A/N: sithlorde1988 here, with the first chapter of a rewrite for another of my older stories. This time, it's Digimon Data Squad Redux getting the rewrite! And no I'm not shelving the stories I've started for it. This will just be a side project I work on as time and opportunity permit. Needless to say, the original version of Data Squad Redux was a bit of a flop in many ways.
Not just because I had no reason to cross Data Squad over with TDI, but because I botched at least a couple of the characters' personalities in the short bit of the fic I'd gotten done. Not to mention, the original draft would've had the OC lampooning not just Sampson but to a lesser extent Davis from Adventure 02 as well since Veemon are tricky to write for, and their main paths past Champion level either leading to a DNA Digivolution that leads to a Ultra-Level mode change that uses a Royal Knight to act as catalyst for said mode change or directly into becoming a Royal Knight makes me question why I chose Veemon.
Instead, the OC will have a different partner Digimon entirely. Also, while much of canon will remain the same, some things will be at least minutely changed due to the extra character in the mix. And on the subject of pairings, despite what the original story said, the only pairing at this point that's set in stone is YoshinoxOC and even then that's not gonna be a rushed-into pairing.
They won't be the only pairing but other ones will be determined later on. Before I forget, I do not own Digimon in any way shape or form aside from my OC, though I do not own their partner Digimon. Credit for all things Digimon goes to Bandai Namco, Media Vision (who helped develop the Cyber Sleuth games where my OC's Digimon is from) and Toei (and whatever other studios helped with the anime). That said, on with chapter 1!
DIGIMON DATA SQUAD REDUX (Rewrite)
Chapter 1- A Digital Homecoming! Welcome to DATS!
(DATS Headquarters)
"Fujieda! What is the status of the Digimon you were sent to subdue and capture?" A man wearing a trenchcoat and sunglasses asked his subordinate who stood at attention while replying to him.
"Raptor-1 got away from me, unfortunately. However, I did manage to plant a tracker on it before it got away so I can easily track it should it reappear. Nevertheless, I failed you so I will accept any consequences you see fit to hand down, sir." Fujieda said, bowing to the man with a bit of a regretful tone in her voice. The man shook his head.
"Fujieda...Yoshino. You did the best you could do. Granted, I'd have preferred you bring in Raptor-1, but at least you got a tracker on it so we can keep tabs on its' movements. There will be no consequences this time, though I am going to ask you go on standby for now until we get more traces of Raptor-1's movements. Is that understood?" The man addressed Fujieda, now named Yoshino. Yoshino nodded as she bowed.
"Yes, sir! As you command, Commander Sampson!" Yoshino said to the man, now named Sampson. Sampson nodded to Yoshino.
"Dismissed for now, Fujieda. Keep an eye on that tracker in case Raptor-1 pops back up and we have to deploy at a moment's notice." Sampson commanded Yoshino, who nodded as she saluted Sampson.
"Yes sir." Yoshino said, bowing once more as she left the room, leaving Sampson alone with his thoughts.
(While Sampson and Yoshino's conversation was taking place, elsewhere)
A yellow dinosaur panted as it hid under a park bench, its' claws rubbing together nervously as it caught its' breath after escaping capture. However, the dinosaur wouldn't get to hold its' breath for long as it was spooked out of its' hiding place by the sound of an approaching bus, which pulled up to the nearby bus stop and the doors opened, allowing a few passengers to get off, among whom was a young man wearing jeans, red and black sneakers, red and black sunglasses and a red muscle shirt with an unbuttoned black leather vest worn open over the muscle shirt.
Around the young man's neck was a medium-sized gold chain, a farewell gift from an old friend of his that he'd worn at all times due to how precious it had become to him. Slung over one shoulder was a rust-colored red and white backpack. As he walked away from the bus stop, the young man set the backpack down to pull out a black hair tie-off which he used to pull his shoulder-length chocolate brown hair into a messy ponytail which fell neatly into place along his shoulders towards the top of his back. As the young man looked around, he realized there was no one else around.
Frowning, he kept walking, only just avoiding his foot hitting the cowering dinosaur that was hiding under the bench he'd set his backpack on. As the young man walked, his first thought was on what he was going to do now that he was back in town. He knew for sure he couldn't go back to his parents' house lest they ship him back off to the monk training camp he'd just come back from.
Mulling it over, he decided to go see if his friend still lived in town, as he figured if nothing else he could catch up with her. Making up his mind, the young man started walking off in the direction of his friend's house, not seeing the dinosaur running off behind him nor the curious dragon-like creature following him from a distance, intrigued by the young man. After a bit of walking he arrived at a house where he knew his friend lived, only to be disappointed when he saw the house was empty and looked to have been empty for some time. Sighing, he walked off, deciding to go grab some food and maybe try to plan out his next move from there.
As this was happening, another young man was in the middle of fighting off a bunch of street punks, looking like he was barely breaking a sweat as he did so. After awhile, the young man started panting from all the fights.
"Damon, finally giving up? You can't beat us all, you know! You're just one man!" The leader of the punks taunted the young man, who frowned at the leader before smirking.
"Giving up? Hardly! Marcus Damon doesn't back down from a fight, no matter who it's against. I don't care how many punks you throw at me, I'll take em' all! So bring it on, because IT'S FIGHTING TIME!" The now named Marcus said as he squared up with the punks, continuing to fight through them all. As he did so, both Marcus and the street punks failed to notice the slightly older young man walking past with a bag slung over his shoulder, too preoccupied with their fight. However, they also failed to notice the small dinosaur hiding behind a bench to watch the fights, looking intrigued and impressed with Marcus' skills.
