Genkai,"

After a farewell to Yukina, and the promise of an imminent return with Yusuke and Kuwabara, Sakura and Kurama left the estate.

They were halfway to the train station when Kurama stopped and looked at Sakura.

"I… am so very proud of you, sweetheart," he said softly.

Sakura brushed her damp eyes. "What did I do to deserve you?"

Kurama's soft lips covered hers. Existing, my precious flower.

I love you.

Sakura's mind was spinning. She seized Kurama's jacket and pulled him closer. He was hers. This unbelievably beautiful man was really hers…

Kurama was burning with desire. He wanted Sakura. He wanted her so badly. And she wanted him too. He could sense it. It was obvious by the way her lips were attacking his mouth, the sharp breathing, the rhythm of her body pressing against his own. She was so beautiful, so delicate. Every fibre in his being wanted her. His body, and his soul.

His hand twisted in Sakura's hair, and she started going limp. Kurama kissed her harder, and felt his erection return. Under the cover of darkness, it would be so easy to sweep her away into some secluded area, lay her down on the ground and…

Stop. You need to stop, right now. Control yourself. Don't frighten her.

Kurama tenderly broke the kiss and held her close while pushing Yoko's influence as far away as possible. How could he think such a setting was appropriate for their first time? And after everything she'd been through, no less. Not just the tournament, not just those horrific experiences she'd had in the past, but the explosive secrets they'd uncovered today. It wasn't right.

Sakura was panting. "Guess I got a bit carried away," she looked sheepish.

You aren't the only one.

Kurama repressed the urge to laugh. "It's alright, my love," he kissed her cheek. "There's no hurry. However, we still have a few days before school starts again, and there's something else I would like to do…"

"Go on?" Sakura's heart was pounding.

He took her hand and started leading her towards the station. It was time to go home. "My mother is most anxious to meet you…"

Sakura stopped dead in her tracks.

Kurama stayed at the Urameshi apartment as long as he possibly could before forcing himself to obey Sakura's insistence that he needed to go see his mother and she would be absolutely fine without him. Likewise, Yusuke had maintained that he would make sure Sakura stayed safe during the night once Kurama had explained all that had transpired, at Genkai's and in Spirit World.

He trusted Yusuke, but all the same, Kurama loathed having to leave his precious flower. It took all his will to begin the journey home.

He just had to make the short walk from the train station to his house. But every step reminded him that he was getting further and further away from the girl he loved. It seemed the more time he spent with Sakura, the harder it got to be apart from her.

I just want to be with her, every moment.

Kurama checked his watch. 10pm. Most likely everyone would be asleep. He opened the front door quietly so as not to wake anyone, but the light was still on in the living room.

Shiori was curled up on the couch with a book. There was a pot of tea and two cups on the coffee table. She looked up as Kurama entered.

"Mother? I didn't think you'd still be awake,"

"I got home a little earlier today, so I wasn't as tired," She put her novel down and smiled at her son. "I just made tea. Would you like some?"

Kurama smiled back. "Sounds wonderful," He sat down next to her and poured himself a steaming cup.

Shiori watched him. "I take it that you had a nice day with Sakura?"

"Indeed I did. I'll be seeing her again tomorrow,"

Shiori could see the joy in her son's eyes from a mile away. Frankly, it was infectious and warmed her heart in ways she couldn't describe. She'd never seen him look so utterly content, never.

"You never answered my question last night," Shiori grinned.

Kurama knew what she meant, but decided to play dumb just for the hell of it. "And what question would that be, Mother?"

"When are you bringing Sakura over so I can meet her?"

Kurama smiled. "I told her you aren't working, so she was hoping tomorrow afternoon?"

"I don't see why not. Does she drink tea?"

"Yes, but Mother…" Kurama took a breath. "There are some things you need to know about Kura. For one, she's extremely nervous about meeting you…"

Without giving away too many details, Kurama explained the skeleton version of Sakura's less-than-ideal living situation, and her resultant trauma.

