The sound of her mate's footsteps faded quickly. When the only sound Alice heard was the constant beeping of the monitors connected to her, she closed her eyes and cried.

What started as silent tears quickly turned into painful sobs. Alice hardly noticed the alarm from her monitors as her heart rate increased.

"Alice, what happened? Is everything alright?"

Carlisle's voice seemed like a whisper compared to her own pulse throbbing in her ears. Everything around her spun and blurred as she began hyperventilating.

"Alice, you need to slow your breathing down. Slow, deep breaths."

"I… can't," she managed to gasp out between breaths.

She faintly heard Carlisle working around her, before her breathing finally started to slow.

"What… did…"

"I put a light sedative in your IV. You've torn your stitches. I'm going to have to pull them out and restitch your injury."

"I told… Jazz… to…" Alice found that moving her mouth was starting to become difficult.

"I know. You're alright. I'll call him when I'm done with your stitches."

"So tired," she mumbled.

"Go to sleep, dear. You're safe."

Alice let the sedative take over, slipping into unconsciousness.

Carlisle removed the bandage covering her side, now soaked in blood. He made quick work of the stitches and placed a new bandage over the wound.

Once he was finished, he sat in the chair his son had left by Alice's bedside. Pulling out his cell phone, Carlisle clicked on Jasper's name. He answered before the first ring had finished.

"What's wrong, Carlisle?"

"I had to sedate her and restitch the injury on her side. She was hyperventilating and her heart rate was elevated a great deal."

"Why? What happened?"

"She was upset. If I had to guess, it had something to do with telling you to leave."

Jasper was silent for a beat.

"Son?"

"I need to hunt. I'll be there soon."

Click.

Carlisle sighed, pocketing his cellphone.