(Back with Yoshino)
"Huh, go figure. I expected a first-class dressing down and reaming from the commander. But I got off with basically a warning. I guess I should take it as a blessing, shouldn't I Lalamon?" Yoshino spoke to the Digimon inside her Digivice, a small pink-green plant Digimon called Lalamon.
"I think he was just relieved you're safe, Yoshi. But you did also impress with that tracker plan. That was pretty quick thinking on your part." Lalamon said to Yoshino, who smiled.
"Stop it, Lalamon. I wasn't THAT impressive. Now if I'd caught Raptor-1, or even brought it in single-handely, THAT would be impressive." Yoshino chided Lalamon, before looking up and blanching slightly as she recognized the young man walking past, as he was an old friend of hers. 'Could that be...?' Yoshino asked herself, wondering if it really was her old friend. She shook her head to dismiss the thought, since last she'd checked, Kyori was still off training according to his parents. Yet the young man she'd just seen walking looked suspiciously like him. Could he be back in town?
Yoshino wasn't sure, but she decided she'd try to find out since she had free time. So resolved, she pocketed her Digivice and hopped into her patrol car, deciding to follow the young man in case she was right about who he was. Speaking of the young man, by this point he'd gotten to a nearby diner, sitting his bag down next to him as he sat at the counter to order after getting his wallet out of the bag and putting it in his pocket. The waitress turned to the young man, smiling as she addressed him.
"I'll take your order shortly, okay sir?" The waitress asked the young man. He nodded respectfully.
"That's fine. I can wait." The young man replied, smiling at the waitress. As she walked off to help others, the young man grabbed a menu that was nearby and glanced at it, not seeing or feeling the curious dragon slip into his bag as he looked at the menu. As he did so, Yoshino's car pulled into the diner she'd tailed the young man to. Figuring she'd earned a lunch break, she got out and went inside, finding the young man at the counter getting ready to order. However, unlike the young man, Yoshino, or more accurately Lalamon, spotted the Digimon immediately.
"Yoshi, I sense a Digimon in here." Lalamon said quietly to Yoshino from inside Yoshino's Digivice. Yoshino quietly hushed Lalamon before seeing the dragon's tail poking out of the young man's bag. Yoshino frowned, before reluctantly walking up to the young man, gently tapping on his shoulder to get his attention. As she did, he slowly looked up from his menu to see who had gotten his attention and his eyes widened behind his sunglasses when he recognized Yoshino. He gasped softly as he looked at Yoshino.
"Y-Yoshi? Is that you?" The young man asked Yoshino, his deep yet smooth voice catching Yoshino off-guard as he removed his sunglasses to let her see his eyes, her own eyes going wide as she got confirmation that this young man was in fact her old friend.
"K-Kyori...When did you get back into town?" Yoshino asked the now named Kyori, who smirked.
"Not that long ago. I'm sorry I left you without much explanation like that, Yoshi. I didn't want to, but I had no choice. My mom can be quite forceful when she wants to be. But you have no idea how glad I am to see you." Kyori said to Yoshino, smiling as he gently wrapped his arms around her as he hugged her, surprised if pleased to see his old friend again. Unknown to him, Yoshino's cheeks were tinged pink, presumably with embarrassment. Unbeknownst to Kyori though, Yoshino had been checking him out the whole time, both surprised and impressed with how much he'd changed in the past three to four years he'd been away. Yoshino finally broke the hug, hiding her face until she got her embarrassment under control. She looked up at Kyori.
"Probably not as glad as I am to see you, Kyori. I missed you so much." Yoshino said, sitting down next to Kyori who smiled.
"I did tell you you could call me Kyo, did I not Yoshi?" Kyori said to Yoshino gently. Yoshino nodded.
"Sorry, Kyo. I forgot you said that." Yoshino said sheepishly then remembered why she'd tapped his shoulder in the first place.
"Kyo, did you know there's a lizard in your bag?" Yoshino asked Kyori who frowned, grabbing his bag and gently unzipping it, his eyes widening as he saw the black and yellow dragon laying inside of it. Kyori gently lifted it out of the bag and onto his lap, smiling as he looked at it.
"And just why were you hiding in my bag, little one? I've never seen anything like you before." Kyori said to the dragon who looked up at Kyori, slowly relaxing.
"Sorry, I was just intrigued by the way you dress and how you carry yourself. I should've asked before hiding in your bag. You can call me Ryudamon." The now named Ryudamon said to Kyori, who nodded to Ryudamon.
"Ryudamon? Not a bad name. Well met, Ryudamon. I am Kyori Kusanagi, but I invite my friends to call me Kyo for short if they wish, even if some of them don't always remember this." Kyori said to Ryudamon, turning to playfully wink at Yoshino as he said the last bit, enjoying the embarrassed and sheepish look on her face when he winked. Kyori then turned back to Ryudamon, looking at it curiously.
"Were you travelling by yourself, Ryudamon? Or did you have friends with you?" Kyori asked Ryudamon. Ryudamon frowned but shook its' head.
"I'm alone. I don't have anyone else. Even amongst Digimon, I was seen as something of a loner. Though I do know of at least a couple other Digimon that are here in this world, including in your friend's device on her hip." Ryudamon said, lazily lifting its' tail to point at Yoshino's Digivice which Kyori only just noticed in that moment. He looked at Yoshino.
