A.N. The boys have entered the cave only to be confronted by someone they'd believed to be long dead. Let's not waste any more time and dive right into this confrontation!

A HUGE thanks to my dear friend NightWolfRUNNER who helped me so much with this immensely complicated chapter. Couldn't have done it without her.

LadyAmazon: Thank you. It's so hard without my fur baby. He was my pride and joy. I miss him horribly.

Sorry to say, I think your hands might flail in this chapter too.

Wolfs child/Starrat: :D

Ghost of Magic: I'm alright, just trying to stop pushing myself so hard. I'm glad you thought the chapter was amazing, I only hope this one is a decent follow up. I'm immensely worried about Sakura as well!

hw0134160: A solid ice bath won't help Haruki. As for action...it's coming, but this chapter is the first chance the boys will get to confront Haruki and I'm sure there's going to be some very enjoyable moments in that regard for you. As for heroic Kurama...keep it in mind for now.

As for my brother, you're too kind. I'm honestly so furious at him. He's turning into everything he swore he'd never be, and it's all because of our abusive father's influence...now he's talking to our mother again and acting like nothing happened. No apology. In fact, he doubled down on his horrible behaviour. It's unbelievable.

It's always terrible to lose a pet. I miss my boy so much. I keep thinking I'm going to see him curled up at the end of my bed or jumping up with a tennis ball in his mouth...but I actually got a really cute memorial tattoo on my wrist for him and the other two dogs I've owned, and that's made me feel better. They're always with me now.

I took my time with this chapter for my own mental wellbeing, and I will continue to do so as long as necessary. I don't want to let anyone down by pushing myself and dropping in quality. Hope this chapter satisfies. See you in the next one!

Hina714: Thank you. Truly. I honestly don't know how I managed to write that last chapter, or this one. But my heart is mending and thinks are slowly changing.

Athena1019: Hi there. Thankyou so much. That means more than I can say. Honestly, your comment made me cry in the best way. I'm healing, slowly but surely. And I certainly hope you'll stick around.

Guest 2.0: I put so many hours into writing that interaction. I can't even tell you. Yes, Kurama's rage will be apocalyptic, and you'll get a sense of it here.

My brother actually doubled down on the horrible things he said to our mother, but now all of a sudden he's acting like the good son again with zero remorse or apology, as if nothing happened. I have no words aside from rage. My psychologist says I'm doing incredibly well, all things considered, so I'm grateful for that.

Nyac Silver Fang: Thankyou. Hope you enjoy this one.

Ukitakeitalialover041757: I can't say much, but I will say that Haruki is about to learn exactly what happens when you steal from the Legendary Bandit and then taunt him about it.

Neoacoya1: You know, I seriously debated whether it was even worth replying to your comment but I'm going to do so. Even though you commented on Chapter 1 of Book 1, I will reply here because I'm hoping this can be a teaching moment for you and potentially other people.

It's clear that you don't like my story. You are entitled to that opinion. You are not, however, entitled to be disparaging and rude.

I too have come across many stories on this and other fan fiction sites that I didn't care for. And you know what? I just moved onto the next one. I didn't then write nasty remarks on the book insulting the author and telling other people not to read it.

By your own admission, you didn't even read half the first book of a series before deciding that the changes were 'surface level' and "ultimately changes nothing". I would argue that such a thing is 'fantastically lazy', as opposed to my writing (as you so arrogantly described, despite having no published works yourself). I seriously doubt you read anything properly, and had you continued you would have seen that Sakura's story is interwoven with the original canon. This was a deliberate choice, and one that many readers have enjoyed.

Yes, Yusuke is a protective big brother. Contrary to your comment, this was not intended to be a 'trope' but a realistic plot point that fits his character. Yusuke is extremely protective of those he cares about, and I figured he'd be the same if he had a twin sister.

I'm all for constructive criticism and have gratefully accepted it in the past. But this was not constructive criticism. At no point did you give any suggestions or thoughts on how the story might be improved to your impossibly high standards. You just insulted my writing, and me. That is not ok. My writing is not perfect, but it's not 'fantastically lazy'.

Again, you are free to dislike what I've done. But I'd suggest remembering that there is a human being on the other side of the screen, and you don't know what effect your words might have on them. I hope you don't behave this way to anyone else.

*deep breath*

Now that I'm finished with THAT...

At the end of the chapter, there's a VERY fun and important question I'd love you all to answer. Make sure you do!

Chapter 23

"You mean Ghost hasn't even started softening her up yet?!" The man with the gun impatiently pawed the ground with his foot. "How much longer til we can talk to the girl? I want a piece of that!"

Another voice spoke from the shadows. "Patience, Kazuya. Such a delicate flower must be handled with care. We have time,"

"I don't understand why we have to wait for Ghost," The gun-wielder retorted. "I say we head in there now and start making the bitch know what pain really feels like!" He licked his lips. "Then she'll do whatever we want!"

"No!" A far more gentle figure insisted. "I know you don't really want that, Shinobu. She's only a child. And with a name like Sakura, you wouldn't want to harm her unnecessarily,"

"Of course we do!" The gun-wielding maniac burst out. "She's human, ain't she? They all gotta die!"

The orator stepped from the shadows. "Not until she's served her purpose in our plan. But I agree with Kazuya," he smiled. "If it comes down to force, so be it. The stakes are too high to fail now,"

The one sitting in the corner looked doubtful. "The Spirit Detective's twin is an important piece in this game. You think Ghost is actually capable of pulling this off?"