"Oh dear," Shiori pressed a hand to her mouth when he'd finished. "How awful,"

"...So you understand, Mother?" Kurama said at last. "Sakura has spent the majority of her life essentially raising herself. She's really only had her twin, and isn't accustomed to people accepting her,"

Shiori nodded. "Of course, Shuichi. But really, there's no need for Sakura to be afraid. I'm sure we'll get along just fine,"

"I know, Mother," Kurama said earnestly. "I'm sure you will as well. But like I said, Sakura's circumstances are a delicate situation. And I… just wanted to tell you in advance,"

He knew Shiori would love Sakura. The only problem would be getting Sakura to realise that.

Just knock, damn it!

Sakura's shaking hand was inches from the door. She couldn't bring herself to do it. Kurama's mother, the one he'd been willing to die for, lay behind the barrier.

What if she doesn't like me? What if she thinks I'm not good enough for Kurama… I mean, Shuichi? Oh crap, that's another thing that could go wrong! What if I totally screw this up? Maybe I should just go home…

She almost did. She was starting to back away when the door opened slowly.

Kurama stood there with a raised eyebrow and a knowing look on his face.

Are you going somewhere?

Sakura's face burned. I'm… just a little nervous is all.

Kurama took a step towards his flower. That's understandable. He cupped her face. But I have no doubt that my mother will absolutely adore you, my hana.

He'd sensed her arriving, and the anxiety she felt. But the sight of her made his heart swell.

Mine.

Sakura was standing at the door with her hair in a half-ponytail and she wore a violet knee-length dress with a scoop neckline. Of course, Yukina's hiruseki pendant was around her slender throat. She looked so desirable. So very beautiful.

"My mother is waiting for you, love. It'll just be the three of us,"

"Ok," Sakura breathed. "I'm ready,"

Kurama took Sakura's arm and drew her inside. "Mother?" he called, leading Sakura towards the living room.

Shiori was seated on the couch, waiting for her. Sakura instantly felt terrified, but Kurama squeezed her hand and stepped forward.

"Mother, I'd like you to meet Sakura,"

Shiori looked up at her son, and saw his girlfriend standing beside him for the very first time. Shuichi had already told her that Sakura was the twin sister of that nice boy he'd brought along to the hospital, but she was instantly struck by the girl's beauty. Slender and dainty with shiny black hair, round chocolate brown eyes and a shy smile.

Shiori stood up to greet her. "Hello, Sakura,"

Sakura was almost knocked over by the warmth and kindness radiating from this woman. It definitely wasn't something she'd ever felt in Atsuko's presence.

"I'm very pleased to meet you, ma'am," Sakura took a shaky step forward and bowed respectfully.

"Likewise, dear. Won't you have a seat?"

Sakura held out the shopping bag in her hands. "I brought some cake along,"

"Here, I'll take it," Kurama said immediately. He ushered Sakura to sit down on the other couch and took the bag to the kitchen.

Sakura glanced around the room. Her throat grew even tighter. Everywhere she looked, the walls were plastered with photos of Shiori and her son. Kurama never had to doubt how his mother felt. He never had to wonder if she resented his presence.

Must be nice.

Sakura blinked to regain clarity, and turned to Shiori. "You have such a lovely home, ma'am,"

"Thank you, Sakura," Shiori looked warmly at the young girl her son was so smitten with. "I hear Yusuke is your twin brother. Is that how you came to meet Shuichi?"

"Yes, ma'am," Sakura nodded. "Yusuke introduced us,"

Shiori smiled again. She could tell the poor girl was trying to hold back her anxiety. "It's alright, Sakura. You can call me Shiori,"

Sakura flushed slightly, but visibly relaxed when Kurama entered the room.

"I brought some tea, Mother,"

"Thank you, Shuichi. That was very thoughtful," Shiori took a sip and surreptitiously watched her son's behaviour. In his eyes, she saw profound love and adoration.

Sakura navigated the initial small talk with relative ease thanks to Shiori's warmth. It was easy to see why Kurama was so devoted to her. She couldn't help feeling calm in the woman's company.

"So, Sakura," Shiori lowered her now empty teacup. "I hear you're in your final year of middle school. Have you decided what high schools you might apply for?"

Sakura nearly spilled the rest of her tea.

