A.N. Two solid months of daily writing has brought us to this point, and is hands down the longest chapter yet. Hang on tight. The answers you've been waiting for have arrived with this two-part installment.

I must thank my friends NightWolfRUNNER and Arielle1406 for all the support and help they gave me for this chapter. I was VERY needy and worried about it, and it wouldn't have turned out half as well without them.

Ghost of Magic: Yes, I've made a few changes. Just last week I finally left a very toxic work environment so now I'll actually have time to write again. It was ridiculous; I wasn't arriving home until well after 8pm most nights which meant I could only write in small chunks. That's all done now.

Wolfs child: I didn't think it would take this long, but we're here now and I hope you enjoy!

Hina714: This chapter will explain the plan in detail, along with a number of other things. Sakura definitely has an impact on everyone she comes in contact with. Enjoy!

hw0134160: I know what you mean. I'm sorry, but this is how it had to happen. We only have one more chapter until the climax, so I promise the payoff is close! There aren't many words to describe Haruki, but you're about to discover exactly why he turned out this way. See you in the next chapter!

B Martinez: Sorry, I don't like to publish chapters until I'm 100% satisfied. The next one won't be far off.

ukitakeitalialover041757: They really do need to get their asses there! Sensui's plans are going to be fully eplained in this two-part installment.

Arielle1406: All caught up in time for the big reveal! So glad to have you along for the ride, friend!

torbenefb95: If you think Sakura is a boring character, then why are you here? Nobody's forcing you to read it. As for 'always needing to be saved', it's only happened twice in three long books, and I think I've done a reasonable job explaining why it's happened each time.

NightWolfRUNNER: You beautiful soul. I love you so very very much!

princesskakashi287: Thankyou, so so much. Your comment came at the right moment, and I honestly cried because I was so grateful. I was so terribly stressed over this chapter, and the story in general. I'm not going to do that anymore.

Without further delay, let's dive in!

Chapter 27

Finally, the truth. Or was it?

Sakura looked at the ground and pondered the answers apparently laid out for her. Something about it didn't seem right.

There's more going on here. I don't know what exactly, but he's holding it back.

Sensui watched his dark-haired prisoner struggle to form words with a gleam of triumph in his eyes.

"Surprised, Miss Urameshi? I don't blame you. It's to be expected. All this time, you've been wondering what we needed you for, if not as bait. Did you think it would be more complicated?"

Sakura ran a hand through her hair. She had to get to the bottom of this, even if it resulted in punishment.

"I…I don't understand," she mumbled. "How is that meant to work? You said it yourself, there's already a crowd of C-class demons waiting at the entrance. Sounds like they have things under control,"

"That's where you'll find you're wrong, Miss Urameshi," Sensui grinned. "See, while the lower class demons are well prepared to enter, the best destroyers are located far further in. They need to be informed of the tunnel, and to do so, we need a mouthpiece. That would be you,"

Haruki laughed quietly at Sakura's horrified expression. "Do you see now, honey? Once the barrier is cut, you'll be like a megaphone, inviting them all to start the fun,"

"So you're saying that you want me to call the S-class demons and declare open season on humans?" Sakura stammered, trying to make sense of it. "That's insane!"

"Far from it, Sakura," Sensui's smile widened. "Once your abilities were revealed to me, I knew everything was falling into place. The universe was aligning the puzzle pieces. It wants me to correct the wrongdoings,"

Sakura backed up against the wall. "You're crazy," she whispered. "There's no way I'll ever help you destroy earth,"

"You won't have a choice," Sensui smirked. "It's what has to happen,"

"No," Sakura said fiercely. "I won't do it. And besides, even if I wanted to, my powers aren't nearly strong enough to reach all through the Demon World. I don't have that kind of range!"

Haruki and Sensui exchanged a hideous grin.

"You mean you haven't told her?" Sensui chuckled

Haruki shook his head. "You should have that honour Mr Sensui,"

"Very gracious of you, my boy," Sensui turned back to his captive. "You're not entirely wrong, Sakura. Powerful as you are, the range of your abilities is still somewhat lacking for our needs. I knew from the start that you would require…assistance. Fortunately we have someone who can do just that. Itsuki. You might know him as Gatekeeper,"

Itsuki…

Sakura recognised the name from Koenma's explanation. Sensui's teal-haired partner from his days as a Spirit Detective. In light of what the memory had revealed to her and the subsequent attack, she'd barely given Itsuki a second thought.

"Him?" Sakura asked in disbelief. "What's he got to do with anything?"

"Perhaps if you settle down and listen, you might find out," Sensui sighed. "Itsuki is a powerful apparition with many abilities, but telepathy is not one of them. It is a rather exceptional gift, only possessed by a select few in all planes of existence. Not only that, but having natural telepower coupled with tutelage from your late Master is virtually unheard of. You are indeed a rare and delicate flower,"

Sakura shot an acid-filled look at him. Sensui had no right to speak her master's name. "My master didn't teach me -!"

"There's a lot he didn't teach you, honey," Haruki snapped. "If you only knew…"

"Ghost!" Sensui said sternly. "Don't interrupt,"

Haruki looked down at his feet and muttered something Sakura couldn't understand.

"You'll have the floor again soon enough. Just be patient," Sensui told him before looking back at Sakura. "What were you saying, Miss Urameshi?"

This unexpected politeness startled Sakura into a moment of silence.

"I…Even if I wanted to, I couldn't," she said at last. "My master never taught me how to destroy, only protect,"

"Of course," Sensui agreed. "However, you don't realise what lies beneath. You have extraordinary control over your own power. Forming bonds, being able to open and close the connection at will…the expansion possibilities are endless with more training. But since time is of the essence, that's where Itsuki comes in,"

"No…no way!"

Sensui grinned at her pale face. "You understand what I'm saying, don't you? After Itsuki has finished with the tunnel, he'll be able to start the necessary process on your mind. You'll simply be the temporary vessel for his power,"

"Not a chance," Sakura snapped. "I won't do it, no matter what you or anyone else tries,"

Haruki snorted. "I think you'll find Itsuki is very capable, honey. Even you won't be able to resist. But don't worry," he grinned. "He'll do all the work. You won't feel a thing,"

Sakura buried her face in her knees. She didn't want to hear anymore of this.

Haruki's face lit up, as did Sensui's. They were seeing the tell-tale signs of someone who was beginning to crack.

"Something so foolish as a limit can't be tolerated in this mission, Sakura," Sensui continued. "Itsuki has already confirmed that your mind is more than enough for him to work with. It's simply a matter of timing now,"

She shook her head without looking at them. "Forget it. You can't make me. I won't be part of this,"

Haruki started giggling. All the worry and anger he'd felt before seemed to evaporate in the face of Sensui's intervention.

He's going to get her to break. Before long, she'll tell me everything.

Upon hearing his minion's joy, Sensui gave a small nod in the boy's direction.

The meaning was clear. Make your move.

Haruki knelt in front of where Sakura was cowering. "I told you before, honey. That tunnel is opening no matter what. But there's no need to get upset. Everything will be fine. Itsuki just needs to use your mind for a little while. Then you'll be back to yourself again, I promise,"

No response. Undeterred, Haruki placed his hand on her head.

"Can't you see it, Sakura?" he murmured. "You can't stop this. Nobody can. It'll be so much easier on everyone if you stop fighting and just accept what has to happen. We're going to start again in Demon World, just you and me. It'll be perfect,"

Sakura shook him off, though she remained silent

"You're awfully quiet, Sakura," Sensui sneered. "Seems that sharp tongue of yours has been silenced. Could it be that you're a little confused, perhaps?

