(The Change in the Game)
I don't own Bones, not even a little bit.
Oooooooooooooooo
The next day they caught a case and Booth didn't have time to tell the Deputy Director about his new relationship with his partner. Unconcerned for the moment, he arranged to pick up Brennan at the Lab and go to the crime scene from there. "Okay, just so you know, I was going to make an appointment to see Deputy Director Bishop but I can't see him until Thursday. The guy is in New York and he won't be back until Wednesday . . . Since we have this case, I'm going to wait until it's over and make an appointment to see him. We'll just keep doing what we've been doing and Cam can lump it. I'm not going to stage an argument with you just to make her happy."
"Yes, alright . . . She didn't say anything to me this morning." Brennan found Cam's concerns to be strange.
"Good, she'd better not rock our boat." The more Booth thought about it the more frustrated he was getting. "Let's handle this case like we always do and then I'll arrange to talk to Bishop."
It seemed like a reasonable plan for the moment. "Alright." Brennan sat back and stared at the passing scenery. She found that she was nervous and she needed to remain calm. She hadn't started her period yet and she found that a little disconcerting. If there was anything she could count on, it was the regularity of her periods. I need to buy a pregnancy test. I take birth control and most of the time Booth has used a condom when we have sex, but we have been a little impatient a few times and didn't bother with protection. That may have been a mistake.
Her silence made Booth believe that his partner was worried. "Hey Bones, we're fine. I may have made a big old mountain out of Cam's mole hill. She's not going to talk to anyone about us. She knows I don't like my privacy invaded. If she thinks we're having issues, she's going to let us work on it. She did her part by bringing it up and offering to help us, but I turned her down and she'll just let us deal with it for now . . . okay?"
"I understand." At the moment, Brennan wasn't too concerned about Cam. She had other issues that were more important to worry about. I'm not going to tell Booth until I'm certain.
Ooooooooooooo
Their murder victim was a man named Jeff Fowler. He had been a bowler on Max's bowling team 'The Thunder Balls' and Booth hoped that was just a coincidence. If Max had murdered the man, then he would make sure that Caroline didn't allow Brennan into the courthouse during her father's trial. There was no way he'd allow his partner to risk her freedom again. He couldn't go through that again.
Waiting for her father to arrive at the Royal Diner, Brennan voiced her fear. "I told Max after his trial that if he ever broke the law again, I would not help him to evade justice. Once was enough."
"Do you think you can do that?" A little nervous, Booth wanted to make sure that was still true. "Can you let him be tried for murder without your input?"
"Yes, I can." Brennan smiled at her partner. "I do think we're jumping the gun . . . gun?" She saw her mate nod his head and she smiled. "Just because Fowler was on Max's team, that doesn't mean my father killed the man . . . Yes, I don't believe in coincidence in a murder investigation, but as you've told me in the past, sometimes a banana is just a banana."
Their conversation was interrupted by Max who was rolling down the aisle in a wheelchair. Booth stood up, removed a chair from the table which allowed Max to roll his wheelchair next to the table.
"Dad, what happened to you?" She hadn't been aware that her father had been injured lately and found him sitting in a wheelchair to be disturbing.
The fact that Max was sitting in a wheelchair probably eliminated Max as a suspect and Booth knew that would ease Brennan's mind. "What did you do, fall off your bike?"
"Bed." Max was slightly embarrassed to admit that to his daughter and her partner. "And Rosemund was injured in the same physical event." The fact that he'd broke his hip was infuriating to him. Rosemund had broke up with him while he'd been in the hospital and he'd found that to be a pretty cold thing to do.
Booth prodded the older man for more information and found out Max's girlfriend was 36 years old. Booth found it bizarre that the man was dating someone about the same age as his daughter. Kind of pervy if you ask me.
After they arranged to join Max's bowling team so they could interrogate the bowlers in Max's league, Brennan reminded her partner that they might have to pick a fight during their undercover assignment so she could leave and she could be at the hospital when Angela had her baby.
While the partners were talking, Max found their behavior to be odd and a little concerning. "Something weird here. You're almost too polite to each other. What is it? You have a fight?"'