The more cynical man shook his head. "I'm not worried. Once the boy has his fun, Minoru can finish the job. She'll come around. And even if she doesn't, it don't matter any. Not like she has a choice but to do what we say,"

Minoru gave a laugh laced with manipulation. "Give it time," he smirked. "The boy has waited so long for his answers. He deserves to have his chance first,"

"Mr Sensui?"

The former detective blinked and glanced over at Itsuki. "Is there a problem?"

"I could ask you the same thing," Itsuki smiled. "You looked so distant. Has there been an unexpected development?"

Sensui smiled back and shook his head. "No, Itsuki. Everything is going according to plan. I'd even say it's exceeding my expectations,"

Itsuki looked pleased. "Very good. And what about Ghost?"

"He's taking care of surveillance for now," Sensui replied with a laugh. "I'm expecting the Spirit Detective to enter the cave at any moment,"

"You won't be laughing when they get here!" Kuwabara spat from the corner. "Urameshi and the others will-"

Gourmet cuffed the back of his head, hard. "Yeah, not going to happen,"

"And what about the girl?" Itsuki continued as though nothing had happened. "Has Ghost made any progress with her?"

"We'll see if the boy is truly capable," Sensui smirked. "But I'm not concerned. Either way, we'll get exactly what we want,"

Kuwabara clenched his teeth. He'd had enough of sitting in silence. "What the hell are you saying, Sensui?" he demanded. "What's that maniac doing to Kura?"

"Nothing that you need to worry about," Sensui's voice was cold, final. "I already told you, he's not planning to kill her,"

"Then why is she here?! I'm the one with the sword. If you're trying to use her as bait for Urameshi-!"

Gourmet burst out laughing before Sensui could reply. "It's more than that, idiot. She's multi-purpose,"

"I don't know what that means," Kuwabara hissed. "But whatever you try, she'll never help you!"

"You can believe that if you wish, Kuwabara," Sensui took a seat on the couch. "But you'll see. Whether she wants to or not, Miss Urameshi is going to be most helpful once the tunnel opens,"

He glanced at the portal above Itsuki's head. "And that's not all we have planned for her,"

Seething and sick with worry, Kuwabara glanced towards the hidden entrance to the den where Sakura was supposedly being kept. He hadn't seen or heard anything much since his arrival. Scarface had yet to reappear, and that terrified him more than anything.

Kura, just hang on! Urameshi's coming. They all are.

Of course, there was no reply.

Yusuke gritted his teeth. "You!"

"Me," Haruki smiled calmly. "Welcome to Demon's Door Cave, gentlemen. You certainly took your time in getting here,"

With a smug laugh, Haruki's gaze swept over the four, coming to rest on Kurama last of all.

"Then again, you know all about being too slow. Isn't that right, Spirit Fox?"

Kurama gave Haruki a deadly stare, but said nothing.

Haruki smirked at him before looking around at the others. All of them were glaring with pure hate, utterly trapped by his creatures.

Hiei growled. "What is this mockery?!"

There was a clatter as one creature knocked his sword to the ground.

"Just one of my new talents," Haruki laughed. "What do you think of my Shadow Puppets, boys? You four are the first to experience them, after all,"

Yusuke hissed in fury from where he was constrained.

He's really alive.

Part of Yusuke still hadn't wanted to believe it was true, but any trace of doubt or denial vanished as he stared up at their old enemy. Sakyo's bodyguard, the lone survivor of Master Shinsuke's class, was there in the flesh. And he was even more intimidating than Yusuke remembered.

It was obvious that Sensui had been training him. Haruki's muscles had doubled in size, and even though his energy seemed to be suppressed, Yusuke could tell it had increased greatly since the end of the tournament.

But what really made Yusuke shudder was the look in Haruki's eyes. That crazed, obsessive stare full of malice, but a strange sense of control. And worst of all, the sight of scratches on his face, no doubt left by Sakura when he took her.

"Where is she, Scarface?" Yusuke snarled. "Where's Kura?!"

Haruki snapped his fingers, and the Shadow Puppets holding Yusuke forced him to his knees.

"Manners cost nothing, Yusuke. I'd much prefer if you called me by my proper name,"

"Shove it up your ass!" Yusuke snapped. "Where's my sister? What have you done with her?!"

"You're asking me?" Haruki sneered. "Who's supposed to be the detective here?"

Yusuke made a furious move towards the demon, only for the Shadow Puppets to slam his head into the ground.

Mitari gasped. "No, stop!"

Haruki ignored him and took a few steps to stand over Yusuke. "It's astounding. It really is. How you can say she's your sister with a straight face,"

"I don't care what you think!" Yusuke shot back. "I just want to know if she's ok. And Kuwabara!"

Haruki shook his head mockingly. "Don't worry about that orange-haired idiot. He's in good hands. As for Sakura…"

His smile widened. "Well, I suppose it depends on what your definition of ok is,"

"And what's that supposed to mean, you bastard?" Yusuke asked from the ground, not sure he truly wanted to know the answer. "You better not hurt my sister!"

"Your sister…" Haruki repeated the word with utter contempt. "Your twin, as you claim. The opposite side of the coin, right?"

From the corner of his eye, Yusuke could see the enemy approaching slowly.

"What right do you have to call her your sister, Spirit Detective?" Haruki continued. "Where were you when she needed your help? Off playing hero, as usual. Exactly as Mr Sensui predicted,"

A snarl ripped through Yusuke's teeth. "I was trying to-"

"…trying to keep her safe," Haruki finished the sentence with a sneer. "Yes, we've heard that excuse before. And like always, you failed,"

Yusuke struggled in an attempt to throw the Shadow Puppets off him. "Shut up!" he hissed. "How are you even here, you freak? You're meant to be six feet under!"

