The thing about living in a fallout shelter is that it sucks. We spent months living in that concrete coffin, reading all the books we brought in, all the comics, listened to all the songs we had, watched all the movies we could, but at least we were safe. Until that day happened.
Day 4
We were huddled up together in front of the monitor, Lori, Luan and the younger kids were asleep. It was hard making Lily sleep that night. And us the ones that can't sleep, sat there together near the middle support pole. Lynn was eating the leftovers from yesterday, they didn't eat much last night, and Luna was strumming her guitar, even with a bandaged hand she could play it. Luna was wearing a black My Chemical Romance sweater and dad's cargo pants that day, Lynn was wearing her jersey and a jacket over it, and I had a jacket on too, even though the shelter has a heater, today felt colder. We couldn't think of anything to do, so, we just sat there, doing whatever our idle hands could do. "Lynn, Linc, you guys have any requests?" She asked with a smile.
"Surprise us," Lynn replied as she puts the bag of mush down.
"The stage's your Lunes," I told her.
Just as she strummed the first chords to Hey Jude, the lights went out. "Shit," Lynn said as she stood up.
"What now?" Luna sighed as she stood up. "Lynn, wake them up, I'll check the hatch. Lincoln, you're with me," She said as she laid her guitar down and taking the revolver out.
I didn't ask, I just stood up, and followed behind her. As I followed her, I grabbed Lynn's hockey stick. If I'm gonna die today, I'm gonna die fighting, I thought to myself. Luna climbed up the ladder, and she looked through the small bulletproof windows.
"It's clear," Luna said. "What do we do now?" She asked.
"LUNA! Is it clear?" Lynn yelled.
Luna jumped down, and shoved the gun in her sweater pocket. "So far so good, I don't see any of them, snow's getting thick though,"
"That's good, I'm gonna check on Lisa and Lana, they said that they might be able to fix the generator," Lynn said. She turned her head, and she looked at me holding her hockey stick. "Keep it Linc, you're gonna need it." She patted my shoulder.
We need to get generator back up, we'll die if we don't. Well, die earlier.
The three of us walked to the back where Lana and Lisa were at, all of my sisters still had red eyes. I sighed. We just have to get through this.
"Lisa, what's wrong with the dang thing," Lynn asked, impatient.
"The battery's dead, let me just change it," Lisa sighed as she plugged in a new brick sized battery after taking out an old one. "With this thing, we can stay in this place for another 6 months... Not that we'll survive that long."
"Come on Lisa, we'll get through this," Lynn tried to cheer her up.
"We have 2 months, if we eat one meal a day, 3 if we decided to cannibalize each other," Lisa said coldly as she left. Leaving me, Lynn, Luna and Lana at the back alone.
"We'll make it right?" Lana asked, her eyes watering.
"We-we'll make it," Lynn said as she took her out of the room.
Morale was already extremely low, and it got lower when Lisa turned the monitor back on. Dad's and Leni's corpse are gone. "Where did they go?" that was the question that filled the room, and what followed it was crying, and sobbing. We were hopeless. "Fuck this!" Lori cussed as she climbed up the ladder and went out. We were too late. She had gotten out and closed the hatch. Luna followed suit, but she didn't get out, she just poked her head out of the hatch.
"LORI COME BACK!" We heard her yelled.
On the monitor we saw Lori barging inside our house through the back door. Luna yelled for her to come back. Then, five minutes later, we saw her. Lori walked out of the house with snacks. She jumped back inside and she opened a bag of chips up. Just as she was about to eat, Luna grabbed her by the collar and yelled into her face. "WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU DOING LORI?!" she screamed in anger. I saw Lori's face turned angry, but then it turned sad. I walked behind Lori, and I saw Luna's face red in anger and her eyes red in sorrow. "You could've died out there!" Luna slapped Lori hard.
"I'm... I'm sorry," Lori said weakly.
"We already lost Leni and mom and dad, why the fuck do you want to die so badly?" Luna cried as she buried her face into Lori's shoulder and hugging her tight.
Before we knew it, we were all crying on the floor, but it didn't last that long. After 4 bags of potato chips, 5 bars of chocolate, 2 packs of chocolate chip cookies and the entire first season of the Love Boat, we were smiling again, all of us. We sat there in front of the monitor, looking at the screen as Lana placed in the disc for the second season. It was fun. It was refreshing. I wish that it lasted forever. A little piece of heaven in the hell jigsaw set. I wish that it lasted forever.
