A.N. We're finally back for the next chapter. Let's not waste time and get started.
Guest 2.0: Here you go! We're far from finished! Thank you for all the encouragement. And as for whether Sakura is human or not, or whether she'll break before the boys arrive...you'll see.
Hina714: I know it's been taking ages, but it's only because I want to make each chapter the highest possible quality. Sakura is in a really dangerous situation, physically and psychologically. It won't take much for him to snap completely.
I'll keep that idea in mind for Book 5. ;)
Wolfs child/Starrat: :D
Ghost of Magic: I think you'll be on the edge of your seat for a while yet, sorry! But it's all leading up to something, promise!
Princesskakashi287: his obsession has gone off the deep end, sadly. If Kurama finds out, which he will, his rage will be apocalyptic.
Hw0134160: the suspense is building up to the climax, I promise!
I'm finally back to full health after two months of dealing with the fallout. I really hope Covid doesn't come for a third round with me.
If I get trolls, I'll just continue to delete them. Nothing will stop me from writing.
The chapter is finally ready, and I hope it fill expectations
Jamareon2005: I can't answer that without astronomical spoilers!
KarinaGuardian/love or pain: thankyou!
Ukitakeitalialover: thankyou so much. I'm ashamed at how much those comments got to me, but it won't happen again. You'll know the answers to your questions soon!
Guest 2.0: my lips are sealed for now :P and thank you, your comment made me cry in the best way!
Chapter 25
Haruki smiled back at his little porcelain doll. At last, she was starting to acquiesce. It seemed the gentle approach had something going for it.
"There it is," he grinned. "Your beautiful smile. I was waiting for that,"
This new deference was a step in the right direction. He just needed to ensure it continued.
Sakura stretched her lips a little wider, hoping the fake smile would reach her eyes.
"I'm glad,"
Haruki traced her cheek with his finger. That smile…it was like sunshine.
So beautiful.
Maybe if he kept this up, she'd feel at ease. Maybe enough to start confiding at least some of her secrets. He could hardly contain his excitement at the thought.
She's calmed down a little. Keep going. Now's the time to give her something else. Show that she can trust you, rely on you…
But first, he had to be sure.
Haruki took a step back and looked at Sakura. The defiance had gone from her eyes and there was no sign of tension in her body. She wasn't gearing up for a fight. Not at all. His little porcelain doll had an air of resignation. One that was laced with terror.
Admittedly, compliance through fear wasn't exactly what he'd been wanting, but that was alright. He could work with it for now.
"You know, I think I actually can trust you to behave," he murmured. "What do you say? Are you going to keep being a good girl?"
She nodded once. "We're starting fresh, aren't we?"
"That's right," Haruki chuckled. "Hold still, honey. This will only take a second,"
Sakura held her breath. Haruki made a small hand movement and the cold metal restraints sprung open. Sakura tried not to sigh with relief. She was free.
"That's better, isn't it?" he said softly.
In lieu of answering, Sakura immediately started rubbing her wrists as gently as possible. After several hours of various restraints, she'd almost forgotten what unrestricted movement felt like.
Haruki's hands immediately went over her tiny one. This presented another perfect opportunity for him.
"Let me see?"
Reluctantly, Sakura nodded. His fingers stroked over her arms with a surprisingly delicate touch. Even so, the sensation of his hands on her body turned Sakura's stomach. She shuddered slightly before stopping herself, but thankfully Haruki was too busy examining her injuries to realise.
"Well, this doesn't look good," Haruki murmured, more to himself than her.
He was correct. Her hands had lost a fair amount of circulation so the pain was minimal, but Sakura still winced at the sight of her wrists. Congealed blood, red welts, deep purple bruising, all were staining her fair skin. A glance downwards showed that her ankles had suffered similar damage.
Haruki shook his head and looked up at her with a disgusting look of sympathy. "Hurts, doesn't it?"
Unable to answer for fear she would cry, Sakura merely shrugged.
"I wish it hadn't come to this," Haruki whispered. He was already caressing her cheek again. "But things will get better when the tunnel is open. I promise,"
Sakura forced herself to maintain eye contact, even though every fibre in her being was screaming at her to punch him in the face and run. But that would be about the worst thing she could do.
Stick to your strategy, Sakura. There's no escape like this. Not until the boys arrive.
She'd probably been down here for hours by now. What in the world was taking them so long?
"His territory will resemble the world of Goblin City," Mitari explained to Yusuke. "I can't say for sure exactly what rules he might set. We probably won't know until we have all seven players,"
Yusuke growled. "Oh great, it'll be like a surprise party mixed with Russian Roulette,"
"I'm sorry, Mr Urameshi. I wish I knew more,"
"I know, I know. It's just that…Kura," Yusuke swallowed the lump in his throat. "She's waiting for us,"
Mitari and Yusuke were so engrossed in their conversation that they didn't notice how far Kurama and Hiei had fallen behind them.
"Hiei…"
Both demons locked eyes as Kurama struggled to form words. He realised what Hiei was trying to tell him.
His Jagan eye must be powerful enough to bypass whatever blockade Haruki has used around Kura. He can see her.
His head whirled with the implications and he took a step closer to the fire demon.
"Hiei…" Kurama's lips moved before he could think.
A brief but firm shake of the head from Hiei caused Kurama to freeze.
Why, Hiei?
That wasn't all. Hiei nodded at Yusuke's back before shaking his head a fraction to each side again and motioning for Kurama to follow.
And then Kurama understood. The relief had caused him to forget for a moment that it wasn't safe to speak aloud.
Sensui and his minions might be watching. That would be disastrous.
Even so, Kurama's heart was pounding at this new development. Hiei had seen Sakura. It changed everything.
Dozens of thoughts and questions were fighting to be asked, desperate to be heard. What did Hiei learn? Was his precious flower relatively safe and unharmed? Where was she being held? How could he get to her?
Conversing aloud was unwise, but there was another way for them to communicate. Telepathy.
Hiei, what did you see?
No answer.
Hiei. Kurama was more forceful this time. What did you see?
A short, emotionless reply floated into his head. I only caught a fleeting glimpse. She's fine.
Kurama's eyes flashed. Even through telepathy, he could see through the façade in a microsecond.
What is the use of lying, Hiei?
Hiei rolled his eyes. You're becoming paranoid. It's rather irritating.
Kurama reached out and caught his friend's shoulder.