"That's true," Haruki agreed. "But it seemed fate had other plans for me, and so did Mr Sakyo," His crazed smile was terrifying to see. "I won't bore you with the details. Frankly, it no longer matters. Now that Sensui has everything he needs, we can truly begin,"

Yusuke managed to raise his head up slightly. He could see Mitari and Hiei being held back in his peripheral vision, but not Kurama. The fox demon hadn't made a sound for whatever reason. Yusuke couldn't figure out why. But there was no time to wonder. Not when Haruki was standing right there in triumph.

"I thought Kuwabara was the one Sensui wanted," Yusuke said angrily. "What does my sister have to do with anything?"

Haruki tilted his head to the side. "Come now, Detective. Isn't it about time you dropped this nonsense about her being your sister when we both know it's not true?"

A bewildered silence followed those bizarre words.

"Not true?" Yusuke repeated. "What the hell are you talking about?"

"Keep playing dumb if you must, Detective," Haruki glared. "But you don't fool me. You all know exactly what I mean,"

Yusuke ground his teeth together. "You're not making any sense. Just tell me what you want with Kura!"

Haruki considered the question with an insufferably smug look. "Let's just say Sensui needs her assistance with something once the barrier is cut. As for me…"

Yusuke shuddered slightly. That crazed look of euphoria was back.

"Well, Sakura has something I've been searching for," Haruki said after a moment. "Something only she can give me,"

"I don't know what you've been smoking, but you're not going to get anything out of Kura!" Yusuke shouted. "You might as well give up now!"

"That is not going to happen!" Haruki retorted. "I'm just getting started with her. I'll do whatever it takes to get my answers!"

From the corner, Hiei's eyes narrowed. "Answers?" he said darkly. "What could the girl possibly tell you about us that you don't already know?"

More silence. Haruki started howling with laughter.

"Getting information on all of you?" he snickered. "Is that what you think this is about? No, Hiei. This is about divine justice. And it's about me getting the truth I was denied!"

"Haruki, what's going on?!" Mitari called. "Why did you take Miss Kura? Mr Sensui never said he wanted her!"

"Of course he didn't, traitor," Haruki whirled around to glare at the boy. "Why would he tell his most secret plans to the weakest link?"

Mitari gasped. "You mean…from the very start…?"

"He was counting on you to betray him from the moment you met," Haruki nodded while advancing on his former teammate. "Sensui told you only what you needed to know. As for me, I knew everything. I've proven my loyalty to Mr Sensui enough times to be trusted. That's why he gave me the task of bringing her here in the first place,"

Mitari swallowed hard. "But why?" he asked again. "Kuwabara has the power Mr Sensui wanted. Miss Kura can't do anything like that!"

"She has plenty of other uses, traitor," Haruki hurled the words into Mitari's face. "But you're too weak and pathetic to understand!"

Mitari only looked stricken for a moment, but then his face went hard. "Mr Haruki, whatever you're planning, you can't do it," he said in the firmest voice he could muster. "This isn't right. You can't hurt Miss Kura -"

"Hurt her?" Haruki snorted derisively. "You don't need to worry about that. I've only done what's necessary,"

Yusuke tried to turn his head towards the demon. "She saved your life, you bastard! Remember?"

The Shadow Puppets dragged him up by the hair. Haruki bent down to Yusuke's eye level.

"Oh, I remember everything, Spirit Detective. That was the very moment I knew the truth about her. The moment I realised she was not human,"

From behind Yusuke, Kurama's eyes had narrowed to the point they were almost slits. But he still remained silent.

"...Not human?" Yusuke was sure he'd misheard. "Are you out of your mind?! She's as human as you can possibly get!"

"That's exactly what I expected you to say," Haruki rolled his eyes. "Along with all that sibling nonsense. You really are a fool,"

He waved his hand, and the Shadow Puppets made their move. Haruki watched with amusement while his creations pressed Yusuke's face into the rocky ground. The boy's companions made sounds of concern and protest, but they were in no position to do anything.

"As you can see, I'm not the same apparition you remember, Detective," Haruki bragged. "Thanks to Mr Sensui, I no longer have to suppress my true potential. These Shadow Puppets are but a taste of what I can do. And with my new abilities, I'll uncover every secret that your so-called twin sister is hiding,"

He threw back his head and laughed maniacally. The sound went through Yusuke like physical pain.

This enemy wasn't just evil. Yusuke honestly didn't know how to describe what he was witnessing. Psychotic and unhinged didn't seem adequate. But one thing was certain. He wasn't going to just lie down and take it. No way.

"You bastard!" Yusuke growled with some difficulty. "I won't…let you…touch her!"

At last, Haruki's laughter died down. "What was that?" he sneered. "This isn't a case of what you will and won't allow, Detective. I am going to get my answers, whether she gives them up willingly or not. I've waited too long,"

Yusuke's eyes were searing with hate. "I don't know what you mean by getting your answers, but you sure as hell won't be laughing once I finish kicking your ass,"

More crazed laughter. "Is that right?"

"You better believe it!" Yusuke shouted. "You'll be sorry you ever came near my sister!"

"Again with the sibling talk," Haruki sighed. "When are you going to drop it? She's not your sister, Detective. You know it. I know it,"

Yusuke's face went red with anger. "Shut up, you crazy-!"

BANG!

The shadow puppets smacked his forehead into the stone floor again.

"Ghost, stop it!" Mitari cried.

"How sad!" Haruki taunted. He seemed to have forgotten about everyone else except Yusuke. "You defeated Toguro, but even with all your strength, you're completely helpless against me. I wonder, how do you plan to defeat Sensui when you can't even fight off my Shadow-"

"That is enough,"

Everyone froze at the sound. That husky voice, full of quiet menace, could only belong to one person.