"New accessory, Yoshi? I don't remember you having that before." Kyori asked Yoshino, who now had a nervous wide-eyed look on her face.
"You might as well tell him, Yoshi. He already knows about Digimon now. No sense in keeping a secret from your friend. Worst case, we can have the Commander wipe his memory of Digimon later." Lalamon replied from inside Yoshino's Digivice before she sighed.
"You're right, Lalamon." Yoshino replied to Lalamon before looking at Kyori. "It's a bit of a long story, but this device is called a Digivice and it's used to transport and store a partner Digimon if you have one. And since you already heard her speaking, you might as well follow me. I can get you something to eat later to make up for your lost meal." Yoshino said to Kyori who shrugged.
"That's fine. Lead the way, Yoshi." Kyori said, giving her a trusting grin that made her look away so as not to let him see the pink tinges on her cheeks. They headed to Yoshino's car, but not before Kyori told Ryudamon to hide in his bag for the time being while they figured out long-term arrangements for it, to which Ryudamon readily agreed. After a bit of a drive, Yoshino and Kyori eventually arrived back at DATS Headquarters. Yoshino turned to Kyori.
"Welcome to DATS HQ, Kyo." Yoshino said to a confused Kyori who followed her inside. Once inside, she showed him to a conference room where she invited him to have a seat. Once he'd done so, Yoshino pulled her Digivice off her hip and held it up.
"LALAMON! REALIZE!" Yoshino said as Lalamon materialized from out of Yoshino's Digivice, revealing herself to be a small pink-green bud-shaped Digimon with a yellow stem protruding from the top of her head. Yoshino looked at Kyori.
"Kyo, this is my partner Digimon, Lalamon. Lalamon, this is Kyori, or Kyo as he lets his friends call him for short, a childhood friend of mine who I'd not seen for a couple years before running into him today." Yoshino said introducing Lalamon and Kyori to each other. Kyori, for his part, simply gave Lalamon a polite nod of acknowledgement.
"Nice to meet you, Lalamon. As Yoshino said, I'm Kyori Kusanagi, though I let my friends call me Kyo for short." Kyori said to Lalamon before turning to Yoshino.
"Should I let Ryudamon out of my bag or no?" Kyori asked Yoshino, who tapped her finger to her cheek thoughtfully as she pondered Kyori's question.
"For now, probably not. Wouldn't want Ryudamon mistaken for a wild Digimon and taken from you." Yoshino replied eventually, and Kyori nodded. Before he could reply, a taller man walked into the room, his trenchcoat billowing behind him. The taller man looked at Yoshino.
"Fujieda, who's this? And why did you bring him here?" The taller man asked Yoshino who sweatdropped and turned to face him.
"Commander! I didn't think you were still here! That's my childhood friend Kyori Kusanagi, or Kyo as some call him for short. I happened upon him while out on patrol, and planned to catch up with him when I saw a Digimon crawl into his bag. However, after some investigation, I have reason to believe the Digimon could be Kyori's partner, even if Kyori doesn't have a Digivice just yet." Yoshino explained to the taller man, who's eyes widened slightly behind his sunglasses.
"Kyori? I didn't know you were home from training. Your mother said you wouldn't be back for a few more years." The taller man said frowning. Kyori shrugged at the man.
"My mother tends to say a lot of things, sir. Not all of them are the truth, however. Suffice it to say, she would rather I spent years training to be a monk. I myself would rather be back at home, with my friends making a difference. It's been awhile though, ." Kyori said to Sampson, giving the taller man a nod of respect.
"That it has, Kyo. But that's Commander Sampson now. I'm not merely your mentor anymore, not that I have been for the past couple years anyways. Either way, I'm glad to see you back home where you belong. May I see your Digimon that Yoshino told me about?" Sampson asked, prompting Kyori to look at him apprehensively, before looking to Yoshino who gave a brief nod. Kyori then opened up his bag, carefully lifting Ryudamon out of the bag and setting him on the table for Sampson to see.
"Lalamon, Sampson, meet Ryudamon. He apparently found my looks and appearance intriguing so he stowed away in my bag. I don't think he means any harm either. But maybe I'm wrong? You two seem like the Digimon experts here so maybe you know something I don't. I'm open to your opinions." Kyori said to Sampson and Yoshino as Ryudamon looked around DATS uneasily, eventually nuzzling its' face into Kyori's waist as its' tail wrapped itself around Kyori's right arm carefully. Kyori blinked.
"It seems like an affectionate little fella, doesn't it?" Kyori eventually said, sheepishly rubbing his neck with his free arm. Yoshino giggled a bit in spite of herself.
"It sure does seem that way. Not that that's a bad thing. If anything it just makes it likelier you two could end up partners. Too bad you don't have a Digivice though." Yoshino replied, seeming to frown slightly as she finished speaking. Kyori smiled at Yoshino, gently lifting Ryudamon off his arm and gently laying it on his shoulder so he could use both arms to zip his bag back up. He then turned to face Yoshino.
"Does it really matter that I don't have a Digivice? I'm sure if I'm meant to have one I'll end up with one soon enough. Is it not enough that Ryudamon and I are somewhat on friendly terms...I think?" Kyori said to Yoshino, turning his head slightly to fix Ryudamon with a questioning glance as he finished speaking. Ryudamon looked at Kyori.
