A.N. And we're back for another chapter. Let's dive in without delay!
Wolfs Child: Here you go. Sorry for the wait, I've been extremely unwell with our freeloading pal Covid-19!
Ghost of Magic: I have an announcement about that at the end of the chapter!
Starrat: Hope you enjoy!
Hina714: Yes, Haruki is pretty much beyond redemption at this point. And Sensui has long had his own schemes for Sakura. You'll see :) As for Kurama, he'll stop at nothing to ensure Sakura's safety as well as his revenge. Hope you enjoy the chapter!
hw0134160: Kurama is on his way, but it won't be easy. Haruki isn't going to let Sakura go and he's certainly not going to allow the boys anywhere near her without ferocious resistance.
I have an announcement about a fifth book at the end, I wonder what you'll think. I'm disappointed to say that my brother continues to be a jerk, and I've actually spent the majority of the last six weeks battling with a second, quite severe case of Covid. I can breathe properly now but the cough and fatigue still lingers.
Thankyou for the encouragement. A few more trolls made their way onto the story...you'll see my response.
See you soon!
kaigirl16: Haruki's theory isn't based on much besides his belief that Sakura isn't human. In his twisted mind, she and Yusuke can't be related because by his logic, they aren't the same species.
Thankyou for your kind words, they helped a lot, especially when I got spammed by a few trolls last week.
KarinaGuardian: I'm working on improving things. Announcement about that below!
Guest: Thanks, that means a lot. If anything, it just makes me more determined to write.
Ashley Kirk: Thankyou so so much. I really tried to make this the kind of story I'd want to read as a diehard fan.
B Martinez: Here you go, sorry for the wait. I've been very unwell with Covid.
Sammie42: Thankyou!
NightWolfRUNNER: What else can I say. Thankyou so much beautiful girl. I just adore you!
Guest999/Reika88: It's honestly hard to know where to begin with you two. And even though NightWolfRUNNER pretty much said it all in her comment, I have to address this before I pretend you two don't exist.
I've never deleted reviews until now, but in your case I made an exception. I did leave the final comment up on this story because I think people should see the kind of abuse you spent several hours sending my way.
Yes, Sakura cries. So does Gohan from Dragon Ball Z and Deku from My Hero Academia. This doesn't make someone weak, and you clearly do not understand how trauma works. Nor do you know how it can effect someone's emotional state. You also don't understand how to be a decent human being.
I really couldn't care less if you like my work or not. But this was beyond that. The two of you, by your own admission, tag teamed me for almost a whole day, constantly spamming me with comments calling Sakura a c-, saying you hope she gets r- to death or becomes a sex slave...those comments were truly disturbing and you two need serious help if you think that kind of talk is appropriate.
Oh, and one more thing. I will absolutely NOT be giving up this series. In fact, all you have done is convinced me that I need to finish right to the end, even if you think it's a "piece of s-"
Don't bother coming back. I will delete anything else you write without hesitation.
And with that being said, I hope everyone else enjoys!
Chapter 24
Haruki paused in the narrow passage, halfway between his den and Sensui's lair. For a moment, he could only stand frozen in the dark, silently listening to the blood still pounding in his ears.
His encounter with the boys had not gone according to plan. Hiei had easily dispelled his Shadow Puppets. And the Spirit Fox had called him a coward.
"There is nowhere for you to hide from me!"
Despite his best efforts, Haruki couldn't get Kurama's voice out of his head. The Spirit Fox might as well be standing behind him at this very moment, repeating the taunt over and over.
Coward. Coward. Coward.
It was suffocating. Without meaning to, Haruki clutched at the jagged wall to steady himself.
Get a grip. They're only words…just empty words…
What did the Spirit Fox know about him? Nothing. Those threats of revenge were irrelevant. Hollow.
Remember Sensui's plan. You have control. They can't do anything as long as you have her, and they know it.
The thought eased his pounding heart. So, the fox demon decided to label him as a coward? They'd see who the coward truly was soon enough.
Haruki forced himself to take another step towards the main lair when Sensui and the promise of reassurance awaited. Everything had gone according to plan so far. The rest would follow.
He was greeted by the sight of Sensui lounging back on the sofa, Itsuki working away in the boat, and Kuwabara being guarded by Gourmet.
"Ghost," Sensui looked over with a smirk. "Judging by your appearance, I take it that you have an update for us,"
"I do, Mr Sensui. My surveillance was more than successful. And don't worry, Game Master has been informed. He will be ready when they arrive,"
Sensui surveyed Haruki in silence. Something was off. "I'm glad to hear it. But you look rattled, my boy. Is there something I should know about?"
Haruki turned his back on Gourmet's smug look. The last thing he needed was more insults from that creature.
"Not at all, Mr Sensui. They just made the usual empty threats and swore revenge," Haruki plastered a smile on his face. "If it wasn't so tedious, I would've found it quite entertaining,"
Gourmet's derisive laugh rang out. "Yeah right. Tell me another one,"
Haruki scowled. "I don't need your input!"
"Too bad. You're getting it," Gourmet shook his head. "You're not fooling anyone, and especially not me,"
Haruki whirled around. "If you have something to say, then say it to my face!"
"Well, that tells me everything," Gourmet smirked. "What really happened? Did your ego get bruised?"
Haruki couldn't respond. His rage was choking him.
"You're not answering," Gourmet's eyes glittered. "What's wrong? Fox got your tongue?"
Haruki swallowed, forcing himself to speak through gritted teeth. "No. The Spirit Detective couldn't do anything, and he knows it. I have everything under control,"
Gourmet snickered. "It don't look that way to me, Hari-chan,"
Haruki growled. His fists clenched.
"Oh, there it is," Gourmet laughed harder. "Little Hari-chan, getting all worked up over a nickname. So sad,"
Haruki's temper ignited. He was about to spring forward, about to close the distance between him and his colleague and teach him a lesson he'd never forget…
Sensui's commanding voice rang out. "We're long past the time for childish bickering,"
The rebuke stopped Haruki in his tracks.
"At this crucial stage, nothing must distract from the goal," Sensui turned around and locked eyes with his minions. "Is that clear to both of you?"
Haruki lowered his hand. "Yes, Mr Sensui. I understand,"
"I should think so," Sensui said calmly. "However, you must concede that Gourmet does have a point, my boy. Do you really think you'll get the answers you seek if you cannot control your temper?"
Gourmet chuckled. "Told you so, Hari-chan,"
Haruki's whole body stiffened. "You-!"