Sakura glanced up. "Confused? Try disgusted, you maniac!"

Haruki scowled, but Sensui laughed softly.

"It stands to reason," he simpered. "After all, there's still so much you don't know,"

"You're right," Sakura spat with contempt. "I don't know what's wrong with you,"

Sensui raised a brow. "You misunderstand, Sakura. This mission isn't about me. It's about correcting the wrongdoings of the world,"

To his surprise, Sakura gave a weak laugh. "Correct the wrongdoings?" she repeated. "You can start by looking in the mirror,"

Sensui frowned. "I'm in no mood for your childish sarcasm. It's time you woke up and saw the truth about humanity,"

"Wake up?" Her brown eyes rolled. "That might be tricky, considering all the drugs you've given me,"

With a sigh, Sensui glanced at Haruki. "Ghost, you're on standby,"

"Of course," Haruki glared at Sakura in warning. "You might want to be careful, honey. We don't have time to mess around anymore,"

She scoffed. "Whatever. You of all people should know I'm not one to take things lying down. I can see exactly what's going on here. You're trying to mess with my head and it won't work,"

"Oh, my dear Miss Urameshi," Sensui chuckled. "You've got this all wrong. I didn't bring you here to harm you. I brought you here because I was so deeply impressed,"

Sakura's mouth fell open in shock. "Wh-what?"

"Despite being so young, you're quite astounding," Sensui went on. "You have training and abilities most can only dream of, and you've proven yourself to be a very capable fighter. Surviving against so many powerful demons, winning the Dark Tournament…only a fool would dismiss such a litany of achievements. Truly, you've earned my respect,"

Sakura wanted to retort a sarcastic remark about how kidnapping and physical abuse wasn't her idea of respect, but she bit her tongue and looked down.

"Judging by your reaction, I'm guessing you don't believe me," Sensui smiled. "But regardless, it's true,"

He leaned over her in a show of dominance. "Ghost may have commandeered the tape, but I saw those hard won battles,"

"Save your breath," she snapped. "Flattery isn't going to work,"

"Hardly, Sakura. It's the truth. You didn't lose a single match. The only other member of your team to do so was Hiei,"

Sakura swallowed hard. "Why do you care?"

"It's remarkable. Such a delicate flower surviving every hardship," Sensui said. "You faced more odds than a young girl ever should in that tournament, yet came out on top every single time. Particularly in your last match,"

She glared at him, but the anger didn't quite conceal the fear in her eyes.

Sensui smirked and continued. "It must have been difficult for you, having your worst memories exposed to that stadium full of demons,"

Sakura looked away, presumably to hide the emotion welling up again.

"But despite the horrors, the way you were kicked to the curb time and time again, you still won. And all by yourself too,"

Sensui saw the girl tense up, and knew his words were striking at her heart.

"You know it too, don't you Sakura?" He murmured. "It wasn't a group effort. You alone pulled yourself out of that situation while the rest of your supposed team stood by and did nothing,"

Sakura paused. Of course the boys hadn't physically intervened in her match against that awful woman, but how could they possibly have done so?

Don't listen to them, Sakura. They're trying to manipulate you. It was a wildcard round. Any attack on the cage or that woman would have hurt you. The boys couldn't do anything. But they were there. You weren't alone.

What did Sensui know? Or Haruki?

As if on cue, Haruki chose that moment to speak. "What use do you have for them, honey? They didn't end that fight; you did it. And they haven't got a chance in hell now. You don't need them to control you. You don't need them for anything,"

Sakura closed her eyes tightly. Kurama…Yusuke…my friends…they're the reason I'm able to keep fighting. And they're why I can't give up now.

"I must be frank, Sakura," Sensui was talking again. "As soon as I saw those memories, I knew what had to happen. We needed you. We needed your abilities to complete the mission,"

Another firm shake of her head. "I won't let anyone use me,"

"Use you?" Sensui blinked. "Ghost, I don't think our guest is understanding us,"

"I agree, Mr Sensui. Perhaps we should…spell it out?"

Sakura didn't see Sensui's silent command, but she suddenly felt Haruki's strong hands pulling her upright.

Instinctively, she recoiled. "No, don't touch me-!"

Haruki ignored Sakura. He seized her wrist and started dragging her across the den.

"Let me GO!" Sakura cried out.

"Quiet!" Haruki whirled around with a glare before throwing Sakura onto the bed again. "Just sit down and shut up," he growled.

Sensui looked thoroughly entertained. "You might consider this your only warning, Miss Urameshi. I don't want to resort to violence, but I will if necessary. Do you understand?"

Sakura trembled, but otherwise didn't respond.

"Do you understand?" Sensui repeated. "Let's not make this situation any more difficult than it has to be,"

She paused, evidently debating, but at last she nodded reluctantly.

"That's better," Haruki took hold of her face. "I don't like getting rough with you honey, but you're not giving me any other option. Got it? You behave, you don't get hurt,"

Another feeble nod.

"That's a good girl," Haruki ran his fingers through Sakura's hair in an apparent attempt to calm her. "Now listen closely. Everything will make sense if you do,"

An icy atmosphere hung over the den following this . Sensui grinned down at the young girl who trembled before him.

"Now, Sakura," he murmured. "There's so much to discuss. I hardly know where to start,"

"Here's an idea," Sakura shot back. "How about the truth?"

Sensui's smile flickered with annoyance. "Ghost?"

He almost didn't need to ask. Haruki had already yanked Sakura back around to face him.

"Don't test our patience, honey," he warned. "If Sensui talks to you, then you listen,"

She shuddered before slowly nodding once more.

"Thank you, Ghost," Sensui's bright blue eyes sparkled; now he had complete control.

"As I was saying, Sakura. I've been observing you for some time now. And not just on the tapes. Your experiences in Mushiyori City and against Mitari provided valuable insight and confirmed to me what I already knew. You're quite exceptional. Which is why you're going to help us,"

She stared at him, unflinching. Sensui folded his arms and dropped his voice.

"Consider this for a moment, Miss Urameshi. In the grand scheme of things, what are you? A fourteen year old girl still in middle school. A mere drop in the ocean. Frankly, you're just part of the crowd. Isn't that right?"

Sakura shrugged. "I suppose so,"

"Most people haven't thought much of you throughout your short time on earth," Sensui continued. "You don't need to confirm that; I saw your memories on film. Your whole life, you were an outcast. Neglected by a mother who resented you. Rejected by your peers, loathed by your teachers. Yusuke and Keiko were all you had,"

Sakura's stony expression slipped for just a moment before she composed herself.

"What's your point?"

"Precisely what I've been saying, Sakura. You've led such a troubled and lonely existence. That is, until Yusuke's accident. Everything changed for you. At last, you had a purpose. You were fighting for a cause you believed in. Protecting the universe as a whole,"

Sensui closed his eyes. "Though based on a lie, I know how intoxicating it is. The sense of righteousness that comes with being a pawn for Spirit World. But that wasn't all you gained, was it?"

"No," Sakura whispered. "Don't,"

"Your team," Sensui raised his voice enough to drown her out. "Your friends, who you've come to see as family. Though in the case of the Spirit Fox, I'd say it goes much further than that,"

Kurama.

Sakura's heart clenched. Haruki growled quietly.