Crap! I'm so bad at questions like this!

"I'm still working that out, Shiori," she said slowly. "My homeroom teacher believes my grades could be high enough to get a scholarship of some kind, but I'm considering all my options,"

Kurama took the tea from her trembling hands. "You have time, Kura. You don't need to worry about your future just yet,"

Shiori didn't know much about Sakura's history, but she was aware that the girl had endured neglect and abuse. Perhaps that was why she was so jittery.

Poor thing. She seems very sweet underneath all that fear.

Her maternal instincts were telling her to give Sakura a gigantic hug, but she suppressed the urge. Too soon.

"That's right, Shuichi," Shiori nodded. "What would you say is your favourite subject at school?"

Sakura hesitated for a second. "I've always loved art,"

"Mother!" Kurama said a little too enthusiastically. "You should show Sakura your work!"

"Work?" Sakura tilted her head. "Are you an artist, Shiori? I'd love to see,"

Shiori laughed lightly. "It's just a hobby, really. But I do enjoy it,"

She stood up and motioned for them to follow. Sakura followed Shiori to a small room off the kitchen. It seemed to be a home office of sorts.

"See?" Kurama was the first to point out the broken ceramics Shiori was working on. "Mother has a fondness for Kintsugi,"

Sakura gasped. The art of mending broken pottery with gold. "Shiori, it's beautiful,"

"Thank you, dear," Shiori trailed her fingers over the most recent piece. "Like I said, it's just a hobby. But the concept of Kintsugi has always spoken to me. The idea that beauty can be enhanced by flaws,"

Kurama felt the inside tremor of Sakura's heart. And that wasn't all. He could feel Shiori's gaze.

Sakura looked down at the ceramic, and Kurama took advantage of that to steal a glance at his mother.

"Shuichi, would you mind refilling the kettle? I'm sure Sakura would like more tea,"

Shiori made a very small gesture towards the door with her head, then smiled in Sakura's direction. Her meaning could not have been more plain.

Give us a moment alone.

"Of course, Mother," Kurama smiled and backed out of the room.

Wait, don't go! Sakura looked almost beseechingly after him.

You have nothing to worry about, Kura. Trust me.

Sakura felt a gentle hand on her shoulder. She turned and saw Shiori's kind face.

"Sakura? Are you feeling alright, dear?"

"Yes," Sakura couldn't stop her voice from shaking slightly. "I suppose I'm just a little overwhelmed. You might say I'm not used to seeing a normal family. I'm sorry,"

Shiori looked sympathetic. "Don't apologise. Shuichi didn't say too much, but I know you've been through a lot,"

"Shuichi is certainly lucky to have you," Sakura chuckled ruefully.

Shiori surveyed the young girl for a moment. "You know, there's really no such thing as a normal family, Sakura," she said gently. "And it certainly isn't anything to be ashamed of. The only thing I'm concerned about is my son's happiness. And I can honestly say he's never been happier since you came into his life,"

Sakura felt brave enough to meet Shiori's eyes. "I know how young we are, Shiori," she whispered. "But I can promise you that I love Shuichi with all my heart. He's saved me in every way that a person can be saved,"

Shiori couldn't resist any longer. She wrapped her arms around Sakura. "You know, you make me think of Kintsugi, in a way. When something is broken, it can be fixed and made even more beautiful than it was before,"

Tears filled Sakura's eyes. "Thankyou, Shiori," she managed to say.

"I mean it, dear. I can see what a beautiful person you are, inside and out. Welcome to the family,"

From the hall, Kurama listened with pure joy.

Haruki's eyes were glued to the screen. He rewound the tape, and played the moment again. Sakura, in the ring against Shishiwakamaru, that elegant flying leap across the ring, that flawless spin kick in her opponent's stomach, and that declaration.

"You don't know anything about me, Shishi. You're not worth my fear. Now let's dance!"

Again, he rewound the footage. He would never get tired of that moment. The way she overcame the fear when Shishi had her pinned. That defiance, after everything she'd been through.

He reached out and traced his finger over the screen. The way she moved in that outfit was simply mesmerising.