"Ghost!" Sensui called sternly. "Come here,"
Reluctantly, Haruki tore himself away from his hated colleague and trudged over to the couch where Sensui was reclining.
"Focus, Haruki," Sensui ordered. "You must know by now that the time is near,"
Haruki's eyes widened. "What are you saying?"
Sensui only smiled in response. "Don't you think your lovely guest is ready to talk?"
Haruki's jaw dropped. He seemed to take a moment to find his voice. "You…you mean it, sir?" he whispered.
Sensui looked the boy up and down. Haruki's face was not unlike that of a child on Christmas morning.
Perfect.
"You have been so very patient, my boy," Sensui nodded. "It would be remiss of me to keep you waiting any longer,"
Haruki stared at Sensui. He seemed too stunned to speak.
"But remember the promise you made, Ghost," Sensui continued. There was an edge of warning to his words. "Questioning aside, the girl must be kept in pristine condition,"
Haruki ran his tongue over his lips. "Very well Mr Sensui," he muttered. "I will do exactly as you ask,"
An evil smile appeared on Sensui's face. "As long as you follow my instructions, do precisely as we discussed, you may begin your interrogation,"
Haruki nodded once.
"Inform me when she's…ready," Sensui indicated the hidden den. "Go on now. It's not right to keep a lady waiting,"
Haruki remained silent, only hastily bowing his head before turning on his heel and heading for the secret door. The ecstasy in his heart was quickly flowing throughout his entire body. Sensui had given permission to start questioning Sakura…he was really going to get his answers from her…
What should I ask her first? Maybe I'll -
"You won't get away with this, you bastard!" an angry voice hissed. "Hiding behind a girl…and you call yourself a man!?"
Haruki paused. Kuwabara was shooting him death glares from beside Gourmet, all the while attempting to escape the bindings.
"Excuse me?" Haruki raised an eyebrow. His excitement was rapidly being replaced with annoyance.
"You heard me!" Kuwabara's voice was full of venom. "I can see right through you. Acting all tough, using Kura as a shield…you're a coward!"
Coward. The word stabbed into Haruki.
Kuwabara's eyes narrowed. "Just wait until Urameshi and Kurama get their hands on you!" he said scathingly. "They'll tear you to shreds. And once I get loose, I'll be helping them!"
Haruki's fist closed tightly. He took a step forward, his temper skyrocketing again…but as he glared at Kuwabara, he knew exactly how to put the boy in his place.
"You might not be concerned with your own well-being, Kuwabara," Haruki said coldly. "That's entirely your choice. But I must remind you, there is someone else here who could easily get hurt,"
Kuwabara froze. The expression of rage on his face fell away.
"If you aren't careful, she might suffer the consequences of your attitude," Haruki smiled at the apprehensive look Kuwabara now wore. "I suggest you keep that in mind before you start running your mouth,"
Kuwabara went pale. "You wouldn't!" he spat.
Haruki wasn't fooled. Beneath the thin veneer of anger and disbelief, the boy was afraid for his friend.
"Will I, won't I? What an intriguing question," Haruki said teasingly, though his words were laced with malice. "But if you insist on pushing me, you'll find out,"
Without waiting for Kuwabara to respond, Haruki disappeared into the den.
Itsuki chuckled at the boy's retreating back. "Oh my. He's certainly in no mood for games, Mr Sensui. Are you sure he'll be able to complete his task in such a state?"
"Does it matter?" Sensui asked mildly. "Leave the boy to me, Itsuki. You focus on the tunnel,"
Itsuki returned Sensui's secretive look with one of his own.
It will be most interesting to see how far Ghost can get with Miss Urameshi.
Under the cover of darkness, Yusuke squeezed his eyes shut and tried again. If he could only communicate with his twin for a moment…if he could say just one word to her so she'd know hope wasn't lost…!
Kura! It's Yusuke. Can you hear me? We're coming!
No response. Yusuke's fists clenched as despair welled up inside him. This wasn't just about distance, or the interference that came from her being in a territory. It was sabotage, plain and simple.
He would've given anything to drive his fist into Haruki's scarred face. What the hell had Sensui and his gang done to cut off Sakura's abilities?
For now, there was nothing he could do except try and get through the cave as quickly as possible. It was a terrible thought, but true nonetheless
Kura, I know you're strong. Whatever they've done, whatever they've planned, you have to fight. I know you can do it!
Yusuke forced himself to keep putting one foot in front of the other. He had no option but to trust in his sister's strength.
Regardless, they needed to be prepared for anything. It was the only choice. They all knew it, though nobody had actually voiced the fact. There was no telling what they might find in the lair. No telling what condition Sakura might be in. He just had to keep moving. Towards Sensui.
Keep going. There's not much time.
Apart from his teammates' footsteps, the only sound Yusuke heard was his own pounding heart. It was hammering in his chest, refusing to settle for even a moment. He had a suspicion that it wouldn't until this was over.
The group stopped. They'd come to a crossroad. The first fork in their path. Yusuke stared at it for a moment before glancing sideways at Mitari.
"Which way?"
"To the right," Mitari muttered, and immediately moved to lead them on.
Kurama fished a seed from his pocket and tossed it to the ground. The others observed it bloom into a small bud that threw off dim light.
"Spreading your seeds, Kurama?" Yusuke asked, indicating the trail of glowing buds left in their wake.
"These are lamp weeds," Kurama explained. "They're to show us the way out, like phosphorescent…breadcrumbs,"
"Assuming of course that we live to come back," Hiei pointed out.
Kurama couldn't help but smile at this logic.
However, one person among the four wasn't smiling. Yusuke was looking very intently at the new ally guiding them.
"We have to keep moving," Mitari's voice quivered slightly. "Hurry!"
Yusuke wordlessly caught Mitari's shoulder and stared at him. No, it wasn't a trick of what little light existed. Mitari was still pale and trembling. He had been ever since Haruki's unwelcome appearance, and Yusuke was positive it was more than just the fear of what they were about to face.
"What's the deal, Mitari?" Yusuke's tone made it clear he was in no mood to mess around. "You're nervous as a turkey on Christmas morning. You wanna fill us in on why?"
Mitari bit his lip and looked away. "I…can't be certain," he muttered. "It could be nothing,"
Kurama stepped forward, his eyes narrowing again. "Mitari, if you have any suspicions, however unlikely, you must tell us. The smallest detail could prove critical,"
Silence. Mitari wrestled with himself on whether to tell. If he was wrong, they could end up panicking over nothing. But if he was right…
Mitari looked at the ground. There was nothing else for it. "I…It's Miss Kura. I can't be certain, but something Ghost said…" he gulped. "I think she might be in real trouble,"
The boys froze.