"Ghost!" Sensui silenced him with a look. "Enough,"

Haruki turned away, and Sensui refocused his attention on Sakura.

"Despite what you believe you gained through Yusuke's role as Spirit Detective, it's caused you more suffering than ever before. Spirit World may have recruited Yusuke, but they threw you into the deep end. You know it as well as I do. We saw your memories,"

Sakura's breath seemed to catch in her throat. The sound made Haruki chuckle quietly. Sensui smirked at him before continuing his monologue.

"What you experienced as a child was enough to scar anybody. But it almost pales in comparison to everything Spirit World's negligence put you through. First it was Hiei. Then Rando. The Saint Beasts. And need we forget, the tokage demons…?"

He enunciated the last part in order to fully savour Sakura's reaction. The little colour remaining in her face drained away, and she hastily interrupted.

"Let me get this straight," Sakura began. "You think you know everything about me, because that…woman…showed you my worst memories?"

Her voice was shaky. Sensui and Haruki shared a knowing look.

"That woman? Interesting choice of words," Sensui chuckled. "You don't like saying her name, do you?"

"That's none of your business!" Sakura hissed. Her cheeks burned with shame.

"Perhaps not," Sensui agreed. "In any case, thanks to Akumu I've seen enough, as did every spectator in the stadium that day," He shook his head in mock sorrow. "Yet still, your friends seem blind to your potential,"

Sakura scowled. "Don't even think about trying that BS on me!"

"Come now, Sakura. You know it as well as anyone else. They don't see you as capable of taking care of yourself. Certainly not the Spirit Detective. You might say you're nothing but a little porcelain doll to them. A fragile ornament to be placed behind glass. Shielded from the world, collecting dust every passing minute,"

Sensui crouched slightly to be at Sakura's eye level. From the look on her face, he knew she was hanging onto every word.

"Tell me Sakura, have you ever seen a ceramic display? A relative's treasured collection of antique china, perhaps?" Sensui didn't even blink while he stared at her. "There's always one in every family. Their prized china, strictly kept behind glass and used only on the most special of occasions. Such a waste. Day after day, it sits there. Anybody with eyes can admire it, but in all honesty, what's the point?"

He grinned. "Something with a purpose should utilise their gift as often as possible. It's not unreasonable,"

Sakura winced. She could sense where this monologue was going.

"You see what I'm getting at, don't you?" Sensui whispered maliciously. "To the Spirit Detective, to the rest of your team, you don't matter. They don't consider you to be on the same level as them. Especially not Yusuke. He tries to convince you that this is from a place of love and protection, but that couldn't be further from the truth,"

Sensui's eyes looked almost black in the dim light.

"Yusuke resents your weak minded and naive side. They all do. And you know this. It's what you've long suspected. Your friends would much prefer you stay behind and stop dragging them all down with your weakness, your fears,"

"That's not true," Sakura insisted. "The only reason we've all survived everything is by relying on each other. None of us would've gotten here otherwise,"

Haruki looked over at the sound of her defiance. A smile worked its way across his face.

"What about Kuwabara? You can't honestly say he's a respected member of the team,"

Sakura opened her mouth to deny it, but suddenly clamped her lips shut again.

"See, even you can't argue with that. It's not just the Detective. None of them considers Kuwabara to be on the same level. Including you, honey,"

Though silent, Sakura's face resembled a deer in the headlights, and Haruki felt Sensui's silent permission to continue.

"That's why you really went after him in the storm last night, isn't it?" Haruki murmured. "You didn't think he was capable of keeping himself safe. And even after his power awakened, your low opinions didn't change. It never occurred to any of you that Kuwabara would be such a vital piece to our puzzle. Why would you, when he's the weakest?"

Sakura squeezed her eyes shut. Shame bubbled up inside her. Sickening as it was, they did have a point. None of them had realised. She'd seen Kuwabara's power with her own eyes, and even then…

No, Sakura. They're wrong. It doesn't matter whether you knew or not. You went to help Kuwabara because you care about him, not because you thought he was weak.

"Come, my boy. Let's be reasonable," Sensui's voice sounded far away. "It only makes sense that our lovely guest acted irrationally. Just another pointless attempt to prove herself to the Detective,"

Haruki smirked. "Of course, Mr Sensui. But does that make it any less pitiful? Such a prized flower desperately trying to gain validation from those who will never appreciate her worth,"

Sakura looked down while gritting her teeth. She heard both of them laughing.

"Even the Spirit Fox doesn't see your value," Sensui taunted. "You offered him your heart on a silver plate, and how did he repay you? With lies and deceit. He claimed to love you, yet you saw how he erased your memories just to keep you under his twisted control,"

"No," Sakura shook her head with a growl. "Stop pretending you know him. You don't have a clue,"

Haruki knelt in front of the bed and cupped her face.

"I know it's hard to accept, honey," he whispered. "I had to do the same thing once. A long time ago. But it's really for your own good that you understand. None of them care about you. None of them treat you right. You called out to the Spirit Fox, and what happened? He let you down,"

Sakura went to pull away. Haruki's hand slipped around the back of her neck. Now she had little choice but to look at both her captors, absorbing their every word.

"He wasn't there for you," Haruki said roughly. "Neither was the detective. They failed you, just like they always do,"

"You know it's true, Sakura," Sensui sneered. He was beyond showing any mercy at this point. "Nothing you've done for the Spirit Detective has ever been enough. You've shown your strength time and time again, and what has he given you in return? The same disrespect, the same empty promises,"

"If you're trying to bore me to death, it's working," Sakura hissed.

Haruki's fingers tightened in warning, and her anger morphed into a small whimper of pain.

"On the contrary, Miss Urameshi," Sensui looked amused as he stepped closer to her. "I want to help you,"

Her eyes widened slightly before she scowled. "Somehow I doubt it,"

"You asked what all of this is about, Sakura," Sensui said calmly. "Quite simply, it's the trial against humanity. And one might say that you are the key witness,"

Sakura's jaw dropped.

"Humanity is a disease, Miss Urameshi. You understand this better than most. You know what they're capable of. You've experienced their darkest vice. Torture. Ridicule. Single the weakest one out and pick the carcass clean,"

He started pacing the den. Sakura was reminded of a hunter who already shot his prey and was now drawing the death out to make a point.

"As long as humans exist, it will be an endless cycle of pain and misery. They eat and destroy until nothing is left but piss. The only way to stop it is with elimination. You can do this, Urameshi Sakura. You can help correct all the wrongs of this cursed world. You have the strength. I've known it all along,"

Sensui paused before locking his gaze with Sakura.

"Unlike your friends, I can see your powers for the wonder they are. You're wasted with the Spirit Detective. Wasted with Spirit World. Is that really the kind of existence you desire? The one you secretly long for? Of course not,"

Her jaw trembled.

"I know you want more than that, Sakura. You want to be free of the past. You want to become something greater than what you are. You want to be the warrior lurking within, without the shackles weighing you down. And you can have that, right now,"

Those piercing eyes were stabbing holes in her heart, but Sakura couldn't find the strength to look away.

"You can take control of your own destiny, Sakura. Without humans, there will be nobody to shield your light any longer. That small flickering ember will burn brightly, revealing who you truly are. Doesn't that sound better than allowing this world to continue?"

Nobody seemed to notice her fists clenching.

"Why would you want to allow anyone to suffer the way you have for years?" Sensui murmured. "By refusing the call, you would be directly responsible for what happens in the future. But if you act now, nobody will ever have to endure what you did again,"

He shared another smile with Haruki.