What ARE you, Sakura Urameshi? I'm going to find out.

Haruki skipped towards the end of the fight, when Sakura flipped Shishi over her head and onto the ground.

"No more. Enough of your talk, Shishi! Let's end this!"

Sakura was stronger than Sakyo or anyone had realised. She'd been well trained, but it was more than that. She'd somehow found the resolve to return from that moment of panic. But how? No human could.

You are not human, Sakura. And I will uncover your secrets, no matter what I have to do.

Haruki began fast-forwarding to the next fight, the last one on the tape and the one which had changed his mind about the girl. He'd been avoiding it til now until he'd felt ready to analyse the match properly. He wanted to view it through the lens of the enlightenment Chapter Black had given him. Now that he knew the truth about humans, he was more positive than ever that Sakura Urameshi was not one of them.

"Haruki. It's time to continue your training, my boy,"

Haruki turned around. Sensui was standing behind him with his arms folded and a smirk on his face.

"Of course, Mr Sensui. I'll come right away, sir,"

Sensui took a few steps towards the screen and observed the frozen image of Sakura trapped in the Shadow Cage while Akumu roared with laughter.

"You're still watching the tape, I see,"

Haruki nodded. "I will continue to watch it until I've learned everything possible about the girl,"

Sensui smiled. "But you haven't watched the last fight in full yet, have you?"

Haruki looked down. "No, I was just about to,"

"Come and train for a while first, Haruki," Sensui placed a hand on the boy's head. "Watching her fight is all very well, but you still have much more to learn. You want to be ready, don't you? Ready to understand what she knows?"

Haruki nodded vigorously. "Yes, sir," he said earnestly. "We need to find her, Mr Sensui. She's no human. I need to know what she really is,"

"I told you, my boy. They'll come to us, and you'll get your answers from Miss Urameshi. You'll learn everything you want to know. But you need to prepare your body and mind for what's coming,"

He tilted the boy's face upwards and looked him in the eye. "The secrets will be beyond your current capacity, Haruki. Trust me. This will not be in vain,"

Haruki hesitated. "Beyond my current capacity? But I'm stronger than she is!"

"Is that uncertainty I hear, Haruki? Don't tell me you are having doubts about what needs to happen?"

"No, Mr Sensui!" Haruki gasped. "I have not wavered from the path! I know all humans must die. Chapter Black has shown me the truth,"

Sensui knelt in front of his young minion. His voice softened. "Do you know why I showed you Chapter Black, Haruki?"

The boy shook his head. His eyes were crying out for knowledge. "Tell me, Mr Sensui. I want to know everything,"

Sensui smirked. "Because you are one of the chosen few, destined to help me rid the world of human depravity. We were brought together under divine purpose. You know the cause of all misery and hardship. You want to make them all pay for what you suffered, don't you? It was because of the old man's failure that you were tortured for all those years. You told me so yourself. It was humans that caused your misery, humans that etched every scar on your body,"

Haruki hissed and began the old habit of obsessively rubbing the scar above his eye. He'd never forget the day he received it….

"Useless sack of DIRT!"

Tatsuo's whip struck Haruki's already bleeding back. The little boy barely stopped himself from screaming, but that only seemed to make the guard angrier.

Tatsuo seized the boy's hair and dragged him upright. "Filthy demons! Why does your kind even exist?" he growled in his ear. "All of you should be exterminated, that's what!"

Haruki knew the guard was trying to get a reaction, so he stayed silent. He would not give Tatsuo the satisfaction of hearing him cry out.

"Not in the mood to talk are we? Well, I'm sure you'll find your tongue soon enough,"

Tatsuo dealt the child a swift kick in the ribs, then reached into his uniform and pulled out a talisman card.

Haruki froze. "Mr Tatsuo… please don't!"

Tatsuo's grin widened. "That got your attention, didn't it Hisuru?"

He nodded to the other guards. "You know what to do,"

They surged forward and in seconds, Haruki felt strong hands holding him down.

Tatsuo brought the card dangerously close to the young apparition's skin. "I'll admit, you're tougher than most of the filth I've been in charge of over the years," he snickered. "But I wonder how long you'll be able to stop yourself from screaming when this touches you?"