This is not the time for games, Hiei! Tell me what you saw!
Hiei's emotionless face only fuelled Kurama's temper. This was beyond absurd. Beyond infuriating. How could Hiei keep him in the dark? He wanted, needed, to know what was happening to Sakura. Not just in order to rescue her, but to share his flower's ordeal the only possible way he could. The thought of her suffering alone was enough to drive him insane.
Shuichi. This is not wise.
Yoko's unexpected rebuke stunned Kurama. He stopped dead.
A smile tugged at Hiei's lips. And that's why you don't need to know. It's what that fool Haruki would want.
"Uh, guys?" Yusuke was giving them a strange look. "Something you want to share with the rest of us?"
Hiei and Kurama glanced at each other. What should they tell him?
Haruki's eyes swept over Sakura. His gaze raked down her face, neck, torso and legs, finally moving back up and falling on her arms.
"Still bleeding. I think we should do something about that. Don't you agree?"
Sakura nodded, briefly. "Yeah, maybe,"
"No, definitely," Haruki corrected. "If we aren't careful, it might get infected. You don't want that, do you honey?"
Sakura swallowed her nausea. "Fair enough,"
He looked pleased. "Can you stand?"
"I think so…" Sakura mumbled. There was only one way to find out. She rose up from the chair and the room immediately began to swim.
Sakura gripped the back of the chair for support. Her legs felt like jelly.
"Honey?!"
Haruki was at her side in a flash, steadying her with an arm around the waist. Sakura suppressed the instinct to pull away, instead forcing a smile.
"It's nothing," she tried to act casual. "Just a bit dizzy is all,"
He frowned. "Are you sure?"
"Yes," Sakura insisted while desperately hoping she sounded more confident than she felt. "Really, I'm fine,"
She could tell from Haruki's expression that he didn't believe her.
"Probably just some effects from the Doctor's drugs," he murmured. "Sensui didn't say how long that would last,"
Sakura didn't dare ask questions.
Haruki tightened his hold on her waist. "Maybe you should lie down," he nodded at the waiting bed. "Come on, I'll get you some more water,"
Sakura felt ice flooding through her. She didn't want to go anywhere near that bed.
"Come on," Haruki repeated. He was starting to tug her in that direction. Sakura was frozen, but she already knew there was no point in objecting. She was going to that bed somehow. Her only choice was how painful it would be.
Swaying off balance, Sakura gave in. "Sure,"
She only managed a single step before she started to fall.
"Woah," Haruki caught her. "That's not what we want,"
So saying, he leaned down and scooped her up.
"I…I can walk…" Sakura protested weakly.
"Shhh," Haruki hushed Sakura by laying a finger to her mouth. "You have to let me take care of you, honey. It's what you deserve,"
She was stiff in his arms. Her face was uncertain.
"What, you think I'm going to drop you?" he laughed. "Never,"
Sakura may have been imagining the double meaning behind his words, but she was far too dazed to resist.
What were those drugs he gave me? I feel so weak…
Under the lingering effects from all the sedatives, Sakura's tense frame went limp against him. Her head fell into the gap between his shoulder and neck. She looked utterly spent.
Perfect.
Haruki gave her a reassuring smile. "It's ok, honey. Just relax. I've got you,"
Sakura opened her weary eyes slightly and gave a feeble nod.
That's right, honey. I'm all you need to rely on now.
Haruki couldn't believe how close she was. One of his arms under her knees, one behind her back, her flushed cheek involuntarily resting against his shoulder…
It's like a dream.
He really had picked the right dress for his little porcelain doll. The fitted bodice meant he could feel every curve of her body through the silk fabric. The flowing skirt hung in the most flattering way around her hips. And if he listened carefully, his demonic aura picked up the sound of her gentle heartbeat.
So beautiful.
Before long, that heart would beat only for him.
Yusuke looked between Hiei and Kurama, clearly wanting answers. "What's going on?"
"Hmph," Hiei scoffed. His face was immediately wiped blank while Kurama carefully averted his gaze.
"Don't give me that crap, Hiei," Yusuke raised his voice slightly, his eyes narrowing in suspicion. "If you've got something to say, then say it,"
Kurama counted six seconds worth of silence before he felt able to speak. In the moments between, he stole another glance at Hiei who gave another slight shake of the head. It was so small, he doubted Yusuke or Mitari even noticed. But even still, the meaning behind Hiei's refusal was confirmation enough for Kurama.
Yusuke cannot know. And for now, neither can I.
"It's nothing," Kurama forced himself to speak calmly. "We have to keep moving,"
"Nothing?" Yusuke repeated with a scowl. "I might not be the brightest bulb in the socket, Fox Boy, but I'm not entirely stupid. What's the deal?"
"We are strategizing, Yusuke," Kurama said firmly. "It didn't seem wise to do so out loud,"
"Well that's cute," Yusuke sniffed. "But maybe the rest of the team should know too?"
Kurama took a breath. "The priority is to enter Game Master's territory," he said quietly. "Discussing fighting strategies here does not serve us,"
Yusuke opened his mouth to argue, only for the fire demon to speak up.
"The longer you stand around asking foolish questions, the longer your sister has to suffer," Hiei almost snapped. "I would think you could understand that, at least,"
Yusuke shut his eyes. As much as he hated to admit it, Hiei was right. Whatever was going on, the two demons had a good reason for keeping him in the dark. He could tell.
I just have to trust them. Whatever that freak is doing to Kura, she'll survive til we get there. She has to!
Yusuke nodded and resumed walking. "It'll be fine," he muttered. "Once we get to her, she'll be totally fine,"
At those words, Hiei's mouth set into a straight, angry line. Kurama's fist tightened.
It sounded like Yusuke was trying to convince himself more than anyone.
Somehow, Sakura managed to keep still and allowed Haruki to carry her over to the bed. He laid her down on top of the satin duvet before taking up a position beside her.
"Now this is more like it," he stroked her hair. "You're being such a good girl,"
Inside, Sakura's heart clenched like a fist. One that she wanted to ram down his throat.
If you think for one second that I'm ok with any of this…then you're more deluded than I thought.
He was staring at her again. Sakura could have sworn she saw his eyes mist over.
"You're so beautiful, Sakura," his voice was heavy with desire. "Everything about you is just perfect,"
Why did he have to keep saying these creepy things? Every word he spoke revolted her.