"You do want to make them pay, don't you honey?" Haruki asked with poorly concealed excitement. "Aren't you tired of being a victim? Don't you want to take back control of yourself? You can do it right now,"

Sensui nodded. "He's right, Sakura. You don't need to be helpless anymore. It's time to stretch your wings…time to show the Detective and his friends what your power can do,"

Sakura took a breath. She seemed to be wrestling with herself.

"You're an intelligent young lady, Sakura. You must know what's going to happen," Sensui's face morphed into a slight sneer. "You can't stop the tunnel from opening. Nobody can. This will be so much easier if you just submit willingly,"

Sakura's shoulders began shaking. At first glance it might look like she was crying, but that couldn't have been further from the truth.

She was giggling.

"Koenma told us you saw the world in black and white," she laughed. "I guess it's true what they say. A leopard doesn't change its spots,"

Sakura raised her head. Both Haruki and Sensui saw that she was wearing a smile identical to that of her twin.

"You really don't think much of me, do you Sensui?" she whispered. "That snake oil persona might have worked on some people, but I can see straight through you,"

Her voice was surprisingly calm. Cold, even.

"So, it's the trial of humanity, and you're the self-appointed judge, jury and executioner?" Sakura shook her head. "If that isn't the most conceited thing I've ever heard, I don't know what is,"

Haruki made a sound of anger, but Sensui held up a hand and continued to stare at Sakura with a faint smile.

"What gives you the right? Nothing but your own arrogance and overthinking mind. And that's the difference between you and my brother," Sakura whispered. "Yusuke isn't going to win any IQ contests, but there's more than one way to be intelligent,"

The room was deadly quiet. Even Sakura wasn't sure where this courage was coming from. But she kept powering on.

"You don't understand him nearly as well as you think. Yusuke's a cocky street punk and his fist might be faster than his brain, but he understands things about life that you never will. He knows that plenty of situations don't have a clear answer. There's always a different perspective. Another side to the story. You can only see your own darkness," She swallowed. "How does killing all humans make you any better than the evil you want to eliminate? Everyone has the potential for good and evil. It's our choices that define who we really are,"

It was too late for Sakura to back down now, and she didn't want to. As soon as the words left her mouth, she knew beyond any doubt that they were true.

Sensui still remained silent.

"It doesn't matter what you do to me. It doesn't matter how you try to manipulate me. Yusuke won't give up until he beats you, or dies trying," Sakura's eyes flashed. "You've made your choice, Sensui. I've made mine. I'll never willingly help you destroy the earth,"

There was dead silence. Sensui tilted his head slightly to the side.

What could be going through his mind? Sakura didn't know, and at that moment, she didn't really care. The hatred she felt for Sensui was paralysing.

"So, the bitch has some fight in her, huh?!"

Sakura jumped. What happened to his voice?

"Bratty little whore!" Sensui's hand seized a fistful of Sakura's hair. "You really don't know when to shut your pretty mouth, do ya? Looks like you'll need to learn the hard way!"

Instead of sly and calm, Sensui's tone sounded gravelly and harsh. Even his face looked slightly more twisted.

What's going on?!

But there was no time to figure anything out. Not when the stone floor was suddenly whirling towards her face.

"Aww, did that hurt?" Sensui's rough voice taunted her. "Well, suck it up Princess. There's more where that came from,"

Sakura lay face down and frozen, too stunned to reply.

What the hell is this?!

Rough hands flipped Sakura onto her back. The sudden movement caused her to cry out from pain.

"Shut it!" Sensui hauled Sakura up to eye level. "I ain't got no time for your whining,"

Haruki's teeth clenched. Sakura looked utterly terrified, but he had to trust Sensui's judgement. This had always been a possibility. As long as she didn't resist, she'd be ok…

"Oh, there it is," Sensui grinned. "That's what I like to see, especially on a girl. Ain't nothing like a little fear to make things more fun…"

His laugh turned Sakura's blood to ice.

"What do you say we turn up the heat a little?" Sensui purred, though still in that strange new voice. "I know just the thing…"

Click.

Sakura nearly melted in fear. She was looking directly down the barrel of a gun.

"That's it," Sensui seemed to be almost salivating. "Let's see just how scared you can get…"

Sensui's eyes were clouded with savagery. The most sadistic smile appeared on his face as he brought the gun closer.

Sakura whimpered, and this stirred something in Haruki.

"Mr Sensui!" he called sharply.

No response. Sensui just chuckled. The nuzzle started pressing into her porcelain skin…

"Dark Angel!"

At the sound of his code name, Sensui blinked a few times before relaxing his grip. Sakura dropped on the ground where she lay frozen. Her heart was still pounding at a million miles an hour.

"Haruki, my boy. It seems the others want to weigh in,"

Sakura couldn't stop shaking. Sensui sounded back to normal again. Controlled, polished, even courteous.

What the hell just happened?

"Of course, Mr Sensui. We'll wait," Haruki shot a small grin at Sakura.

"If you'll excuse me a moment, Miss Urameshi," Sensui said politely. "I won't be long; we still have much to discuss,"

She seemed unable to speak, only staring up at him with her face white as chalk.

Sensui took a step towards her. Without getting up, Sakura instinctively scuttled backwards.

"Don't you come near me!"

"Really, Sakura. There's no need to get hysterical,"

Sensui took another slow, deliberate move in her direction. "You know at least partially what we want now. When the time comes, I'm sure you'll make the right decision,"

His tone was almost…kind. But somehow, the softer approach was even more terrifying than if he'd shouted.

Sakura shook her head fiercely. Something was terribly wrong with this man, and it went far beyond his desire to open the tunnel.

"Give it up," her voice trembled with anger and fear. "It's your only chance to survive at this point,"

Haruki and Sensui laughed again.

"Quite a statement," Sensui sneered. "What could you possibly do without your spirit energy?"

"I've been wondering the same thing," she hissed. "But since you still won't explain your brilliant scheme, I'm starting to think you're all talk,"

"Oh really? Well if that's how you feel…" Sensui closed his eyes and smiled. "Ghost, why don't you explain the true origins of Technique Zero?"

Haruki's face lit up. "Gladly, sir,"

"It's not just your friends who failed you," Sensui leered at Sakura before making his way to the exit. "I wonder if the truth about your teacher will put the first crack in that fortress,"

"What are you talking about?" Sakura demanded.

Haruki touched the scar above his eye. "It's true that the tunnel gave me enhanced abilities, but you might say Technique Zero is a culmination of my childhood skills,"

"No…" Sakura breathed. "Don't tell me-!"

Not this. She couldn't believe it. She didn't want to believe it.

"That's right, honey. You can thank the old man for this," Haruki smirked. "I've negated your spirit energy with an enhanced version of the Koweranai technique. His blockade spell. But you wouldn't have the first clue about that, would you?"

Despite Haruki's spiteful commentary, Sakura knew about Koweranai. She knew more than he ever imagined. How could she possibly forget the way her master had applied the seal to protect her while Yusuke received the Spirit Wave orb?

Come to think of it, the sensation had been eerily similar to Technique Zero. An all-consuming chill in her very being, although Haruki's version had felt much more aggressive.

Probably caused by the tunnel, strengthened by the high concentration of demon energy.