Annoyed, Booth wondered why being polite to his partner meant they'd been arguing? Why did Cam and Max think their partnership was in trouble? Whatever it was, he felt they were both full of shit. He was always polite to Brennan. Sure, they argued about things, but not excessively so. At least, he didn't think so.
"No, we're not fighting." Booth diverted their conversation back to the case, but he was still annoyed with the nonsense he was hearing from people that should know better.
Ooooooooooooooo
Their case was over and the murderer had been identified. The fact that Jeff Fowler had been an unsympathetic murder victim hadn't helped solve the case, but it was solved and they were free to leave the bowling alley.
Brennan wanted to take a walk before they drove over to the hospital to see Angela and Booth felt the evening was pleasant enough. As they walked, Booth held his partner's hand and felt that they should do that more often. Holding hands connected them in ways that gave them peace and a sense of belonging.
As they walked, they talked about the changes in their lives. Brennan was worried that too many things were changing between her and Booth and it might be too fast for comfort. Her pregnancy test had been positive and her gynecologist had confirmed it that afternoon. It worried her that Booth might not want another child. He had a son and the boy's mother used Parker as a bargaining chip when she wanted something from Booth. Brennan knew that Booth loved his son but was he ready to be a father again? All she could do was tell him about her pregnancy and see how he would react.
A call from Hodgins let them know they had to get to the hospital if they wanted to be there when the child was born. Brennan felt both excited and filled with dread. She did know that whatever happened, she was going to keep her baby. She just hoped Booth would accept the situation when she told him.
Oooooooooooo
Angela's son had arrived and Hodgins was ecstatic. The last few months had been filled with fear that their son was going to be born blind and thankfully that hadn't happened. Relieved, he was proud and happy and he wanted everyone to share in his joy. Brennan had visited the new mother and Angela had been tired but happy. Her son had been born with normal eyesight and the fear and dread she had felt before she had her son had been washed away. Her child had beat the odds and hadn't been born blind. Everything was going to be okay and Angela couldn't wait to continue her life.
Happy for her friend, Brennan had given her a stuffed rabbit for Michael Vincent. "It's from Booth too." She hadn't stayed long since Angela was tired and needed rest.
Once they left the hospital, they had driven over to the Founding Fathers but once they were there, the partners had decided to take another walk. Brennan was restless and she needed to talk to Booth away from the crowd they would have found at the bar. She didn't know how her partner was going to react to her news, but she knew she couldn't delay telling him. This affected him as well as her.
As they walked, Brennan talked about Angela and Hodgins. She wasn't sure how to bring up her news and she thought talking about the changes her friends were going through might allow her to talk about the changes she was about to undergo.
Booth sensed that Brennan was nervous about something and he hoped she wasn't having second thoughts about their relationship. Was she worried about their partnership? Had she changed her mind and decided that he wasn't what she was looking for in a relationship? Maybe she had decided that he wasn't worth the risk. He couldn't stand it anymore and had to ask. "What?" Please God, don't give me what I wanted then take it away from me. Please, don't do that.
"I'm pregnant . . . you're the father." She wasn't sure why she had broke the news to him that way, but she was nervous and she wanted to be as clear as possible.
Shocked, Booth stared at Brennan for a moment then smiled a brilliant smile at her. "Bones . . . we're going to be parents? . . . You and me?" He couldn't believe this was happening. He was with the woman he loved and they were going to have a baby. Moving closer to her, he embraced her and held her close against his body. "Thank you . . . thank you for letting me . . . thank you for letting me love you."
She had been uncertain how Booth was going to react when she told him, but she should have known that he would be happy. Her partner wore his heart on his sleeve and since they had become mates, he told her he loved her every day. "You're welcome . . . Are you happy?"
"Happy?" Booth wasn't sure if that covered how he felt. "I'm more than happy. I'm going to be a daddy again with you and I couldn't be happier if I tried. I love you, Bones."
"And I love you too, Booth." Brennan had never felt happier. She finally had found love and it had taken Booth to help her find it.
