CHAPTER 12. THE MAGIC HOUR.
19:55
At the top of the mountain, she hadn't moved from there. Knowing that she had died along with possibly the entire town was not easy news to accept. She had been curled up with her head resting between her knees and her arms wrapped around her legs. She kept thinking about whether her friends, her sister, Aunt Antiope or the other people who had surely died. How go to see the comet at night had turned into a catastrophe? The worst would be having to relive that if the boy who was now in his body didn't do anything to stop it, if he knew what had happened.
She remembered him, the boy she had gone to see the day before was in her body. Maybe she could see him.
"Bruce" She said in a whisper.
With that in mind, she finally got up after hours and began to walk slowly. She hoped she could get downstairs and meet him in time. Fortune smiled on her when she heard the voice of her body.
"Diana!" It was what her voice screamed.
She was happy, but she wanted to see her body, because it would mean that she could finally see him.
"Bruce?!" She yelled, but as a question. Something inside her still wondered if it was real that she heard her name coming from her real body.
In another part of the mountain, he had heard the voice of his true body asking for him. Thus, he ran once more and finally came out on top. Anyone, in a normal situation, would have taken a break after all that effort, but the adrenaline for the situation that was about to happen in a few hours and the desire he had to see that girl were stronger, so he didn't think in that.
He ran a little on the circular top of the mountain, hoping to see her, but he didn't. So, he decided to call her again to get oriented.
"Diana?! You're here, right?! In my body?!" He asked quickly.
"Bruce?! Bruce, where are you?!" Was the response he received.
"That's Diana" He said to himself. So, he started running again. "I hear her, but I don't see her" He said as he kept running.
"Bruce, where are you?" She said in another part of the mountain, while walking. However, she was so desperate to meet him, and since she didn't see him, she began to run just like him, calling out his name again.
The two ran until they both heard a nearby sound, like footsteps from someone who was running next to them. So, they both stopped instantly, and got a little closer to where they thought they heard that sound.
The two kept getting closer, slowly, asking if the other was there. Getting no response, the two raised a hand and extended it, hoping they could touch the other. There was nothing.
They both sighed in disappointment that another chance to see each other had come to nothing again. It seemed that he wouldn't be able to tell her anything about his plan to save the town before the comet crashed, and she wouldn't be able to see him even after what had happened the day before, and she would most likely end up dying again.
Their thoughts were interrupted when the sun and its rays of light, which seemed to be an invisible barrier between the two of them, finally disappeared, because the day was over, but it wasn't night, not yet. They both knew what this was, she had learned this in class, while he knew what she meant when the little Donna had said it after returning from having placed the bottles of fermented alcohol on the altar of the god Cronus.
"The Magic Hour" He said.
"The Magic Hour" She said.
However, he was no longer in her body, and she was no longer in his body. The two of them were now back in their respective bodies. But, that wasn't the surprising thing, the surprising thing was that they had heard each other's voice, so they shook their heads slowly, they were afraid that the person they wanted so much to see was not there again.
To their surprise, they saw that they were face to face. For the first time, they were both together in one place.
He responded by letting out a small laugh. It felt good to see her in front of him, without him being in her body.
"Diana" He said very calmly.
In her case, it took her longer to say anything, since she still didn't believe that he was in front of her, and smiling at her.
"Bruce. Bruce, you're really here" She said, moving closer to him and placing her hands on his chest. She still wanted to make sure he was real. Tears were falling down her cheeks, but they were tears of joy. She would have reacted in a calmer way, but from the way he had acted the day before, she was more than happy that he had come to this place. "Bruce" She said, with a big smile on his face, accompanied by her tears.
"I came here for you" He told her, smiling slightly. "You wouldn't believe the path I had to travel to get here" He said, wanting to break the ice. Surprisingly, he felt more comfortable with her in just these seconds than he did with Miss Zatara.
After he told her this, it dawned on her that she might only be able to be with him for less than an hour. Considerable time had already passed. So, she wiped away her tears and wanted to know why he was there, in front of her.
"But… how come…? Why in that moment…?" She tried to tell him, but the excitement she had at seeing him in front of her was still getting to her.
"It's that I had to drink your fermented alcohol" He replied, knowing what she meant when she was asking.
To his surprise, this caused her excitement at seeing him to be replaced by puzzlement, which was shown as she slowly took a few steps away from him. She had not expected that he had drunk the alcohol that she had prepared for the god Cronos, and she had not realized it because she was so surprised to be back in his body and wanted to know what he was doing there, that she did not notice that the bottle with her alcohol looked different from her sister's.
"Did you drink it?" She asked him slowly with her hands over her mouth.
This situation left him somewhat paralyzed. He didn't know whether to say yes with pride, or just say it once and for all. This had gone from being a joyous moment to an awkward one.
"You are a pervert!" She yelled at him with a lot of anger, now without her hands on her mouth.
"What?!" He asked her. He didn't understand what she meant by that.
"Yes, that's what I said. You were touching my breasts, weren't you?" She asked, with an angry face, and crossing her arms around her breasts for protection.
Realizing what she was talking about, he decided to hide it.
"And why do you assure that?" He asked putting his hands behind his back.
"Because Donna saw you" She replied, still angry.
With that, he saw there was no point in denying it, but he could soften it up a bit. Again, he was very wrong.
"Well, I did. I could not avoid it. But it was only once" He said, rubbing his hands on his back.
