Okay, guys, this happened in a conversation with Naito Writer. We got to talking about Nessa's instant popularity following her reveal during the E3 demo for Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. When we came up with this idea, we were talking about how this could be, as far as I know, the first to feature Nessa paired up with a certain protagonist that we all know is now the Alola League Champion. I decided to give her a different look from her appearance in the games just for her vacation.
By the way, Ash, Nessa, and Ash's classmates are 18 in this. There is a reason you'll see later. They will also be OOC as well, especially Ash and a certain someone from Kalos.
DISCLAIMER: Nintendo and Game Freak own Pokémon. If I did, I'd retain the animation style used in the XY series and Serena and Dawn would still be on the main cast.
Hearts from Afar Entwined
In the Alola Region, the sun was doing its job of making the day nice and bright. As the locals know, the entire region, most particularly Hau'oli City on Melemele Island, was a tourist destination if ever there was one. Nice, sunny, and not a rain cloud in sight, it was a perfect time for business for the locals and relaxation for everyone. In fact, one girl was there to kick back and relax as well, enjoying the weather, which was different from her home region. She had dark skin and wore a blue and white bleach-pattern tank top, a pair of white short shorts, and blue sandals. Her eyes were a cerulean blue, as were the highlights in her brown hair. "Ah, time to relax," she said to herself. "I can't even remember the last time I've had a break."
"Well, cutie," said a male voice. "If you want to feel good, how about we go to my room?"
"If you want to keep your pride and manhood intact, I suggest you go away." The guy, not wanting to get humiliated, immediately left her alone, feeling that with an attitude like that, she could immediately wipe the floor with him in a battle. The girl was about to settle back in, but she then looked to see a battle happening. The two contestants: Ash Ketchum and his friendly rival Kiawe. While her gut instinct told her that it was a practice battle, she wanted to watch. Ash was using a bird-like Pokémon with red, grey, yellow, and black feathers and yellow narrow eyes while Kiawe used a tortoise-like Pokémon with red, peach, and yellow on its body, including the spikes on its shell. "Two Fire-types," the girl said to herself. "This should be good."
"Alright, Ash!" Kiawe exclaimed. "Get ready! Turtonator, Flamethrower!"
"Talonflame, dodge and use Razor Wind!" The bird, Talonflame, dodged the Flamethrower, made its wings glow white, and fired white arc blasts at Turtonator.
"Tough little bird, isn't it? Turtonator, Dragon Tail!" Turtonator's tail turned green as it used the attack to try and hit Talonflame, who was too fast for it.
"Alright, Talonflame, use Brave Bird!" As Talonflame headed towards Turtonator, the latter turned around, much to Ash's shock. "Talonflame, pull up!" Cancelling out the 'Brave Bird', Talonflame did as told and narrowly avoided the spikes. "Phew! That was close," Ash said, taking a deep breath.
"You might've been better off with your Charizard! At least he'd have a type advantage!" Kiawe exclaimed.
"Right. Talonflame, use Razor Wind to kick up the sand!" Talonflame sent blasts from its wings to cause a dust cloud around Kiawe and Turtonator. "Now, Talonflame! Use Brave Bird!" To the shock of Kiawe and Turtonator, the latter was hit with enough force to knock it on its back, the spikes on its back causing an explosion. When the dust cleared, Turtonator was out cold.
"Rest up, pal," Kiawe said, returning Turtonator to its Poké Ball. "Alright. I'll say it. Talonflame's too fast."
"Haha. Told you," Ash chuckled out as Talonflame landed on his wrist and Pikachu jumped on his shoulder. "Talonflame was my second catch in the Kalos region. I figured that it would enjoy being away from Professor Oak's lab for a bit."
"Professor Oak?" the girl asked herself before getting up from her towel. "The guy using the Talonflame must be from Kanto." She then got the attention of the two battlers. "Sorry to eavesdrop, but that battle caught my attention. That was really impressive."
"Thank you. You can probably tell, but Kiawe and I practice quite a lot outside. Usually, it's at the Pokémon School."
"This time around, we were seeing if we could go without using our Z-Moves," said Kiawe
"That's awesome," the girl said. "I heard about Z-Moves. If I recall right, they're common in the Alola region."
"That's right. Oh, before we forget, I'm Ash. I come from Pallet Town in the Kanto region. And these are Pikachu and Talonflame."
