Fall of the Mist

I Don't own any of Rick Riordans works. This is just a Fanfic

8:00 am Tuesday

Percy POV:

I have been told before that silence can be more terrifying than noise and that's never truer in the case of New York. I should know I have experienced it once before and that's a memory I hope to never have to live through again. Unfortunately, since I'm a demigod I have no such luck. On the day your world ended the first thing I heard was an absolute defining silence. The kind that you can feel on the back of your skin. The kind that comes right before chaos.

Then the screaming started like everyone on the streets of New York collectively decided that it was a good idea to perform ear splitting screams. I rushed over to the window and nearly ripped it off the hinges with my demigod strength in my hurried attempt to see what was wrong. Down on the streets there were hundreds of mortals running for there lives from what looked like a couple of cyclopia.

"Percy what's wrong? What's with all the screaming?" asked mom from the doorway holding Estelle.

"Get Estelle's diaper bag ready mom. I'll get the important documents we are leaving." I answered years of leading demigods taking charge. Maybe due to how I responded or her trust in me she complied without question. Within minutes we had everything packed and ready to go. We kept everything we needed for emergencies packed just in case I accidentally brought home a monster.

"Mom, get Estelle to the roof I'm going to warn the neighbors."

"Okay, Percy. Be safe." She replied again without protest knowing what I would do regardless.

The next couple of minutes I spent gathering as many neighbors as possible to bring them to the roof. Considering most if not all had already noticed the situation they were in, even if they had not yet understood, it didn't take too much work. By the time I reached the roof majority of the apartment complex had already gathered looking panicked and probably would have already left to run with the mob if it wasn't for my reputation as 'Sally's amazing son' and my serious expression. With a wave of my hand, I conjured a mist wall to form a rainbow. I could feel the shocked expressions of my neighbors bored down on me.

"Oh, Fleecy do me a solid and show Nico di Angelo at Camp-Half Blood" I chanted into the rainbow as I threw in the usual drachma. With a shimmer the small, skinny, and overly pale form of the ghost king materialized before my eyes.

"Hey, Percy are you okay? What's with the crowd behind you?" asked Nico in an almost scarily happy tone, for the son of death, as he stared behind me at the crowd of mortals.

"Hey, Nico something has happened to the mist and the mortals have started seeing monsters. I don't know how many there are in New York but its chaos over here." I responded by cutting to the chase.

"Okay, Percy I'll inform Camp and we will begin to mobilize the demigods." Nico responded as his face formed into a more serious and determined look.

"Can I ask you a favor? I can't let anything happen to mom or anyone else. Can you, Matt and Calantha help them get out of here? I know I'm asking for a lot." I asked with a pleading look in my eyes.

Nico was about to protest until he saw mom holding Estelle trying to calm the now freaking out mortals.

"Okay, Percy we will be there in a second." Answered Nico as he swiped through the message.

"What was that?"

"Who was he?"

"What's going on?"

The mortals around me were getting to their breaking point. Each of them clutching what little valuables they were able to grab in such a short amount of time. The noise and chaos around us made the illusion that the world was ending. Off in the distance I could already see fires breaking out as the sounds of what sounded like hundreds of monsters roaring across the city. A cold wrath started to flow through my body as it began to make my hands shake. They were attacking my city. My home. I know what I must do. As mom looked into my eyes, I saw that she understood what I was thinking.

"No, Percy. Listen to me. I need you to not play the hero. No one not even a demigod could fight through that many monsters." She protested with tears forming in her eyes.

"Paul is still out there. I can't leave him." I answered back convinced now at my decision.

"Okay, but don't you dare die on me. You hear me? I will not be attending your funeral for at least another 10 years got it?" she answered back knowing there was no convincing me.

"Percy, I don't think we can take everybody. There are too many of them." The familiar voice of Matt, one of the only children of Thanatos strong enough to shadow travel, as he sounded panicked.

"He is right even with your dog we would have to leave behind at least 6 of them." Added Calantha, the strongest child of Hecate regarding shadow travel, counting all the mortals present.

"Don't include me in that count. I'm staying behind so you can take one extra." I told them as I tried to formulate a plan to get everyone out. Only if Annabeth wasn't at her father's house, she is better at this than I am.

"Percy did the lady just say some of us will have to stay behind?" asked Daniel, my middle-aged neighbor to my right who is ex-military.

"Yes, mortal. We can't take everyone. Five of you will have to stay behind with Percy. I trust him with my life and if anyone can save you guys it will be him." Nico answered staring the man in the eyes.

"Okay, everyone Nico, Calantha, and Matt can't take everyone. 5 of you will have to stay behind." I shouted at everyone gathered on the roof. Soon 5 volunteers were decided on after much arguing, a lot of persuading and one demonstration from Nico. After dividing everyone into four groups I called Mrs. Oleary.