"Kyo, I may not have many friends, but I see no reason you and I can't be friends. Sure, you're a human and I'm a Digimon, but if Yoshino and Lalamon there can be friends, why can't we?" Ryudamon said, making Kyori shrug, careful not to knock off Ryudamon from his shoulder.
"No reason I can see. Though I'm not the one who works for a DATS. Yoshi, any reason you can think of that I shouldn't be friends with Ryudamon?" Kyori replied, looking from Ryudamon to Yoshino as he finished speaking. Yoshino didn't reply right away, instead gently tapping a finger on her cheek as she pondered Kyori's question, seemingly oblivious to the appraising glance he sent her direction as she pondered. Despite himself, Kyori found himself admitting (at least internally) that Yoshino's pondering expression was inexplicably adorable. Eventually, Yoshino spoke.
"No, there's not. Provided, that is, Ryudamon doesn't prove itself to be a threat to the real world. Unfortunately, DATS has a policy that all Digimon who cause trouble must be converted back into DigiEggs and shipped back to the Digital World, with no exceptions. However, Ryudamon hasn't really caused any trouble yet, unlike another Digimon I could mention." Yoshino replied, and before Kyori could answer that, a beeping sound could be heard from Yoshino's pocket. Kyori blinked.
"Is that beeping sound coming from your phone, Yoshi?" Kyori asked, making Yoshino's eyes widen slightly as she hurriedly pulled the tracker out of her pocket, remembering it.
"No, that would be this tracker I planted on another Digimon I was tracking earlier." Yoshino replied. Kyori frowned as he read the display.
"What kind of a Digimon is a Raptor-1? That doesn't sound like a Digimon name really." Kyori said, leaving Yoshino nervous. On the one hand, that was classified information, but on the other, could she lie to her childhood best friend like that? Fortunately she was spared a decision when Sampson walked back in.
"Fujieda! And apparently Kusanagi as well since you're still here. Raptor-1 has been sighted in town. Go and investigate, and if possible, subdue it. Kusanagi, I know you're confused, but Yoshino can fill you in on the way. I think you can be trusted with that knowledge. Mind, I reserve the right to remove said knowledge from your memory should you prove me wrong. Are we clear?" Sampson asked Kyori, narrowing his eyes behind his sunglasses as he looked at Kyori.
"Crystal, sir. Or would you rather I address you as Commander?" Kyori replied, fixing Sampson with a questioning gaze as he finished his sentence. Sampson shrugged.
"Techincally, you're still a civilian so you can just stick to for now. Depending on a few things and how they go though, that might change." Sampson replied. Kyori nodded.
"Acknowledged, ." Kyori said as he and Yoshino filed out of the room to go investigate Raptor-1.
(Meanwhile, with said Raptor-1/Agumon)
"Give up yet, Damon?" The leader of the punks Marcus had been fighting taunted Marcus as he finished dispatching yet another wave of the punks, looking a bit winded but otherwise good to go. Marcus caught his breath before giving a defiant sneer to the leader of the punks.
"Is that all you got? I could keep going all day long!" Marcus said defiantly. The leader of the punks frowned.
"Not for long." The leader said, hitting a button next to him, seemingly not doing anything until Marcus found himself tackled to the ground by what looked to be a small yellow dinosaur with red bands on its' arms. The dinosaur looked at Marcus, who was wide-eyed as he saw the spiked log pass by right where his head had been just moments prior. He then looked at the dinosaur.
"I'm not pleased that you tackled me like that with no warning, but since you managed to save me as a result, I'll let it slide this time. Now who are you and what are you doing here?" Marcus asked the dinosaur who looked at him uncertainly.
"I'm Agumon. I'm what's called a Digimon. As for why I'm here, I saw you fighting and was impressed by your skills. That and I've been being chased around by these crazy people all day and happened to stop to catch my breath under a nearby bench when I saw you walk by and figured if nothing else I could test myself against you, and failing that throw myself at your mercy, and possibly protection." Agumon explained, making Marcus frown as he hated thinking too much. Yet this dinosaur, Agumon as it'd called itself, was making him do just that with his explanation. Marcus grabbed Agumon by the neck.
"We'll talk later. For now let's get out of here and head back to my place where you can hide for now until things blow over." Marcus said to Agumon, slinging the lizard over his shoulder as he dashed off towards his house, not seeing the DATS patrol car following him and Agumon as they ran off. Inside of said car, Kyori and Yoshino were both looking on wide-eyed as they followed Marcus and Agumon.
"I take it the dinosaur slung over that guy's shoulder is Raptor-1?" Kyori asked Yoshino after a bit of slience. Yoshino nodded.
"Very perceptive, Kyo. That is indeed Raptor-1. Now to follow it and the human its' with then get instructions from Commander Sampson." Yoshino said as they kept following the oblivious Marcus and Agumon home. Eventually they tailed the duo to a two-story house that looked fairly fancy. They frowned as Marcus jumped onto a pipe and climbed it up to a second-story window which he pushed open, diving into it with Agumon on his shoulder. Kyori and Yoshino exchanged wary looks at this, guessing it was probably Marcus' bedroom that the window lead to. They put the car in park and waited for Marcus to come back out, though not before Yoshino put in a call to Sampson to update him on the situation.
