'This isn't a bad computer.' Naruto thought as he sat behind his desk in his cubicle. Checking the screen on his workstation the blond turned it on and fiddled with the contrast. "That's better," Naruto muttered at the light being emitted. "Harvey wants you in his office." Naruto looked up from his screen and was met by Donna who seemed very pacey right now.
"Morning." Naruto greeted the redhead "He said right now, so skip the pleasantries." Donna replied as she walked away, Naruto quickly got up from his seat, and followed the personal assistant, fixing the button on the sleeve of his suit the blond caught up with Donna. "Ms. Donna." the blond spoke up as Donna paced faster much to Naruto's surprise. Also upping his speed the blond caught up again.
"Ms. Donna. I just want to say I'm sorry if I was rude during my interview." the blond stated as Donna turned to him. "Who says you did something wrong?"
"Well..." the blond looked forward and noticed they were briskly passing by all the offices. "We're going at a high speed and you seem to avoid me." Donna chuckled at that. "You think I'm avoiding you. Wow, aren't you self-centered." they finally got to her desk, which had the blond stopping at the entrance. "You didn't look like the type," she concluded.
"Well, I'm not it's just." Naruto tried to come up with the words as Donna sat down on her chair and looked at him. "What I did the last time we met made me feel a bit bad. So I was thinking what can I do for you so that there's no bad blood?" Donna hearing this got a grin. "You want to do something for forgiveness?" the blond nodded as Donna's grin grew bigger. "Okay, it's simple." she took out a notepad and pen. "You are to bring coffee for Harvey, for the next month." she wrote down the order and handed it to him.
"Deal." Naruto said reading the order "Oh yeah, he wants it from Starbucks, especially on Mondays so make sure its not from the sidewalk, alright?" the blond nodded. "So, what about the money? Should I collect it from you?" Donna laughed "And here you said you wanted my forgiveness."
"That one's coming from your pocket sunshine." Donna added as Naruto sighed "And this is one of the highest orders in the establishment."
"Oh so you know the order?"
"Yeah, I worked there when I needed cash in college."
"Huh, the more you know." Donna finished. At that moment, Harvey had arrived to the desk and had heard his PA's last statement. "The more you know what?" he asked "Turns out our little associate here worked as a barista."
"Really?" Harvey turned to Naruto looking a bit surprised who smiled brightly. Harvey seeing this chuckled "Yeah, I kinda see it now." he commented. "Anyway," he clicked his fingers and pointed at the blond. "You with me, we gotta talk." the man stated as Naruto followed him into his office.
"Take a pen and paper," Harvey stated signaling for the blond to take some from his desk, doing so Naruto watched as Harvey spoke. "Write this down. Specter 101, Rule number 1, never lie to a client unless you think you can get away with it." Harvey stated as Naruto raised an eyebrow at the rule. "Why would you advise me to lie to a client-" the blond was cut by the man's voice. "No, disrupting the teacher, now write it down." Naruto hearing this just went with it and wrote down the rule.
"Now rule number 2, only lie to your client if you know that you're in the good graces of your boss if she's informed of your actions." he added as Naruto wrote down the second rule. "Wait you lied to your client and got caught didn't you?" the blond spoke up as Harvey shrugged his shoulders. "You catch on quick, that's good." he spoke up "But yeah, I just got realed by my boss and it almost had me get put in front of BAR."
"Tough. What are you going to do now?"
"Be 'straight as an arrow' she said."
"So how are you going to do that?"
"Make sure my interests with the other clients aren't noticed, next time."
"Wouldn't that just make things worse since you have so much to lose?"
"Well I won't be changing my ways so she can get used to me doing it like this-" Harvey had an epiphany which could make his ridicule earlier not make his promotion to Senior Partner taken away. Walking out of his office, the man was so caught up with his idea that he didn't hear his associate shouting out "Where are you going?" as he disappeared into the hallway.
"Here's what's going to happen." Harvey spoke up as he entered Jessica's office getting her attention from some documents she was reading.
You're going to give me back my promotion, and that's the last were going to be talking about this."
"And why's that?" she asked "Because I'll continue with my way of working and it'll lead to this firm losing a lot of its clients since I brought in a lot of them."
"Which would lead to this firm losing money and ending up bankrupt, which would lead to you losing your job."
Harvey nodded his head at the statement "True, but what's stopping me from joining the likes of Wakefield-Cady or even Rick Peterson to just fish out every one of them from the pond of NYC?" he mimicked himself holding a fishing rod. "And if you'd do that Harvey, it'll end up with me and you in front of the Ethics board."
"I don't think you will." he replied with a smirk as he put his hands down.
"And why not?"