"So, the fox has found his tongue at last," Haruki smirked. "And here I was beginning to think you-"

"I said ENOUGH!"

Yusuke felt the grip on his hair slacken. He just managed to turn towards Kurama as the fox demon raised his head. Yusuke couldn't quite make out Kurama's face, but he heard his friend's reactions. Mitari's gasp. Hiei's soft laughter.

Haruki took a step back. Whatever he could see that Yusuke couldn't, it made his gloating smile fall off. Good.

"I will not tolerate your arrogance any longer," Kurama hissed. "Nor will I stand for those lies. Your words do not fool me,"

Haruki's face morphed from mild shock to fury. "Arrogance?" he repeated in an enraged whisper. "You dare speak to me of arrogance, Spirit Fox?!"

"You would be wise to stop talking," Kurama warned. His inexpressible anger and vengeance filled the air.

Haruki scowled. "I don't take orders from you, Spirit Fox,"

"Nor I from you," Kurama sounded even more murderous than he had while ending Akumu at the Dark Tournament. "Not from a coward such as yourself, who understands nothing,"

Coward. It was a crushing word. Haruki felt pinned down by it.

"Where is she, Haruki?" Kurama's soft demand was more terrifying than if he'd shouted. "Where is my Sakura?"

"Even if I told you, it wouldn't do you any good," Haruki shrugged in an attempt to appear unconcerned. "You'll never get to her. It's impossible,"

Kurama's eyes narrowed further. "Your repeated lies will make no difference to your fate. You were marked for death from the moment you dared to touch her,"

Haruki froze again. Something was wrong. He wasn't prepared for the sight of silver threading through his enemy's hair, nor had he expected to see those bright emerald orbs turning gold.

No…this can't be happening! It's too soon!

He was looking at a worst-case scenario, unless he established control again, and fast.

There was only one thing for it. Haruki drew himself up to his full height and glared at Kurama with as much contempt as ever. These four were no match for him in this form, and no threat to Sensui even if they did make it through the cave. They were insignificant.

Focus. Mr Sensui planned for everything. You have the power here. You have her.

"Do you really want to go there, Spirit Fox?" Haruki whispered while his arrogant smile appeared once more. "You're hardly one to talk about lies, after all. I should know,"

There was a very tense silence while Haruki took a step closer to Kurama. What he was about to say would destroy the Spirit Fox, and the Spirit Detective. He was almost salivating with the thought.

"Tell me," Haruki began slowly. "Does erasing her memories count as lying?"

Kurama's heart skipped a beat, but he didn't move.

"Oh yes, I know what you did after the hospital," Haruki smirked. "I know you erased those memories of me. And most importantly, I know that the only one who's been left in the dark about it…is her,"

No response.

"I know what you're thinking," Haruki laughed. "How can he possibly know all that? How did he discover my secret?" He shook his head in amusement. "Shall I reveal everything, Spirit Fox? The exact depths of your failures, your deceit? The true extent of your incompetence?"

Those gold eyes flickered for just a moment. Haruki's smile widened.

"I admit, I only found out very recently. Last night, to be precise," Haruki went on. "See, the moment Mr Sensui told this fool to make his move against Kuwabara…" he indicated Mitari. "I had my own role to fulfil. Surveillance and reconnaissance,"

Mitari nearly choked. "What?! You mean you were watching the whole time? But I never-!"

"Of course you didn't know, traitor," Haruki spat. "You weren't supposed to. But either way, yes. I was there. And I saw everything,"

Yusuke felt his blood turn to ice. "No…"

"That's right, Detective. Mr Sensui told me that someone from your group was bound to show up when they realised Kuwabara was in danger," Haruki paused, and sighed happily. "You can only imagine how thrilled I was when it turned out to be Sakura. Having her so close…never realising I was there thanks to my Shadow Form,"

To Haruki's delight, a growing sense of horror was hanging over his audience.

"You bastard!" Yusuke yelled. Haruki waved his hand and the Shadow Puppets yanked Yusuke's head back in warning.

"Don't interrupt, Detective. I haven't told you the best part yet," Haruki giggled. "About how I was able to follow them back to your home, where I heard some very interesting conversations,"

Kurama growled quietly.

"You know what I mean, don't you?" Haruki's eyes glittered with malice. "I heard you confess to Keiko. I heard your clear lack of remorse, your insistence that it was the best course of action. I heard every word. And you had no idea,"

There was another growl from Kurama. Haruki closed his eyes and relished the sound.

"But that's not all," he continued. "The greatest thing I saw that night…was her tears of guilt. Over me,"

Haruki opened his eyes. He wanted to see every moment of their reaction.

"Yes, Spirit Fox. I was there. And you're not even trying to deny what I heard, are you? Because it's all true. She was thinking about me the entire time,"

Kurama didn't say anything. He couldn't.

"You're full of it!" Yusuke spluttered. "She never said anything about that to me!"

Very slowly, Haruki looked back at Yusuke with scorn. "Why would she tell you anything, Detective? You've made it clear that her feelings are secondary to yours time and time again,"

Yusuke fell silent. He looked as though he'd been slapped. Satisfied, Haruki turned back to his true target.

"I was still there when you left the room," Haruki enunciated every word. "Sakura does look so… enchanting when she sleeps. If Sensui had allowed it, I would've brought her back with me right then and there,"

Yusuke made a sound of outrage. "What kind of sick freak are you?!"

Haruki ignored him and got within an inch of Kurama's face. "How does that make you feel, Spirit Fox? The so-called Legendary Bandit didn't realise his precious flower had…company. Could it be that you've lost your touch?"

