Inheritance
Chapter 1: Destiny Awaits
1-A. The letter and numeral were writ large on the door, beckoning. Satisfaction filled him, just like it had when he'd received his official acceptance to UA. He straightened himself up a little, opened the door, and took another step towards his future as the number one hero in the world.
Really though, it was just another classroom, another place to excel and prove himself better. Only a pair of students had arrived before him, a girl with a large ponytail in the back of the room and a guy with glasses in the column closest to the door. The guy with glasses was eyeing him critically, but the girl with the ponytail seemed engrossed in organizing her desk. He decided to ignore both of them as he headed for his seat.
It was right next to the windows and happened to be in the same column as the girl with the ponytail. At least it'd give him something to look at if the normal courses got boring. He wouldn't be slacking, but he had been the smartest student in Yavi Middle School and probably smarter than some of the teachers there too.
Other students began to filter in. A guy with red hair, a girl with pink skin, a blonde boy who took the seat closest to the door. All the extras who would fill up the lower ranks of the classroom. Some of them might be competition, but he doubted many would prove a challenge. He leaned back in his chair and put his feet up.
Glasses decided to make an issue of that, marching over and badgering him about propriety and respect and horseshit like that.
Then the door opened and Glasses looked up and immediately stiffened. "It's her." The words barely left his mouth before he dropped their little tiff like a hot rock to march over to a bespectacled blonde as she stepped into the room, babbling about her being a superior student and other crap all the while.
Whoever she was, she didn't look that impressive. She also didn't seem very comfortable with the attention, blushing as he played her up. In the process he managed to create a dam at the doorway, blocking not just her but the people behind her from entering.
So much for propriety and respect.
Just as he finished up another girl, this one with an ugly bowl cut, caught her attention. He was quickly losing interest until their teacher decided to make himself known, causing the four students still out of their seats to back up into the classroom. Not that it mattered, because they were sent to the locker rooms a moment later to get changed.
When they finally got to the testing ground the brunette with the tragic haircut asked about orientation and they all received a brief lecture for it before the teacher finally got to the meat of it. He wanted to know what they were like off the leash, something he could appreciate. It was a chance to show the extras what he was made of, let them know their place, but also let him judge the competition.
"Melissa, you managed to destroy the most robots during the entrance exam." The teacher said, "What was your farthest distance throw with a softball when you were in Junior high?"
Bakugo tried his best to dredge up his own best as she dithered before spouting off what was clearly a guess. He doubted their teacher really wanted obscure details about their abilities though, and he was proven right when he asked her to try throwing the ball with her quirk.
Bad enough that she sent the damn ball flying, the extras had to fuck everything up by not taking things seriously. He grit his teeth, wondering if their teacher would really expel someone on their first day, but the smug bastard looked almost thrilled at the prospect.
It didn't matter though. It sure as fuck wasn't going to be him.
He glowered at the leader board. Sixth place. Well within the top ten. Not the top five though, which was fucking frustrating. He'd never failed to make the top spot at Yavi in anything, but looking around at the extras he still allowed himself to feel a certain amount of satisfaction. Off to his side a guy with stupid-looking purple hair was breathing a sigh of relief as Aizawa explained that no one would be expelled after all.
Whoever it was, they weren't competition. The ones above him might prove to be a challenge though. Ponytail was 'apologizing' for not letting everyone know that she had figured out the whole expulsion threat had been nothing but a ruse, but he still had his doubts.
She was probably one of the recommendation students. There were supposed to be two of them though, so he should figure out who the other one was. They'd probably be just as arrogant as her. Second place was out though. The girl who lit up like a defective Christmas tree every time she used her quirk had gone through the exams. Third place, Glasses, had clearly been in the same exam as her. So had bowl cut, but she was in ninth place, so she really didn't matter.
That left bird head and arms. Either way, getting in on a recommendation and then failing to place in the top three would be embarrassing. And it'd only be more embarrassing if it was someone even lower down the list. He scanned the crowd for anybody looking particularly disappointed. It could be the bird guy, it would take him time to find his tells. And arms was wearing a mask, the cheap bastard.
He let out a tch of annoyance and went back to looking at the names so he could associate them with a face and a quirk. Nobody in the bottom half was likely to matter much, though he was still more than a little surprised that the tail guy had managed to get into the top ten. It was only near the end that a name caught his attention. Their teacher had called all of them out by name, but the board showed full names. And one of them was sticking out to him.
Midoriya Izuku.
Why did that name sound familiar though? He looked around, spotting the messy green hair he associated with the name. Green hair. Freckles. Midoriya Izuku. His family name hadn't drawn attention by itself, it was only when he saw the last name that he thought he remembered anything. Why would he remember the name but not the person?
And more importantly, why did the name make him feel anxious?
Author's Notes: So. Another series. I am so very sorry. But I had an idea, and I am running with it. I am trying to finish off some of my older series, and getting back to writing them if not finish them. This one is going to have different layers. Expect some twists and turns. I've already hinted at a number of things that would only become obvious with time. Feel free to guess!
Also, I now have a section in Darklogic's Discord Server: /25BTet3 join up and you can see what's coming up, the ideas I'm tossing around, and chat if you're interested.