Yusuke's mouth went dry. "Why?" he choked out. "You think they're going to kill her?"
Mitari shook his head. He looked as if he were about to faint. "No, I don't think that's it," he stammered. "If I'm right, it's worse,"
"What do you mean?" Kurama had never sounded so serious. He was hoping against hope that Mitari was not about to say what he secretly feared.
Mitari took a deep breath. "What Ghost said…about bringing her to enlightenment…" he forced himself to make eye contact. "That's exactly what Mr Sensui said to me…before showing me the Chapter Black tape,"
Yusuke's heart stopped beating for a moment.
Sakura sat up a little straighter in the chair. She could hear footsteps.
Someone's coming. But who?
Haruki, Sensui…none of the likely options were good, and she certainly wasn't naive enough to think it was Yusuke or Kurama coming to her rescue. Even so, she had to hang on until the boys arrived.
Sakura braced herself. No matter who showed up, no matter what they did, she was not going to fall apart. Somehow, she had to survive whatever was about to happen.
"Hey honey. Have you calmed down yet?"
With a modicum of short-lived relief, Sakura saw it was not Sensui or the other monster who entered. Her captor was back, looking slightly calmer himself.
"Looks like you have. Good. It'll make things much easier,"
A chill went down Sakura's spine. He was even smiling again.
Not good.
To everyone's amazement, Kurama was the first to speak. He was obviously making an effort to keep his voice steady.
"Mitari, are you saying you think Sensui might force Kura to watch Chapter Black?"
Mitari nodded. He hadn't stopped shaking.
"And you're basing that off a single remark?" Hiei almost scoffed. "What makes you so certain?"
"'It's time to bring you to enlightenment'. That's what Mr Sensui told me," Mitari shuddered. "Ghost said they need her abilities once the tunnel is open. And he wants something from her too…something that means they need to keep her alive without using Gourmet's power,"
It was as though an invisible hand was twisting Yusuke's insides. "Oh God…if that's what they're planning…no, no…"
Chapter Black…the compilation of humanity at its worst. The tape that was said to be enough to turn anyone against their own kind in five minutes. Was Sensui twisted enough to force his little sister to watch such horrors?
Stupid question. Of course he was.
Yusuke pressed his hands over his face. His breathing was already starting to speed up. Despite the work she'd put in, Sakura was already so traumatised. If Mitari's suspicion was right, then Yusuke didn't even want to imagine how such an experience would leave his twin. And if the footage really was so provocative…then he might have to…
No. Don't go there. You can't. She's strong. You know she's strong. You have to-
"Yusuke, it's not over yet,"
A hand went on his shoulder. Yusuke looked up to see Kurama's hard expression, but all that mattered right now was the panic swelling inside him.
"Kurama…" he choked. "You know what it means if he's right…if Sensui does this…"
"I could be wrong, Mr Urameshi," Mitari burst out. He hoped he was. He'd never hoped for something so much.
"Even if Mitari is correct, it's likely that Chapter Black will only be used as a last resort," Kurama said quietly. Those green eyes were ablaze. "Haruki still has his own reasons for taking Kura. He won't want to jeopardise that unnecessarily,"
Yusuke swallowed hard, fighting to stay calm. Kurama had a valid point.
"We don't yet know what Sensui wants with her abilities," Kurama went on. "For all we know, this is a tactic intended to throw us off guard. We will be far better off in pressing forward,"
Yusuke took a deep breath. "Ok, but what if-?"
Kurama gripped his arm hard. "She's not the girl she was at the tournament, Yusuke. Remember that," he said quietly. "I'm sure they'll have underestimated Kura's strength, even if they do plan to show her the tape. She'll hold on as long as possible,"
The fox demon and the Spirit Detective stared at each other. A million unspoken words seemed to pass between them in the silence.
In truth, Kurama was placing all his hope in this statement. His flower needed to hold on. The alternative was unconscionable.
"She won't have to," Yusuke vowed. "We'll rescue her before that happens. Kuwabara too,"
"Then why are we standing around?" Hiei snapped unexpectedly. "There's no time!"
Mitari nodded quickly. "This way. Come on!"
As they set off again, Kurama stole another glance at Hiei, and his eyes widened slightly. He could've sworn there was a faint glow shimmering on Hiei's forehead, but the next moment he blinked and the light had vanished.
Perhaps he had just imagined it.
Haruki crossed the floor and crouched in front of Sakura. She didn't move.
"Come on, honey. Let me see your pretty face,"
Resigned, Sakura looked up. Haruki's eyes were shining with excitement. He looked pleased at her obedience.
"Good girl. You're learning,"
Sakura gave a small, non-committal jerk of the head. Haruki cupped her chin and gazed at her.
So beautiful.
To his delight, his little porcelain doll didn't pull away, or react much at all. Haruki's smile widened.
"Things got a little heated before, didn't they?" he said softly. "I don't want that to happen again. I'm sure you don't either,"
Sakura shook her head briefly. "N-no,"
"That's right," Haruki grinned, and started stroking circles over her cheek with his thumb. Even bruised, her skin felt like silk. Sakura winced slightly in pain.
"Shhhh," Haruki placed a finger on her lips. "It's ok, honey. It's really ok,"
Sakura fought a mad desire to roll her eyes. When was he going to drop it? Nothing about this situation was ok.
Haruki didn't seem to notice. He was too busy examining her arms, and the fresh cuts left behind from her useless struggling. Sakura probably expected harsh retribution, but Haruki had other ideas. This latest injury was the first chance he had to start softening her up.
"Those look painful," he mused. "Was it worth the effort, honey?"
Sakura lowered her gaze. It was so humiliating that he was right. All she'd gotten from her escape efforts was more pain.
"Don't you think you should make this easier on yourself and settle down?" Haruki's fingers started running through her hair, in a slow and rhythmic manner.
Just like the Spirit Fox does.
As much as he hated the thought of copying that devious creature, Haruki had seen his approach work the night before. It was worth a try.
Be gentle. Keep her calm. You saw how she opened up to the Spirit Fox last night once he had her settled.
"I don't like seeing you this way, honey," Haruki pushed the hair back from Sakura's face and tucked it behind her ear. "I'd really like to release these restraints. You'd like that too, right?"
She shivered, but otherwise didn't respond. Haruki realised the trembling wasn't just from fear. Perfect. Another opportunity.
"You look a little cold," he dropped his voice to a sympathetic tone.