"Since you were obligated to notify them. The second I lied to Gerald but you didn't. You put me in front of the board right now, you'll have a seat beside me." he concluded, Jessica hearing this took a deep breath in, as she turned to the view of the city from her office. "Alright fine, I'll give your promotion, back." Harvey celebrated inside hearing that statement.
"But you have to do something for me." she went over to the files beside the window. "Anything." Harvey replied as he watched Jessica go through the files. Seeing the document she wanted she slid it out the pack. "Ah, (1)pro bono." she held the document. "Anything but that." Harvey complained "Harvey, pro bono cases show how we as a firm care about the public and not about money."
"I'm not saying we shouldn't do them. I'm just saying, I shouldn't do them." he pointed at himself "Well if you take this case it'll show me you care more than just yourself." Jessica mocked as she pointed at him. Harvey seeing this sighed in defeat, taking the file from Jessica he looked bored.
"You will do this yourself, so no passing it off." she stated "Absolutely." Harvey replied.
"Congrats kid." Harvey walked into his office as Naruto sat on one of the lounge chairs. "Your first case." he tossed the document to the blond who caught it, looking surprised. "Already?"
"You seem surprised." Harvey commented "A bit, it's kind of shocking that I still haven't caught my bearings of the place."
"Well get caught up fast." Harvey replied as Naruto looked at the document. "Huh...pro bono. Lucky me."
"What do you hate them as well?"
"No it's just if I perform poorly, someone will go haywire on social media and damage the firm's image."
"Well let's hope you actually know what you're doing." Harvey replied as he sat down behind his desk. "Sexual harassment." Naruto read the details from the document. "Great." he said sarcastically. "What's great about sexual harrassment? You aren't saying I hired a pedo did you?" Harvey stated as Naruto raised his hands in defense. "No that's not what I mean, I can assure you I can keep my hands to myself." Harvey seeing this chuckled at how quick he was to answering.
"Relax kid, no need to be jumpy. The fact you're even red right now tells me you're nervous. Why are you nervous?"
"First day at work, first case, first conversation with my boss as being part of the workforce, which I was groomed to be in after 18 years. A lot of pressure is being put on me today."
"Well allow me to introduce you to the show, slugger. Where you work your butt off only to be given a piece of the initial amount you were signed to, courtesy of the IRS."
"I miss being a teen." the blond dropped his head.
"Me and you both." Harvey added "Though seriously, what's great about sexual harassment?" over the intercom, Donna spoke up much to Naruto's surprise. The blond looked over to Harvey who shrugged his shoulders. "Answer the question, what's great about it?"
"Nothing it's just emotions get thrown into this and it could lead to a connection with the client, that would easily cloud their lawyer's judgment."
"And you don't want these type of cases because?" Donna asked as Harvey also wanted to know the answer. "I have a soft heart, okay. It wouldn't take long for me to feel pity for someone." the blond replied as he looked up to Harvey. "I know for a lawyer it's a weakness but I can assure you it won't be a problem."
"Who says it's a weakness?" Donna said "Feeling things is what separates us humans from those books you read in school. If I know Harvey, which I do." the man rolled his eyes at the comment. "He'd be against it, but that doesn't mean you should do that to. If you can't control you emotions, it's fine. Though I'm not saying be emotionally attached to every client. Sometimes you'll see ones like this so if need to deal with ones' of these, it's fine to show feeling." Donna concluded as Naruto looked out the window over to Donna's desk, who looked back and gave the blond a thumbs up.
"Thanks, Donna." the blond replied "I'll take your advice to heart." the redhead nodded at the answer.
"Alright, professor Donna are you done giving the kid a pep talk?" Harvey spoke up "Since I need him to get out of my office, he's already polluting my air."
"No I think I still have more things to teach."
"Not going to happen," Harvey concluded as he turned off the intercom. "For how long did you keep the intercom on?" Naruto questioned "Irrelevant. Anyway I need you to make sure you don't tell anyone I gave you this case." Harvey said as Naruto looked at the document and back to him. "Oh I get it...your boss gave you this case, didn't she?"
"Maybe, maybe not. Why does it matter?"
"No your secret is fine with me, it's just I wonder if she picked out sexual harassment because she wanted you to develop better feelings for people seeing you lied to your client earlier." Harvey hearing this got a smirk. "You worked as a barista, have a good memory, and are a softie. What more traits do you have?"
"Is that rhetorical or should I answer?"
"Just go meet the client already." Naruto got up from the chair and walked to the door. "You won't be disappointed, sir," Naruto stated as Harvey raised his hand. "Do me a favour and call me Harvey, kid. You constantly calling me sir, makes me feel old." Naruto nodded at that and closed the door. "I second that motion." he turned around to see Donna looking at him. "What's wrong with being called Ms.?" the blond asked "You're jinxing me from getting married," she replied.
"That's a superstition." Naruto replied, "Even if it is, I'd like better chances of knowing I won't die alone."