(inside the Damon house)
"Whew, that was close. Do you think those punks followed us all the way here, Agumon?" Marcus asked Agumon after tossing him down onto the nearby mattress. Agumon shrugged.
"Heck if I know, Boss. Though I think I DID see some lights behind us the whole way back but I figured it was probably a streetlight or something." Agumon replied. Marcus glared at Agumon, whether it was because of its' referring to Marcus as 'boss', because of its' failure to report the lights, or some other reason Agumon was unsure. Before Marcus could reply he heard footsteps on the stairs, going wide-eyed and grabbing Agumon. "Hide!" Marcus said, quickly stuffing Agumon into the nearby closet and shutting the door behind Agumon just as his bedroom door opened up and a woman walked in, looking slightly older than Marcus.
"I thought that might be you coming in through your bedroom window, Marcus. Who were you talking to just now?" The woman asked Marcus with a raised eyebrow.
"N-no one. You're just imagining things, Mom. Really." Marcus said nervously, but the woman, now identified as Marcus' mom, wasn't buying it. She got up close to him and looked him in the eyes.
"Marcus Damon, you know full well that when your father disappeared we promised there'd be no secrets between the three of us, and no lies. Now don't insult my intelligence by claiming I'm imagining things. Who were you talking to?" Marcus' mom asked, crossing her arms as she glared at him. As he was being reamed by his mother, Marcus failed to notice Agumon slipping through the open window to hide after having fallen out of the closet.
Agumon frowned. 'The three of us? But there's only two of them in that room?' Agumon thought, confused, before a soft gasp behind him made Agumon turn around to see a small girl, not older than eight or nine if Agumon had to guess, looking at it with a wide-eyed, confused look. The subsequent scream that she gave off could be heard from both inside the house AND inside the parked car below, prompting several sets of eyes to go wide, for different reasons. In the car, Kyori and Yoshino nodded, knowing Raptor-1 was in the house.
In the house, Marcus facepalmed, correctly guessing Agumon was the cause of the scream. "All right fine, you weren't imagining things Mom. But I can't really explain more than that just now since I myself am unsure of a lot of the details. Let me just go grab Agumon from outside and you can meet him." Marcus said to his mom, swearing quietly under his breath as he reached through the window to grab Agumon by the neck, dragging him in through the window, unaware of his sister standing outside seeing the whole thing and the two occupants of the car parked below observing things. Marcus' sister eventually followed the dinosaur inside, her curiousity piqued. As she came in through the window, her and Marcus' mom glared at her.
"And why were you outside playing on the roof again, Kristy? You know you're not supposed to be up there." Marcus and the now named Kristy's mother said, glaring at the now named Kristy.
"I saw, and this is gonna sound unusual, a giant orange lizard outside my window. So of course I came out to make sure I wasn't seeing things, and sure enough it's a giant orange lizard. Honest." Kristy replied. Marcus and Agumon both facepalmed.
"First of all, it's not a lizard Kristy! It's a dinosaur! And it's name is Agumon! I'm keeping it hidden for now because it had crazy people chasing it and because it saved me from nearly having my head taken off by some punks I was testing my skills against. Apparently the salty fools can't take defeat well." Marcus said huffing as he crossed his arms. Kristy, as well as Kristy and Marcus' mom, both looked over at Agumon.
"So your name is Agumon is it? Nice to meet you. Um, you are friendly right?" Kristy said, uneasily walking closer to Agumon to get a better look at him. Agumon looked warily at Marcus.
"What's the play here, boss?" Agumon asked Marcus. Marcus' eye twitched, presumably at Agumon calling him 'boss'.
"First of all, don't call me 'boss'. You can call me Marcus. Secondly, I trust my mom and sister so don't hurt either of them. Or else I hurt YOU. Got it?" Marcus said to Agumon with a glare. Agumon nodded.
"Yeah, I got it." Agumon said, turning to Marcus' mom and sister. "Nice to meet you both. I'm Agumon. And to correct a small misconception Marcus seems to have, I'm not a dinosaur but rather a Digimon. But I can see where he'd be confused given my build and appearance." Agumon clarified before looking directly at Kristy.
"And to your question, yes I am friendly for the most part. So do you have a name or should I just call you Marcus' Sister?" Agumon asked Kristy jokingly.
"You can call me Kristy. Our mom's name is Sarah. But she'll probably prefer you either call her Mrs. Damon or Mom." Kristy remarked off-handedly, ignoring Marcus' groan from behind her as she spoke to Agumon. Sarah, as Marcus and Kristy's mom was now known, nodded to Kristy's reply.
"Kristy is right. Though if you're not comfortable with either of those you can call me ma'am if you really need to. I'll try not to laugh too much if you do." Sarah said teasingly. Before any further words could be exchanged, a knock could be heard downstairs. Sarah and Marcus looked at each other before the former went downstairs to answer the door, leaving the latter alone with Kristy and Agumon. Marcus told Kristy to take Agumon and hide in the closet until the coast was clear. Despite both Kristy AND Agumon's protests, Marcus stood firm so they did as he asked. Marcus then made to follow his mother downstairs. Once downstairs, he saw his mother answer the door, and blinked as he saw a man and woman who looked to be a few years older than him standing there, the woman looking slightly official but the man just taking in the surroundings of the house with an appraising glance. Marcus frowned, as he realized he'd seen the man walking past previously while he and the punks were fighting.