"It's not perfect," Haruki admitted. "I never learned to use it on more than one person at a time, and…well, we don't need to go into the other weakness," he laughed. "But it's all I needed to render your powers useless, if only temporarily,"

Instead of despair, Sakura felt an irrational wave of relief flooding through her soul. Haruki had said temporarily. A very specific word. And this meant her strategy, based on her earlier hunch, was correct.

Master Shin's blockade technique was virtually unbreakable because it was coming from his untainted spirit energy. And he was a mage, honing the craft over millennia in that purpose built chamber. His power was close to god-like. I wouldn't have a hope of overcoming such a move.

But if Haruki was indeed channelling enhanced demon energy, that was a whole new ballgame. Specifically, the inherent weaknesses of his power.

I knew there had to be a deficiency to Technique Zero. Otherwise Sensui would have let him use it when they attacked our apartment.

Haruki just admitted he could only use it on one person. That was one she knew for sure, and Sakura had a very strong feeling that she'd guessed the weakness. Time.

Kurama's struggle against Gama and Touya at the Dark Tournament had shown her that blocking someone's energy didn't last forever, and neither had the shackle paint. With enough delay, Kurama was able to win, albeit by a hair.

Hadn't Haruki said something similar in passing earlier?

"They'll be here soon. Can't risk letting the technique expire…have to make sure…"

Yes, that was it. His words indicated the possibility of a time limit. Granted, he hadn't given away much, but Sakura had nothing to lose by assuming. And if this was the case, she had to buy time. As much as possible. Not just for her own safety, but to give the boys the best chance to make it through the cave. After all this macho talk, the relentless bragging about how it was impossible for them to find this place, Sakura feared what Haruki might do as Kurama and Yusuke approached. He'd somehow confronted them already without leaving here. What else was he capable of?

Either way, Sakura didn't want to find out.

With little to go on and even more limited options, she'd made the decision to stall. To keep Haruki talking, selectively arguing with him, distracting him by mentioning Kurama or Yusuke whenever it was safe to do so. The more he rambled on, the less time he would have to act.

Either the boys will find me, or my spirit energy will come back.

Every passing moment counted.

"You're looking pale, Miss Urameshi. What's the matter?"

Sakura's head snapped up to see Sensui lounging in the doorway with a knowing smirk. She hadn't even heard him enter.

"Mr Sensui," Haruki smiled. "What did the others have to say for themselves?"

"They're ready to assist as needed," Sensui smiled. "Naru in particular is very eager to have a say. But they've made a unanimous decision, and will allow us to make that call,"

"Very well, sir,"

Naru? The others?

Sakura didn't have a chance to start pondering what on earth they meant before Sensui had set his attention back on her.

"In the meantime, I couldn't help catching the last part of your explanation," He flashed a crafty grin. "Are you finally seeing the whole picture, Miss Urameshi? How little you actually learned from your late mentor?"

Sakura couldn't meet his gaze. If they were about to start insulting her master, she didn't trust herself to stay calm.

"Let's be fair, Mr Sensui," Haruki chuckled. "How could she possibly have known?"

"Sorry, I don't mean to sound condescending," Sensui said slyly. "After all, it's partly my doing. If you'd had those files from Spirit World, then you would have seen how he barely scratched the surface with your training. His final student was the least prepared,"

"Shut up," Sakura snarled.

Haruki's bright eyes glittered with spite. "Don't feel bad, honey. It's to be expected. You only had, what? Eight months of training in between playing detective's assistant? I worked on it day in, day out for three years," he laughed. "Of course, it's so much easier to study such advanced techniques as a young child. Not just Kowerenai, but Soul Projection, Celestial Serenity, Perpetual Flow, Countenance, and all the rest. But you don't know about any of those," It wasn't a question. "You only learned the basics of tsunagu. I could tell from the moment you started fighting at the tournament. Mind Connection. Telekinesis. Nothing else,"

A growl ripped out of Sakura's throat before she stopped herself. Even if he was right, she wasn't going to take the bait.

"So many mysterious techniques. Seems your master didn't teach you much, did he?" Sensui still hovered a few feet behind Haruki. "The old man thought he was protecting you by only giving you the basics. Ironic. His care is what now makes you so vulnerable. You could have had the same skills as Ghost. If you'd been stronger, if you'd read those files, you might never have fallen victim to Technique Zero. How sad that the mentor you respected failed you so completely,"

Sakura's eyes narrowed. "Don't you dare speak of my Master, Sensui," she warned.

Haruki grinned at Sensui. This was an opening he couldn't miss. He swept across the room and bent down to Sakura's level.

"What was it like, honey?" he murmured. "When you saw the light leave his eyes, what went through your mind? How did it feel, knowing the old man was gone forever?"

For a moment, Sakura's vision went blank with white-hot rage. Her body moved before her mind did.

"YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH!"

She slammed her palms into Haruki's chest. He seized her bandaged wrists.

"No, honey. You're only defending him because you don't know the truth," Haruki snarled. "He failed you, just like he failed everyone else!"

"He did more for me than you could possibly understand!" Sakura yelled back. "Get your hands off me!"

Haruki pulled her into him, twisting her arm up behind her back.

"I'm only going to say this once, so listen very carefully," he hissed in her ear. "Don't fight me, honey. Just don't. It's not worth it,"

Haruki's voice was so cold, so dangerous it seemed to freeze her in place.

"I wouldn't be concerned about that, Ghost," Sensui laughed. "The doctor did his job well,"

A moment later, Sakura's head started whirling. She swayed and collapsed against Haruki's body.

No…not again…the drugs…

"Wouldn't you know it? My little porcelain doll got herself worked up again," Haruki smirked.

"You'll find the effects of those sedatives will linger for some time, Miss Urameshi," Sensui was muted; it sounded more like she was hearing him underwater. "It's best to wait it out. Ghost, take care of her,"

Sakura felt tears pooling in her eyes again. She couldn't do anything to resist while Haruki hauled her back to the bed.

He laid her down before reclining next to her. "There, now isn't that better?"

Even in the grip of a dizzy spell, even with her eyes welling up, Sakura still gave him her filthiest look. None of this was ok. She would not allow him to think it was for a moment.

I swear, you will regret every moment of this when the boys are done with you.

Anger swelled inside Haruki. His fists clenched before he felt Sensui's icy gaze on him. He had to stop, now.

What would the Spirit Fox do?

"Just relax, honey," Haruki brushed the wetness from her eyes. "And don't cry. You'll need your strength when Itsuki is ready,"

Sensui slipped his hands in his pockets. It was a small setback, but the girl's iron determination still played rather nicely into his plan.

Perhaps it was time to raise the stakes a little.

"Ghost, I do believe your lovely guest could do with a taste of reality," he leered at her again. "Don't you agree?"

Haruki looked up from his position beside Sakura. "What did you have in mind?"

"I don't think she realises how futile all this resistance is," Sensui's eyes shone. "What do you say? Shall we show her the game?"

Haruki's face brightened. He knew what Sensui wanted. "That sounds like an excellent idea, Mr Sensui,"

"Forget it," Sakura murmured. Weak as she felt, she hoped at least some venom would translate. "Whatever you're thinking, it's a waste of time,"

Haruki leaned down, inches from Sakura's face, and gently stroked her hair.

"You say that now, my little porcelain doll," he purred. "But I wonder how long your resolve will last when you see what happens next…"

Sakura yanked away from him. "I wasn't talking to you,"

Her furious gaze flipped towards Sensui.