"I'm Kiawe, and the Pokémon I was just using was Turtonator. I live on Akala Island, which is the next one over."
"It's nice to meet both of you. My name's Nessa. I'm the Water-type Gym Leader in Hulbury in the Galar region."
"Galar region?" Ash asked.
"I've never heard of that one," said Kiawe.
"I can't say I'm surprised," said the Gym Leader. "I've heard of the Kalos region's runner-up, but I've never seen reports of you in my region. Still, now that I have your name, Ash, I'm a fan. You should've won that one."
"Yeah, I guess I counted on Greninja a little too much," said the Kanto trainer. "My mistake was not having Charizard with me."
"Clearly, you didn't need him this time around," Kiawe said, getting Nessa's attention. "Ash is way too humble. He's the Alola Champion now."
"What!?" she asked, shocked that she didn't hear the news. Ash put one arm over her shoulder and a hand over her mouth to keep her quiet.
"Shh! Be quiet!" he hissed. "I'd rather not attract that kind of attention."
"Pika!" Pikachu chimed in, agreeing with his trainer.
"S-Sorry." Kiawe took notice of the blush that was on Nessa's face. "It was just a shock to me, that's all. If my friend knew, she never told me."
"It's okay."
"Still, now that I know, I believe the Champion of Alola deserves to see what the Galar region has to offer. How about a one-on-one battle? Since I'm not on Gym Leader duty right now, you can decide where to have it."
"Okay…" They saw Ash ponder for a bit before he remembered a location. "How does Poni Island sound?"
"Good idea," said Kiawe. "That way, you won't attract that much attention aside from Hapu. Besides, you never know what she has in store."
The two trainers helped Nessa gather her stuff and took her to Poni Island, the smallest of the four islands in Alola. They found a clearing that was perfect for the battle. Ash, knowing that Kiawe had called Professor Kukui, had decided to wait for the rest of their class to arrive. Nessa put her thumbs and index fingers together in the 'picture' pose to look at the scenery, even catching a glimpse of Ash and Pikachu stretching. She knew Ash was smart enough not to use Talonflame against a Water-type Gym Leader but wondered why he would go with Pikachu. "Ash, this place is picturesque," she said. "A perfect battleground."
"Thanks," said the Kanto trainer. "It looks like our audience is here too." They looked and saw Professors Kukui and Burnet, Mallow, Lana, Lillie, Sophocles, and Gladion arrive. "Hey, guys."
"I see you made a new friend, Ash," Gladion said. Mallow saw how good Nessa looked, which didn't sit well for her, knowing Ash's loyalty to Serena. "Care to introduce us?"
"Guys, this is Nessa, the Water-type Gym Leader from Galar."
"Water-type?" Lana asked. "This should be good, especially if she's enough to rival Misty."
"We'll see," said Nessa. "Is Misty good?"
"Considering she's the Cerulean City Gym Leader…" Ash said, giving Nessa a clue as to how tough Misty was.
"It sounds like she'd give me a run for my money if I were to visit her. Since we're not at my Gym, I can't go full-power. This will be a one-on-one, though."
"Sounds good to me. Are you ready, Pikachu?"
"Pika!" Pikachu exclaimed, pumping his fist before getting ready for battle.
"I figured you would go with Pikachu." Nessa then held a Poké Ball and tossed it into the air. "Let's introduce ourselves, Drednaw!" Out from the Poké Ball came a light blue Pokémon with a tan belly, a brown upper shell, and a yellow jaw and horn.
"OKAY, TIME FOR ME TO DO WHAT I DO!" said a voice. RotomDex floated up and gave Ash the info he needed. "DREDNAW, THE BITE POKÉMON. A WATER/ROCK TYPE. DREDNAW TEND TO GET VERY AGGRESSIVE, CAUSING INEXPERIENCED TRAINERS TO RELEASE IT INTO THE WILD." After hearing the info from Rotom, Ash had a good look at Nessa, who grinned and winked at him, and got a good idea of how strong she really was.
"She's that good, huh?" Ash asked. "Then this will be fun."
"You bet," said Nessa, who prepared to give a command. "Drednaw, use Headbutt!" Drednaw charged for Pikachu, lowering its head.
