After the support session, Steve returned to the Avengers compound. He had officially retired as an Avenger as he felt there wasn't any need for Captain America anymore. Steve went upstairs where he heard Natasha in a conference call with Rhodey. Natasha hadn't noticed him and he decided not to interrupt.
"Will you find out where he's going next?" Natasha asked with a hint of desperation in her voice. Steve could tell she was asking about their friend Clint Barton who had travelled a dark path in the past five years.
"Nat..."
"Please."
"Okay." Replied Rhodey with obvious reluctance before cutting off his transmission.
Natasha started to cry into her prosthetic hand whilst trying to hold back her tears miserably when Steve decided to make his presence known.
"You know I'd offer to cook you dinner but you seem pretty miserable already."
"You here to do your laundry?" Natasha sarcastically asked whilst wiping her tears.
"And to see a friend."
"Clearly, your friend is fine."
Steve wanted Natasha to smile so he tried to change the subject.
"You know I saw a pod of whales when I was coming up the bridge."
"In the Hudson?"
"There's fewer ships, cleaner water-"
"You know, if you're about to tell me to look on the bright side. Um... I'm about you to hit you in the head with a peanut butter sandwich." Natasha interrupted with a small joking smile. Steve realising he was caught, smiled with her.
"Sorry. Force of habit." He admitted before sitting down opposite to her. "You know, I keep telling everybody they should move on and... grow. Some do. But not us."
"If I move on, who does this?"
"Maybe it doesn't need to be done."
Natasha leant back in her chair deep in her thoughts
"I used to have nothing. And then I got this. This job... this family. And I was... I was better because of it. And even though... they're gone... I'm still trying to be better."
"I think we both need to get a life."
"You first."
The two shared a soft and sad smile as camera footage from the compound entrance popped up in front of them.
"Oh! Hi. Hi! Is anyone home? This is Scott Lang. We met a few years ago, at the airport? In Germany? I got really big, and I had my mask on. You wouldn't recognize me."
"Is this an old message?" Steve asked in confusion
"It's the front gate." Responded an equally bewildered Natasha
"Ant-Man? Ant-Man, I know you know that. I need to talk to you guys." The figure on the screen continued.
Steve's mind was racing. People approaching the compound wasn't uncommon, but Scott Lang had been missing for the past five years.