The talisman card was slowly and deliberately pressed just above his eye, and Haruki could feel white-hot agony almost instantly. He smelled his own burning flesh.

In the corner, the other captive apparitions were shrinking as far away as possible. None of them dared make a sound, or they'd be next.

Haruki couldn't hold it in any longer. He screamed a terrible howl of misery and pain, while the guards laughed.

Why? Why was this happening to him?

The boy opened his eyes to find Sensui's hand on his shoulder.

"I'm sorry, Mr Sensui. I lost control for a moment," He kept rubbing the burn mark. "It won't happen again,"

"It's alright, Haruki," Sensui's voice was gentle. "Don't blame yourself. Instead, turn your anger on the humans who tormented you. When the tunnel is complete, they'll be gone. And nobody will ever suffer as you did again,"

"Yes, Mr Sensui. I am ready to continue my training,"

Sensui watched the boy struggle to his feet. "You have begun walking the path of enlightenment, Haruki. Do not allow anything to stray you from it,"

"No, sir," Haruki bowed his head. "I will never stray from the path,"

Sensui smiled again. "Good. I am sure you will work hard today, my boy. And then, you must show me the tape. It will be invaluable while we prepare our defences,"

"Of course, Mr Sensui. Anything you ask,"

At the sound of a knock, Sakura opened the front door expecting to see Keiko, but instead she was greeted by Kurama's beautiful face.

"Kurama!" Her face lit up.

He pulled her into his arms and kissed her. "How are you my love?"

"Fine, but what are you doing here? Isn't it your first day back at school too?"

Kurama smiled. "It is, but I thought it might be nice if I walked with you. I trust you don't object?"

"Of course not," Sakura's knees went weak from the look he was giving her. "Just give me a moment to grab my things, and I'll be right out,"

Sakura flew back to her room and picked up her bag. She heard the shower turning off, and called out to her brother.

"Yusuke, I'll meet you at school, alright?"

Sakura hurried back to where Kurama was waiting, and instantly found her way into his embrace. He tilted her face up and observed the dark circles under her eyes, covered with hastily applied concealer.

"Tell me, Kura. Did you get any sleep at all last night?"

"A few hours," she admitted. "I was fine until the nightmares woke me up,"

Kurama sighed. "I'm sorry, love. I should have been there,"

Sakura waved it off. "It's not your fault, Kurama. Really. I can handle it,"

"Would you like to grab some tea before school?" he smiled.

"I'd love to,"

With hot drinks in hand, the happy couple walked towards Sarayashiki Junior High. They didn't need to say a word. The silence was enough, and Sakura felt nothing but joy being at Kurama's side.

Once at the school gate, Sakura stopped. "I guess this is where I have to go on alone," she joked.

"Shall I meet you here after school, Kura?" Kurama moved a strand of hair from her face. He didn't seem to realise that every student in the vicinity was gawking at the sight of him and Sakura.

However, Sakura was more than conscious of the staring, and shook her head. "Actually, I was thinking that I could come meet you, Ku… I mean, Shuichi?"

She could tell he was trying not to laugh at her, stumbling over his different identities.

"Are you sure? There's no need, really. I'm happy to come to you,"

Sakura smiled. She was trying to ignore the muttering and pointing. Nobody at Sarayashiki could have ever imagined such an attractive stranger at their school gate, and with Sakura Urameshi no less.

"Well, since you came to me this morning, it seems only fair that I should return the favour, you know?"

Kurama chuckled. "Alright, Kura. If you're sure,"

Sakura could see the mischievous glint in his eyes, and she glared at him in warning.

Don't you dare! They'll see!

Let them, my hana.

He leaned forward and planted a kiss on her forehead.

Sakura felt all tongue tied. She could feel her cheeks flaming. "I… uh…"

"I'll see you after school," her lover smirked, and walked away towards Meiou Academy.

Sakura stood in stunned silence for a few seconds before ordering herself to get a grip. She headed inside the gate amidst the sea of staring. Worst of all, it seemed some of her least favourite teachers had witnessed the interaction as well, but she pretended not to notice.