Unbearable rage was spreading throughout Kurama's body. His hands started to tremble. This deranged creature had actually been in Sakura's bedroom the night before? How had he not realised?

It doesn't matter at this point. Kurama told himself firmly. He's trying to distract you. Rescuing Kura is the only thing that matters right now. Anything else can be attended to when she's safe.

Haruki wasn't done. Not by a long shot. He could feel Kurama's anger swelling. It was intoxicating.

"You told her she didn't need to feel responsible," Haruki said maliciously. "You said she couldn't have done anything for me. But you fail to understand that there is so much she can do for me. So much she already has done. Sakura might not know it yet, but she will after tonight. And more importantly, she'll want to,"

Kurama hissed. "I should have killed you when I had the chance. I will not make the same mistake again,"

Haruki's lip curled with contempt. "Since we're on the topic of your mistakes, Spirit Fox, how do you suppose Sakura will take it? Learning that you tampered with her memories, and everyone knew except her?"

Kurama's eyes flashed, but he wasn't alone. Across the room, Hiei's expression was quickly turning bloodthirsty.

"You say you love her," Haruki spat. "You call her your precious flower. But really, it's all about control with you. Isn't that more accurate? You enjoy having her wrapped around your little finger with your sweet words, pretty flowers and empty promises. But that doesn't change your failures. You didn't see the fear in her eyes when she saw me. And when she called for you, what happened? You were too slow. Pathetic. It's no coincidence that she belongs to me now,"

"Kura doesn't belong to you, asshole!" Yusuke yelled. "You try telling her that crap, see how long you survive!"

Haruki snapped his fingers. The Shadow Puppets started reasserting their control over the boys, forcing them back further. One pressed its hand to Yusuke's neck.

"She won't have a choice, Spirit Detective!" Haruki snapped. "You'll see, if you survive that long,"

"No more!" a furious voice ordered.

Haruki instinctively flinched at the sound. Seemed like Kurama had finally reached his limit.

"You've done more than enough talking, Haruki," Kurama whispered dangerously. "Now it's my turn,"

Haruki opened his mouth to retort, but his words died upon feeling the ferocious aura emanating from the Spirit Fox.

"Any errors I made pale in comparison to yours," Kurama hissed. His glare was colder and more lethal than ever. "And for what you have done, you will pay dearly. There is nowhere for you to hide from me,"

Haruki couldn't stop himself. He took a small step backwards while forcing a sneer of indifference on his face.

"That's quite a threat, Spirit Fox. But that would involve you finding me first,"

"Oh, I will," Kurama promised in an icy tone. "But know this: if you've harmed her…if you've so much as bruised my flower…the only thing you will wish for is a faster demise,"

The threat earned a scoff from Haruki. "I'm not the one who's harmed her, Spirit Fox. You are! Nothing I do could come close to-"

"Kurama," Hiei finally broke his silence. "You might enjoy listening to this insufferable blather, but I don't,"

Haruki's smile vanished. "And what exactly are you going to do about it, Hiei?" he snapped. "This is my territory, where my Shadow Puppets thrive. You're out of your depth here. And I-"

The world as they knew it exploded into an inferno.

At last, the tiny hands that restrained the boys fell away. Yusuke heard an odd shrieking from the Shadow Puppets as they scrambled for cover, only to be disintegrated by the unforgiving fire.

When the blue flames died down, Yusuke jumped to his feet and joined the rest of his team in the centre of the tunnel.

"Nice one, Hiei!"

The fire demon was still smouldering. "This fool has been in the darkness too long," he growled, having already retrieved his sword. "Clearly in love with the sound of his own voice. I have no time for it,"

Yusuke glanced around, looking for Haruki. "Where did he go?"

Slow, sarcastic clapping echoed around them.

"Congratulations, Hiei. You figured it out," Haruki emerged from the shadows. "I can see why her Spirit Flame is so very impressive under your tutelage," his face cracked into an evil grin. "That is…I would if she was able to use her powers right now,"

Whatever Haruki meant by that, it sounded ominous. The boys glared at him. The only emotion they all felt was homicidal enragement.

Yusuke hurled himself forward, fist raised. "You bastard!"

"Yusuke, don't!" Kurama called. But the Spirit Detective wasn't listening. He aimed his powerful right hook directly at Haruki's triumphant face.

Nothing. His fist passed straight through the demon's visage. Yusuke's eyes widened.

It's not him?!

The shock caused Yusuke to lose his balance and fall. Furious, he leapt back on his feet and glared up at the demon.

"What the hell is this, Haruki?!"

Haruki chuckled. "One of my many talents, Detective,"

Kurama's scowl deepened. "Soul Projection combined with your new Binary technique. Sending your consciousness out into the void while your true body remains in place,"

Haruki looked momentarily stunned but that quickly changed to annoyance. "There's only one way you could know about that," he glared at Mitari. "But it doesn't matter. That traitor can't tell you anything of real importance,"

"So, you don't even have the balls to face me for real!" Yusuke said in disgust. "What's wrong? Too scared you'll end up like Toguro?"

"Far from it, Spirit Detective. I'm not here to fight you. We'll have to see if you earn that privilege,"

Yusuke clenched his fists. "Just name it, asshole!"

Haruki shrugged. "I don't need to. You'll understand when the time is right,"

"Your cryptic words are beyond tiresome," Hiei snarled. "Either talk straight or get out of our way!"

Haruki barely glanced at the fire demon. "I wouldn't expect a demon fighting for the wrong side to understand," he sniffed. "But I'll admit you have a slight point. I should be getting back where I'm actually needed,"

"Wait!" Yusuke called with rising panic. "Just let me talk to Kura for one second. Prove that she's ok!"