Unfortunately, Haruki was apparently looking for a reply. "Come on, honey. Learn to take a compliment,"
Sakura choked her disgust back long enough to reply. "Thankyou,"
She had to force the word out, but upon hearing it, he looked happier than ever.
"Not used to hearing the truth? Looks like we'll have to work on that. And we will. But first…"
Haruki's fingers traced down her arm, stopping just shy of her wrist.
"Are you going to keep being a good girl and let me take care of those injuries?"
You're the reason I have these injuries, you psycho. That's what Sakura really wanted to say, but instead she bit her tongue and nodded.
"That's right," he walked his fingers back up her arm. "Dr Kamiya made sure we were well stocked. I should have what I need,"
Sakura expected Haruki to restrain her again in some way, but instead he simply smiled and went to retrieve a box from the corner. When his back was turned, Sakura took advantage of his distraction. For just one split second, her anguish was visible. Terror, anxiety, pain from her wounds…if she held it in any longer, the agony would spill over.
It's ok, Sakura. Just keep playing along for now.
She heaved herself into a seated position on the mattress while Haruki brought the box over. When he opened it, Sakura caught a glimpse of various medical supplies.
Haruki rummaged around to find the items he was looking for. "Here we are,"
He set the bandages aside and held up a bottle of disinfectant. "Now, this might sting a bit…"
"It's fine," Sakura inhaled a shaky breath. "I've had worse,"
Haruki laughed. "Well, I can't argue with that. Give me your arm,"
Reluctantly, Sakura held out her left wrist. She would have much preferred to do it herself, but she knew better than to ask.
"That's a good girl," Haruki took her hand and got to work.
Sakura winced as the liquid hit her skin and started burning.
"Breathe, honey," Haruki barely looked up from what he was doing. "It has to happen,"
Sakura clenched her teeth and waited for the stinging to cease. After a few seconds, it had died down to a tolerable level. Haruki repeated the process on her right hand before setting the bottle aside.
"And now…"
Sakura watched him select a bandage. He went to start wrapping it over her left wrist, but the fabric was rough, and Sakura couldn't prevent a gasp of pain escaping her lips.
"I know it hurts," Haruki looked up with a small but cruel smile. "But it wouldn't have happened if you'd just behaved, honey,"
Sakura looked down so he wouldn't see the hate in her eyes.
"Hey, it's alright," Haruki caught her chin and made her meet his gaze. "Sometimes we have to learn lessons the hard way," he fingered the scar above his eye. "Trust me, I know all about that,"
Sakura's skin crawled under his touch, but she couldn't look away. "I…"
"It's fine," Haruki put a finger to his own mouth as a sign for quiet. "You made a mistake, but I know you're going to keep being a good girl for me now,"
It wasn't a question. It was a warning. Sakura shivered. She couldn't stop herself.
His head snapped up. "Something wrong, honey?"
"I…it's nothing," Sakura said a little too quickly. "I'm just cold,"
"I know," Haruki nodded down at the bandages. "But the sooner this is taken care of, the sooner we can worry about other things,"
Another stroke of her face, and he continued tending to her.
Sakura watched him work and tried not to flinch. But in all honesty, Haruki was being surprisingly gentle with her. It seemed so inconsistent with the violence he'd displayed earlier.
Either way, it confirmed her theory. Feigning submission was the only way he'd cut her a break.
Lucky me.
"One down," he smiled when the bandage was on. "Isn't that better?"
She made herself nod again. "Thanks,"
Haruki started on her right wrist. "Why don't you lie down and rest, honey? You're looking pale,"
As if on cue, another wave of dizziness overwhelmed Sakura, and she fell forward.
"Honey?! Honey, what's wrong?!"
Haruki's voice seemed to be coming from far away. Sakura blinked and realised he'd stopped her from falling off the bed.
"My head…" she mumbled. "It won't…stop spinning…"
Haruki eased her back to the pillows. "It's to be expected with Kamiya's drugs. Apparently the effects come in waves. That's why you need to lie down and let me take care of you,"
Sakura forced her eyes open. "Haruki, I'm kind of thirsty,"
He'd already pulled a bottle of water from the medical kit. "Here, this should help,"
He held the bottle to Sakura's lips while she drank with some reluctance.
"Better?" Haruki asked once a few silent moments had passed.
"I think so," Sakura whispered. The water did seem to be clearing the fog in her mind. She went to sit up again, only for Haruki's hands to push her straight down.
"You don't need to sit up, honey. Save your strength," another horrible smile worked its way across his scarred face. "You're going to need it sooner than you think,"
Sakura's heart skipped a beat. "What is that supposed to mean?"
Haruki chuckled and leaned down uncomfortably close to her face. "You'll see,"
"Haruki, please," Sakura trembled. "Just tell me what Sensui wants. Don't I deserve to know?"
"Not just yet," He shook his head before nodding down at her unbandaged legs. "First I'm going to ensure my little porcelain doll is in pristine condition, just like Mr Sensui said,"
Sakura swallowed hard. "And then what?"
"It's ok, honey. You just rest for now. Everything will make sense soon,"
No, it wouldn't. Nothing about this made sense and Sakura doubted any explanation would help.
What are they going to do to me?
The fear and despair she was trying so hard to control must have shown on her face, because Haruki's brow creased with concern.
"You look so scared,"
Sakura didn't reply. She was too afraid of what he might do if he didn't like the answer.
"Don't you remember what I said before?" Haruki sounded amused. "As long as you behave, nobody will hurt you,"
His mouth was so close she could feel his breath tickling her ear. Sakura turned her head and pressed her lips together so she wouldn't scream. How much more of this would she have to endure?
"You really are so beautiful, Sakura," Haruki whispered seductively. "No sane person would want to destroy such perfection,"
He swept her hair aside. Sakura knew what he was intending to do before it happened. Her eyes shut tightly.
Don't move, Sakura. Don't do anything. Just hang on. You'll be ok!
Even without being restrained, there was no way to stop his lips brushing over her neck.
"I meant what I said, honey. I'm not going to let anything happen to my little porcelain doll,"
Sakura drew her knees into her chest. I'm not yours, Haruki. I never will be, no matter what you do.
Haruki gave her a gentle smile. Such vulnerability was another perfect opportunity to break down her walls.
"Sakura. Look at me,"
His hand was already pulling her face back in his direction. The moment their eyes met, he threaded his fingers through the strands of her hair.