"Can I help you two?" Sarah asked the man and woman as she opened the door. The woman pulled out a badge that read 'DATS' and showed it to Sarah.
"Yoshino Fujieda and Kyori Kusanagi, we're here with DATS. We have reason to believe you're hoarding an escaped Digimon in your house. Might you permit us entry to your house so we can take a look for ourselves to verify if this is true or not?" Yoshino asked Sarah, while Kyori's gaze landed firmly on Marcus. "You there, in the kitchen. Weren't you walking around town earlier picking fights?" Kyori asked Marcus cautiously, unsure if Marcus would be a threat or not but not wanting to take any chances. Marcus crossed his arms as he looked at Kyori.
"And what if I was? Last I checked, self-defense wasn't a crime. Besides, I saw you walking past earlier while that fight was going on so you have no room to lecture me on it when you didn't try to help." Marcus replied cautiously. Kyori laughed aloud at Marcus' response.
"You misunderstand me, good sir. I was merely curious. Also from what I saw, you were able to hold off several waves of trained thugs bare-handed, which is admittedly very impressive. What say you and I take a tour of your house and we can discuss that fight? Your skills are impressive, but there's always room to better yourself. Or so I'm told. Shall we?" Kyori asked Marcus, giving him a slight nod of respect as he spoke to him. Yoshino paid this interaction no mind, too busy conversing with Sarah. Marcus shrugged to Kyori.
"I guess it couldn't hurt to show you around. Follow me, Kyori was it?" Marcus asked Kyori who nodded.
"That's correct, my name is Kyori Kusanagi. Though if you play your cards right, I might let you call me Kyo for short like I do for most of my friends." Kyori said to Marcus. Marcus shrugged as he invited Kyori inside, and the two began to walk around the inside, Marcus explaining the various rooms on the first floor to an intrigued Kyori. After they went up to the second floor, Kyori clearly heard movement in one of the rooms prompting him to look at Marcus.
"Is it just you and your mother in this house, or are there others living here I should be aware of? Granted I think you said something about having a sister so it might just be her?" Kyori asked Marcus with a raised eyebrow, only for both to facepalm as an audible 'OOF!' was heard from inside the room Marcus and Kyori were walking past. Kyori raised an eyebrow before turning to Marcus.
"Is that your bedroom, if you don't mind my asking?" Kyori asked. Marcus sheepishly nodded. Both went inside so Marcus could show off the room, only for Kyori's eyes to widen and Marcus to facepalm and bite back a string of profanities as both saw the yellow dinosaur laid out on the bed in plain sight as they walked in. Kyori turned to Marcus, an amused smirk on his face.
"I didn't think you had a partner Digimon, Marcus. Is this a new development?" Kyori asked Marcus cautiously yet inquisitively. Marcus sighed, before nodding.
"Yeah. I ran into him after he saved me from the leader of the punks you saw me fighting. He saved me from getting a spiked log ran through the back of my head, and he said he was being chased by crazy people so I let him hide out here." Marcus explained. Kyori nodded, turning towards Agumon.
"Hello there, little one. You must be the Raptor-1 I've heard so much about. My name is Kyori. Do you have a name, or should I just call you Raptor-1?" Kyori asked Agumon who blinked at the question.
"Raptor-1? I don't know what that is, but my name is Agumon. Wait...that's what that crazy lady wearing pink called me earlier when she tried to capture me." Agumon said, realizing Kyori might be with the group chasing him. Kyori, as if sensing the nervousness in Agumon's body language, smiled at it.
"Relax, I mean you no harm. And I think you might have misunderstood what was going on. I can't say much but suffice it to say you probably ran into my friend Yoshino. She was just trying to do her job. I don't think she meant you any harm. But that's all I can say at this time unless I get clearance to disclose further information. Does that clear up your confusion?" Kyori asked Agumon, hoping so. Agumon shrugged.
"I guess that makes sense. But I'm not sure if I should trust you or not in case you try to capture me." Agumon said, hiding behind Marcus uneasily. At that moment, the door to the nearby closet flew open, and a small girl of no older than eight or nine, maybe ten, stepped out, going wide-eyed as she saw Kyori with Marcus. She then glanced at Agumon before looking warily towards Marcus.
"Sorry, Big Brother. I tried to keep him hidden but he kept falling out of the closet." Kristy said apologetically to Marcus. Kyori looked at Kristy.
"Do you often hide in your brother's closet like that, little one? Or was there a reason you were doing so when you were?" Kyori asked, confused by Kristy being inside Marcus' closet, and looking towards Marcus for an explanation. Marcus and Kristy both simultaneously facepalmed at Kyori's question.
"No, I don't hide in Marcus' closet often. And yes there was a reason. My name is Kristy by the way." Kristy replied after pondering momentarily if she should. Marcus looked at Kyori.
"And I had her hiding in there with Agumon over there because we weren't sure if you and your friend down there were gonna try to capture him or whatever." Marcus explained. Kyori nodded before smiling at Marcus and Kristy.
"I see. I can't speak for Yoshino, but I personally have no intention of harming anyone if it can be avoided. I prefer to solve things peacefully where possible. And nice to meet you, Kristy. You can call me Kyori, or Kyo if you want." Kyori said, acknowledging Kristy's reply as he finished speaking. At that moment, Yoshino came into the room, followed by Sarah.
"Ah, good work Kyori. You found Raptor-1." Yoshino said, nodding at Kyori with approval.