"For someone who's supposed to be the mastermind of this scheme, I have to say I'm disappointed. You're meant to be so smart, Sensui. And yet you've forgotten something,"

"Oh?" Sensui raised a brow.

"You watched the tournament videos, but you didn't pay enough attention to my last match," She looked him dead in the eye. "I said nobody would ever control me through my fear again. And that statement very much includes you,"

Sensui looked at Sakura for a long moment before he spoke.

"Simple-minded girl. I don't need to resort to fear. You're far too predictable for that," he nodded at the television. "Besides, I have something much more effective. Ghost?"

Haruki raised his right hand. "You're familiar with tsunagu, correct? I doubt you've seen it used this way before!"

Some kind of energy shot from his fingertips onto the television screen which sprang to life.

Sakura winced at the sudden brightness. "What are you doing?!"

"Oh, just showcasing another tactic the old man didn't teach you," Haruki crowed before gazing at his hand. "But to be completely fair, I've rarely had occasion for it myself,"

"True, my boy. And that just proves my point," Sensui chuckled. "Even a blunt knife can have its uses,"

Something in his voice dragged Sakura's attention away from the screen.

Am I crazy, or did I just hear a double meaning?

Either was possible, but Sakura also couldn't help noticing how Sensui's malicious stare lingered on Haruki for a little too long. The sight made Sakura feel even more uneasy.

"Perhaps you've noticed already, Miss Urameshi? One such knife is causing quite the headache for your friends right now,"

"What do you-?"

Haruki cupped her chin. "Remember that little game we played at the hospital? Let's just say the next game will have much higher stakes," He jerked his head towards the television. "See for yourself, honey,"

Sakura shook her head to counteract the dizziness. The effect was minimal, but she was able to get a slightly better look at what was happening.

The boys! They're here!

A much larger group than she'd expected was standing before a small figure on a throne. Sakura performed a quick head count. Yana, Kaito, Genkai, and…

Sakura gasped before she could stop herself.

Hiei?!

Relief almost overtook her. Sure as she lived, the fire demon was standing amongst the group. His face was impassive as ever, but there was no mistaking it. Yusuke had been right from the beginning.

He really did come back.

A weak, watery smile appeared on her lips. But beside her, Haruki hissed softly.

"So, the traitor goes before them. Even you, Spirit Detective?"

Someone was walking forward. Sakura recognised Mitari, and her hand went over her mouth.

So he came after all.

Glad as she was to see his redemption, Sakura was far more interested in who she spotted behind him.

Yusuke…

Her brother had his arms tightly crossed over his chest. The look on his face was borderline murderous. And positioned just beside him was the one she longed for most.

"Kurama!" Sakura breathed. Even with the distance between them, the very sight of her lover was enough to make her fear melt away.

I knew you'd come. I knew it!

For the first time since this ordeal began, she felt halfway safe. At least, until she saw his face properly.

"What's he frowning at?" Sakura murmured before her eyes fell on Amanuma. "And who's that little kid? What's going on?"

"You seem to be familiar with the names of our team," Sensui said without looking at her. "That boy there is Amanuma, the Game Master. His territory allows him to bring video games to life,"

Sakura blinked. "Games? Hang on…is that Goblin City?"

Though she hadn't played herself, anyone with eyes and ears knew the game. She couldn't go anywhere without seeing it advertised.

"Well done, honey. That's right," Haruki's eyes glistened. "Amanuma has been waiting so patiently to play Goblin City with them all,"

As soon as Mitari took his place at the console, the world around him morphed and a game of tennis began.

"This is your idea of a challenge?" Sakura asked in utter disbelief. "After seeing every single one of us fighting in the Dark Tournament, you make the boys go up against a kid and a video game?"

"Appearances can be deceiving, Sakura," Sensui said calmly. "I would have thought you'd understand that by now,"

Sakura gritted her teeth. "Enough with the cryptic messages. Just talk straight!"

"The rules of the game are the rules of his territory," Sensui smirked. "You can make of that what you will, but I wonder if your friends will be able to figure it out,"

"They will," Sakura insisted. "I know them; they'll do anything,"

Sensui's brow arched. "You say that, Miss Urameshi. The constant refrain of how the Detective and his friends will overcome anything. But your, shall we say, assertion belies your fear. Do you actually believe they'll win, or is it mere lip service?"

Sakura's lips parted. She was hesitating.

"It's easy to say you believe in them," Sensui mused. "But if we're getting to the crux of the matter, just how far do you think they're willing to go to ensure that victory?"

Sakura didn't dare look away. Her mouth went dry.

"You'll see for yourself, of course, but I'm curious as to what you're expecting," Sensui smiled. "Tell me, Sakura. What compromises will they undertake? What moral lines will they choose to cross, even if there is no going back? Answer me that,"

What does he want me to say to him? What can I say?

Sensui might be larger than life, but the television feed was still playing behind him. Sakura saw the determined look worn by Kurama, observed the absolute steel in her brother's eyes, and knew there was only one answer she could possibly give.

Her eyes narrowed in defiance as she said, "Whatever it takes, they'll win,"

Sensui and Haruki glanced at each other, apparently sharing some unspoken thoughts.

"Whatever it takes?" Sensui repeated. "Well, you had better hope you're wrong there,"

Even amidst their cruel laughter, Sakura swallowed her emotions and gazed back at Kurama.

I'm waiting for you. I know you're coming for me.

She found herself at the end of the bed, unconsciously reaching for Kurama. All she wanted was to fall through the screen and find herself wrapped in his arms…

Hands clamped down on her shoulders from behind.

"Feeling better, my sweet?" Haruki purred. "Perhaps I'll let you enjoy the show. You'll get to see them lose. Then I'll go and destroy the rest of your attachments. Without the shackles, you'll give me the answers I want. Unless you want to stop being stubborn and tell me now?"

Sakura's fists tightened. How she longed to literally knock some sense into him…

Huh?

Her eyes widened slightly and she stole a glance at her hands. Was it her imagination, or did they actually feel slightly warmer?

My spirit energy…it's faint, but I think I can feel it coming back!

The concept of time came to a screeching halt. Had her strategy to stall worked?

Think, Sakura. Stay calm. Think this through.

It was far too early to tell for sure. Frankly, the sensation in her hands might be from any number of things. If it was her power returning, then it probably wouldn't be full strength. Not with the time it was blocked and all the drugs they'd given her. And if they realised what was happening, the consequences would be deadly.

She couldn't let them suspect anything until her time came, and that might not be until the boys arrived.

"Did you hear me, honey?" Haruki leaned around Sakura, mouth inches from her ear. "If you just tell me what I want to know, I'll turn this off. I won't make you watch. You'll be spared seeing them all die,"

Sakura flinched. "Stop it!"

"Don't rush the poor girl, Haruki," Sensui sighed. "There's plenty of time for that. We should simply enjoy the game for now. After all…" he laughed darkly. "This isn't the main feature,"

Sakura glared at Sensui, hating him. "What are you saying?"

"So impatient, Miss Urameshi," he sniffed. "Between you and the detective, you're supposed to be the more rational one,"

Sure enough, Yusuke's furious yell echoed from the live feed. "How is he supposed to concentrate when that little bitch won't shut up?!"

From behind Sakura, Haruki laughed scornfully at his outburst. "Irrational as ever, Spirit Detective. And it's precisely what will seal your fate in the end. As for you…"

His eyes travelled from Yusuke to the one he loathed most.

