Chapter One:
"You've got to be kidding me!" Fury, Most Feared Pirate King of the Seven Seas, swiped his arms across his solid oak desk, scattering papers everywhere.
His first mate, Maria Hill, shifted slightly, eyeing the mess that he had just made. "I am not entirely certain what about this entire mess you did not understand. I believe Captain Coulson made his case very clear."
Coulson glanced briefly over at the stern pirate that clearly didn't see the problem. "I think the problem is the fact that Barton and Romanov are not the only pirates that have been giving us grief. I am not entirely sure if you noticed this… but Stark has lost his entire crew due to the fact that he doesn't play well with others. Banner has essentially locked himself away on the other side of the island due to his, uh, anger issues." Pausing, he turned to face his king, eyebrow slowly inching upwards. "Also since he lost his entire crew to that armada a while back, Rogers hasn't been out on the sea."
"So what do you want me to do about all of this? Five pirates causing problems really isn't that big of a deal." Hill crossed her arms, clearly not impressed with all the issues that Coulson was pointing out to them.
Fury sighed as he stared down at the few maps that hadn't gone crashing to the ground in his fit over hearing that Barton had taken to pretending to shoot at the new pirates, while Romanov was simply terrifying everyone to death. There really was only one thing that he could do. "Send them to the mainland. All five of them. I will not let their idiocy ruin my reputation. Go now."
Recognizing the dismissal as what it was, they quickly left his office. Fury rubbed his forehead, his single eye twitching with annoyance. Sometimes he had to wonder why he even bothered keeping certain pirates on. Coulson was a wonderful, perfect even, pirate… the only thing that anyone ever complained about to Fury about him was the fact that he still believed in all of the old Salior's Tales that his mother, former pirate queen Peggy Carter-Coulson, had taught him as a child. Fury groaned as he sank low into his plush chair, leaning his head backwards so as to stare at the ceiling. Since his father's untimely death, he had essentially been raised right next to Coulson, due to being his predecessor's first mate's son. Now that she was dead, and he was the pirate king, he could see why she never believed that Coulson could make it as the next ruler of S.H.I.E.L.D. He had half expected the guy to start ranting on how helpful these five would be if HYDRA showed its face. "Let's hope they don't throw too much weight around about being sent away…"
"WHAT!?" Clint Barton, pirate since birth, jumped down from the tree branch he was hanging upside down from, bewilderment flooding his voice. "You can't do that! I have family here!"
Natasha Romanov didn't appear to be surprised about this revelation, her face perfectly blank. Sometimes like this made Coulson wonder if she was even human, or if she was one of HYDRA's drones disguised as a human. Or some other type of monster. Maybe she was even a mind reader..? "When do we leave?" Of course she'll just shrug this decision off.
"Tonight. Stark, Banner, and Rogers will be going to the mainland with you two. I suggest figuring out what you intend to do for the rest of your lives now that piracy isn't an option." Wasn't an option because no pirate ruler was insane enough to take on banished pirates. That was just asking for bad luck.
"Coulson, you sure that Fury wants us gone? I mean… he's banishing us to the mainland!" Clint was getting somewhat panicky, knowing that his wife and young children wouldn't be able to come with him. Not unless Fury was worried his incompetence was genetic and ordered him to take his entire family with him.
Coulson rubbed his forehead, suddenly feeling the beginning of a headache threatening to blossom. "Clint… I like you. You're one of the best pirates I've ever worked with. You left Crime Circus to join us here… it's just that you're not mature enough it seems to actually handle a pirate's life." Clint appeared to be slightly unsettled over the fact that Coulson just reminded him that he was born and raised a pirate… in a completely different pirate kingdom.
"I like it here at S.H.I.E.L.D., I don't want to leave here."
"Should have thought about that before you sent most of my crew packing in tears because they couldn't handle you." Coulson turned to leave, hating to be the bringer of bad news. "Get packing. You leave tonight."
Tony Stark leaned against the main mast of the Banisher, an air of indifference wafting off of him. He had never wanted to be a pirate. Why would he? Just cause his father was the pirate captain Savvy Howard doesn't mean he wanted to follow his father's footsteps. Truth be told, having most of his father's old crew quit on him was a dream come true. Now he could go to the mainland and pretend that he had no connections to the world of pirates. He could build new things… invent new things to make life so much easier than ever before. Lifting a hand up, he tapped the glowing circle that was embedded in his chest. A small smile crossed his features as he considered the fact that his suit soon would get the attention it totally deserved.