"I never thought of you, as the superstitious type." Naruto said, "And I never thought of you as a guy who procrastinates during work." Donna smiled as Naruto watched she shooed him off.
The blond found himself walking in a park not far from his workplace, having set up a meeting point with his client she said they'd meet here, walking on the sidewalk he looked for a woman that fit the description he was given. 'About middle age and brunette.' the blond thought as he scanned all the women that passed by. Looking out onto one of the benches that rested underneath some of the trees he noticed a woman who fit the description, approaching the person he thought to be his client he spoke up.
"Excuse me, Ms," Naruto spoke up getting the woman's attention from a book she was reading. "Are you Nancy by any chance?" the woman looked at the blond and analyzed him looking surprised. "Naruto Uzumaki?"
"Yes, that's me." the blond stated. "You're a kid." she added looking confused "I prefer young adult," he replied with a smile as Nancy smiled "It's just your so skinny." she pointed out as Naruto shrugged his shoulder. "It hasn't been long since I've been off the noodles and stale bread diet." the blond replied "Noodles and bread? Wait you've just graduated from college?" the blond nodded.
"Makes sense why you look like a spring chicken, you were fed bones for the past four years. Here take my grapes." she offered her batch. "Thank you," the blond replied as he took a seat across her. "So." the blond began as he took a few grapes. "How's the weather?" he asked "It's calm and cool." Nancy commented "It's one of the things I like about this season. Makes the air feel different, you know?"
"I get what you're explaining," he replied as he finished eating the grapes. "So what's your story?" he asked "Well...it started two years ago. I was a stay-at-home mom, to my son Freddie." she pointed to her son, making the blond turn his head to see the kid. "He's got your hair." the blond commented "Thank you." she replied and continued "One day we were at little league."
"What position does he play?" he asked
"First baseman." she replied "He must be slow." Naruto commented as Nancy chuckled "Yeah, he gets that from his dad. Though he sure loves the sport, that day he was mad about the fact he couldn't play with the older kids." Naruto chuckled at that "He must be really good, isn't he?"
"He's above average, but anyway, it was during the third inning of the game that when I got a call. My husband ha been in a car accident, and he was gone just like that."
"I'm sorry to hear that."
"It's fine." she stated and continued "I did the best I could to stay afloat. I got a job as a secretary at Delvin McGregor and I did so well I got a promotion to being the secretary of the president, Charles Hunt." she explained as her demeanor went down.
"That's when...everything changed." she said in a low tone. "It's okay, just tell me what happened...I won't judge." the blond replied "He started asking me to stay late, order in dinners together, stuff like that. Then one night he says if I sleep with him, he'll take care of me in the firm and if I don't he'll fire me."
"He wanted you to choose between your dignity and your career. That's a nasty ultimatum." the blond commented "Tell me about it."
"What did you choose?"
"I chose my dignity and went to human resources. They said they investigated the case and couldn't find anything to support my claim. Two months later, I was fired for poor job performance."
'Makes sense...seeing as the president is their boss, they wouldn't want to name someone with out proof. Unless he offered you in front of a camera, there's not much they'd do.' the blond thought out the entire story. "They didn't even give me a letter of recommendation."
"That's brutal."
"The fact I wasn't even looking for a payoff makes me angry since all I wanted was for it to stop. Can you help me?"
"Yeah, I'll do my best." the blond replied.
Returning back to the office, Naruto was informed that Harvey wanted to see him. Heading to his office he was informed that the man was on a lunch break outside. Much to his surprise he was shocked to see him by a hot dog stand.
"You look surprised." Harvey spoke up as he stood in line. "Yeah I thought you'd be eating lunch at one of those fancy places." Naruto replied as Harvey chuckled. "I love giving back to the community." the man retorted as he bought his frankfurter.
"So, do you have an update for me?"
"Yeah. The defense sent in the files, but I think they didn't send them because I said so."
"Good, you atleast you caught that one." Harvey got his frankfurter, Naruto being behind him was about to buy his when the man spoke up. "What are you doing?" Harvey asked as the blond looked at him. "Buying lunch."
"We don't have time for that come on." Harvey called him over "B-but I'm starving." he whinned. "You'll eat when the case is done, now let's go." Naruto clenching his stomach just sighed in defeat as he followed the older man. Walking into the office building they walked towards the elevators.
"So know you know where to look, what will you do?"
"I thought about impeaching but seeing as he's the CEO of the company...that's not going to happen."
"Do you have any other ideas?"
"Well I'm thinking since he's a man of power..." he began as they stood infront of the elevator. "...there's a chance that what occurred to the client, could've happened to another woman before or even after her."
"And let me guess you want to use those that were fired by the man to testify against him." the blond nodded "That's the plan but the problem is what if they don't want to do that? I wouldn't want to waste these (2)subpoena forms." the blond stated showing him the forms.
