Chapter 1: "Prelude to the Continuum Conundrum"
South Town, off the coast of Southern California, Summer 1998.
Kyo Kusanagi was walking hand-in-hand with his special lady friend Yuri Sakazaki on a clear sunny Saturday. Flanking the couple were their teammates – On Kyo's side were electric playboy Benimaru Nikaido and giant Judoka Goro Daimon, and on Yuri's side were kickboxing barkeep King and fiery, sultry ninja girl Mai Shiranui. The group was laughing heartily at recollecting the events of the 1997 King of Fighters tournament. That was a really rough time for all of them – An evil mystical serpent entity known as Orochi took over the tournament and tried to suck the world into a sinister blackhole, something reminiscent of a specifically dark fighting game called Mortal Kombat. Nonetheless, Japan Team, Women Fighters Team, and the Art of Fighting Team collaborated alongside Chizuru Kagura, Iori Yagami, and feisty newcomer Shingo Yabuki, a young Japanese high schooler who was then in his sophomore year, to thwart Orochi's dimensional domination once and for all.
That year also marked something quite tragic for Kyo, all the more. After defeating Orochi, he came home to his apartment on the coast of Santa Marina. Upon reaching home, he checked his fax machine to find a disheartening letter from his (now former) girlfriend Yuki Kushinada, back home in Osaka. She had written to him about not being able to bear being the partner of a fighter, a lifestyle akin to being a soldier in an army sent to fight on a faraway land. Moreover, she made a huge note that she had found somebody else, a university student named Naoto Hamada who's studying Information Technology (IT) at Osaka Institute of Technology.
Angrily, Kyo screamed at the top of his lungs and cried his heart out. Why would such a sweet girl like Yuki do such a thing? She could've made the effort to fly out to California and wait to tell him personally about her troubles and updates from back home.
It was bittersweet like the proverb, "You win some, you lose some." Kyo won a great battle but he lost his first girl in the process. He drowned his sorrows in sake and ramen at a Japanese restaurant a couple of blocks away called The Shogunate. Little did he know that his batch mates from his own team and some others (along with a meek, little Karate girl) were waiting for him the third time he stopped by, the third night after returning to his home away from home.
That third celebratory evening, he entered the restaurant to find other fighters, those he deemed his lifelong friends from a few tournaments way back, waiting for him (with the exception of Yuri who was a really close childhood friend of his from way back, which not everybody knew until lately). Yuri, King, Mai, Benimaru, Daimon, Ryo Sakazaki (Yuri's older brother and sole heir to the Kyokugenryu style), Terry Bogard, and Joe Higashi were there. Andy Bogard, Mai's crush, had gone off to Taiwan to train in the mountains while Robert, who was once Yuri's subject of affection (and has since become a big brother of sorts alongside Ryo, instead), tended to his luxury car business establishments in Barcelona, Spain, and Milan, Italy. British band Breathe's "All This I Should Have Known" began to play in the background when the entire gang sprang of their reserved giant table and happily screamed, "SURPRISE!" as soon as Kyo entered.
Kyo was good friends with the manager, Itaro Okubo, who accepted the gang's request for a grand party in the restaurant, provided they collectively paid $1,000 for it (with unlimited food and drinks on top of having the place for an entire day, topped off with a beautiful view of the beach from the outer rear). Itaro, a middle-aged former lightweight boxing champion, executive chef, and restaurateur in his mid-50s (who's also a practitioner of Kendo, Judo, Boxing, and Shorinji Kempo in his spare time), was the first to approach Kyo and shake his hand for a job well done with defeating Orochi, a gesture visually resonating like a cool uncle would bestow to a beloved nephew (as he had considered Kyo as family). "Congratulations, Kid! You deserve all the love in the world!" Itaro mused to his honorary "nephew." "Thanks, Itaro-San!" Kyo expressed his gratitude. Itaro then extended his hand towards the rest of the gang who gave Kyo a hearty hug amid the continued whistles and hoots, all to cheer him up after hearing the news of his overwhelming breakup with Yuki.
Yuri especially rushed towards Kyo, leapt in front of him, wrapped her legs around around his back, and hugged him the tightest. She then kissed him on the cheek and bid him, "Congratulations, Handsome!" as everyone else clapped and hooted at the pair. Kyo hugged her back and reveled at the scent of her cherry blossom perfume. "Thanks, Purrty Lady!" He smiled as he returned her bit of affection.
Yuri continued, "And, I'm sorry about Yuki. I know how much you cared about her."
"I know. At least, I have you...and the entire gang here," Kyo whispered as he gave Yuri a quick peck on the cheek and another one on the forehead. Everybody else cheered again upon seeing his affectionate display towards the Kyokugen Karate Princess.
They broke off the embrace as Yuri tugged Kyo's hand and the pair walked over to their compatriots to begin the celebration feast.
Itaro went into the kitchen to have his cooks and waiters bring out the food. "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang played on the restaurant stereo system to break off the somewhat melancholy mood surrounding the Prince (not a Scion anymore) of Flames and turn it into a livelier, happier one.