Just as Sakura began walking up the stairs towards her homeroom, she found Mr Iwamoto and Mr Akashi barring the way.

"Ah, Miss Urameshi. It appears you've been quite busy over the break," Akashi snickered, showing his ratty teeth.

Sakura sighed internally, but kept her face blank of emotion and went to walk past them. "I'm afraid I don't know what you mean, sir,"

Neither teacher moved aside for her. Sakura suddenly felt nervous.

Yusuke, can you hear me?

He replied instantly.Yeah, what's up?

Just come to the front hallway, up the first staircase. Right now.

What for? Yusuke sounded bewildered.

Sakura's heart was pounding. Hurry, please!

"Come now, girl," Akashi leered. "You can't honestly think we didn't see that new… companion of yours at the gate? Who is he, your tutor? Or something else?"

Sakura frowned. "With all due respect, Mr Akashi, I don't believe my personal life is any of your business," she said coldly. "Excuse me, I need to get to class,"

Akashi grinned at Iwamoto. "Hmm, looks like we touched a nerve, Mr Iwamoto,"

"Is that so, Mr Akashi?" Iwamoto smirked. He glanced either side to make sure nobody else was around, then reached for the girl.

Sakura took a step backwards, but Iwamoto already had her shoulder in a firm grip. Next thing Sakura knew, he'd pushed her up against the wall and they were both towering over her, just like those three tokage mercenaries in the alley…

Stop! Sakura told herself. Don't think about that!

But it was too late. Akashi and Iwamoto had already noticed her trembling, and they latched onto it mercilessly.

"So, it seems I was right, Urameshi," Iwamoto sneered, lowering his voice. "I always knew you'd end up whoring yourself out," he hissed in her ear. "I just didn't expect you'd try sleeping your way into a decent high school. But that won't help. Not as long as I have anything to say about it,"

Sakura gritted her teeth. She could easily beat these two into oblivion with her bare fists, but that would probably get her expelled.

"Oh, Mr Iwamoto, I'm afraid you've made a shocking error of judgement," Sakura said with exaggerated surprise. "You've mistaken me for someone who cares what you think,"

Iwamoto scowled. "Why you little -"

"HANDS OFF!"

Iwamoto and Akashi whipped around. Yusuke was standing there, flanked by Kuwabara and Keiko. All three of them looked furious.

"Oh look, Akashi. That no good weed actually decided to show up at school today," Iwamoto rolled his eyes.

Yusuke glared. "Get away from my sister. Now."

"Or else what?" Akashi snorted. "What exactly do you three think you can do?"

Keiko waved behind them. "Hi, Mr Takenaka!"

Iwamoto went pale and jumped away from Sakura. Akashi looked around frantically, but there was nobody there.

Iwamoto and Akashi looked both angry and embarrassed that Keiko had tricked them, but the damage was done. Sakura had already run to the rest of the group, and all four teens were laughing at them.

"Get to class, all of you," Iwamoto growled, evidently trying to reassert his authority.

Yusuke rolled his eyes. "Yeah, whatever. Come on, Kura,"

Sakura smiled sweetly at Iwamoto's livid face, and the gang walked down the hall to their homeroom.

Yusuke kept a tight grip on Sakura's arm. "Those assholes… they just don't know when to quit, do they?"

"Kura, what was all that about?" Keiko asked with wide eyes.

"Yeah, are you ok?" Kuwabara looked worried.

Sakura ran a hand through her hair and sighed. "They were just doing their usual routine. Saying that I won't amount to anything. I'm fine, really,"

Keiko gave her best friend a giant hug. "Let's prove them wrong, Kura,"

"You read my mind," Sakura plastered a grin on her face, and they took their seats as the first bell rang.

Kura, I can tell you're still upset. Yusuke wasn't ready to drop the subject. What did those assholes do to you?

Sakura kept her eyes straight ahead, focusing on the lesson.

Nothing worth repeating. Seriously, I'm fine.

But Yusuke knew she wasn't. What he wouldn't give to punch those teachers in the face…

It's ok, Squirt. You got this. Keiko's right, you'll prove them all wrong.