Just like the Spirit Fox does.
"I know this must be a lot for you to take in, honey," Haruki murmured. "And I know you're confused, but it's really going to be ok now. You're safe with me. Just keep being a good girl and everything will be fine,"
Sakura braced herself for another unwanted kiss, but to her astonishment and relief, Haruki pulled back with a rueful laugh.
"Look at me, getting all carried away when I'm supposed to be patching you up,"
She could hear the longing in his voice as he walked his hands down her bandaged arm.
"You just get some rest while I finish up here. Don't worry about anything else,"
Deciding it was safer to at least pretend she was sleeping, Sakura settled into the pillows with a sigh of exhaustion while Haruki started wrapping her shredded ankles.
It felt wrong to be allowing this without a fight, but Sakura knew it was useless. Without her spirit energy, her system full of all those sedatives, Sensui and his men surrounding her…there was nothing she could do but wait for it to be over.
Thinking about her current situation was unbearable. Instead, Sakura allowed her thoughts to turn to the one person she wanted to see above all else.
Kurama.
His beautiful face appeared in her mind's eye. Sakura's heart ached. She wanted him here. To come bursting through the door, destroying the man holding her captive and taking her to safety…
I know you're trying to find me, Kurama. I know you'll do whatever you have to.
The image of him and Yusuke gave her strength and calmed her pounding heart. She thought only of Kurama's voice. His aura. His eyes. The feel of his lips on hers. His comforting touch. His smile. The way he held her in his arms after a nightmare, or just because he wanted to.
"I love you, my precious flower…"
Sakura must have dozed off a little because she opened her exhausted eyes to Haruki pulling a blanket over her.
"Are you feeling more comfortable now, honey?"
The look on her captor's face was horrifying. That sickly smile, as if all this was some sort of twisted game.
Sakura hated him. She hated everything about him. But she still had to keep playing along for her own safety.
"Yes," she whispered. "I feel a little better,"
"That's good," Haruki settled down on the bed beside her. "Can you sit up at all?"
Sakura shook her head. "Just give me a minute. I'm still dizzy,"
"Then you need more water. Now come on,"
Grudgingly, Sakura allowed him to lift her upright. This time, Haruki actually handed her the bottle of water.
"That's it; drink up,"
She did so, while he set about smoothing her dress out.
"The colour looks incredible on you,"
Sakura immediately tipped more water down her throat so she wouldn't have to reply.
"I was torn about which one to pick, you know," he chuckled. "At first I thought I'd get pink for obvious reasons, but then I saw this one and I knew it was meant to be yours," Haruki rubbed the silk skirt between his fingers. "Isn't it perfect?"
"It's pretty," Sakura muttered. Wherever this godforsaken dress came from, she was sure he hadn't acquired it legally.
"It is, especially on you. I thought you'd like the blue better as well. That outfit you wore at the Dark Tournament…" he closed his eyes. "Anyway, I'm glad you like it. And it's a good thing Dr Kamiya got your measurements. I would've hated getting you the wrong size,"
Without stopping to draw breath, Haruki reached over to the nearest flower garland. He pulled one out of the display and handed it to Sakura. She realised it was a tsubaki, a lovely Japanese camellia.
"I wasn't entirely sure what kind of flowers were your favourite, so I made sure there were lots. Do you like them?"
His excited tone was beyond irritating. Sakura stared down at the camellia and tried to block it out.
What's he trying to do? He can't honestly think I'll be won over by some flowers!
"I asked you a question, honey," Haruki frowned. "The polite thing to do would be to answer it,"
Sakura felt her rage start to boil. She had to take a moment before replying.
"I can…appreciate the effort you put into this plan," she said carefully.
He grinned. "It was hard work, especially the bed. But you're more than worth it, honey,"
"But why all this effort for me? I don't understand!"
Instead of answering, Haruki leaned forward so they were almost touching. Sakura pressed her back against the pillows.
"Because it's what you deserve," he whispered. "We're going to be here for a while. I wanted you to be comfortable and happy, just like Mr Sakyo did for me when he took me in,"
She paused. "Did he?"
Haruki nodded. "But it's more than that with you, Sakura. It's…hard to describe what you do to me. Just looking at you…feeling you…I don't think words could ever do it justice,"
Sakura began to tremble again. The lust in his eyes was terrifying her.
"Ever since the Dark Tournament, you were all I could think about. Granted, I had those tapes. I watched them more times than I could count. But it's no substitute for the real thing,"
With a laugh, Haruki started tracing more hearts on Sakura's collarbone, right over the scratches.
"I was patient, though. Mr Sensui promised he'd come through for me. And he did. Because I finally have you all to myself,"
His hand slid to the back of her neck. Sakura flinched.
"I'm not sure I understand," She couldn't stop herself. "I'm nothing special,"
Haruki shook his head with a chuckle. "Selling yourself short as always. No honey, you have something I want. Something only you can give me,"
He laid his forehead on hers. "You have the answers I've been searching for. And whether it's tonight in this cave, or tomorrow after the tunnel opens, I'm going to find out what you know,"
Sakura whimpered. She could feel the rough texture from his burn scar pressing into her brow.
"Shhhh," Haruki silenced her again. "Come on. I don't want you getting upset. It's not good for you,"
He caressed her cheek, staring deep into her eyes. "You seem to be feeling up for it, so I'll ask again. What are you, Sakura Urameshi? What secrets are you hiding?"
An intense fear bubbled inside Sakura's stomach.
"You can tell me, honey," he murmured. "Tell me everything. I'm ready to know,"
Sakura opened her mouth, but no sound would come out. She closed her lips again and shook her head.
"What are you?" Haruki took her face in both hands. "I want to know your secrets. You are not human, so tell me what you truly are,"
"I…I can't," Sakura's voice cracked. "I'm sorry. I just can't,"
Haruki cocked his head. "Why? You think I won't understand?"
She squeezed her eyes shut. There's nothing to tell. I'm not hiding anything.
"Oh, I see," Haruki chuckled, apparently deciding what her silence meant. "You don't trust me. That's it, isn't it?"
"Well…" Sakura hesitated. Going with this assumption could buy her much-needed time, but it could easily result in punishment. "To be honest, I'm finding it a little difficult to trust you, yes,"
She expected another slap or shove, but incredibly, he actually smiled.