Silence.
Haruki raised an eyebrow. "You're trembling, honey. I can see it,"
More silence.
"You know, all you have to do is ask nicely, and I might be able to make you a bit more comfortable,"
No answer.
Haruki growled and clenched his fist. So, she was still being stubborn? Not for much longer if he had any say in the matter…
"Do you really think you'll get the answers you seek if you cannot control your temper?"
The memory of Sensui's words caused Haruki to take a breath.
Stick to the plan. Be gentle.
"I mean it honey. I'd really like to let you out," he took her face in his hand again. "The problem is, I don't think I can trust you to behave just yet,"
Sakura tensed, as if she wanted to pull away but thought better of it. Haruki tightened his grip on her jaw slightly to hold her in place.
"Of course, we could change that," a sly smile tugged at his lips as a new idea came to him. "See, there's a lot I want to ask you. And if you answer my first question, I might be able to give you something too. Something to help you warm up a little,"
Sakura swallowed. He was clearly trying to smooth talk her, but she was so cold and uncomfortable in this dress that the risk of agreeing was probably worth it.
"You can ask," she said carefully. "But honestly, it might be easier to answer if I had my jacket,"
He shook his head. "Not until you give me something first. I've been waiting too long,"
Sakura suppressed her irritation. This was the pettiest form of blackmail she could imagine. "So, if I answer your question, you'll let me have my jacket?"
"I'm sure I can find it somewhere,"
Sakura hesitated. She didn't trust a word he was saying. In truth, she was terrified of what he might ask her, and there was no guarantee he would actually return her hoodie. In fact, she was all but certain he wouldn't.
But at the same time, he seemed to be making an effort to avoid violence. And she really was freezing like this.
Just test the waters. But be careful. You don't know what he wants.
"Ok," Sakura hated the thought of giving in, but she had nothing to lose. The thought of being marginally more comfortable was irresistible. "Ok. I'll do my best to answer what you want to know,"
Haruki's eyes lit up. "Good girl,"
Sakura steeled herself as best she could. "Go on, then. Ask," Try as she might, her words quivered.
Haruki gazed at her in wonder. He hardly knew where to begin.
"Ok, honey. Why don't we start where it all began for me," he said slowly. "The finals of the Dark Tournament,"
Sakura bit her lip. What does he mean?
"After the tournament, after everything you'd been through…why did you convince your team to spare me?"
There were many words to describe what Sakura felt in response to such a question. Stunned would've been accurate, along with shocked and speechless.
Haruki scowled. She wasn't answering fast enough. "Well?" he said impatiently. "Tell me why!"
"I told you why at the time," Sakura mumbled. "You wanted to die with Sakyo. I thought you had. So how did you survive?"
Haruki hissed, sliding his hand down from Sakura's jaw to her neck. "I'm the one asking questions, not you!" he snapped. "Why did you do it?"
"I…it's like I said," Sakura stammered in terror. He wasn't putting any pressure on her throat, but that could change very quickly. "I had this feeling that you never had any choice…never had any control over your life. I thought you deserved to at least choose how you went. That's the truth, I swear!"
Haruki's eyes narrowed. Without taking his hand away, he scrutinised her as if trying to detect any trace of a lie. Just when Sakura thought she would melt from fear, he finally let go.
"I wasn't sure, but now I am. You really are telling the truth," he murmured. "It's all falling into place,"
He was getting closer. Much too close. That demented smile was back.
"Like I said, honey. That was the moment I knew the truth about you," Haruki chuckled. "The moment I realised…"
Sakura flinched, pressing her back into the chair. How should she defend herself if he tried anything else?
Haruki stared at her almost hungrily. "You're more than you appear on the surface, my little porcelain doll,"
It was too much. Those chocolate brown eyes, so wide and fearful. That milky white skin, so translucent and delicate. That silken hair, black as midnight and waiting for him to run his hands through the strands.
His gaze moved downwards towards her lips. Small, slightly fuller at the bottom and the most delicate shade of pink imaginable.
So beautiful.
They seemed to be calling for him, inviting his exploration. He wondered what she might taste like, now that her mouth was no longer constricted by the scarf.
Haruki paused. If he wanted to know, why shouldn't he find out? After all, Sakura belonged to him now.
Sakura watched his eyes close. He leaned in, and she knew exactly why.
No! She thought desperately, too afraid to even protest. Please, no!
She didn't want this. Not him. He wasn't allowed to do anything of the sort to her…
A flash of gold seared across Haruki's vision. The unforgiving gaze of Yoko Kurama.
"You were marked for death from the moment you dared to touch her!"
Haruki jerked away and looked behind him in alarm. Surely he was being paranoid. There was no way the fox could actually be there.
Of course, there was nothing to see. But for a moment, just a fleeting moment, that fox demon might as well have been breathing down his very neck…
Meanwhile, Sakura was shaking uncontrollably to the point her restraints rattled. If Haruki was brazen enough to attempt what he'd just done, there was nothing stopping him from going further. Much further.
She wanted to escape. She wanted to rip herself free of the chair and run as far away from him as possible. But she couldn't. There was no way out.
Haruki turned back to his petrified hostage and saw that her lovely face had turned ghostly white.
"Shhhh," he murmured. "It's ok, honey. Don't be afraid," He brushed his fingers against her collarbone. "You answered my question, and I promised you something in return. You'll be much more comfortable on the bed again,"
The offer only succeeded in making Sakura's skin crawl. "Can I just have my jacket, please?" she muttered. "Really, that would be fine,"
Haruki's finger traced along the neckline of her dress. "Why would you want your jacket?" he scoffed. "You don't need that thing,"
"It would make me more comfortable," Sakura barely avoided gritting her teeth. "You said you'd find it if I answered your question. And I did,"
"That's true," Haruki chuckled. "All right, I'll see if I can remember where I left it,"
He looked at her slyly before vanishing into the darkness. A shiver went down Sakura's spine again. He wasn't going to simply return her jacket. She knew it. Not without some kind of trick.
"Oh, here it is," Haruki called out from the corner. "But there's something you should know…"
Something was tossed at Sakura's feet. At first glance it was just a pile of rags, but on closer inspection Sakura realised what she was actually looking at. Her heart constricted. Amid the smouldering ashes she could see what had once been her clothes, now little more than charred scraps of fabric.
"They got a bit damaged at some point. Are you sure you still want them, honey?"
Sakura's eyes brimmed with tears again. She didn't even try to stop them.
How could he do this?