Sakura swallowed hard, holding back tears.

Thanks.

As soon as the final bell rang, Sakura gathered her things and hurried out the front gate towards Meiou. Soon, she'd be back in Kurama's arms, and she'd feel better. But then, she'd have to tell him that he couldn't walk her to school anymore, without revealing what had happened that morning.

It wouldn't be easy, keeping the truth from him, but Sakura wouldn't have a repeat of today's episode. She wouldn't let Kurama be disrespected in such a way…

"Who are you?" a snooty voice enquired loudly.

Sakura skidded to a halt. She'd almost run straight into a group of Meiou girls crowded around the entrance.

"Sorry," Sakura stammered.

All of them were looking at her with distaste. "Sarayashiki," one of them sniffed. "I recognise the uniform. What would some middle schooler be hanging around here for?"

"I, uh… I'm just meeting someone here, that's all," Sakura muttered. Not only were they older than her, they were far prettier, sporting immaculate hairstyles and they carried bags that looked like they cost more than her entire wardrobe.

A tall blonde girl giggled derisively. "Is that right?"

"Leave it, Hajima. She's not important," the apparent ringleader said with a contemptuous look at Sakura. "Minamino's coming. Now's my chance to ask him!"

Oh, crap.

Sakura felt her heart drop to the centre of the earth.

The ringleader strutted her way over to Kurama. "Minamino, do you have a moment?" she simpered.

"Actually, I'm meeting someone in a minute," Kurama said politely.

The girl batted her lashes. "Oh, it will only take a second," she cooed. "We've been in the same class for two years now, Minamino. I've always admired you. And I was just wondering if you'd like to get a drink or something with me sometime,"

Kurama blinked. "I'm flattered, Jirota, but I'm actually seeing someone,"

Jirota looked as though she'd been slapped, but quickly composed herself. "Ooh, I see. The old hard-to-get routine. Very attractive,"

"It's not that, Jirota," Kurama shook his head. "Thank you for the offer, but I really am taken. In fact, she should be here any moment,"

"That can't be true!" Jirota snapped. She looked angry. "Who could you possibly be dating when you could have someone like me?!"

Kurama caught sight of Sakura peeking out from behind the school gate. Her blue uniform stood out in the sea of red and magenta.

He smiled and made a beeline for her. "Kura. I hope you haven't been waiting too long?"

"N-no," Sakura stammered.

If looks could kill, she'd be dead from the daggers being shot in her direction from Kurama's classmates, and not just the girl who'd asked him out. Everyone was staring, and since Kurama was clearly the most handsome boy in school, she was garnering even more attention.

He reached her and immediately cupped her face. "Shall we go, my love?"

"What?! He's with her?! What's wrong with him?!"

Jirota was apparently choking on her own enraged disbelief. Her friends were literally slack-jawed. It was absolutely hilarious, but Sakura didn't feel like laughing.

Kurama heard Jirota's words and very slowly turned to look at her. "Did you say something, Jirota?"

"I… you… I just… this doesn't…" Jirota was digging a deeper hole for herself by the second, but she didn't seem to care. "A middle schooler from a dump like Sarayashiki? You deserve better, Minamino!"

Her friends gasped. She'd gone too far, and everyone knew it.

"Do not speak of my Sakura in such a manner, Jirota. I mean it,"

Kurama's facial expression didn't change, nor did his tone of voice, but that icy chill emanating from him was obvious. Even Sakura recoiled slightly.

"Is that a threat, Minamino?" another one of the girls squeaked.

"Not at all, Hajima," Kurama replied. "I'm merely requesting that my girlfriend is shown the respect she deserves,"

The girls all looked terrified and began stuttering apologies that were lost on Kurama. He turned back to Sakura.

"Come, Kura. There's a nice place up the road I've been meaning to take you to,"

Sakura's heart fluttered. "Sure, Shuichi," she said shyly. "Nice to meet you all," she called to the girls, and slipped her hand into Kurama's. He was smiling faintly, and they headed off.

Sakura waited until they were a safe distance away before speaking. "Who was that girl, Kurama?"

