Hi, still two more for Season 3 but we are officially only eight chapters left of this story. Season 4 is going to be short and wild as a lot of it isn't going to be in this story (AKA Sam leaving and Will-depending)
There will be a second part that follows this...eventually. Each series should cover about seven chapters some chapters several episodes. Flashbacks included when needed.
Also I do not do Private Messaging anymore, any questions stick them in a review and I will get back to you next chapter note.
Also please be aware of a bit of a time jump between these chapters.
Also after much thought and consideration I have decided not to include Mandy in this story. She's there for like one Season and misses half of the episode and while she was an okay character played by a very good actress her disappearance and everything that follows is just too hard to write. So no Mandy. Ever.
And a couple of the episodes are mixed around here but please keep that in mind.
There will be a bit of a time jump through Season 3 as we near to the end, I predict maybe two more chapters of the Season 3 arc. As I always sat this story is not and will never be all episode specific.

Chapter 20-Everytime She Smiles
The lives of the Cregg/Zeigler clan are thrown into chaos when CJ gets a death threat and is assigned a Secret Service officer who Jake is pretty sure he knows from somewhere.
"Your getting Secret Service Protection"
"Mr President"
"Forgive me Mr President you wanted to see me?"
CJ turned to see Toby standing by the door.
"CJ's getting Secret Service protection"
"No I'm not"
"Yes you are"
"Because of a death threat?"
"You got a death threat?"
She shushed Toby impatiently.
"I did not…look Ron I work in the White House and I get a lot of flack for it, after the President I am the one who is the most visible but I don't…I mean why are we blowing something like this out of proportion?"
"That's why I asked the President to bring Toby in here. We went through the file attached to the next email with a fine tooth comb and we couldn't trace any of the photos where they were coming from etc, but we did find out that there is a common theme to this threat Miss Cregg"
"Which means what?"
Looking back when the eight years of Jed Barlett's terms was over she and Toby would look back at this moment and she would realise that Toby already knew what was coming next.
The photo's were spread out on the table.
"That's Jake" CJ said as if speaking the obvious.
It was as well.
Spread out on the table was photos of her son. Leaving her home, leaving school sunglasses perched on his head, sat in some coffee shop with his friends, doing the normal day to day things, there was one where Jake had gone out to get the milk and the photographer must have been less than three feet away from him.
For a second she stared at the photo of her son even as Ron spoke to Toby. She couldn't take her eyes of Jake who was laughing in one of the photos at something Harrison, she was guessing, was saying off camera. Her baby boy who had no idea that some lunatic stalker murder (or whatever) after his mother was less than three feet away taking photos of him.
She had never sat down with Jake about security, even after the shooting she had never sat down with him and talked about security concerns. She had gone from the shooting to the MS scandal to one thing after another and while she had spoken to Jake about what to do if approached by the press she had never spoken to him about what was going to happen if his mother and/or father was ever targeted.
Ron passed her the form. She sighed it.
And that was how she met Simon Donavon.
"Jesus Christ Mom!"
"Jake"
"I mean seriously Jesus Christ. Dad I'm sorry but…Mom…someone wants to kill you?"
She caught Toby's eye as Jake flopped down on the couch. Yeah she could concede he was right about the point that there was no way this conversation was going to be good. Telling your sixteen—nearly seventeen year old that you were being hunted down by a lunatic fringe wasn't something that you did every day and it was often never good.
"Yes" she said finally. "But Jake I don't want you to worry—"
"Yeah more chance of the Republicans being the pro-choice party"
Here Toby snorted before he could stop himself.
"It doesn't impact your day to day life at all" she said quietly. "I won't have it impact your day to day life at all. I just wanted you to know that obviously I will have added security and…Jake your Dad and I have been talking and we would like you to stay at your Dad's full time until this thing is resolved"
He blinked momentarily taken off guard and she caught Toby's eye. Her son was the product of two people who did spin for a living, any other time in which he was speechless would have been a moment of great amusement for them both but this time it was not.
This time it was a different kettle of fish all together.
Jake stared at her for a second and then. "You want me to run to Dad's and let you stare down the mad lunatic fringe stalker gunman all by your lonesome?"
"I wont be on my lonesome" she said quoting him. "I will have Simon Donavon, my secret service protection guy who is very keen to meet you so he doesn't accidently shoot you"
"Very reassuring Mom"
"It's not just for your protection" Toby said quietly. "This place is gonna be crawling with agents, your Mom is gonna be driven everywhere she's gonna have to house them and feed them…you wont have any kind of privacy and if you want friends round they have to consider them security threats. You've only ever seen this kind of thing from the outside son, trust me living in it is a different thing all together. It might be best if you come live with me"
Carefully neither one of them mentioned that the stalker had included no photo's of Toby. If there was no photo's of Toby then maybe Jake living with Toby would keep him safe. Maybe…it was a word she was beginning to hate but if it kept her baby boy safe she would tattoo it on her forehead forevermore.
"So you want me to leave you alone with the Secret Service so that you don't get shot?"
"I could order you to do it"
Jake opened her mouth and they both knew that he was going to say something along the lines of—try—but before she could snap at her son Toby cut across.
"Don't argue" he said firmly. "We can do this the easy way or the hard way Jacob. And we don't want to do this the hard way, this is not about running or leaving your Mom. I want you safe, so does she. This is how she doesn't do something stupid worrying about you"
For a second the two men in her life stared at each other and suddenly her son's resemblance to Toby was suddenly striking.
"Okay" Jake said finally. "But I don't like it, I really don't like it Mom."
"Well" she said seeing the Presidents face when she tried to refute protection. "If it makes you feel any better I really don't like it either"
And that by the way was before she met Simon Donavon.