Not only had he treated her as his own personal dress-up doll, he'd actually destroyed her clothing. And for no reason except that he could. It was revolting. He just wanted control.
"Why?" Sakura looked up at Haruki's insufferably smug face. "Why would you do this?"
"Like I said, honey. You don't need them," he replied. "That dress suits your figure so much better,"
Sakura felt sick. The implication was painted all over his face.
Haruki crouched in front of her. "Now, why don't we get you set up on the bed again? It's a lot nicer than this chair,"
Sakura turned away. She didn't trust herself to speak calmly.
"Come on, honey," he whispered. "Don't be like that,"
When she didn't respond, Haruki scowled. "You know, I would think you'd be a little more grateful," he indicated around the room. "I spent a lot of time setting this up. You could at least say thank you,"
Sakura could feel the anger swelling inside her, but she couldn't show it. "I realise that, but I'm still wondering why you went to all this effort in the first place,"
Haruki fell silent. He was supposed to be the one asking questions, not her. But at the same time, his little porcelain doll did seem genuinely confused at the situation.
Like Mr Sensui said. You catch more flies with honey. Give her something, and she'll be more willing to open up.
"I suppose you're right," Haruki said at last. "This did happen very quickly, after all,"
Sakura nodded. "I just want to understand," she said in a small voice. It seemed least likely to aggravate him.
Haruki looked pleased at this more submissive attitude. She was starting to play nice at last.
"Well, it really goes back to the finals. Like I said, that was the moment I knew you were different,"
Sakura took a breath. "How so?"
"You convinced them all to spare me, based on a feeling. And I realised then. No human would do what you did,"
Sakura shook her head, trying to make sense of this. "No human? Why would you-?" And then it dawned on her. "You've seen it, haven't you? Sensui showed you Chapter Black,"
Haruki nodded. "Of course, but I've always known humans are monsters," he started rubbing the scar over his eye again. "I have for years. Ever since…" he cut himself short, and Sakura caught sight of the fear and anger on his face. But a moment later, Haruki seemed to shake it off.
There's no need to go over that now. Not yet.
He turned back to her. "Chapter Black is the path to enlightenment, honey. It showed me what I'd known all along. Humans are monsters. But you…"
He turned back to her. Sakura held her breath.
"You're different, Sakura Urameshi," Haruki whispered. "You're not what you seem on the surface. And I know, that you…are not human,"
Mitari considered the next fork in their path before pointing to the right. "And here we go that way,"
"Mitari, I don't know what we would've done without you here. This place has more forks than one of those fancy table settings," Yusuke muttered.
He glanced back at the trail of lamp weeds glowing in the darkness behind them. "We better hope those lights don't burn out. We'll be wandering around here through our mid-twenties,"
"Don't be worried; I won't let us get lost," Mitari promised.
"We should go," Kurama said.
It was hard to know exactly how long they'd been walking, but Yusuke's best bet was it had been around thirty minutes since Haruki's vanishing act. They couldn't afford to waste anymore time.
It won't be long, my love. We'll be there soon. Haruki will pay.
Hiei alone remained silent and stone-faced. Kurama stole another glance at the fire demon, wondering what was going through his mind. While Hiei didn't care for Kuwabara, Sakura was different. Hiei could deny it all he wanted, but Kurama knew he held grave concerns for Sakura's safety. The display of anger and defiance to Haruki was proof enough, especially considering how Hiei himself had taken Sakura captive so long ago.
A drastic change. Likely because of Yukina.
Whether Yukina was responsible or not, Kurama was grateful. Even after making it to the cave, he knew Haruki would not allow them to rescue Sakura so easily. It would probably take all their efforts to eliminate him. And that didn't even take Sensui and the other psychics into consideration…
As long as I am the one to finish Haruki off. Anything less is unacceptable.
To Yusuke, this journey through the cave was quickly resembling the road to hell. But as he looked around in the darkness for any sign of danger, his resolve was strong. Every step brought him closer to stopping Sensui. Closer to saving the world, his friend…his sister.
Haruki's declaration was met with complete silence. For a moment, Sakura was too stunned to reply.
"Not…human?" Sakura repeated in disbelief. "W-what do you mean, not human?"
"You're not one of those creatures, honey," Haruki's eyes glittered. "That's the only explanation. Humans are a disease. All they do is destroy whatever they touch. But not you,"
Sakura couldn't believe what she was hearing. It made absolutely no sense. Surely there was something else going on. There had to be!
"Haruki, that's…that's crazy," her voice cracked. "You've got it all wrong. I'm a human, and…and Chapter Black is only half the story-"
"Don't try to deny it, honey," he growled. "I saw it with my own eyes. You survived things that would destroy anyone else. You showed me mercy when I didn't deserve it. You're not human, and deep down you know I'm right!"
Sakura shook her head. "No, really," she said desperately. "I'm not hiding anything. I never have. At the tournament, I just wanted to give you that choice. It had nothing to do with-"
"I know what I saw!" Haruki shot back. "I saw you fight in the tournament. I've watched those tapes countless times since. You're not human, honey. It's obvious, and not just from your fighting. Those memories Akumu showed everyone…"
A shudder went through Sakura. He couldn't bring her up. Not that woman.
"No human could survive all that, let alone still smile, be happy, care about other people…" he breathed deeply. "You didn't take revenge on Akumu. You said you pitied us. Humans don't do that. And from that moment, I knew I couldn't rest until I understood exactly what you are,"
His logic and the sound of that woman's name was making Sakura's head spin. She choked back a sob and looked away, trying to make sense of what she was hearing.
This is insane. This can't be true!
"Shhhh," Haruki resumed the rhythmic stroking of her hair. "I don't like seeing you cry, honey. It's ok, I promise. I know you didn't intend to deceive me or anyone else. Sensui explained everything,"
"What?!"
"After our little game at the hospital, he realised that you aren't aware of your true self. So it was my job to bring you here,"
Sensui's been encouraging this sick fantasy. Sakura was outraged. But why?! What does he stand to gain from me?
Haruki's whole face was alive with joy. "I know, honey. It's a lot to take in at once. But there's nothing to worry about now. Once the tunnel is complete, everything will fall into place. It'll be just like Mr Sakyo always dreamed…"
Sakura's head whirled. "So that's how you survived," she whispered.
"What was that?" Haruki had been so busy twirling Sakura's hair around his finger that he'd missed the comment.
"S-Sakyo. He made you promise, didn't he? He made you promise to open the tunnel without him,"
Haruki smirked. "You worked it out. Clever girl,"
His fingers ghosted Sakura's skin, tracing little hearts on her bruised cheek before moving down her neck, then towards her chest.
