Rarepair week Day 1(Cookies/cupcakes) Nagito/Mahiru.

"Why do I smell smoke?" Mahiru asked no one in particular as she was walking past the the school's cooking class. The school was having its upcoming sports week and of course multiple ultimates with food related talents along with amature cooks would be flooding in and out the place. Right now other then seeing the occasional student the halls were pretty empty save for the smell in the air.

Part of Mahiru wanted to just keep walking since even if someone was burning a dish surely they wouldn't burn down the classroom. The fire alarm in that room had been replaced recently if it got that bad and no one could be that accident prone right? Just as quickly as Mahiru thought this several people immediately flooded her mind that actually might burn down the place either on accident or on purpose. A bad feeling wormed into her gut.

"Maybe I'll just take a quick peak in." The ultimate photographer quickly made a beeline inside the room. She was met with the sight of a small cloud forming over the oven and quickly went to turn it off. Then she cracked open a window to let some of it out. Trying not to breathe in to much smoke she put one hand over her face while the other gloved one open the machine. Mahiru wasn't sure if they were suppose to be muffins, cupcakes, or possibly a a meat dish with odd colored lumps. Taking out the ruined concoction she turned to the sound of snoring behind her that had gone unnoticed when first walking in.

There sleeping without a care in the world was the ultimate lucky student. Rather then the plucky and helpful brunet of class 78 however was the white haired pessimist of Mahiru's class known as Nagito.

It must of been part of his bizarre luck cycle that the alarm didn't go off but that he somehow was able to breathe just fine since his hoodie was over his head. A feeling of both annoyance at his carelessness but relief Nagito didn't burn alive left the girl with conflicting emotions. The annoyance won out in the end as Mahiru slammed the ruined tray on the table.

"Hmmph?! What? Oh hello Mahiru..." He smiled a little to carefree for her liking upon waking up before his eyes widened. "Oh crap I fell asleep cooking again?" His green eyes followed her own glaring ones as they both now looked at the burnt dish. "I could of sworn I set the timer for just under 30 minutes." He finally said.

"Really?! Jeez, that's all you have to say for yourself nagito? Your not a little kid and need to get your sleep schedule in order if your falling asleep that quickly. If I hadn't walked in here not only could the whole school of burned down but you along with it. Do you know how guilty I'd feel if I just walked off like I planned to?" Mahiru lectured him.

Nagito to his credit at least looked ashamed as he bowed his head in apology.

"Your right, it was thoughtless of me to make anyone worry over me on top of putting the school in danger like that. I really am horrible at being a helpful ultimate. My luck would of probably only saved me in the blaze instead of taking me like dese-" He was quickly cut off by Mahiru putting her hands firmly on his shoulders with a shake.

"Don't you dare finish that by saying you deserve to burn! I thought by now you gotten some help with that whole self deprecation thing since first year. I don't mind worrying about people and none of us do regardless if their an ultimate or not. Just remember to get help with stuff like this if your tired so we can do the worrying a bit less okay?" Instead of answering he gave her another happy half smile looking like he wanted to apologize again but trying not to. "Well at least that's a bit of improvement from last year." She thought. They stood together in a comfortable silence for a few seconds.

His face went from smiling to an oddly confused before looking bashful. Confused mahiru followed his gaze only to realize she was not only more close then she had meant to be but her hands were still on his shoulders. Anyone walking in would of assumed something less innocent then fire safety lectures was going on between them. Deciding to use that as segway out the awkward moment, she released her hold while stepping back. Pretending to clear her throat with a cough from lingering smoke it seemed best to focus again on what she originally wanted to ask when waking him.

"Ahem, what were you trying to cook in here anyway Nagito?"

"Oh, I was making cupcakes for the the sports festival. I remembered a few of our classmates and the other classes got into a pretty heated debate on it remember? It was about if muffins or cupcakes were better. I'm not personally a big sweets guy but I admired the passion of of the discussion. I also did agree with your point of them being more festive with both flavor and color."

Picking up the obliterated cupcakes with a glove hand Nagito turned away to toss them.

"Unfortunately I'm not the best cook as you witnessed. I've been also been helping Kazuichi with some things he wanted to show off at the festival lately."
"Oh, so that explains his sleepiness? I'm going to have to have a talk with Souda later." Mahiru thought.

The red head shook her head in disappointment.

"Well no wonder your drowsy but Kazuichi shouldn't be making you stay up so late every night. If he's going to make people do his lazy guy labor of his own talent then he should at least switch up partners so they don't get to exhausted. Still such an irresponsible boy after all this time. I can help you out if you want."

"Really? I'd really appreciate that thank you!" He said with more then usual. Not a lot of things got him excited so seeing that much joy on his face made the other ultimate happy.

"You really don't have to thank me, just follow what I say and do so things can go smoothly."

"Yes ma'am."

It took a bit of trying since instructions were hard for Nagito to read but they eventually got a good batter down and decided to go with a marble cupcake base. Changing the batteries on the fire alarm again just in case. They then put the batch in the oven before starting on making and choosing icing colors.
While mixing Mahiru couldn't help but notice Nagito fidget in place a lot as he looked between his own icing bowl and her. Did he have something to say?

Taking a raised eyebrow from her as permission to speak he finally spoke up.

"I...I know you already said you didn't want a thank you and there's dozens of other people you can say yes to. In fact feel free to just tell me go take a-"

"Nagito..."Once again she cut him off with bit of warning in her tone which he laughed at.

"Right, right, no putting myself down and get to the point. Do you want to maybe have coffee when we're all done here? Just to make up for the whole near fire thing if that's all you want it to be."

Knowing how much effort it must taken for him to ask that without adding "scum like me" in there someplace she once again appreciate something about him. He might cause trouble unintentionally at times but he always had a good heart in the end. She was uncertain on how honest his reason was but there was no denying his reasoning for asking might line up her real reason for constant butterflies upon his photogenic smile.

"Until you want it to be anything else then sure. I'd love to."
