Chapter 5
Jane entered quietly into the bedroom. She switched her clothes by PJs and slipped in bed spooning Maura again. Maura mumbled and sunk deep against her, and Jane smiled, contentedly.
She had dozed again, and she awoke when Maura shifted in her arms.
"Hey, Sleeping Beauty…" Jane rasped by the shell of Maura's ear, and felt her chuckle against her chest.
"Did you get some rest?" Maura asked, burying her face in Jane's chest.
"I slept. I woke up and had a late lunch with your mother. I came back to bed. And I slept again. I am still jetlagged, but I feel better."
"It is almost dinner time… I thought about joining mother if you are up to it."
"Of course."
They both got up and got ready for dinner. They walked hand in hand to the living room, where Constance was reading.
Constance raised her eyes to the two stunning women standing in front of her.
"You both look way more rested. Will you join me for dinner?"
"Yes, mother."
"Very well… And until when should I count on your company?" Constance probed.
Jane had to hold a chuckle. Constance was way classier than Angela, but as all mothers, she also wanted to know things.
"I will set up my flight back to go with Jane, tomorrow or Monday the latest." And Constance was happy to hear the decision and firmness on her daughter's voice. There was no doubt left into her.
"As much as I enjoy your company, I am very happy to see you are settled." Constance offered diplomatically.
They enjoyed dinner together, and Constance retired for the evening, leaving them alone.
"When was your ticket back?" Maura asked.
"I had not set it up, I didn't know what to expect arriving here…"
Maura then opened her computer, and quickly arranged their tickets back to match.
"We can leave tomorrow, and be back to DC on Monday, so we could go back to work on Tuesday."
"That works for me. I will use one more sick day on Monday – that was my excuse for not showing up for work on Friday. How did you get away from work?"
Jane didn't want to hint that she knew about the unpaid leave because that would expose the fact she had been concerned enough to involve Dean, again.
"Unpaid leave, but I just reverted it as if I submitted it by mistake instead of regular personal time off for three days."
"Great… So are we all set?"
"Are we, Jane? I know I caused a lot of grievance, and I am really sorry for it… Can you really forgive me?"
"It is already forgiven, Maura. I have only one request to make…"
"What is it?"
"Please, please, never again make a decision that involves both of us without us talking through it first, together? Don't let things fester on your head or on your heart without us talking about it first. This is the way we always resolved things before: together. Let's please not change it now… Can you promise me that?"
"I promise." Maura nodded to emphasize her point.
"Good. So let's go to bed… I have missed my girlfriend terribly, and tomorrow we will spend the day flying, so…" Jane suggested, mischievously.
"That can certainly be arranged…" Maura approached Jane flushing her body against hers, standing on her tiptoes and at the same time moving her hand behind Jane's neck to pull her head down to capture Jane's lips in a searing kiss.
The following morning, they woke up early and had breakfast with Constance. Jane went to collect their things, giving Maura a chance to talk to her mother in private before they left.
"Thank you for having us here, mother."
"You are always welcome, darling. But next time, may I suggest you bring your tall companion with you, instead of making her find you half-way across the world?" Constance admonished, in a teasing tone.
Maura blushed.
"Maura, she loves you very much. I have never seen anyone as devoted to someone else as she is to you. Don't you ever doubt that…"
"I don't doubt her love, mother. I just don't want her to settle in life with less happiness than she deserves…" Maura sighed, lowering her eyes.
"I wish you could understand that you are her happiness, Maura. It is written plainly on her face, in her eyes, in the way she smiles when she speaks about you, and in every action of hers towards you. Cherish it. Very few people in life will find what you have with her."
"What if I am not enough?"
"You are more than enough, Maura. And if you ever think you are not, talk to her. If there is one thing Jane is, is direct. Talk to her instead of feeding your insecurities, or running away. Can you promise me that?"
"Yes, mother. I promised her that last night too. It was the only thing she asked of me."
"I hope you know how lightly you are getting out of this mess, Maura. She must love you dearly, because anyone else would either be too hurt or too proud to do what she has done to turn things around…"
"I know, mother. I don't know what I have done to deserve her, but I will do my best to continue being worthy of her."
"I love you, Maura. Take care, stay safe, but above all, darling, allow yourself to be happy…"
Constance hugged Maura, and that was how Jane found them when she walked back with their things.
They said their goodbyes and headed back to the airport.
The flight back had only one stop over, and they arrived in DC with plenty of time on Monday to get their things arranged in order to get back to normal life on Tuesday.
The rest of the week went smoothly, and Jane changed the date plans she had originally had for the previous weekend to the following one.
"Do you have anything scheduled for Saturday night?" She asked Maura.
"No, Jane. I cleared my schedule completely when I went to Switzerland…"
"Will you go on a date with me?"
"Do we have a date on Saturday?" Maura asked, excitedly.
"We do." Jane replied with a smug smirk.
Saturday during the day they went for a long walk – Maura still couldn't handle the impact of the run – and later used the time to tidy their home.
"Are you going to tell me where we are going for our date tonight?"
"No, it is always a surprise. It is a dinner date, and it is supposed to be a nice place, is all I will advance to you."