"When the time comes, I'm going to savour every moment of your demise, Spirit Fox,"

Sakura trembled. "No,"

"Oh yes," Haruki was practically salivating. "Make no mistake, the Legendary Bandit will die by my hands tonight. After he loses everything,"

His lips brushed over Sakura's neck and travelled down to her shoulder. She instinctively went to slap him away when his hand grabbed hold of her wrist.

"You'll see, my little porcelain doll," Haruki whispered. "You'll understand the truth when they've gone. And then…"

The box reappeared, the lid opened, and Sakura stared at what lay within.

"With no attachments and nothing left here, I'll be taking my bride to Demon World where we belong."

Sakura pulled away, but it was no use. His grip only tightened around her wrist.

"It's not like you have a choice, honey," Haruki murmured. "Either you put it on, or I do it for you,"

Sakura ripped her gaze from the sparkling sapphire ring to the pair of blue eyes clouded with delusion and lust.

What was happening to her? This crazed boy in a man's body…had he truly once been a student of wise and gentle Master Shinsuke? It didn't seem feasible given what she was seeing.

Why? How?

Sakura couldn't contain herself any longer. The question she had been fighting to suppress all this time came out with a vengeance.

"What happened to you?!" Sakura demanded with a choked sob. "That little boy in the photo, where is he?!"

Haruki froze for a second. "What photo?"

"The one Master Shin left for me," Sakura spat. "All three of you, his Golden Trio,"

Haruki scowled. "How could you possibly have seen anything of the sort?"

"I found it the day you broke into Spirit World," Sakura shot back. "It's how I figured out who you really were,"

Haruki stared at her. "You…were there?"

She nodded. "Only a couple of hours later. I was supposed to investigate whether one of his students was still alive,"

His jaw trembled slightly.

"When I arrived to see Koenma, you'd made your move. The only thing left was that list of names, and I thought I'd reached a dead end." Sakura dragged herself upright. "But something inside told me that there was more. So I went to his garden,"

Haruki blinked. "What garden?"

"His private chamber in Spirit World. A place to hone his skills and become a better teacher," Sakura mopped her eyes. "Didn't you know? It was his prize for winning the Dark Tournament,"

Haruki looked down. Sakura realised his hands were shaking.

"I don't know how I knew to look there," she continued. "It wasn't much more than a gut feeling. But I went. And that's where I found a diary he'd hidden. Inside was the picture of Sora, Kenji and you,"

Haruki went white. "That photo? You saw? No, you can't have…"

"I saw three children in that photo, but the youngest boy? I'm sure as hell not looking at him now," Sakura closed her eyes as tears of fury slipped out underneath. "You're twisted beyond recognition. Master Shin would be heartbroken,"

"Is that right?" Haruki hissed. "I'm curious, did the old man tell you anything useful, or did he just give you the bare minimum and expect you to work out the rest?"

Sakura didn't respond.

"Just like I thought," he bared his teeth. "Newsflash, honey. That picture can't tell you anything. It's just a picture. A moment in time. That pathetic little boy doesn't exist anymore!"

"What about Kenji? And Sora?" Sakura snapped. "Didn't they mean anything to you?"

"Shut up!" Haruki shouted suddenly. "Just SHUT UP! Don't talk about things you don't understand! You haven't got the first clue!"

"I-"

SMACK!

"There's a lot you don't know about me, honey," Haruki breathed. "And I think it's high time you learned. I'm going to do what the Spirit Fox never did. I'll show you everything!"

Sakura gasped, knowing what was about to happen. There was no stopping him. But strangely enough, part of her actually wanted to see.

Haruki's hand crashed down on her forehead and the world faded into one from the past…

*~*~*

"This way, follow me!"

Out of the training room they ran, through the main entrance and around the side of the old building. The little boy didn't know what to make of his companion's excited tone, or the way she tugged him along behind her, but he followed without complaint.

"Sora, where are we going?"

The blonde girl glanced back at him before darting out and dragging him behind the much smaller shrine nearby. She crouched down and finally looked at him properly.

"I have something to show you, Hari-chan!" Her whole face was shining with a secret.

"What is it?" He smiled at the nickname.

"You'll see!" Sora giggled. "Now come on!"

She grabbed his hand again and took off as fast as her legs could carry her. Haruki gasped when he realised where they were headed.

"The forest? Why are we going there?"

Sora shook her head. "It's a surprise, Hari-chan. This way!"

A surprise? Haruki's heart fluttered with excitement. Once they had stepped into the trees and were safely out of sight, Sora turned around.

"You have to close your eyes now,"

"What for?"

"Because it's a surprise, Hari-chan!" Sora grinned. "Trust me,"

Her smile…it was like sunshine. Haruki couldn't argue with her. He obediently shut his eyes.

"No peeking!" Sora warned. She carefully led her friend further into the trees. Haruki was about to ask how much further they were going when she finally came to a halt.

"Ok, now open!"

He opened his eyes and looked around in awe. Sora had taken him to an enchanting little glade about ten metres into the woods. The crystal clear stream bubbled with laughter nearby. Golden sunlight filtered through the canopy of leaves, spilling onto the array of flowers and waving vines surrounding where they stood. A small elf-sized house handcrafted from willow tree bark stood amongst the ferns and toadstools.

"See, Hari-chan?" Sora squeezed his hand. "It's a fairy garden,"

Haruki smiled. "You made this?"

"Well, almost," Sora admitted shyly. "I did the house and stuff, but Master Shin helped me plant the flowers. Do you like it?"

Haruki nodded. "So…is this the surprise?"

Sora smiled brighter than ever. "Yes, but I haven't shown you the best part!"

So saying, Sora stretched out her tiny hand. A cloud of daisies rose into the air, spiralling around the two of them in a gentle dance.

Haruki was spellbound. He had never been very good at telekinesis, but Sora? Even Master Shin said she was light years ahead of anyone he'd ever taught.

As if to prove this, Sora directed the flowers higher until they hovered over the stream. In turn, the water easily yielded to her wordless command.

There was now a dry path at their feet. A clear passage across while the water lapped softly on either side.

"You can come out now!" Sora called. "It's safe!"

Moments later, they arrived. The butterflies came first, flying so close their wings brushed Haruki's cheek. Next came a robin, chirping happily, and a squirrel which quickly clambered to sit on Sora's shoulder.

Something nudged Haruki. He looked down quickly to see a Japanese serow nuzzling his leg. Without thinking, Haruki jumped back in alarm.

"It's ok, Hari-chan!" Sora said quickly. "That's just Tadeo, he won't hurt you,"

Sure enough, the serow was gazing at Haruki with gentle eyes before pressing its forehead against his shin.

"See?" Sora kept her tone gentle. "That means he likes you,"

Haruki trembled. He couldn't help feeling nervous. "But Sora, he doesn't know me!"

"Animals always know who has kindness in their heart," she answered. "Isn't that right?"

Tadeo bleated, which Sora could apparently understand.

"Yes, Tadeo," she cooed. "He's my friend. Go on Hari-chan. Give him a pat,"

Haruki hesitated. This was a wild creature…but if Sora said it was ok, then he would do it. He reached his shaking hand down to stroke Tadeo's soft head.

It was like touching a cloud. Haruki couldn't help it. He grinned.

"See?" Sora pressed. "He's not scary,"

"No," Haruki agreed. "But Sora? Why did you make this garden? Why did you show me?"

She flushed slightly and lowered her eyes. "It's for us, Hari-chan. Somewhere to play. Kenji too. The animals like it here. It'll be fun, don't you think?"