Vaguely, he wondered who exactly was all going to be banished to the mainland with him. Hill made it clear that he wasn't the only one being banished, but still he wouldn't mind knowing who else was getting banished. Glancing towards the gangplank, he was startled to see a rather well-known face in the pirate world cautiously walking the gangplank, blue eyes darting everywhere. "Well well well… if it isn't Captain Rogers, pirate extraordinaire. What brings you to the Banisher?"
Steve Rogers paused upon hearing his old friend's son's voice calling out to him, sarcasm dripping from his voice. "Aren't you Howard's kid?" He stiffened slightly, staring at the slightly older young man.
"So what if I am? I can't wait to get to the mainland." Tony growled out, rolling his eyes skyward, before heading down to the designated cabins for banished pirates.
Steve frowned, but made no move to move from the currently not crowded walkway. He had heard about how Bruce Banner, another well respected pirate before some kind of accident, was being sent to the mainland as well. While he wasn't as verbal as Coulson on his knowledge in all of the old Sailor's Tales, he suspected that Banner's newly developed anger issues might have to do with one of them.
Speaking of Banner… Bruce Banner was clutching his bag close to his chest as he approached, eyeing anything that appeared to move with a great deal of apprehension. "First mate Banner. Pleasure to meet you I am sure." Moving with the casualness borne of well earned confidence, Steve moved to offer an hand out to the jittery pirate.
Banner jumped at the sudden greeting from the buff pirate captain, before cautiously reaching a hand out to shake his hand as well. "Um… hi. I didn't realize that you were banished as well."
"Yeah… well. I need a break from this. After what had happened…" Steve broke off, glancing to the side to see two more pirates sitting on a barrel of something near the galley's entrance.
"That's right. Your entire crew was destroyed by some armada." Banner nodded in understanding.
Steve shook his head as he muttered something under his breath. "It wasn't the armada…" Noticing the look that Banner was giving him, he quickly changed direction, turning away from the two onlookers. "You… by chance didn't run into the Green Fog of Monstrous Transformations during your last trip."
Banner opened and closed his mouth, shock flooding his features for several seconds, before he finally turned to look more closely at the younger man. "You do realize that is just an old Sailor's Tale that old sailors and pirates alike tell their kids to keep them on dry land, right?"
Steve noted the way his eyes had widened, as well as how he wrung his hands together nervously. "I know. I also know that there is truth in those tales. Just need to know where to look for them is all." Steve left, moving down below to find his assigned cabin.
Banner stood still, panic slowly rising up inside of him. Taking in several deep breaths, he somehow managed to calm down before HE could awake. Rubbing his arm to rid himself of the goosebumps he felt trying to pop up, he walked over to where the other two were sitting. Since they weren't wearing the uniform of the guards that ran the Banisher, he figured they were other pirates that were being banished. "Hey… name's Bruce Banner." He tightened his grip on his bag, eyes darting everywhere as he assessed the best escape route.
"Clint Barton. This is Natasha Romanov. Apparently when you get kicked off of six different ships in a row that means you're a problem and need to spend the rest of your life on the mainland away from your family." Clint growled out, ignoring the flat look of annoyance that Natasha sent his way.
"If you need me I'll be in my cabin." Natasha jumped down, swiftly heading below deck.
Banner swallowed hard at that, shifting slightly even as he noticed that one of the guards was already pulling the gangplank up. Which meant only one thing… all banished pirates were on board with all personnel, and it was time to leave. He could only hope that the Other Guy didn't decide to let his dislike of small spaces known anytime soon...
A/N: I obviously don't own anything and this is my disclaimer for this entire story. I have never watched the MCU, but have read some fanfics, especially over at the crossovers, so I'll be mainly going off of things that appear to show up frequently in all of them. Basically, I am declaring this as an AU so you all can't yell at me if someone is OOC. Just saying. AU. Not even canon... just AU. Let me know if you like this... I'm not really expecting anyone to like this. It's just a case of my sister and I were talking and she mentioned that she actually would not mind one bit if there was a Pirate AU for the Avengers, claiming that it sounded like a fun read. So... my response to hearing that is to secretly write this chapter up to see if she was right about it being something that would be a fun read.
There will be magic, and higher tech than they should be capable of, scattered throughout this story. I'm thinking that if you guys like it enough, I might write a couple of sequels, Yo Ho Oh No!, and trying to think up a good piratey name for the third one.