"What the f**ck is that!" screamed a mother holding her child.

"It's just my dog she will be taking some of you." I answered off handedly as I was trying to calm the overly excited Mrs. O'Leary down. My comment only served to scare the mortals even further. Nonetheless we managed to get everyone with their designated child of darkness.

With a flash of darkness and a chill through the air each of the mortals was transported to the nearest demigod safe house.

"Okay, we are going to make our way down to my apartment. Then we are going to make our way to Goode High School. It should be a decent spot to defend." I told the remaining 5 mortals.

"Shouldn't we attempt to get out of the city?" someone asked.

"No. I have fought these things before. I also have a backup that should relieve us soon. I don't know if you guys will have to fight but it's starting to look that way. I have weapons in my apartment that my fiancée's father has given us that should give you guys a fighting chance."

"What are you? Who are you? What are these things?" asked another brave face.

"I am Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon the ruler of the sea, and I have killed more monsters than any other demigod alive today." I answered trying to instill confidence. Just as someone else was about to ask another question, what sounded like thousands of demonic pigeons began to swarm around the building we were in.

"Stymphalian birds. Get inside now!" I ordered the mortals which prompted everyone to book it towards the door down into the apartment complex. Just as I slammed the door right after the last person hundreds of metal beaks pierced into the metal door. We made the trek down to my mom's apartment in silence. Once we got there, I ruffled through the box Mr. Chase gave to mom once he heard she was expecting. Two twin revolvers with celestial bronze handles, one sawed-off shotgun, and a rifle.

"Who are the best shots? I have 4 guns and there are five of you." I informed the 5 balls of nerves behind me. After a quick discussion it was decided Mark, the youngest of us at only 18, would go without a gun and instead use my spare knife. As we left my mom's apartment, I slipped a speaker into my pocket.

"Hey, Mark can you look up the most cursed and annoying song you can think of and play it on this speaker?" I asked him as we walked together each of the people wielding guns looked as if they were one startled response away from blasting a hole in the wall.

"What?" asked Mark with a blank confused look in his eyes. "Shouldn't we be quite?"

"Those birds hate annoying songs." Was my only response before I threw open the door to the street.

Marks POV:

Percy was insane. He has gone mental. No doubt about it. He was asking me to use music to defeat f**cking demon birds. He seemed serious and for some reason I believed him. So here I was ready to play heavy metal at full blast. We are going to die. Why did I volunteer to go on this suicidal mission? Once we got to the door, I had the playlist ready to go. This was able to give my half-deaf grandpa a headache. I think it might work on birds as well. If Percy doesn't belong in an asylum that is. With a bang Percy threw open the door and the black cloud of demonic feathers came souring right at us and with one prayer to whatever god was listening I pressed play.

"Built from blind faith…" screamed the speaker as I began to form a headache. Which seemed to also be the case as the birds began to flap disorient like.

"Passed down from self-induced fantasy…" Percy stared up at the swirly mass of feathers and metal beaks. Gone was the 19-year-old acquired teen I and the rest of the apartment complex was used to and replaced was a determined warrior. The light in his eyes gone and replaced with a swirling storm of blue, green and was that gold?

"Turn a page to justify…" The ground began to shake and shift as the concrete started to crack. Was Percy causing this?

"Conjuring power - it opens wide…" The ground finally burst upward as thousands of gallons of sewage sprang free from there pipe prison forming into a funnel of death, destruction, and drowning birds.

"On your seventh day…" I turned off the music knowing nothing could of survived the funnel of death. Gold dust and sewage water soaked everything besides our rag tag group. Looking around at the sheer destruction that was caused by Percy I noticed why he got so angry. Two kids ages 4 and 10 were scared out of their minds staring at Percy as two unrecognizable bodies lay on the street ripped apart by hundreds of little beaks which I assumed to be their parents. Percy slowly walked to the car attempting not to scare the kids and clearly failing. After attempting to convince the kids to open the door he finally ripped the door off the hinges.

Hurrying over, I picked up the crying child and took the other one by hand. Speaking softly "It's going to be okay Percy over here is going to protect you. He apparently has magical powers." Glancing back at Percy I could no longer see the demon that had slaughtered thousands of bird's minutes prior.

"Come on." was Percy's only response as he looked dejected.

Close to an hour later, six demonic dogs, a cyclops, two giants and a swarm of insects later we finally made it to Goode Highschool. By the time we neared the high school we had formed into a small group of 14 survivors. As we neared the entrance, I noticed that there were kids looking out each of the windows with makeshift weapons of sling shots, pencils, and heavy objects to chuck and drop at enemy monsters. The doors were boarded-up with random objects such as desks, tables, chairs, etc.

"Perceus Jackson, we are back at were it all began." I voice spoke behind us.