"But Master Shin said we can't go too far from the shrine! He said it's dangerous out here!"

"Oh, but we aren't too far!" Sora's clouds of blonde hair bounced around her earnest face. "We can still see the shrine from here. And if Kenji is with us, we'll be ok!"

Haruki opened his mouth to reply, but an unexpected rustle stopped him.

Tadeo had been quietly grazing at their feet when his head suddenly snapped up. The squirrel and robin did the same.

"What is it?" Sora asked. "What's the matter?"

The butterflies and robin flew away. The squirrel bolted out of sight. Tadeo stared across the stream for a second before abruptly taking off in the opposite direction.

"Tadeo!" Sora cried as she started running after him. "Where are you going?"

Haruki gasped. "Sora, wait!"

She wasn't listening. "Come back! What's wrong?"

The answer jumped into view, snapping and snarling with fury. A wolf.

Haruki froze. So did Sora.

The wolf slowly advanced on the children. The growls and bared fangs indicated one thing. Haruki knew he had to protect her. But how?

"Sora, get back!" he whispered. "Hurry!"

Sora whimpered. She took a tiny step backwards, only to lose her balance and fall on top of the elf house.

The wolf took this as an invitation and lunged for her.

"No!" Haruki yelled. He wanted to move, to stop the creature, but his legs wouldn't obey.

Sora shrieked in terror and flung her arms up in self-defence, but the wolf was nearly upon her…

A flash of movement, a howl of pain, and the wolf went flying backwards.

Haruki's jaw dropped. The new arrival was standing protectively in front of Sora, shielding her with a frame much taller than his eight years.

"Kenji?!"

Their friend turned around and gave them a roguish wink.

"You guys all good?"

Without waiting for an answer, Kenji crouched in preparation. The wolf had recovered from the initial hit and was coming back for more.

"Oh, so you wanna play?" Kenji grinned. He had nothing to fear. "Sure, I'm up for it!"

With another snap of its jaws, the wolf hurled itself forward, Kenji easily dodged and dispelled the threat with a casual punch.

Haruki hurried forward and pulled Sora back while Kenji fought. The wolf's howls of pain were interjected with the sound of Kenji's fists. At last, the wolf fell to the ground.

"You mess with my friends, you die!" Kenji started charging up a Ki attack.

"No!" Sora cried. She seized Kenji's arm. "Don't kill him! Look!"

"Huh?" Kenji blinked. "Oh,"

Haruki saw it too. Hidden behind the bushes nearby was a mother wolf shielding her five pups.

"See?! He was just trying to protect his babies!" Sora's eyes filled with tears. "I'm so sorry, Mr Wolf. I didn't know you lived here. I'll move my fairy garden away!"

The wolf struggled to its feet and limped back to his family. All the fight had gone out of it.

Kenji remained in front of his younger friends and watched them leave. Once all seven wolves were finally out of sight, he relaxed his sparring stance and turned to them both.

Sora was openly weeping as she fell to her knees. "My fairy garden!" she sobbed. "No!"

Kenji might have saved them, but his efforts had all but destroyed her little paradise. Flowers, vines, everything was trampled and in ruins.

"Oh, sheesh," Kenji winced. "Sorry about that,"

Haruki dropped beside Sora and hugged her. "It's ok, Sora," he murmured. "We can fix it,"

Kenji rubbed the back of his head. He wasn't sure what to say. "Haruki, did you guys get hurt?"

Haruki shook his head. He was far more interested in the way Sora clung to him. Her hands were scratched and she was covered in dirt from the fall, but he didn't care.

"Good," Kenji sighed. "I've been looking all over for you two. Master Shin's worried,"

Right on cue, a voice rang out. "Kenji? Kenji, where are you?"

"Over here, Master!" Kenji waved. "It's all good, I found them!"

"Sora! Haruki! Oh, thank goodness!" Master Shinsuke hurried over. He sounded weak with relief. "Are you three alright?"

"Of course!" Kenji stood at his full height. "You don't have to worry, Master. I'm not letting anything happen to my friends!"

Master Shin placed a grateful hand on Kenji's head. "Thank you, my boy. I knew I could rely on you,"

He knelt down in front of Haruki and Sora. "Children, what happened? What are you doing out here?"

"We were playing, Master Shin," Haruki explained. "Sora and I, we…"

"It's my fault, sir," Sora sniffled. "I wanted to show my fairy garden to Hari-chan, but…there was a wolf…" She buried her head in Haruki's sleeve. "I'm sorry,"

Master Shin sighed and pulled the youngsters into his arms. "It's alright, children. I'm just glad you're safe,"

Haruki swallowed. "I won't come out here again, Sir. I know you said it's dangerous,"

"There is always a reason for my warnings, Haruki," Master Shin nodded gravely. "And Sora, I told you that you could only visit your fairy garden with my supervision. Remember?"

Sora wiped her eyes. "Yes, sir. I was just excited,"

"I know," he said gently. "But we can't let excitement get in the way of our safety, can we?"

Sora nodded. Master Shin patted her cheek.

"That's a good girl. Come, we must return to the shrine,"

Sora turned back to look at the ruined glade. She looked devastated, and Haruki longed to soothe that pain.

"It's ok, Sora-chan," He slipped an arm around her. "We can make another fairy garden. An even better one,"

"But Hari-chan, my animal friends…what if they don't come back?!"

"They will!" Haruki insisted. "You'll see,"

Master Shin smiled down at them. "Haruki is right, Sora. It may take time, but I'm sure they will return,"

The thought visibly cheered Sora, and Haruki felt his heart lighten.

They were about to enter the main classroom when Kenji pulled Haruki aside.

"Tomorrow night, meet me in the training room when everyone's asleep,"

Haruki blinked. "Huh? How come?"

"Can't say here," Kenji pressed a finger to his mouth. "Just promise you'll come, ok?"

Haruki only hesitated a moment before nodding. He had a feeling he already knew what Kenji had in mind.

*~*~*

"So idyllic, right?"

The scene faded, replaced by Haruki's terrifying glare.

"Such a peaceful existence. Three friends, a class of talented students, the greatest telepathy master training them all. What could possibly go wrong?"

Sakura caught her breath before saying, "I already know what happened. He told me-"

"Shut up!" Haruki snapped. "You only know what the old man told you! You don't know the truth. You don't know about this!"

In one frenzied move, he ripped his shirt off and stepped into the candlelight.

Sakura's mouth fell open in horror.

"Pretty, isn't it?" Haruki spat. "Didn't they do a fabulous job?"

Any words Sakura may have wanted to speak died on her tongue. Never in a million years had she expected to see this.

Haruki's well-muscled body was absolutely covered in hideous scars. Some were large and jagged, others were small but clearly made up for the size with their apparent depth.

The most prominent by far was on Haruki's chest. Even in the dim light, she saw a crude engraving of the kanji for monster. It was stretched and distorted, like it had been carved years ago, and grown along with him.

Oh God…

Despite the passage of time, Sakura could tell the original injuries had been caused by a variety of instruments. Knives, whips, weapon discharges, burning, acid. It was ghastly

"What's the matter, honey? Too much?" Haruki sneered at her obvious dismay.

"Haruki…" Sakura put a hand over her mouth. She felt sick.

"I hate to say it, but we're only just getting started," he flexed his fist. "After all, I said I'd show you everything,"

He stretched out a hand. Another wave of memories reared up from the darkness and pulled Sakura back below the surface.