"That's another reason I knew you were different, honey. Much too smart to be a human,"
Sakura froze. He was inching closer and closer to her breast.
"You're right, Mr Sakyo told me to continue his work. He said as long as I was alive, his dream would live on. And so I used one of his secret passages to escape the stadium while it collapsed around me,"
Haruki paused, and chuckled. "Oh dear. Listen to me, rambling on about those minor details when you and I have so much more to discuss…"
He eyed her lips again. She was right where he wanted her. Now was the perfect moment to show her she belonged to him.
Haruki leaned in slowly. Sakura gasped when she realised what was about to happen. And she couldn't allow it. Not without a fight.
No!
The instant he was about to make contact, Sakura twisted away and his lips came crashing down on her neck. Her sharp intake of breath made him tremble with delight.
Sakura whimpered. "Please…stop that…I don't want this…"
He ignored her, and moved his mouth down her collarbone, over the abrasions he'd made.
"Haruki, please," Sakura recoiled. "The scratches…you're hurting me,"
"And who's fault is that?" he murmured. "If you'd just been a good girl, they wouldn't have happened. But no. You had to go and fight back, so you have to deal with the consequences,"
Had Sakura's legs been free, she would've kicked him in his most vulnerable part for saying that.
"I'm going to learn your secrets, honey," Haruki breathed between kisses. "One way or another, I'm going to learn everything there is to know about you,"
Sakura shook her head, forcing him to back away slightly. "Stop! Stop it! There's no secret!"
Haruki's face was already darkening. "What did you just say?"
"I said there's no secret," she insisted, even though her voice shook. Her head had started spinning again. "You've misunderstood. I'm a human, Haruki! I'm human!"
SMACK!
His backhand took Sakura's breath away.
"How many times?" Haruki hissed. "How many times do I have to tell you not to make me lose my temper?! Why do you keep insisting on being so stubborn?!"
"Because you're wrong about me, and humans in general," She glared back at him while blinking stars away. "And don't touch me like that again. I mean it,"
It was a reckless statement and Sakura knew he wouldn't take kindly to the order, but she wasn't going to sit here and endure his assault quietly. Only one person had permission to kiss her.
He merely laughed. "Oh? Why shouldn't I?"
Sakura fought the dizziness long enough to reply. She opened her mouth, planning to remind him of Kurama's wrath, warn him of Yusuke's anger, but the words that came out even stunned her.
"Because I said so,"
Shock flashed across Haruki's scarred face before it twisted in angered disbelief. With a growl, he shot out his hand and seized a fistful of Sakura's hair.
"Is that right?" He hissed. "Because you said so?"
"Y-yes…" Sakura whimpered, still refusing to look away. She felt several hairs being wrenched from the roots.
Haruki tightened his grip. "Interesting idea, honey. But you seem to be forgetting that you're hardly in a position to do anything at all right now,"
"Who said anything about me doing it?" Sakura hissed while swallowing her pain. She felt like he was about to scalp her.
Haruki's eyes narrowed. He knew what she was getting at. "I see it now. You're still under his spell. You still think they're going to come for you,"
Sakura blinked through the dizziness and locked eyes with her captor, knowing she would pay dearly for what she was about to say. "I don't think," she whispered. "I know,"
The growl in Haruki's throat quickly morphed into a snarl.
"You know?!" he repeated, giving her a hard shake. "You know they'll come? You really don't get it, do you honey?"
"I'm the one who doesn't get it?" Sakura mumbled. She was far too dizzy to control her tongue at this point. "Do you even know the meaning of irony?"
Haruki hissed again and his free hand swung back. He was going to remind her who was in charge.
Sakura's shoulders tensed up. She quickly closed her eyes, ready to endure the underserved punishment…
But the blow never came.
"If you've harmed her…if you've so much as bruised my flower, the only thing you will wish for is a faster demise,"
The memory of those cold eyes was enough to stop Haruki's hand an inch from Sakura's face.
For a brief moment, there was silence. Haruki stared at his hand.
"Remember the promise you made, Ghost. Questioning aside, the girl must be kept in pristine condition,"
Sensui was right. He had to keep his temper in check. They needed Sakura when the barrier was cut.
Without letting go of her hair, Haruki looked down at Sakura. His well-muscled chest heaved as he tried to control his anger. He understood now. As long as the Spirit Fox was alive, she couldn't truly be his.
"You're so sure of the fox, and the detective…" he panted. "But just wait. Just you wait. You'll see…I'll show you…"
Though she trembled, Sakura looked back at him without flinching. Her eyes were huge, bloodshot and filled with terror.
Wait…
There was something else. Behind the fear, he saw it. The spark, one that would soon ignite into a determined fire. The same fire he'd seen before so many of her victories in the tournament.
He was losing his grasp on this extraordinary girl. He needed to regain control, and quickly.
"Incredible," Haruki laughed. "My little porcelain doll still has some fight left in her. I have to admire that. But it's no use pretending to be brave in front of me, honey. How many times did I see you fall apart during the Dark Tournament?"
Sakura glared at him, but her bravado flickered. He could see it in her eyes.
"You know it's hopeless," Haruki continued. "Even if they made it here, Sensui will finish them. You have no idea what he's capable of…and me, for that matter. Yet here you are, still desperately clinging to the hope that one of them has a chance of coming after you,"
Sakura blinked furiously, but in this position there was no way to hide it. Her eyes were swimming with tears again.
Haruki smirked. Sakura's spirit was crumbling. All she needed was a little push to collapse in a metaphorical heap.
"It's just like Akumu said," he chuckled, relishing how Sakura shuddered when he said her old opponent's name. "You're still that scared little girl, crying to be saved. I seem to recall Toguro saying something similar. Do you remember?"
He finally released Sakura's hair without waiting for an answer, roughly throwing her aside.
"This time, things are going to be different. Once Sensui opens the tunnel, it'll be the start of something new for both of us. You'll see,"
Sakura barely had time to catch her breath before Haruki had dragged her back to face him.
"So here's what's going to happen, honey," Haruki snarled. "You're not going to tell me what to do, or what to think. You're just going to sit here and answer all my questions when I ask, and when Sensui comes in, you'll do everything he tells you to do. Is that clear?!"
Sakura's terror was paralysing. All she could do was give him a feeble nod.
"Glad to hear it. Even if you refuse, we have ways of making you play along. It'll be much easier for you if you don't force our hand. Got it?!"