"That I did. However, I sense Raptor-1 is harmless and only ran because you scared him before, Yoshino. So it's possible he's not a threat at all." Kyori said to Yoshino, prompting her to tap her finger on her cheek contemplatively. Eventually her phone rang. Yoshino went outside to answer it, leaving Kyori alone with the Damons and Agumon. Sarah looked at Kyori.
"Kyori, was it? My children tell me you were here for Agumon? Is it in trouble?" Sarah asked Kyori, who frowned.
"Honestly, I wouldn't think so. However, it's not really my place to say if Agumon is in fact in trouble or not. That's for Yoshino and the Commander to decide. I wouldn't worry much though. If nothing else, Marcus will probably just have to be partnered up with Agumon and keep him in check if anything. I'm going through the same thing myself, but you don't have to take my word for it." Kyori said, setting down his bag and lifting the top flap. "Ryudamon, why don't you come on out and say hi to the Damons? I think they're friendly enough." Kyori said, seemingly speaking to his bag. Eventually a faint 'okay' could be heard from inside the bag as Ryudamon slowly climbed out of the bag, his black and gold body being more prominent in the light, and allowing Kyori a better look at him. In this light, Kyori realized Ryudamon had a shogun's headpiece on his head along with a snake-like body, as well as tiny claws. Ryudamon looked at Sarah, Kristy and Marcus.
"Hello, Damons. I am Ryudamon. Nice to meet you." Ryudamon said to the Damons before blinking at the sight of Agumon and turning to Kyori.
"Kyori, is that Raptor-1?" Ryudamon asked Kyori who nodded.
"Yeah, but apparently he was just running scared previously so we're waiting for word on what's to happen to him. In the meantime, these are the Damons. The little girl is Kristy, the taller woman is Sarah and the guy next to Sarah is her son and Kristy's brother, Marcus." Kyori said, quickly introducing Ryudamon to each of the Damons. Around that moment, Yoshino came back in, having finished her phone call looking annoyed. She turned to Kyori first.
"We've had orders from HQ. Apparently, we're to stay here and monitor Raptor-1 until we can be sure he's not a threat. So it looks like Raptor-1 isn't in trouble, for now." Yoshino said, before seeing Ryudamon out of the bag. She frowned at Kyori.
"Why is Ryudamon out of his bag?" Yoshino asked Kyori. Kyori shrugged.
"I figured maybe meeting him might relax the Damons enough to not be so wary of us. If nothing else it might relax Raptor-1, or Agumon as he prefers to be called, enough to not be wary of you. I do think you scared him before when you tried to apprehend him. But that's just my opinion." Kyori said, making Yoshino frown then shrug.
"I trust your judgement, Kyo. Let's just hope this doesn't get both of us in trouble." Yoshino replied. Kyori nodded, then spoke.
"True. But I do think you could stand to relax more, Yoshi. I know we've not been in contact for some time before today, but surely you have to remember that I'd never do anything that would put you at risk or get you hurt." Kyori said to Yoshino, smiling softly at her as he gently put his arms around her waist so he could look into her eyes for a moment, not really sure why he was doing so but doing it anyways. Neither of them heard Kristy and Sarah giggling behind them at their antics, or if they did, they ignored them. Unfortunately for Kyori and Yoshino, the would-be moment was shattered before it could really begin by the sound of explosions coming from outside.
As one, the whole group ran outside, with the exceptions of Agumon and Ryudamon who were told to stay inside by Marcus and Kyori respectively as the rest of the group went out front. Once out there, Yoshino, Kyori AND Marcus all gaped at the sight of three Digimon, all taller than even the humans by a bit, were rampaging through the area, with Yoshino gasping as she saw her car in flames from a mis-aimed attack, the sight making her almost pass out, had Kyori not caught her in his arms before she could hit the ground, gently laying her down while he and Marcus turned to the three Digimon.
Kyori noticed that of the three one looked like a black and white dinosaur, one looked like a bigger version of Agumon with a horned headpiece over its' face, blue stripes along its' chest and a much longer tail than Agumon had. The third Digimon appeared to be a walking cactus with pinkish-red boxing gloves on its' arms where hands would be. Marcus and Kyori looked at each other, exchanging an unspoken nod of agreement before both walked up to the Digimon.
"And just why are you three trying to destroy this area? What do you hope to accomplish by doing this?" Kyori asked the Digimon, frowning as his question was ignored. However, his eyes widened as Marcus ran up, taking a flying dive at the taller Agumon and landing a punch square on its' chest, prompting him to hit the ground with a orange-red light coming off his fist that had hit the taller Agumon. As for Kyori, he glared at the other two, having to dive to the ground to avoid a volley of needles that the cactus shot off in his direction, most of which barely missed Sarah and Kristy. At that moment, the front door flew open and Agumon and Ryudamon ran outside, staring down the Digimon.
"Boss, why are you and Kyori trying to take on a Greymon, Togemon and Monochromon on your own?" Agumon asked Marcus. Ryudamon looked at Agumon.
"Probably because Yoshino got incapacitated if I had to guess. Not that we're gonna be much help against a trio of Champion-level Digimon." Ryudamon said. Kyori glared at the Digimon.
"That tears it. Do what you will to me, and even my stuff. But when you try to hit my friends and even my associates, that's where I draw the line! I might not have one of those Digivices, but I'm not backing down! Ryudamon and I will take you on regardless! And I have no doubts Marcus and Agumon will be at my side as we take you on, am I right?" Kyori said, not noticing the silvery-grey light that had washed over him while he spoke, instead looking over at Marcus who nodded.