Sitting outside Miss Cregg's office was entertaining to say the least. Simon had to make it entertaining because if not he would drown in the mundane and when that happened chances are people got very dead. And Ron was not a fan of that and when Ron started bitching he tended to go into the next century. Seriously…Simon had known the man for fifteen years and he bitched better than a pre-teen girl. The shooting had been a black mark on all of them but for Ron it had been a stain that he was desperate to get rid of so much so that when Donnatella Moss had gotten her own death threat and Josh Lyman had come crashing down the stairs it had taken a very patient Gina to point out that they couldn't assign Miss Moss a seat in the bunker.
He sat there and eyed up the staff and realised that actually this was very entertaining. The Secret Service you learnt while working for them, was in fact a bunch of teenage girls when it came to gossip and they had more than their own few bets going on. The biggest one would be when Josh and Donna got their shit together and skipped off happily into the sunset and Simon watching them thought that his fifty bucks was quite safe because there was no sign of that ever happening soon, certainly not before Christmas which would kick Gina and Robbie out the pot.
The second ongoing bet was between Sam Seaborn and Ainsley Hayes. Simon liked Ainsley Hayes. She was whip smart and when he had seen her on Capital Beat destroying Sam he had thought she was very impressive. When she had been sent that dead plant and that note (gossip was a food supply the White House lived off) he had wanted to show those two lawyers the back end of his gun but he watched as Ainsley and Sam spoke in his office and he thought briefly that in a weeks time it would all be over and he would be twenty five down.
Damn Ron and his alibility to always guess when the Senior Staff were sleeping with each other. Twice now he had won the pot when those two from Legislative Affairs got together and when there was that rumour that Ed, Larry and Carol had all had a drunken moment the night of the Iowa Caucus.
He watched as the teenager stumbled into the bullpen looking exhausted and here Simon shifted. He knew who this teenager was. This was Jake Cregg-Zeigler.
This was the kid Simon had saved from the shooting.
He didn't remember much about that night, he should he knew that, his entire world was built on seeing a threat before it happened and it was the junior agent who saw it before the seasoned ones. He had watched as the President was surrounded, as Mr McGarry had been pushed to the floor, as the rest of the staff had scattered and as Gina had gotten the girl in the car and then he had been half aware of something or someone behind him and he had reacted pushing the two kids to the ground before he could do anything else. He didn't even know them, he knew that the press secretary had a son but the girl had been a last minute edition and he had not even thought before he had shoved two teenagers to the ground narrowly before they got hit with a bullet. He had barely had time to take out his gun and even now he didn't like to think about the fact that the night where he had saved two teenagers and then killed another.
"Hey"
"Hello"
Jake Cregg-Zeigler was watching him for a second.
"I know you"
"You do. I work for the President—"
"Not that"
"Oh"
There was a pause.
"You're the one looking after my Mom?"
"Yes"
There was another pause and Jake jerked his head at the door.
"She know? About…about the shooting"
"No" Simon said quietly. "I didn't tell her—did you?"
"No"
"Well…I'd appreciate it if you didn't. I don't like to talk about it you see. I don't…that was a hard night for us"
"Wasn't a brilliant night all round" the kid pointed out and Simon nodded thinking that actually he quite liked this kid despite everything. He was very nice even though he was wearing a Cowboys shirt.
"You a Cowboys fan?"
"My…girl…Anna…the one you…you know…she got me this…I think she thought the reactions were funny, you know…Josh, Sam and my Dad and even the President"
Considering Ron wouldn't have anything to do with the Lakers in the office and had more than once told Tim to get rid of his mug Simon could understand.
Jake dithered for a second and then.
"Thanks"
"For what?"
"You know what"
"Nah" Simon said stretching his legs and then deciding to stand up. "Nah you don't ever have to thank me for that. I did my job, nothing more, nothing less"
For a second the kid opened his mouth as if to say something and then.
"You…your good with Mom right? I mean…she's my Mom and…"
"I got your Mom's back"
He nodded again and then the door opened. Miss Cregg came out looking at the two of them and then sighed.
"Jake…Bonanza"
Simon rolled his eyes.
"What's Bonanza?"
"Oh dear God" he muttered under his breath. Ron was flinching wherever he was man had that theme song as a CD in his car.
"Well?" came a voice from behind them and Josh Lyman appeared with Sam Seaborn and Toby.
"Did you ask her?"
"Yes. Anna and I are going to the prom together"
"Aha! Told you my plan would work"
"You know what Josh I never had to bribe her. Nor charm her with American History Sam"
Ainsley Haynes and Donna Moss giggled from the corner. Simon wondered if the public knew that their senior civil servants were like a bunch of adult high school students. Maybe the Secret Service should do tours through here?
"You asked her?"
"No. She asked me. It's 2001 Dad, woman rule the world"
"That's my boy!"
"Nah Mrs B gave me that one"
Miss Cregg sighed.
"Bonanza I am taking my son for pizza"
"In my car"
"Cool" Jake said looking animated. "Can you show me some evasive moves that you do when you're under attack? I am taking my test in a few weeks"
"And you're planning to be attacked on the beltway?"
"Oh I don't know" Josh Lyman said suddenly. "When they start protesting at the geographic society…" he caught Seaborn's eye and they both grinned. Simon didn't get it.
"Come on" Miss Cregg said and Simon followed and he noticed out of the corner of his eye that he was not the only one admiring her ass.
Hmm…well…Mr Zeigler was entitled to look he supposed.
Ron would be very annoyed if he broke the man's arm just for that.
And there you go, hope you enjoyed that one, see you next time.
Next Chapter-Penultimate One of Season 3-Jake goes tux shopping, Toby is back from Finland. Ainsley and Sam are caught, and it's Jake's penultimate High School prom.