"Pikachu, dodge and use Iron Tail!" At Ash's command, Pikachu dodged and covered his tail in a steel coating before slamming down on Drednaw, all of which surprised Nessa.
"Are you okay, Drednaw?" The Water-type gave its Trainer a nod. "Good, then use Razor Shell!" Drednaw sent pieces of its shell toward Pikachu, who kept dodging a few until he was hit in the middle of the air by one. Luckily, since it was a Water-type move, Pikachu wasn't affected that badly.
"How are you holding up, Pikachu?" Ash asked.
"Pika! Pikachu!" exclaimed the Mouse Pokémon.
"That's good. I think it's time we showed Nessa what we can really do! Use Electro-Web!" Pikachu fired an electric web from its tail, but Nessa had a counter in mind.
"Drednaw, use Bite to get rid of the Electro-Web!" she ordered. Drednaw did just that, dispelling Pikachu's attack. This shocked Ash, Pikachu, and their friends.
"She's incredible," said Lillie.
"I agree," Lana added.
"Same here," said Ash. "It's been a while since I last battled a Gym Leader and actually feel like I am. Nessa's amazing."
"Don't go falling in love now, Ash!" Mallow exclaimed. "Remember who your girlfriend is!"
"Don't worry, Mallow. I admire Nessa for her abilities as a Gym Leader, but I know I still belong to Serena."
"Serena…?" Nessa wondered, hearing the conversation.
"Anyway, Pikachu, use Quick Attack and Iron Tail!" Ash ordered, shocking Nessa. Pikachu charged at Drednaw at full speed and hit it with its Iron Tail again.
"Drednaw, use Bite!" Drednaw did as ordered and bit Pikachu by the tail, a mistake on its part. "Gotcha!"
"Bad move there. Pikachu, Thunderbolt!" Pikachu had gathered quite a bit of electricity and unleashed its signature move, electrocuting Drednaw until it was knocked out.
"Drednaw is unable to battle!" Kiawe exclaimed. "Pikachu is the winner, which means the victory goes to Ash!"
"It's okay, Drednaw," Nessa said as she returned her Pokémon to its Poké Ball. "You did your best. Now, rest up. That was a good battle, Ash."
"I know," said the Kanto trainer. "You're good, Nessa. In fact, I'd like to battle you again sometime."
"You should visit the Galar Region then, mate. My Gym is in Hulbury. Now, you mentioned a girl named Serena. Do you mean the Pokémon Coordinator and Performer from Kalos?"
"Yeah, I do. You know about her?"
"She and two Coordinators from the Sinnoh Region came to Galar on a tour, showing what Pokémon Contests were about. The Sinnoh Coordinators were a girl with long blue hair and a girl with short red hair."
"I know those two. Dawn and her friendly rival Zoey. Last I checked, they were going through Hoenn while I was going through the Unova Region."
"I actually met all three of them. Very beautiful, especially Serena. By the way, she figured I would get the chance to meet you since you battle Gym Leaders. She wanted me to give you a message."
"A message?" The dark-skinned beauty grinned and kissed Ash on the lips, much to everyone's shock. After a while, they separated due to a need to breathe. Mallow was angry until she saw that Nessa gave Ash a note from Serena.

Dawn, Zoey, and I got to meet the Gym Leaders at the Galar Region and they are all nice people, especially the Hulbury Gym Leader, who I asked to deliver this letter to you. You have had several fans here since you and Alain squared off at the Lumiose Conference Finals, especially her and the Fighting-type Gym Leader at Stow-on-Side. "I assure you that it's not," said Nessa. "Serena herself handed me the letter." Mallow, still suspicious, went away to make a call. While that was going on, Ash and Nessa's stomachs could be heard, the latter having a faint blush on her face. "I guess I worked up an appetite."
"Same here," said Ash. "Good thing Seafolk Village isn't too far from here."
After a short while, the group had gotten to Seafolk Village, where Ash and Nessa were downing their food like there's no tomorrow. Mallow had rejoined them, having confirmed that Serena had indeed wrote the letter. Kiawe, Sophocles, Lana, and Lillie were staring at the pair with wide eyes. While it came as no surprise with Ash, they were shocked with Nessa. Professors Kukui and Burnet were smiling at them as they gobbled down their food. "I don't think I've seen anyone eat near as much as those two," said the waitress.