"I'm impressed, honey. Honesty is certainly going to be good for both of us,"
Sakura wished Haruki would let go of her face. Having to look at him was making her nauseous.
"It's hard to answer questions when I don't understand the situation," she whispered. "Does that make sense?"
He paused. "I suppose it does,"
"It would…be easier for me...if I knew a bit more about what's actually going on," Sakura lowered her eyes in an attempt to seem more compliant.
"What do you mean?"
"I…I know how you survived the stadium collapse," Sakura spoke slowly, ready to stop talking at the first sign of anger from Haruki. "But after that…"
"Oh, I see what you're getting at. But to be honest, honey, I'm not sure you need to know all that,"
"Please, Haruki? I'm not asking for much. And it would help me answer your questions,"
He tousled her hair, contemplating whether he should tell her anything.
"I probably shouldn't," Haruki said after a moment. "However…" His finger started tracing her lips. "You're being such a good girl right now…maybe you do deserve something,"
A new idea had just occurred to him. One way to break down the walls was to overwhelm his little porcelain doll.
By telling her everything, she'll see that it's pointless in trying to resist what's happening. She'll know those foolish boys have no chance at stopping Sensui, that it's much better if she does what we want without a fuss.
"Yes…if she knows, that's a good thing…"
Sakura noticed Haruki's expression and tone of voice had changed. He seemed to be talking to himself instead of her while making his decision.
"She'll understand why…she'll see there's no option…"
Each passing second seemed like an eternity to Sakura. But at last, Haruki began.
"Toguro was defeated. The stadium had been destroyed. Master Sakyo was dead. Once again, I'd lost everything," he whispered. "Alone in the rubble, the ashes. I had nothing left except unanswered questions, and the mission,"
He turned his gaze upwards. Sakura could see the memories swirling in his eyes.
"I didn't know where to start. I couldn't even move. The only thing on my mind…was you, honey,"
Sakura's heart skipped a beat. That deranged smile had reappeared.
"I wanted to have you with me, to tell me everything I needed to know. But that seemed hopeless. I thought I'd lost you forever,"
Haruki's piercing gaze seemed to go straight through Sakura, but inside her sense of hope strengthened. So far, her strategy seemed to be working.
"And when exactly did Sensui come into the picture?"
"The day after you all left the island," Haruki visibly revelled in the memory. "Mr Sensui appeared while I was on the verge of losing hope. He said our souls were drawn together under divine justice. And he had a lot of questions about the new Spirit Detective. I was more than happy to fill him in, of course,"
So that's how Sensui knew. And having all the footage from the Dark Tournament meant they could train around our fighting styles.
Haruki wasn't done. Not by a long shot.
"In return for my help with the mission, Mr Sensui said he'd make sure I could get my answers from you, honey. He promised you'd be mine,"
Sakura's jaw dropped. "He what?!"
Haruki nodded. "Sensui told me you'd be very useful to us in the final stages of the process. And as long as I allowed him to use your powers when the time came, I could keep you,"
The look of shocked disbelief on Sakura's lovely face encouraged him to continue.
"How could I say no to such an offer? Of course, we needed a lot of preparation. Sensui knew seeing the footage from the Dark Tournament would be invaluable. But with the stadium destroyed, the only way to do so was Spirit World's records. That was my first job,"
"No…don't tell me…"
"That's right. I was easily able to break into Spirit World and get what we needed, including the old man's papers, just in case Genkai decided to tell you anything about their history," Haruki's eyes sparkled maliciously. He seemed thrilled to finally reveal everything. "Not that I cared; throwing those papers in the fire allowed me to reclaim my identity. Wipe the slate clean and fulfil my purpose,"
Haruki stole Master Shinsuke's files. Sensui wanted to throw me off the trail, buy more time…how could I have been so stupid?!
Sensui had always been three steps ahead of them. Every time they'd made a move, he'd already paved the way.
"My powers awakened soon after work on the tunnel began. And I've been training ever since, along with the others. We can easily dispel anything Spirit World may try. There is no force in existence who could stop our cause now. Certainly not the Spirit Detective,"
That last sentence was absolutely sagging with derision, but Sakura couldn't make a sound. Not even to tell him he was wrong.
Tears stung her eyes again. This was insane. She had to be in the middle of a terrible nightmare!
Haruki's heart swelled with joy. She's starting to understand. She'll break soon. I almost have her!
"You can probably figure out the rest," Haruki said while drinking in her reaction. "How I trained, prepared for what Sensui required of me. But my main goal has always been you, honey,"
Sakura shut her eyes. No…no, please…not this…
"I trained. I watched the tapes. I dreamed of how it would be when I finally owned you. I waited for the answers that Mr Sensui had promised I'd have,"
He was so close. His lips were ghosting her forehead.
"It wasn't easy, though. I was impatient. Those months of waiting for you…I thought I'd go crazy. Honestly, I probably would have lost it without Mr Sensui. But the moment I finally laid eyes on you in Mushiyori City, I knew I was right to trust in his plan,"
"It was you!" Sakura whispered with growing horror. "You were the one I fought at the hospital. You were the one who shut off the power!"
Haruki's crazed smile returned with a vengeance, confirming Sakura's worst fears.
"So you do remember. I'm surprised,"
Those brown eyes narrowed by millimetres. "What are you talking about?"
Haruki considered the situation for a moment. He'd been waiting for the ideal moment to reveal what the Spirit Fox had done…but perhaps he could create it himself.
"I just thought…given the circumstances…you wouldn't have any memories of Mushiyori Hospital thanks to him,"
She glared at Haruki. "I remember everything up to the concussion you gave me. After that it's a bit fuzzy…wait, what did you just say?"
Haruki couldn't stop the excitement showing on his face. This couldn't have been more perfect if he tried.
"You really don't know, do you honey?"
"What are you talking about?!" Sakura repeated angrily.
His laugh only infuriated her more. "Well, I could tell you, but I wonder if showing you would be more appropriate. What do you prefer?"
"You're not making any sense," Sakura turned away. "I don't need to listen to this,"
"Oh, I see how it is,"
Sakura could still feel him hovering over her, and then his voice was in her ear.
"You don't trust me…but you trust the Spirit Fox,"
Sakura stayed silent. She had absolutely no words.
"Don't ignore me!" Haruki gripped her shoulders. "Do you actually believe it? You truly think he's worthy of your trust?!"