A slow, taunting shake of the head. "I'm afraid I simply can't do that. She's not really up for much conversation right now,"

"You should just let her go, freak!" Yusuke took a step closer to Haruki even as Kurama seized his arm in warning. "She's not going to help you or your boss!"

Haruki sighed. "Haven't you been listening, Detective? Sakura will do anything given the proper motivation. And even if she doesn't…" he trailed off. "Well, we have ways of bringing her to enlightenment,"

Yusuke heard Mitari gasp in horror.

Haruki laughed again. "As enjoyable as this has been, I must be off. I've kept my little porcelain doll waiting for far too long,"

Yusuke felt Kurama and Hiei tense up behind him. Nausea bubbled up in his stomach.

Porcelain doll? Why do I get the feeling he's not just saying that to be cute?

Haruki seemed to be fading, melting away into the shadows. "I'll be seeing you soon, gentlemen. But then again…perhaps I won't,"

"Believe what you wish, but that arrogance will be your undoing!" Kurama hissed.

"Speaking of which," Haruki had one last card to play. "It doesn't matter if you erased those memories of the hospital, Spirit Fox. I can easily fill in the blanks for her anytime I like. Goodbye!"

Kurama bared his teeth as Hiei shot another blue flame at the retreating demon. Haruki's roar of maniacal laughter rang out, but the boys heard the anger within.

"Get back here you son of a bitch!" Yusuke roared. Hiei's fire illuminated the cave to reveal emptiness. Haruki had vanished without a trace.

Yusuke felt his legs buckle and he slid to the ground. "Sakura…" he breathed in a desperate whisper. "No…no…"

It was worse than he could have ever imagined. Haruki was utterly deranged. Completely twisted beyond any semblance of sanity or reason. And his little sister was in the demon's unhinged grasp…

Yusuke clawed at the ground, trying to find something tangible to hold onto, but there was nothing. All he could do was close his hand into a tight fist. A fist that made a hole in the stone floor.

"DAMN IT!"

The anger and panic finally burst out of Yusuke in a primal scream. Why couldn't this be some horrible dream he was going to wake up from?

A hand went on his shoulder. "On your feet, Detective,"

Hiei's abrupt order seemed to penetrate the horror that barricaded any rational thought in Yusuke's mind. He forced himself upright and turned to the others.

"He's dead," Yusuke's voice quivered as much as his body. "I don't care what that nutcase says. I'll find him and rip his head off,"

"Come," Hiei said roughly. "We have to move,"

Yusuke swallowed and nodded, then glanced at the fox demon's motionless form.

"Kurama?" Yusuke called hesitantly.

No response. Kurama simply walked to the spot where they'd seen Haruki make his escape. His gold-tinted eyes examined the rocky floor closely, but there was no clue to where Haruki might be now…or what he planned to do with Sakura.

Kurama's own fists clenched. He will not get away with this.

The silent declaration was not made for himself, or his companions, but for his precious Sakura.

"Kurama?" Yusuke called again, this time a little louder.

Kurama straightened up and felt a dangerous calm sweep over him. "Mitari," he said without turning around. "Do you have any idea where Haruki might be hiding?"

Yusuke was slightly taken aback at how evenly Kurama spoke, but didn't dare comment. There was no time.

"Y-yes," The younger boy had turned white as chalk. "He's got a hidden den where Itsuki is working on the tunnel. I've never been inside it, but I'm positive he'll be holding Miss Kura there,"

Yusuke caught his arm. "You look like you've seen a ghost," he said without a trace of irony. "What's going on?"

Mitari couldn't quite meet Yusuke's eyes. "I can't be sure, but I think Miss Kura might be in more danger than Mr Kuwabara,"

In truth, he had a horrible suspicion that there was a double meaning behind something Haruki had said.

"We have ways of bringing her to enlightenment!"

Could it be that Sensui might be planning to…? No. Surely not.

Mitari shook his head to clear it. It might just be his own paranoia talking. "We have to hurry," he said in a low voice. "I've never seen that side of Haruki before. Whatever he's planning, it's not good,"

Yusuke set his mouth into a straight, determined line. "Then let's move!"

He could ask more questions while they walked. Every second they wasted by standing around talking was another second his sister spent in captivity. Not to mention Kuwabara, and the ever-expanding tunnel.

As they set off again into the darkness, Kurama took a moment to exchange a glance with Hiei.

Using your flames against those Shadow Puppets was an inspired move, Hiei. Thank you.

Hiei kept his eyes ahead. If I hadn't, that fool would have talked us to death.

Another moment of silence passed before Hiei finally said what was on his mind.

Kurama, I hope you're ready for whatever is waiting down there.

Kurama didn't give any outward indication that he heard, but Hiei knew. The fox demon would show no mercy when he faced Haruki.

Be strong, my hana. I'm coming for you.

Come on…come on!

Sakura twisted her left wrist, hoping that this would be the moment she was able to slip it loose from the shackle. But the cold metal didn't budge. Just like the other restraints holding her in place.

It was hopeless. Trying to free herself only resulted in painful cuts on her arms and legs.

Sakura gave up and let her spinning head rest against the back of the chair. Haruki hadn't been joking when he said there was no escape.

Where did he go?

She couldn't see anything from this chair, or hear anything. But Haruki couldn't have gone far. The room was completely closed in.

He said he was going to talk to Yusuke and the others when they arrived. He must be using some kind of psychic ability to do that without leaving here.

The thought gave her some sense of relief, knowing that Haruki was less likely to harm them physically. How could he, without his body?