"Look kid, people will always be hard-headed, your job as a lawyer is to learn to sway people into favor, find a way to change their minds."
With the elevator arriving, the two got into it and went to their firm's floor. "By the way did you get her to sign the engagement letter?"
"Yes."
"Good, now I don't need to worry about the firm getting sued if you fumble this." Harvey stated as they met up with Donna who took out a card and handed it to Naruto. "What's this?" he asked "That's my suit guy." Harvey replied. "Go in and tell him I sent you."
"What do you want me to pick up your suit?"
"Nope, you're going there to get something for you."
"But I don't have any money to spend on a suit."
"Well find a way since people respond to how we dress, so like it or not this is what needs to be done." the blond hearing this nodded. "I'll see what I can do." he replied as he went away.
"Huh, look at you already caring about the things he wear. He's getting on your good side isn't he?" Donna asked with a smile as Harvey smirked "I don't know what you're talking about, I just want to make sure he's a good representation of myself."
"Ah huh...you know I can see that smile your hiding, right?"
"What smile?"
"You know the fact he's impressing you so far...you think we hit the lottery."
"We?"
"I am the one who pointed him out didn't I."
"Even if, who says I'm impressed."
"You're in denial."
"I don't know what you're talking about." Harvey ended the conversation as he walked away with a smirk.
The day had finally came to an end and Naruto was about to head over to his grandmother, having all of his things packed into his satchel bag, he got up and aimed for the exit. "Naruto." the blond heard his name called, turning around he saw it was the paralegal, Rachel.
"Where are you going?" she asked
"Home." the blond replied as she laughed "It's 6:30, and the fact your a rookie associate. Leaving this early wouldn't make you look good. The fact you think that in your first week you'd leave before 9:00 is laughable."
"Okay, but in my contract it said I'm required to be there between 9:00 in the morning and 6:00 in the evening."
"Well if I remember correctly, that's required, they never said it'd be your official time to leave."
"Okay, well thanks for informing me. I'll go back to my cubicle." Naruto walked passed her and was about to sit down. "Don't even bother, Louis is looking for you."
Sitting there in silence Naruto felt a bit uncomfortable since the man just looked at him. Keeping a smile on his face, he wanted to ask if he'd done something wrong, but he eventually spoke.
"I know you had orientation from Rachel, but I wanted to give you a special welcome from me."
"Well thank you sir-" Naruto was cut by him. "Don't cut me off, please." Louis spoke up still smiling. "Sorry."
"It's fine, as I was saying. I'm sort of the disciplinarian of the associates." at that time there was a knocking on the glass door. Naruto turning around noticed a man opening it, as Louis allowed him to enter. "You wanted to see me?" the man asked. "Yes, Naruto meet Gary Lipsky. He's one of our most promising associates from last year."
"Hi." the blond greeted man, who returned the gesture. "Gary, Ms. Pearson wanted me to ask, if you've completed the Petramco filing?"
"Ah, well you see my brother was in over the weekend, so I didn't really get to it." Gary replied "Look, I mean, Gary I've asked you for the third time now to do this."
"I'll get right on it." Gary replied as Louis chuckled "Look, Gary don't even bother, you're fired."
"What?" Gary stated confused "You can't fire me." he complained as the confusion swayed away. "Oh yes I can and I just did. Go pack up your things, don't you ever show your face in this place again." Louis concluded as Naruto watched in silence. "Hard luck, man." he told Gary who looked bewildered by the situation.
Feeling defeated the man got out the office, being left with Louis the blond watched as his smile returned. "See I arranged for you to see that, since we pay our associates very well, and provide the opportunity for unlimited advancement but in return we expect RESULTS." Louis shouted out the last words, looking at Naruto with daggers.
"Have I made myself clear?" the blond nodded. "Crystal." he replied as Louis smiled again. "Great, welcome to Pearson Hardman." he concluded as they then sat in silence.
"Can I go, now?" the blond asked "Yes, feel free to go back to work." getting up Naruto exited the man's office. 'Well he's weird.' he thought thinking of his assessment on Louis.
"You're thinking about how weird Louis is, aren't you." Naruto turned to his PA's desk to see an old lady. "Does he always do that?" he asked as he approached the lady's desk.
"With new, associates he does that but don't worry, Gary there works in the mail room. He just did that to scare you."
"Norma get in here!" over the intercom Louis could be heard shouting, Naruto turning back in his office, could see he was listening in through the intercom. "I think he caught you giving out his plan." Naruto stated as Norma sighed in defeat.
"Now he'll chew me up for a minute." she said as she got up and went to his office. "Good luck." the blond added as he watched her close the door.
'What a weird first day.' Naruto thought as he returned to his cubicle.
