a/n: At this time, I don't have any immediate interest in continuing this story. But I have included a rough outline of where the plot would've gone. Thank you for reading!
vpv 02
In the infirmary, Annie gets questioned by the nurse. instructor Shadis listens. At some point, the friends (Mina and possibly Mikasa) have to leave so Annie can get changed, Mina refuses because Annie is clearly in distress. Shadis concedes. Might cut this out.
Back at the boy's dorm. Hughes comes in, disheveled. No one notices at first because it's dark. He's fumbling around in the dark and someone lights a lamp (Armin?). Hughes's lack of empathy or remorse gives him away, as does the blood—keep this implicit.
Eren snaps and starts whaling on Hughes. Reiner and Jean have to pull him off before it gets even more violent. Bertholdt and Reiner insist that the law can deal with this lowlife piece of shit.
Reiner and Bertholdt visit Annie separately. There's conflict with warrior!Reiner, because Annie got in over her head and could've compromised the mission if she was discovered. She should've known better than to pick a fight she couldn't win.
This is not a well-received sentiment by Mina, though there's an implicit and ugly double-standard among the adults, including the nurses (though the crime is reprehensible, they treat Annie with less sympathy because she's the one who slacks off & humanity's survival is counting on every one of the cadets). Annie gets that Reiner in his fugue state, and this is a knee-jerk response, but this is the last thing she wants to hear right now. Mina starts laying into Reiner for being horrible, until Annie tells them both to shut up and let her rest.
Later in the scene, Eren gets sent to infirmary because he beat the shit out of Hughes and got bloodied himself. Eren doesn't blame Annie for what happened so much as his own inaction. Annie listens to him, then says it's not his fault. Eren is despondent and vengeful and will probably lose his composure.
No one's ever cried on her behalf, except Mina. Reiner and Bertholdt, they grieve because they are scared. She's been raised that crying never helps, it's a luxury she doesn't possess. Instead of allowing herself time for emotional processing, she's numb. She will eventually have to go through emotional processing but it'll be alone or it'll come out at an inopportune time.
Hughes is going to be tried. There are tons of witnesses to his conduct & Annie's state.
Eren states that he wants to help however he can. Annie looks at him, and says the best thing you can do for me right now is nothing. Shut up and listen to me. They're going to say it was my fault & you need to let them, because what image does this paint of the Training Corps? (She cannot be discovered at any cost). Basically echoing what Reiner said to her but in the interest of self-preservation.
Eren doesn't want to accept it, the same as being locked inside like cattle, but he's silent. He very well might take vengeance on Hughes the way he did Mikasa's traffickers.
Mikasa says if she needs anything, they're on her side, no matter what happens.
Running theme that the Paradisians are more overtly empathetic to Annie than her own comrades, and they have no clue what she really is. She cannot repent for her mission towards their destruction but she's touched and conflicted that anyone would care about her.
Bertholdt comes to visit. he says that Reiner didn't know how to deal with seeing her in such a weakened, hurt state. Reiner didn't want to reckon that she would be hurt like that, so he lashed out and said stuff, but he was talking about himself. It's implied Bertholdt thinks she shouldn't have picked that fight and there's a selfish part of him that's glad she wasn't discovered as a Titan, but primarily he wants to make sure she's OK (out of guilt for the former).
Reiner and Bertholdt are not as close to Annie in this story, partly because she won't let it happen. This circumstance might end up bringing them closer, but it doesn't make them friends in her view. Pessimistic angle.
Reiner stops by later. He doesn't apologize exactly, but says that he's been a real piece of shit to her and doesn't expect forgiveness. He admits he didn't know how to react, she's always been able to handle herself. He's ashamed she didn't feel she could trust him or Bertholdt to express her concerns about this guy (whereas Annie assumed she could handle herself), and that they let her get hurt because of it. Reiner isn't being entirely genuine about the reason he's apologizing (he blames himself) but that's subtextual.
Eren kills Hughes and makes it look like a training accident. Otherwise, Hughes would likely be put to death, by exile. The scandal would go through Wall Rose & Sina and people would talk about how these cadets are like animals. Nevertheless, the Training Corps cracks down hard on curfews. Eren never admits it to Annie, nor does she ask him if he did so. It's implied their friendship remains intact up until the FT Arc.