When she didn't reply, Haruki's anger took over.
"Answer me!"
Sakura gasped. In one swift move she found herself pinned down by Haruki, staring up at his visible rage.
"Haruki, I…"
"Do you trust him?!" Haruki demanded. "Tell me!"
Her chocolate brown eyes were wide with fear, but when she answered her voice was stronger than he expected.
"Of course I do,"
Still holding Sakura down, Haruki glared at her. There was one way to change things. One piece of information he had that would surely persuade her of the truth. To break down those walls.
Overwhelm her with reality. It's the only way.
"So, you trust the Spirit Fox," he breathed. "Well, I wonder how quickly that will change when you see the truth…when you see what he did to you!"
Sakura felt pure dread coursing through her veins. "Wait, Haruki! What are you-?"
His hand came down on her forehead. A sharp pain stabbed through Sakura's mind before everything around her vanished.
*~*~*
Haruki could see it all through the window. In the Urameshi apartment, Genkai and Yusuke were locked in a shouting match. But Keiko had pulled Kurama aside in the hallway.
Thanks to Yusuke's inability to hold his tongue, Sakura had become suspicious. They needed to talk.
"She knows that you might've erased her memories," Keiko looked worried. "Of the hospital. I don't think she knows about…after the tournament,"
Kurama didn't say anything. His face had not changed expression in the slightest. Keiko waited for a response, but it didn't come.
"So, did you?" Keiko pressed after a moment. "Erase her memory?"
The silence alone confirmed it before Kurama closed his eyes with a chuckle.
"Of course I did. And I'd do it again in a heartbeat,"
*~*~*
Haruki's crazed smile was the first sight that greeted Sakura when she emerged from the vision.
"You saw it,"
Sakura lay still, trying to catch her breath. This was happening too fast for her to comprehend, but Haruki didn't seem to care.
"You can't deny it anymore, honey. You heard what he said. And they were all in on it,"
She shook her head. "No…no, I don't believe it. Kurama must have-"
"What was that?" Haruki snapped. "You don't believe it? You saw it with your own eyes!"
"I know him," Sakura insisted weakly. "He wouldn't…he'd never…"
"You're actually defending him?!" Haruki rounded on her. "How can you do that after what you just saw?!"
Sakura turned her head. She couldn't think clearly. "I just…I don't know for sure…"
His fingers tightened around her shoulders. "So that wasn't enough proof for you? In that case…"
Haruki stared down at Sakura, his mind racing. There was something else he could do. A last resort contingency plan suggested by Sensui.
I don't think I have a choice. It's the only way.
"I didn't want to show you this," he breathed. "It's going to hurt, but you need to know. You need to know,"
"Haruki, don't-!"
"Sorry honey. It's for your own good,"
His hand came down on her head once more. The cavern disappeared behind a veil of black. The image of Keiko and Kurama appeared before Sakura.
But something was different. There was a kind of haze covering them. The effect was difficult to describe, but whatever it was, it seemed alive. Malicious.
As the memory played, the pain in her head increased. There was a terrible shriek of anguish in the distance.
Could that be me?
*~*~*
Keiko caught Kurama's shoulder as he went to walk away. "So, will you tell her what you did?"
"No, Keiko," The smug expression on Kurama's face didn't belong to him. "She'll remember only what I want her to. It's for her own good,"
Keiko giggled. "You're probably right,"
"After all," Kurama bared his teeth in a hideous smile. "Who better to decide for her but me, the legendary bandit?"
*~*~*
"He didn't even want to tell you the truth," Haruki shook his head in disgust. "And he says he cares about you. It's disgraceful,"
Sakura couldn't make a sound. She felt like the world was crumbling beneath her. She'd completely forgotten about her plan, her determination to remain calm and stoic.
She understood everything, and her chest felt like it would crush under the weight of realisation.
I was right. Kurama did erase my memories. He must have done it when I passed out.
It was just as she'd suspected. Kurama had used his plants to alter her memories of the hospital. And it seemed everybody except Sakura herself had known about it.
That wasn't all. Judging by Keiko's words, he also removed some horrible memories associated with the Dark Tournament.
Something even worse than my last match? Or seeing my teacher killed? What could it possibly be?
Sakura didn't know, but the incident at Mushiyori Hospital was more recent, and she definitely knew her recollection of that day was hazy after hitting her head.
There was only one explanation as to why Kurama would resort to this. Something had happened in that basement, and he'd decided it was too much. So he'd taken matters into his own hands. He'd made the choice for her.
At least I know now.
Perhaps, in a way, she'd always known.
Haruki sensed it. The internal tremor of her heart. The fissures had already begun spreading through the rest of her soul. He was about to win. About to have Sakura throw all her hopes on him and reveal her secrets…
Keep going. You have to do it. You're almost there.
"It's alright, honey," He released his grip on Sakura and took her into his arms like a child. "I wish you didn't have to find out this way, but it's fine now. I promise,"
Sakura barely heard him. She couldn't even breathe properly while her tears fell.
"I would never, ever do that to you," Haruki whispered. "Even if I had the ability. It's not right,"
She closed her eyes. Something was wrong with this, but it was hard to concentrate with Haruki's voice invading her ears.
Why would Kurama do such a thing to me?
If only she had talked to Kurama when she had the chance last night. She would've known the full story!
Would you? A nasty voice in her head asked. If he's erasing your memory without asking, how do you know he'd tell you the truth? He's a thief after all!
Panic. Anxiety. Fear. Confusion. All these and more began to engulf Sakura from head to toe.
They'd all known. Yusuke, Genkai, Botan, Kuwabara…everyone had known. Except her.
How could she ever trust anyone again?
"The lies, the deceit. You don't need any of that abuse," Haruki gently stroked up and down her back.
Hold on. A stronger voice at the back of her mind said. Think about it, Sakura. There has to be more to the story than what you've just seen.
Sakura shook her spinning head to clear it before Haruki pulled her closer into his chest. The effect was minimal, but she was determined to figure this out, at least long enough to stop this from sending her over the edge.
Think, Sakura. Think. You have to!
She may have suspected this revelation, but who was delivering it? Haruki, who'd snatched her from her bedroom.
Something isn't right. I know it. That didn't sound like Kurama or Keiko at all.