Yusuke…Kurama…if only I could use my telepathy and tell them what's going on…!

But even if she could, what then? It's not like they could get here any faster. From what Koenma had shown them, this cave was gigantic. Who could even say where she was right now? And she still had no idea what Haruki was planning to do when he returned.

A sob lurked at the back of her throat, and Sakura swallowed it. If she started crying, she knew the tears wouldn't stop.

You're stronger than that, Sakura. They'll come. You know they will. You just have to hold on until then. No matter what, you can't give up!

She had to keep it together as long as possible. Besides, Haruki had warned her not to make a sound and she wasn't about to test his patience.

"Well done, honey,"

Every hair on the back of Sakura's neck stood up at attention.

He's back!

In confirmation, a hand came down from behind, gently tracing her exposed shoulder.

"You stayed quiet, just like I asked. Such a good girl,"

Sakura froze under his touch. Haruki chuckled to himself and slowly stepped around the chair so she could see him. He couldn't help smiling at the sight.

So beautiful.

His little porcelain doll was waiting for him, exactly as he'd left her. Strapped in place, wearing that beautiful pale blue dress which contrasted perfectly with her glossy black hair…

"For what you have done, you will pay dearly. There is nowhere for you to hide from me!"

Haruki suppressed a growl. Even now, the Spirit Fox seemed to be breathing down his neck, calling him a coward over and over…

Focus. You're so close to getting your answers. You have to get a grip.

Sakura was looking at him, waiting to see what he would do. She was trembling, and it brought him back to his senses.

Haruki drew closer and stroked his thumb over her bruised cheek. He shivered too, with delight. The sensation of touching her face in his physical body was something he doubted he'd ever tire of.

His anger, so raw and all-consuming while confronting the boys, was ebbing away as he stared at his prize.

Sakura Urameshi was here with him. He could do anything, ask anything of her after waiting and planning for so long.

His face cracked into a grin. So, the Spirit Fox thought him a coward? The Spirit Detective vowed revenge? They were free to think what they wished. It meant nothing as long as Sakura was in his control.

Words. Just words. They can't do anything to you, and they know it. Especially not when you have her.

Those fools would never make it through the cave. And even if they did…no. They wouldn't. It was impossible with Sensui's traps.

Focus. You have all the time you need to learn the truth now. Remember what Sensui said. Be gentle.

"Let me take this off," Haruki reached for the fabric tied around her pretty mouth. "Remember, no screaming,"

She nodded once. Haruki smiled again and pulled the scarf away.

"Good girl. See how much easier things are when you behave?"

Sakura didn't answer. Haruki took her face in his hand and was pleased when she didn't try to pull away.

Good. She's learning.

In reality, Sakura was scrutinising her captor. He might be exuding an air of confidence, but something felt off about it. Something in his eyes…he looked almost rattled. And there was only one explanation as to why.

The boys are here.

Her heart leapt at the thought. But within a second Haruki was getting much too close for comfort.

"Anyway, now that my little errand is complete we'll be able to get started soon," Haruki murmured. "I just have to inform Mr Sensui of this latest development, and then I'll be back,"

Sakura couldn't move. His lips were almost touching her neck…

Haruki laughed quietly. At last, he pulled back and brushed a strand of hair away from her face. "You just keep being a good girl and everything will be fine. Ok honey? I won't be long,"

Sakura nearly choked. He was going to leave her strapped down to this chair and unable to use her spirit energy? She'd be helpless to defend herself if that monster returned!

"N-no, please don't go," her voice trembled despite the effort to speak calmly. "W-what if he comes back?"

"Shhhh," Haruki stroked his hand down the side of her face. "He won't. Nobody is going to hurt you, I promise,"

She just stared at him, her bloodshot eyes wide with the fear she was trying so hard to conceal.

"Don't be scared, honey," Haruki whispered. "You're safe with me. I'm not going to let anything happen to my little porcelain doll,"

She shivered a little. "Ok…"

"Just relax, honey. I'll be back in a minute," Haruki stood up and headed for the exit. "And since those fools won't come anytime soon…or even at all…we'll have all the time in the world to talk,"

Sakura hesitated. He'd just indirectly mentioned the boys. That was her way in.

"Is…is my brother alright? And Kurama?"

Haruki stopped dead in his tracks. Sakura noticed the way his whole body seemed to tense up as soon as she spoke her lover's name.

"Please, Haruki," Sakura kept her tone gentle. She couldn't risk aggravating him too much. "Just say yes or no. That's all I'm asking for,"

It was a dangerous question, but she had to know. Even if Haruki wouldn't answer directly, she might be able to gauge the situation based on his reaction.

"They're alive, if that's what you mean," he said shortly. "But that doesn't matter. They're not going to come here,"

Sakura couldn't prevent a tiny smile. A warm sense of hope started spreading through her chest and she felt brave enough to whisper a response.

"Yes they will,"

Haruki turned his head back to glare at her. "They won't. It's impossible,"

"They'll find a way," Sakura said quietly. Her inner fire had returned. "I know they will,"

His eyes flashed suspiciously. "Oh really?" he started slowly advancing on her again. "What makes you so sure of that?"

Sakura rolled her eyes. "Well, they're already in the cave, so…"

"That's nothing!" Haruki snapped. "Don't bother getting your hopes up, honey. They're not coming,"

Sakura shook her head. "They will. I know them. And…" she paused. "I'm guessing they didn't exactly give you a warm welcome when you showed up,"

Haruki's face darkened. "You're wrong, honey. They never even saw me,"

"Really?" Sakura blinked. "I don't think that's true. It's written all over your face,"

He growled, not answering.