She nodded again. At last, he let go of her and stepped away.
"This is your last warning, honey. I don't want to do something I'll regret," he pointed an accusing finger. "I don't know what you're hiding, but I know you aren't human. You can't be!"
Haruki kicked over a table loaded with flowers before storming off into the passageway. It was the only place he was guaranteed to be left alone for a minute.
Sakura leaned back against the chair with silent tears dripping off her face. In light of what she'd learned, the gravity of the situation was crashing down on her all over again.
So all of this - her violent abduction and imprisonment, the dress, the outlandish display of flowers - was solely based on a twisted belief that she was some other species? And it seemed Sensui thought the same, or at the very least he'd encouraged it.
I can't answer Haruki's questions. Sakura realised in despair. I can't tell him what he wants to know. There's nothing to tell.
Haruki had lost his mind. She knew it now. What in the world was she meant to do?
There was no reasoning with him, nor could she escape his clutches. Especially with her energy rendered useless by Technique Zero. But even that in itself didn't make sense when she thought about it.
Sensui says he has plans for me…but how can I do anything without my powers? They must know I won't willingly help them with this crazy plan.
Either way, Sakura wasn't willing to give up just yet. She couldn't. There was always something. Always something. Every technique had a weakness, a fatal flaw…what was Technique Zero's?
Think, Sakura! Think! You can still use your telekinesis, but it's no good if you can't get out of these restraints.
Maybe it worked like a territory and would switch off when the user was unconscious? Or perhaps there was a time limit? Or maybe…maybe it was wishful thinking. There had to be a reason Haruki was so confident.
Panic gripped Sakura and her breathing sped up. What should I do? I'm completely at his mercy.
Haruki would return any second, and he'd likely have Sensui in tow. Sakura could only imagine the horrors they might have in store for her. And worse, Haruki had promised there would be consequences if she didn't cooperate…
The fear and dizziness was sending her mind into overdrive. Sakura gritted her teeth and told herself to get a grip. The effects from all those sedatives had far from subsided. Losing control emotionally would only leave her more vulnerable.
I can't let him destroy me. I have to survive until the boys get here. Because they will. I know they will!
That hope was the only thing she had left, and Haruki wasn't going to take it from her. Not without a fight. She just needed to figure out how.
Sakura looked over at the door. She would've given anything to see Kurama walk through it instead of Haruki. But he would eventually. It was just a matter of time…
Sakura's eyes widened.
That's it!
Haruki paced back and forth in the darkness with his head in his hands. Despite extensive planning, none of this was going the way he wanted it to.
In his dreams, Haruki had often pictured how it would be when he finally questioned Sakura on her secrets. And in every fantasy, asleep or awake, the girl had always cracked almost immediately. But here she was, blocking his way with a wall of absolute denial...
"It is imperative that you do not fail, my boy," Sensui began. "This act will be critical in ensuring our victory. Do you understand?"
Haruki looked determined. "I understand, sir. What do you require of me?"
"As I said, being close to the epicentre will be most beneficial. Not just for Miss Urameshi, but for our purpose as well," Sensui smiled.
"What do you mean?" Haruki asked curiously.
"I'll explain shortly," Sensui chuckled. "In any case, you must bring the girl to me,"
His minion's eyes widened.
Haruki rested his hands against the wall, followed by his forehead. The sharp rocks grazing his skin helped to tether him to reality. He needed to calm down. Needed to figure out what to do next…
Without warning, the fox demon's voice echoed in Haruki's mind.
"For what you have done, you will pay most dearly. There is nowhere for you to hide from me!"
His fingers gouged through the rock face as he tried to shake it off. They were just words. Nothing but words. The fox had no power over him…not when he had Sakura…
"I should have killed you when I had the chance. I will not make that mistake again,"
Those gold eyes seemed to be burning holes in him. Haruki couldn't bear it any longer and swung his fist. "Damn…that…fox!"
He accented each word with a punch to the wall. What he wouldn't give to deliver the blows into that arrogant creature's face!
You'll get your chance. Haruki reminded himself firmly. For now, you have to pull yourself together. Assess the situation.
Sakura had outright rejected any suggestion that she wasn't human, but that wasn't an issue. He'd been expecting Sakura to be confused and in denial at first. Sensui had told him as much. But this raised a new question.
How do I get her to talk?
His current approach wasn't giving him the results he was after. Something needed to change when he returned, starting with his own demeanour. Sensui had been clear about the plan since the night of the hospital attack…
"When you bring her here, don't be surprised if the girl resists at first," Sensui began. "She doesn't remember, so it's to be expected. You'll have to break down her walls slowly,"
"But how?" Haruki asked. "I wouldn't know where to begin!"
"Of course you do, my boy. You told me so yourself,"
Haruki looked up, confused. Sensui gave him a reassuring smile.
"When Sakyo took you in, you were lost. Alone. You had no agency, nobody you could trust after being abandoned by the old man,"
Sensui saw the boy's fists clench in anger.
"Sakyo was your light of hope, wasn't he?" Sensui continued. "He gave you meaning and purpose again. Don't you think Miss Urameshi would benefit from something similar?"
Haruki turned the cigarette lighter over and over in his hand. "I agree,"
"That's right, Haruki. You can do the same for Sakura. Show her that she can't trust the Spirit Fox, or the Detective. But you can be what she needs. Someone she can rely on, someone she can trust, who will lead her to enlightenment…do you see?"
Haruki swallowed. "And what if I can't?"
"Come now my boy. Do you really think I would entrust you with such a task if I didn't know you were capable?" Sensui smirked.
The boy hesitated. "Yes, but just say…hypothetically, if the Spirit Fox has -"
"You already know what the final solution will be, Haruki. You've known it all along,"
They locked eyes before Haruki whispered what Sensui wanted to hear.
"Chapter Black,"
Sensui nodded. "The last resort. If you follow my instructions, it might not even be necessary,"
A nod from Haruki was all the confirmation Sensui required.
"Of course Mr Sensui. I understand Just tell me what to do,"
Haruki took a breath before straightening up and reaching into his pocket. As his fingers brushed Sakyo's lighter, he felt a wave of soothing calm washing over him.
Remember your purpose. To achieve Mr Sakyo's dream.
He needed to focus. This was just a minor setback. He had to put her at ease, show Sakura that he could be trusted…
The solution came to him in a flash.
Haruki pulled the small box containing Sakura's gift from his pocket and smiled. He knew what to do. The girl's denial would vanish once he showed her what the Spirit Fox had done. And then, this gift would ensure Sakura belonged to him alone.