Was that memory real? Assuming it was, how had Haruki even heard that conversation, let alone the context? It seemed a little too convenient that he'd just happened to be there in time to see Kurama talking about something so sensitive.
Kurama always asks my permission for everything. He never assumes.
Hadn't he asked her about the Dream Flower when they returned home from Hanging Neck Island?
"Whatever you choose, love. I'll stand by you. We all will,"
Yes, now she remembered his words. And she remembered the sincere look on his face as he'd said them.
He hadn't been lying. Sakura knew it. He really did want it to be her choice alone. The Kurama she'd seen in that memory wasn't the one she knew.
Haruki had twisted it somehow.
"No…" Sakura was barely audible. "No, this can't be right. I don't believe it,"
Haruki's jaw clenched. She wasn't reacting the right way. This was supposed to win her over…remove any doubt that the Spirit Fox was her enemy.
"What makes you say that?" It was difficult to keep the anger out of his words.
"I know him," Sakura's eyes were blank. She was talking to herself, not him. "Kurama wouldn't…that's not how he talks. Or how he acts. There's another explanation. I know it,"
Now that she thought about it, the fragmented visions Haruki had forced on her had been just that. Fragments. Something was missing from the exchange between Keiko and Kurama. From the beginning, middle or end. Sakura didn't know what exactly, but something vital had been deliberately hidden from her.
Kurama loves me. I know he loves me. He'd never do something like that…not unless he felt it was the only option.
She knew Kurama, the demon in human form. Kurama, who was gentle, kind, compassionate, and intelligent. The one who had risked everything in the Dark Tournament time and time again. The one who had come after her when she'd been lost in the forest. Who'd saved her from the clutches of the tokage demons, who'd single handedly destroyed that evil woman in the finals. Kurama, who always held her after a moment of panic and seemed to love her more each time their eyes met. He who had never let her down.
Even during that horrifying moment when she'd screamed to him before being taken, she'd heard his reply.
"Kura! I'm coming!"
Yes, he was coming. Even if it was taking longer than expected. He would come for her.
Who was Haruki, the one delivering this message? What did she know about him?
Haruki, the sole survivor of her slain teacher's class. Loyal bodyguard to the crime lord Sakyo even after death. The demon who had stalked, threatened and intimidated her throughout the Dark Tournament. Not just her, but those she cared about. The demon who had broken her collarbone and dragged her before Sakyo. And even now, long since the stadium collapsed, he continued to show loyalty to Sakyo. He'd teamed up with Sensui, attempting to eliminate humanity. All of it fuelled by this deranged obsession with her.
Haruki had attacked her in the hospital basement. He'd kidnapped her from her own home, trapping her in this cave for Sensui's use and to treat her as a living doll.
He'd gone to insane lengths to take her for himself, blindly convinced she was hiding some tantalising secret. And Sensui had encouraged him every step of the way.
I can deal with what Kurama did after I get out of this mess. I won't let Haruki manipulate my emotions. No way.
"Haruki…" Sakura began.
He moved her to face him. "You understand now, don't you honey?"
Sakura blinked tears away and took a deep breath to calm herself. "How did you see that conversation?"
His eyes softened. "Last night. After you fought that traitor Mitari,"
Sakura's heart clenched. No…no, he didn't…!
"You remember my Shadow Form from the hospital?" He laughed briefly. "Well, maybe not. Anyway, I was able to observe the entire fight, then follow you and Kuwabara back to your apartment,"
Sakura was speechless, but Haruki sighed wistfully.
"You were right there in your bed. The sight of you with the Spirit Fox...it was maddening. I wanted to bring you back here last night after you fell asleep, but Mr Sensui was adamant about keeping to schedule,"
He was in my room…he watched me sleep…
Sakura's head whirled again, and for once she didn't think it had anything to do with the drugs.
Haruki seemed to shake off the disappointment. "I suppose it doesn't matter now. The important thing is that you're with me, and that's how it's going to be from now on,"
Sakura buried her face in her hands. This can't be real. I'm not hearing this.
His arms immediately went around her, but they provided no comfort.
"Oh honey, you don't need to cry anymore. It's going to be alright,"
Haruki lifted Sakura's head and cupped her face in both hands. His face was sympathetic, but Sakura wasn't fooled. He was just trying to soften her up.
"I know it's hard to accept, but you need to know the truth," he whispered. "As soon as I saw that conversation, I knew bringing you here was the best thing for you,"
She stared at him, and he took her silence as permission to continue.
"Deep down, you know it as well. I saw how you cried for me last night. How you wished you'd known who I was at the tournament. You've been thinking about me this whole time as well,"
Haruki saw her eyes welling up again, and smiled calmly. He was so blinded by a sense of victory that he brushed aside any notion of the true meaning behind her tears.
"Everything will be fine now, Sakura. Don't you see? You deserve so much better than the Spirit Fox,"
Sakura pulled away and looked down. She had to hold on. She had to get a grip…
"It's been a very difficult day for you," Haruki combed through her hair. "But I think I know something that will make you feel better,"
She couldn't help looking up at that comment.
"I…I got you this," Haruki pulled a small box from his pocket. "To show you I'm serious,"
The box opened. Sakura gasped when she saw what he was presenting to her.
I don't believe it.
Nestled in velvet was a sparkling ring. In the dim candlelight, Sakura saw it was a princess cut sapphire surrounded by a halo of tiny diamonds.
"What do you think?" Haruki's mouth twisted into another grin. "It might be a little big, but we can fix that,"
She slowly shifted her gaze to his face. Her jaw trembled.
"Honey, I know this is a lot for you to comprehend all at once. But I'm right here. I'm going to take care of you," Haruki whispered. "And I promise I'm going to be different from the Spirit Fox. I'm going to treat you right. All you have to do is give me what I want,"
When she still didn't answer, Haruki slipped his hand under her chin.
"I would never, ever do anything to hurt you, Sakura," he continued. "You deserve the best, and that's what I'm going to be. Because I know you. We're connected in so many ways,"
No response.
"I'll make you happy. I'll be better for you than the Spirit Fox ever could be. Once you've helped Sensui complete the mission, of course,"
Sakura's eyes slipped shut. Her face was paler than ever.
"Come on, what do you think of your present? Don't you want to try it on?"
Sakura opened her eyes to see his sickening smile while he reached for her, and the whole world seemed to slow down.
Screw this.
Sakura's body moved before her mind did. Seemingly in a trance, she watched herself slap Haruki's face with all her strength.