"That's nothing," Mallow said. "Ash eats at a faster rate at my family's restaurant. And he packs away more too." This shocked the waitress, who saw that Ash and Nessa were stuffed full.
"Wow..." Kiawe said. "I guess she was cut from the same cloth as Ash."
"Looks like it," said Sophocles.
"So, Ash, is there anything else you do besides learning new battling methods?" Nessa asked.
"Well, as with anyone else, we eat, sleep, train, and hang out," answered Ash.
"Sounds great. Say, are you up for that tomorrow? I wouldn't mind it one bit." Ash saw the affectionate look that his potential lover was giving him.
"Sure thing. If you have the time, I can show you around each of the islands."
"Now that is an offer I cannot refuse."
After a while, they got back to Melemele Island. The professors went back to their house while Sophocles was back at his place and Kiawe flew on his Charizard back to Akala Island. Lillie rode back to her house with her butler Hobbes and Lana went back to her house to keep her sisters out of trouble, leaving Ash with Mallow and Nessa. Ash, sensing the disdain Mallow had for the Hulbury Gym Leader, grew nervous at his friend's expression. "Hey, are you doing okay, Mallow?" he asked.
"I'm doing fine, Ash," she said with a scowl on her face. "After all, why would I care that Serena basically allowed you to kiss a total stranger when Lillie, Lana, and I were available for you to sleep with at any time?"
"You mean you...?" Mallow's glare told Ash the answer to his question.
"Ash, you don't know what kind of crowd she runs with. What if you get involved in that kind of trouble? What will you do?"
"I know what you mean. But when Nessa and I battled, I could tell that, even though she couldn't go to full strength, she is definitely the real deal, a bonafide Gym Leader. She even trained a Pokémon that's extremely difficult to train. If I do get into a bit of trouble, though..."
"You know I'll always be there to bail you out. Another thing you should consider is the fact that she could have other lovers and could be trying to trap you into becoming one." This got Ash to get a good look at Nessa, unsure if Mallow was right or not. "You can do what you want, Ash. Just be careful, okay? I know you trust Serena's judgement, but even she doesn't know what the real Nessa's like. What we're seeing might be a façade or it might be the real thing. We never know." What they didn't know was that Nessa was listening, a saddened expression on her face because of Mallow's accusations.
"Look, if it makes you feel better, Mallow, I'll be careful," Ash said before they heard a thump on the ground. They saw Nessa on her hands and knees, her shoulders shaking and tears running down her face. Ash glared at Mallow, who realized her mistake. "Are you okay, Nessa?" he asked.
"Ash, Mallow, has anyone ever said any rumors about you two?" she asked.
"They often say that my family's restaurant must be hiding a dark secret because my family and I keep smiling," she answered. "Of course, my mom would always want us to smile, but those rumors hurt."
"What about you, Ash?"
"I'm sure people say bad things about me all the time," he answered. "Anytime that happens, though, no matter how bad those words are, I just brush it off. It's mainly because no matter what anybody says about me, I know that they don't know me. If there's anybody that does, it's usually those that I've either battled or journeyed with. This especially goes for Serena, Mallow and the rest of our classmates, and the rest of my friends. Just ask Misty or Pewter City's former Gym Leader Brock." This explanation put a smile of admiration on Nessa's face.
"I'm...I'm sorry. I didn't mean to stop us abruptly. It's just that, in addition to being a Gym Leader, I'm also a model. Because of that, I've heard people say that I sleep around. I know it's not true, but it hurts hearing those words, especially from a friend. See, I've never slept with anybody. Never had the time." Ash helped Nessa to her feet and supported her until she could stand by herself again. This brought back memories of when he helped Serena at Professor Oak's Summer Camp. They got to the Aina Cafeteria, where her dad and brother were waiting for Mallow. After apologizing to Nessa, Mallow hugged Ash and kissed his cheek before entering her house, leaving the other two and Pikachu outside. The two of them headed to the hotel where Nessa was staying at, making sure not to hold hands so as to avoid suspicion. They get to Nessa's hotel room and she opened the door, taking Ash and Pikachu inside. "Well, here we are," she said. "Quite spacious, isn't it?"
"Yeah," Ash said as he looked around.
"Listen, I'm going to take a shower. Why don't you and Pikachu make yourselves at home?"