Sakura gave a weak chuckle. His anger told her everything she needed to know.

"That means I'm right. Only Yusuke can drive someone that crazy,"

"Shut UP!" Haruki shouted. He raised his giant fist and swung it…

Sensui looked over at Itsuki. "Mr Itsuki, how is everything coming along?"

"Better than I could have predicted, Mr Sensui. At this pace the tunnel will open tonight,"

Sensui laughed. "Perfect. But there's really no rush. We'll have all the time we need to allow for delays,"

"Very well," Itsuki smiled. "However I must confess I'm curious, Mr Sensui. About Ghost,"

Sensui tilted his head. "How so?"

"Once the barrier is cut, he may not like what I have to do with the girl in order to make use of her power," Itsuki chuckled. "Of course, it does depend on how much progress he is able to make with her himself,"

"You needn't worry," Sensui replied. "The boy is only concerned with getting his answers,"

He shifted in his seat, in order to exchange a knowing look with Itsuki.

"Once he has them, his work will be done,"

"You're not going to do anything to Kura, Sensui!" Kuwabara shouted from behind them. "She's stronger than you think, and she won't let you-!"

Gourmet knocked him face first onto the ground. "Shut up. That broad will do whatever we want. You'll see,"

Sensui chuckled softly. He could sense the disturbance coming from Haruki's den. "Feel that, Mr Itsuki? I do believe Ghost has completed his surveillance,"

"I concur, Mr Sensui. And judging from the ki signal, I'd say the Spirit Detective has arrived,"

"We mustn't jump to conclusions," Sensui smirked. "Timing is critical in this endeavour after all,"

Itsuki closed his eyes and gave a secretive smile. "Then perhaps you should ask the boy for an update,"

"I couldn't agree more," Sensui turned towards the hidden entrance. "Ghost!"

Haruki paused and looked sharply behind him.

Sensui called!

He glanced back at Sakura, who was wide-eyed and deathly pale. His fist had avoided her at the last moment, instead creating a hole in the wall beside the chair.

"You think you know them, but you'll see," Haruki breathed through his anger. "You just wait, honey. I'll show you what's really going on,"

Sakura held her breath, not daring to say a word.

"I'm going to see Mr Sensui now, but this conversation is far from over," Haruki warned. His hand moved from the wall towards her slender neck. Sakura whimpered. Good. A little fear would get the message across.

"You better keep quiet while I'm gone," Haruki snarled, and nodded down at the shackles. He'd seen the blood spots from her latest escape attempt. "Don't make a sound, and don't try to get loose. I told you, I'm the only one who can release these restraints. And I won't be doing that until you start cooperating. Got it honey?!"

Without waiting for an answer, Haruki whirled around and stormed out, but not before kicking a table over in his rage.

Sakura was left alone in the den, trembling uncontrollably while her heart hammered against her chest. Haruki's temper was balanced on a razor's edge. The slightest provocation and he'd fall off. There were no two ways about it. Getting sarcastic with him was about the most dangerous thing she could've done.

Stupid! That was so stupid, Sakura! What were you thinking, snapping back? Are you trying to get yourself killed?

More tears spilled over. She couldn't stop them, nor could she wipe them away once they'd fallen.

What's going to happen when he comes back? What does he want from me? I can't do anything without access to my Spirit Energy…

The feeling of utter helplessness was becoming unbearable. Not only that, Sakura felt so cold and vulnerable in this flimsy silk dress. Maybe she could ask for her jacket when he returned. Or would that only irritate him?

Maybe.

On a whim, Sakura glanced around for any sign of the clothes she'd been wearing. Maybe he'd left them nearby after stripping them off and -

She pushed the thought away. It was too much.

With no other options except to wait, Sakura leaned her head back against the chair and tried to calm down with little success. Any moment now, Haruki would return.

Yusuke, Kurama. I know you're coming. But I'm so scared. Please…hurry…

Another tear ran down Sakura's bruised face.

Why is this happening to me?

A.N. Intense, right? Sakura is trying to stay strong in the most perilous of circumstances, and she still doesn't know what Haruki's intentions are. What did you think of this chapter? Any ideas on what will happen next? What is Sensui planning to use Sakura's powers for? Let me know your thoughts in a review!

ANYWAY, it's question time. Now that we're reaching the climax of Chapter Black, I figured now is a good time to ask you all something I've been considering for a long time.

How would you all feel if there was a fifth book in the series?

While planning out the Three Kings arc, I realised the story was getting much denser than I anticipated, and honestly the more I think about it, the more I feel that the story will end in a much more satisfactory way if I were to continue the series for one more instalment.

It would be set after the Three Kings, mainly in the time period where Yusuke remains in the Demon World after the Tournament. I already know what would happen, and exactly how Sakura will play out the rest of her arc. Personally, I think it would be great to explore her solo journey without Yusuke, along with some things in the manga that were only hinted at.

But is that something you all want? I'd love to know. There will be a poll on my bio so you can cast your vote. And as always you can tell me your thoughts in a review or DM.

I will release Chapter 24 as soon as I possibly can. I'm hoping it will be by April 20th. In the meantime, please leave a review and make sure you've subscribed so you don't miss an update.

Also, I have a small request. I got a horrible review left on Chapter 1 of Book 1 (I responded above) basically warning people off the story because it was badly written and Sakura has no bearing on the story. I'd really hate for new readers to see that inaccurate review and get scared off, so I'd appreciate maybe one or two positive comments left on Book 1. If you're that way inclined. Thanks in advance, and we'll see you in the next chapter.

Next chapter: The game begins, and Sakura is in for the fight of her life.