"How dare you?!" she hissed. "How dare you try to speak like you know Kurama, or me?! You don't have the first clue!"
Haruki didn't reply immediately; he simply touched the place where her blow had landed.
"Kurama loves me," Sakura seemed to be choking with fury. She swung her hand back for a second hit. "He loves me. He would never…never-!"
Haruki caught her bandaged wrist in a bone-crushing grip. For a moment, he stared at her without speaking.
"So, you're still in denial after seeing the truth?" he murmured. "I see how it is,"
Sakura's arm was screaming in protest, but her anger far outweighed the pain.
"The only one in denial is you," Though her voice shook, she powered on. "Whatever you're thinking, it's never going to happen. Do you hear me? NEVER!"
Silence.
Sakura could only hear her pounding heart while waiting for a response, whatever it may be.
"Never, you say?"
Her captor's face was partially obscured by the shadows, but his voice was deadly calm.
"Sounds like the Spirit Fox really did a number on you. The gentle approach isn't going to be enough,"
Haruki leaned forward. His eyes were filled with darkness.
"So be it, honey,"
The Jagan's light faded, and Hiei saw the dimly lit passage once again. Around him, six other figures now made their way towards Game Master's territory.
The unstable energy coming from the tunnel was proving a formidable challenge for his Jagan eye, but Hiei had seen enough.
Hold on, Kura. We're coming!
Even in his mind, the thought made Hiei pause.
What was the matter with him? Why did he feel an overwhelming urge to ensure Haruki suffered for his actions? Was it because of how Sakura had helped Yukina?
A voice inside whispered that the answer was no. It was more than that…
From the corner of his eye, Kurama noticed Hiei's fist clench.
His own heart did the same.
"So how much further?" Yana piped up.
"From this point we're about halfway to where Amanuma is," Mitari said. "I just hope we don't encounter any more problems,"
Yusuke scowled. "If that whack job shows up again…"
The rest of Yusuke's rant was ignored by Hiei and Kurama. The two of them were lost in their own minds.
Haruki…you are going to regret everything.
Kurama kept his eyes forward while his mind was considering every single scenario that might be awaiting them in Goblin City, and beyond that.
No matter what they encountered, he would obliterate them. And frankly, devising potential strategies was the only way he could keep from imagining the terror his precious flower was experiencing…
Nothing will stop me, my love. Haruki will pay.
Kurama stole another glance at Hiei. Something had changed.
Hiei ground his teeth slightly in frustration.
This makes no sense!
Why was he so concerned? He'd long since buried those ridiculous feelings for that girl, making the choice to let go of whatever it was back at the Dark Tournament…
Hiei?
The sound of his name snapped Hiei back to reality. He slowed his pace so Kurama could catch up.
What is it Hiei? Has the situation deteriorated?
Kurama trusted Hiei's judgement to keep whatever he could see from the rest of them. However, seeing Hiei's physical reactions, subtle as they were, gripped him with fear.
He had to know. If Sakura had been harmed or anything of the sort…he had to know.
Hiei hesitated, then gave him a sideways look. We have to hurry.
Kurama gave a brief nod, so tiny nobody would have a hope of noticing.
Did something happen to Kura? Did he…hurt her?
There was a moment of silence before the reply.
He's not giving up, but neither is she.
Kazuya looked around the living room door. Just as he suspected. Shiori had fallen asleep with one hand on the telephone. Her face was still lined with worry.
"Shiori?"
No response, but that was hardly surprising. She hadn't moved so much as a muscle since taking up her vigil several hours ago.
Kazuya knelt beside the couch. "Shiori?"
Her eyes fluttered. "…what is it, Kazuya? Did Shuichi call? Is there news?!"
"I'm sorry dear, but no,"
Shiori closed her eyes before looking at the clock. 9:30pm. Shuichi wasn't home, and Sakura was still missing…
"I take it Shuichi isn't coming home tonight?" Kazuya nodded at the phone.
"No, he said the police asked him to stay. There's a strong possibility that the offenders will use Sakura's phone to contact him with any demands," Shiori explained with a voice full of tears. "I'll have to call the school as well; there's no way he'll be attending until she's back safely," She sighed deeply. "Besides, Yusuke is still in the hospital. Who knows where his mother could be…"
Kazuya shook his head. It was a dreadful situation in every way. "Shiori, it's getting late. Why don't you go to bed?"
"I can't," she said immediately. "Not until we know something,"
"I understand," Kazuya smiled gently. "Just a moment,"
He fetched a quilt from the linen closet and laid it over her.
"Let me know if Shuichi calls, alright? I'll be in the office working on that report,"
"I will, but…" Shiori pressed a hand to her eyes. "I don't understand why this happened!"
Kazuya sat down on the couch and wrapped his arms around Shiori.
"She's a child, Kazuya. A fourteen year old child. Why would anyone want to harm Sakura?!"
Shiori's distress overwhelmed her. She couldn't continue asking the many unanswered questions.
What was this all about? Why hadn't the perpetrators made any contact? Why hadn't the police found Sakura yet? Why did her beloved son have to suffer like this?
"It'll be alright, Shiori," Kazuya murmured while stroking her hair. "I'm sure Sakura will be found soon,"
Shiori looked at the phone again, wishing it would ring with good news. She couldn't bear thinking about the anguish her son was feeling. She'd heard it when he'd called earlier.
"I'm sorry mother, but I don't know when I'll be home again," Shuichi's voice was tight. "Yusuke hasn't regained consciousness for one. The police may need my assistance, and…."
He paused. "I can't come home. Not until she's safe,"
Until then, all Shiori could do was keep praying for the best outcome.
Sakura…you have to come back safely. For all of us.
A.N. Sakura's snap decision to not ask Kurama if he'd tampered with her memories has come back to bite her. It's going to make for a very awkward conversation in the future...
I appreciate you all sticking with me. Next chapter, we're going to get back to the canon events of Goblin City etc.
I know it's been kind of slow since they entered the cave, but I wanted to emphasise exactly how long the cave sequence goes for in the manga and anime. When you think about it, they're down there for well over twelve hours. With what's happened, and what's coming, this was the only way to make it work.
Please make sure you leave a review. I'll have Chapter 26 up as soon as it's ready.
Next chapter: The boys face off against Amanuma in Goblin City, where everything is at stake...