"Oh yeah. Just once" She said, shaking her head a little. She didn't believe what he told her. "The number of times is not the problem!" She told him, still upset by what he had done, and well, partly also by how he had treated her the day before.
"I'm sorry. I'm really sorry" He said, putting his hands out in front of her, almost as if he was going to kneel. He never did this with anyone, not even his parents, but she seemed to be the only person he would do that for.
She seemed to relax after hearing his apology, but what caught her attention the most was seeing that, on his wrist, he had her red ribbon, the braided thread she had made to put it in her hair, and the one she had given him the day before on the monorail.
"Hey, that's..." She said taking him by the wrist to see the braided thread that he used as a bracelet.
He saw what she meant, so he quickly untied the braided thread and began to unravel it from his wrist.
"Oh, yes. Diana, every time we switched bodies, you would go three years into the future and I would go three years into the past. Therefore, you went to see me when I didn't know you. That's why I acted like that" He managed to say this in time for when he finished unraveling the thread. "Here you have it" He told her for her to take it. "I had it for three years, and now it's yours again. I think it's better you have it" He told her with another smile.
She took it and wrapped it around her head, tying it above her left ear. She no longer had long hair, for now, so it was best to wear it that way.
"What do you think?" She asked him. She expected to look good.
"Hey, it doesn't look bad on you" He said, looking away.
"What a liar you are" She said, annoyed again.
"Sorry" He said, looking into her eyes again.
"Why do you always act like this?" She asked annoyed, looking away from him for a few seconds, before starting to laugh.
He didn't know what to answer. This whole meeting had been very strange, and she had proven to be more peculiar than he already thought she was. But, this did not matter to him and he also began to laugh.
Their joyful laughter rang out for a few minutes at the top of the mountain, until he remembered why he had come to that place. So, he stopped laughing and grabbed her by the shoulders.
"Listen, Diana. You have to do something very important" Was what he told her before explaining the entire plan. Barry would use explosives in the substation so that the electricity would go out, only the emergency electricity would remain, which would power the radio station, which Iris would operate in order to make the evacuation announcement. While her two friends were doing this, she had to go with the Mayor Princeton to convince him to evacuate the entire town before the comet impacts, because, he had already tried and it didn't work out. He added to tell Barry that he was sorry he lost his bike because he used it to get to the top of the mountain, but ended up crashing somewhere on the way up the hill.
After he told her his plan, she looked away and was able to see Comet Petropoulos. The sight looked so pretty, before the great catastrophe began.
"It's getting closer" She said, a little ansious.
"Don't worry, Diana. You still have time" He reassured her.
"Yes, I will do everything possible to save the town" She said. In doing so, she also managed to see that dusk was near. "Seems like magic hour almost…" She said, but couldn't finish the sentence. She didn't want this to happen.
"...Ends." He finished the sentence for her. Like her, he didn't want this to end, but luckily he had a backup plan. "Hey, Diana" He said looking at her, while he took his marker out of his pocket, which luckily was there. "So that we don't forget when we wake up..." He told her as he took her right hand and wrote on her palm. "…Let's write our name on the other. Take" He said this last giving her the marker.
She just nodded her head and showed him her big smile. Therefore, she took his hand, but wanted a better position.
"Hey, Bruce, move over here a bit" She asked. He obeyed her and shifted a bit, his hand now near the edge. Positioned correctly, she began to write the first letter of her name, but only managed to write a straight line before the marker fell off and rolled down the mountain, making it impossible for him to reach it and write the name of her for himself.
The magic hour was over.
"Diana?" He asked, hoping she was still there. "Diana? Are you there?" He asked again, but he only heard the silence of the night. "I couldn't tell you that, it doesn't matter how much time passes or where you are. Someday, I will find you again" He said while looking at the line that she managed to draw. "It's okay, I'll remember you" He said to calm down. "Diana, Diana, Diana. Your name is Diana. Your name is…" He kept saying it, hoping he could memorize it, but he couldn't remember her name again.
"No!" He yelled, being totally sad. He couldn't remember her anymore. To make matters worse, he also couldn't remember the purpose of this trip he had taken two days ago. "What am I doing here?" He asked himself. Fortunately, he managed to remember the purpose, for a few moments. "I came…I came here to see her. To save her. I wanted her to live. Who was? Who? Who did I come to see? Someone important. Someone I would never want to forget. But who was it? Who? Who? What's your name?!" He yelled last.
Unfortunately, the silence wouldn't give him an answer, so he just stared at the big lake that formed an 8, frustrated that he didn't know that girl's name again.
The worst thing was that now, he would only be able to see her if she managed to evacuate the town in time before the comet impacts.
XXX
When he disappeared in front of her, with all the pain in the world for leaving him, since she didn't want to, she started running with all her strenghts. She wanted to check if he was still there, but she couldn't waste a single second. The comet was getting closer, and she needed to use all the time she had to evacuate the town before the impact. Also, unlike him, she did have his name written on the palm of her right hand, and she was sure she would be able to remember his name, no matter what.
"Bruce. Bruce. Bruce. Don't worry. I'll remember you" She thought to herself as she ran down the path. "Bruce. Bruce. Bruce. Your name is… Bruce!" She kept saying.
She was very optimistic about this aspect, but now, she hoped that the plan he had devised to evacuate the town would work once she returned to it. If she failed, she would never see him again.
