Chapter 1

Adrift

Try to remember, focus….focus. The need was all consuming. If he could move, the man would reach out and grasp the fleeting memories, desperately pluck and retrieve with the same urgency one might grasp a severed appendage. Instead he dug his fingernails into his clammy palms. He almost had it, what was it? He opened his eyes searching for clues but only the void of space and twinkling stars was all he could see out the viewport. What could he still remember other than his name, Alex? Worry suddenly shrouded his mind. Would he eventually lose that too? He inhaled and exhaled creating frost on the chilled viewport. He could see the slowly forming layer of frost spreading on the pristine glass.

He averted his eyes, he couldn't look at his panicked expression in the dark reflection any longer. Instead he resigned himself to watching the blinking panel that displayed his vitals. Along the zig zagging patterns of his heart beat and the pulsing numerical readouts on screen was the message that spelled his doom. [Cryo Sleep Failure Exit Pod Immediately]. Oh he could exit immediately he mused to himself. He could simply pull the release latch and end his predicament in explosive decompression. The alternative was to let the malfunctioning cryo sequence run its course as it wiped both his consciousness and memory. He swiped away the readout on the screen contemptuously for the navigation controls. He had to set a course for somewhere, anywhere with the pods limited capabilities. The frost was now creeping up his fingertips as he typed. There was only a single neighboring planet, Cerinia. Sounds like a hospitable place, he thought as he set the pods course for the planet. Maybe this was for the best he thought as he laid his head back, eyes closed. A new planet, a fresh start given courteously from amnesia. The frost was now spreading across his face, unconsciousness was sure to follow now. He wouldn't let the thought go, he kept repeating it up until he was dragged into the cold dark abyss. Alex…Alex….my name is Alex.