"Hayami Jirota," Kurama sighed. "You might call her the school's resident beauty, but I'm afraid hers is only skin deep,"

"Jealousy doesn't suit her," Sakura giggled. "I thought her head was going to explode when she realised who I was,"

Kurama stopped and pulled Sakura into an embrace. "I'm very sorry she spoke to you like that, my hana. But rest assured it won't happen again,"

"No," Sakura agreed. "Because I won't meet you at the school gate anymore,"

Kurama paused from opening the café door. "What was that?"

"I don't think it's a good idea for us to walk to school together, especially if your classmates are going to kick up a fuss. I don't want to cause trouble for you,"

He surveyed her with a raised eyebrow. "Let's sit down,"

They entered the coffee shop and slid into the booth. Sakura only asked for tea and cake. Between Iwamoto and those girls, she didn't feel much like eating.

Kurama watched Sakura stir her tea several times without taking a sip.

Something's wrong.

"What's troubling you, love? Tell me,"

"It's nothing," Sakura tried to sound casual. "If me showing up at Meiou is going to make girls lose their minds, then I just won't come,"

Kurama reached across the table and took her hand. "I can tell you're upset, Kura. Did something happen today?"

Sakura looked up wearily. She should've known there was no point trying to hide anything from him. She tapped her head, and Kurama nodded in understanding. She didn't want to say it out loud, so showing him was the best option.

Gently, Sakura connected with Kurama's mind and replayed the memory of what Iwamoto and Akashi had said to her that morning.

Once it was over, Kurama closed his eyes and forced himself to calm down. He was beyond infuriated by those hideous teachers. How dare they speak to Sakura in such a way, after all she'd suffered. It was just fortunate that Yusuke and the others had intervened…

My precious flower. You deserve so much better.

Her eyes looked sad, and he wanted to cheer her up. Thankfully, he had just the thing for it.

"I was going to give this to you later on, but I think now is a better time," he smiled and reached into his bag. "Perhaps this can remind you of how very precious you are to me, and so many other people,"

Kurama handed Sakura a beautifully wrapped gift.

"You didn't have to get me anything," Sakura flushed, and started opening the tissue paper.

Her eyes filled with tears as she saw what lay inside. A stunning Kintsugi piece, obviously made by Shiori's hands.

"It's beautiful," she whispered as the tears spilled over. Shiori had repaired a broken plate that was shaped like a sakura blossom, with the matching kanji painted on the edge. "Your mother is such an incredible woman,"

Kurama nodded. "Indeed, but that's not why I had her make this for you, my hana," he said gently. "I want you to have a physical reminder of your beauty and strength. Those scars, the ones you see as unsightly, are precious to me. Everything about you is precious to me. It's you, and that's what I love. Nothing will ever change that,"

Sakura dabbed at her face with the napkin. She was far too choked up to speak.

Do you know how much I love you?

He smiled. I have a rough idea.

She laughed, and he knew his plan had worked.

Sakura wiped her eyes and carefully stowed the plate in her own bag. "Please thank your mother for me. It's just exquisite,"

"Of course," Kurama stroked her hand with his thumb. "And there's something else I wanted to ask you as well. Are you free on Friday night?"

"I am. Why?"

Kurama's eyes sparkled. "I think we're more than overdue for another date, don't you?"

Sakura melted all over again.

A.N. *sigh* Sakura really is a lucky girl, isn't she?

The slower chapters are done. Next time, we're jumping right into the action with both feet. I hope you're ready.

Chapter 4 will be released by July 21st, but as lockdown has been extended again, I'll endeavour to get the next two chapters out as quickly as I can. To be perfectly honest I don't see lockdown ending for at least another month (Seriously, Sydney is completely overrun with Covid cases and it absolutely sucks!).

ANYWAY. What did you think of this chapter? Sakura's decided to try and heal on her own without erasing her memories, but can she do it? And she still doesn't know that Haruki is alive and working with Sensui.

I'm doing my best to stay positive and keep writing. You can help me out by following, favouriting and leaving a review. Whenever I see a notification in my inbox, it just makes my day to know people are reading and enjoying my work.