Once that happened, he probably wouldn't need to resort to Chapter Black.
Not unless she forces my hand.
How long had they been walking through this twisting labyrinth? It felt like forever.
Yusuke silently wished he had a watch, but the cave was so dark it probably wouldn't have been much help. He'd just opened his mouth to ask Mitari for an update when the younger boy spoke up.
"We should be coming across a large cavern. Once we pass that, we'll be about halfway there,"
No sooner had the words left his tongue when Mitari gasped.
"Hold on!"
He darted forward and flung out an arm to stop the group from going any further.
Yusuke blinked. "What's the matter?"
"Do you see that door?" Mitari pointed. "There isn't supposed to be any doorway there!"
And then they all saw what Mitari meant. A heavy, wrought iron door emblazoned with the letter G. It most certainly looked out of place.
"Perhaps we took a wrong turn?" Kurama suggested.
"No, I'm sure of it," Mitari insisted. "We've done everything right. This door is a new addition, and I'd be willing to bet that absolutely nothing good can be lying behind it,"
Kurama frowned. "The Gatekeeper's work?"
"No, Mr. Itsuki has to stay with the portal. I'm not sure who's behind this,"
Yusuke leaned forward, squinting at the door to get a better look. "That's odd. I know I've seen this door somewhere before, I just can't remember where…" he scratched his head. The answer was on the tip of his tongue. "Come on, give me a break! I've seen it recently, so it can't be the school gate…"
Yusuke groaned. This was getting him nowhere. "Ugh, where's Kura when you need her?!"
Not even Hiei was brazen enough to answer that.
"Why can't I figure this one out?" Yusuke snapped in frustration. "Where the hell have I seen this damn door?!"
Just then, a bright voice echoed from behind the barrier.
"Welcome to Goblin City, where your team of seven heroes must clash iron with the evil Goblin King, and restore peace to the town!"
Kurama was visibly stunned. "That's peculiar," he muttered.
"Oh yeah, of course!" Yusuke gasped. "I've seen it a million times; it's the gate to Goblin City!"
How had he not realised sooner? He'd only been playing the previous night.
Hiei raised an eyebrow. "Goblin City?"
"A popular arcade game," Kurama explained.
Yusuke nodded. "Yeah. It's not just any video game. It's the video game!" he said a little too enthusiastically. "You've gotta kill the Goblin King, who's like this master of every single game. But what's so sweet about it is that it combines all the different kinds of games into one. Sports, fighting, trivia, puzzles and so on. The King challenges you to different games at random and you've gotta beat him at four out of seven to free Goblin City. Of course, that doesn't explain why it's come to life in a cave,"
"Amanuma," Mitari said immediately. "He's the Game Master,"
"Welcome to my territory!" a child's voice now spoke from behind the door.
Mitari clenched his teeth. "Oh yeah, that's him alright,"
"The rules of the game are the rules of my territory, and the rules of my territory are the rules of the game," Amanuma's voice said.
Mitari's face now resembled a thundercloud. "If his territory is the game, then we can't even enter that door unless we fit into the game somehow. And unfortunately, we have to pass through there if we want to get to where Sensui is. It's the only way to save Mr Kuwabara and Miss Kura,"
"Does fitting in mean we have to dress up like medieval knights?" Yusuke snipped. "Cause I left my brass shield in my closet,"
"I can't see how many players are out there," Amanuma was talking again. "But your team must have seven heroes to clash iron with me!"
Yusuke growled. "We got enough heroes to beat you four times out of seven!"
"The rules say seven!"
Mitari shook his head. "We have no choice but to follow every guideline. That's the only way we're going to get through that door,"
"Yes, it doesn't seem he's going to be very flexible with the rule that we be a party of seven," Kurama agreed.
"Seven! There must be seven heroes to clash iron -"
"SHUT UP!" Yusuke hollered.
Nobody noticed Kurama's fist clenching in anger before he said "They must have guessed we'd be cautious and enter in a small group at first, and designed this to get us all in here together,"
Once again, Sensui was two steps ahead of them.
Yusuke was already making his move. "I'll just follow your light thingies and run back to get three from the outside," he called.
"It's too dangerous for you to go alone," Kurama said firmly. "We lose precious time, but it's not as if we can move any further,"
There was too much truth in this for Yusuke to ignore, and his shoulders slumped in defeat.
"Crap…"
With a sigh of resignation, he started to lead the way back where they came from.
Kurama took one final look at the door before following Yusuke. He didn't want to leave. Not when his precious flower was still in terrible danger, still in the hands of that deranged apparition. How frightened she must be right now…
Stay strong, my love. We'll be there soon.
Kurama shut his eyes tightly, then forced himself to walk away without looking back.
But he wasn't the only one who'd lingered slightly behind.
Hiei could sense the pain his friend was in, even though the fox demon was doing his utmost to mask it.
Hope isn't lost yet, Kurama. She's still fighting.
Kurama paused, hardly daring to believe it was possible. Hiei, does that mean…?
Wordlessly, Hiei raised his bandana. The Jagan eye on his forehead was glowing again.
Sakura heard the footsteps and knew it was time. She closed her eyes.
You can do this, Sakura. You have to.
It was her only choice.
She kept her head down while Haruki entered. Once again, he crouched down to eye level.
"Honey?"
The nickname made Sakura's skin crawl, but she didn't look up.
"Come on, honey. Look at me,"
Sakura lifted her eyes slightly.
"Good girl," Haruki smiled. "Now, I need you to listen to me,"
Sakura nodded. "Yes, Haruki,"
He pulled her loose hair over one shoulder and gazed deep into her eyes.
"I'm sorry, honey,"
Sakura blinked. "W-what?" Of all the things she expected him to say, that was definitely not on the list.
"I'm sorry I lost my temper," Haruki did look slightly ashamed. "That wasn't fair to you,"
Sakura quickly wiped the stunned look from her face before hanging her head. "I'm sorry too," she said in a small voice. "I haven't appreciated what you've done for me, Haruki. I guess…I guess I just got a bit overwhelmed with how quickly this happened. I shouldn't have snapped at you,"
Haruki's eyes softened. "It's alright honey. Don't worry your pretty head about it,"
His fingers trailed down her arm. "What do you say we start fresh? We still have so much to talk about,"
For the first time, Haruki saw a tiny, hesitant smile appear on Sakura's beautiful face.
"Yes, we do,"

Next chapter: Sakura has chosen a dangerous strategy in order to survive her nightmare. Will it work, or will she finally break beyond repair?