"Damn right! It's fightin' time! YEAHHHHH!" Marcus yelled excitedly as he started trying to exchange blows with the taller Agumon, or Greymon as Agumon had called it. Unbeknownst to Kyori or Marcus, a small orangish-red device was tossed down towards Marcus, who caught it. At that same moment, Kyori's bag opened itself up as what looked to be a cracked and broken phone slid out of the bag before being covered in a slivery-grey light, similar to the light that had briefly flared over Kyori himself as he'd called out the Digimon, before turning into a silvery-grey version of the device Marcus had gotten. Instinctively, the two looked at each other and nodded before the screen cut to a split-screen of Marcus and Kyori holding their devices up.
"DNA CHARGE! YAH!" Marcus and Kyori said as their fists glowed orangeish-red and silvery grey respectively before being slammed onto the tops of the devices, causing bursts of light to hit Agumon and Ryudamon respectively.
"AGUMON/RYUDAMON DIGIVOLVE TO!" Agumon and Ryudamon yelled as they started Digivolving. Agumon got taller, his shoulders got spikes on them, his tail lengthened significantly, he got red stripes along his chest and he got a spikier version of the headpiece that Greymon had. Ryudamon meanwhile, got much longer, it's claws extending outward a bit as its' shogun headpiece became smaller and less pronounced as it became a silvery headpiece, making him look sleeker and tougher. His legs got red armored shoulder-pads over the knees.
"GEOGREYMON/GINRYUMON!" The now revealed GeoGreymon and Ginryumon said simultaneously as they stared down the three opposing Digimon. Ginryumon looked at GeoGreymon.
"You got Togemon? If so, I got Greymon." Ginryumon said to GeoGreymon, who nodded. GeoGreymon glared at Togemon.
"Take this! MEGA BURST!" GeoGreymon said, firing a massive fireball from his mouth at the Togemon who barely had time to cry out in shock as it was quickly burnt up and reverted to a DigiEgg. Meanwhile Ginryumon glared at Greymon as it's mouth opened, revealing the shaft of a spear protruding from it where a tongue would normally be.
"METAL ARMOR BLADE!" Ginryumon called out as it fired the spear from its' mouth, striking Greymon dead on in the chest, knocking it to the ground where it burst into data and reverted to a DigiEgg, leaving Ginryumon and GeoGreymon to stare down Monochromon. At about that point, Yoshino came back to. She blinked, whether from the sight of GeoGreymon and Ginryumon or from the sight of Digivices in Kyori and Marcus' hands, no one was sure. Eventually she stood up with the two guys.
"Our turn, Lalamon! REALIZE!" Yoshino called as Lalamon materialized as a burst of pink light came from Yoshino and enveloped her right hand.
"DNA CHARGE!" Yoshino called out as she slammed her glowing hand onto the top of her Digivice, causing a pink light to envelop Lalamon as she Digivolved.
"LALAMON DIGIVOLVE TO!" Lalamon called out as she got taller, grew arms and legs, turned mostly green and yellow, and her head became the image of a flower, before she posed on camera revealing her new name to be... "SUNFLOWMON!" The now-Digivolved Sunflowmon said as she joined Ginryumon and GeoGreymon. She then looked at Monochromon. She smirked at GeoGreymon and Ginryumon who were staring at her slack-jawed, not expecting her to step in.
"Need a hand, fellas?" Sunflowmon asked coyly as she looked at both, seemingly turning towards Ginryumon and winking coyly at him, briefly leaving Ginryumon dumbfounded but he shook it off as he and GeoGreymon nodded.
"Let's take him out together." GeoGreymon suggested to Sunflowmon and Ginryumon, who both nodded.
"MEGA BURST!/METAL ARMOR BLADE!/SUNSHINE BAZOOKA!" The three champions called out as their attacks fired off in unison, overwhelming the Monochromon who barely had time to cry out before he too was turned into a DigiEgg. After that, the three Champions glowed the same colors as their partners' DNA Charges before reverting to Agumon, Lalamon and Ryudamon respectively. Marcus, Yoshino and Kyori scooped up their partners, thanking them for a good job, though Yoshino did quietly chastise Lalamon for being too coy as Sunflowmon before giving her a teasing wink to signify she had no objections if Lalamon might like Ryudamon. Yoshino then turned to Marcus and Kyori.
"Where'd you guys get those Digivices?" Yoshino asked Marcus and Kyori. Marcus blinked.
"Mine literally fell out of the sky into my hand. Kyori's was randomly transformed from some cracked and broken phone he had into a Digivice." Marcus explained. Kyori nodded in agreement of Marcus' assessment. Yoshino blinked at the mention of a broken cell phone. "Is that phone the phone I think it is?" Yoshino asked Kyori, who looked sheepish before nodding.
"If you're asking if it's the phone you gave me as a birthday present before I fell off the grid so to speak, then yes it is. Or I guess I should say it was since it's not a phone anymore. But I want you to know I didn't break it. It got broken when I was sent away against my will as an attempt to break me. Needless to say it didn't work even if it hurt like crazy to see the only gift you'd gotten to give me be abused like that. I'm sorry you had to find out about it like that, Yoshi. I hope you know I don't usually treat gifts like that." Kyori said to Yoshino who looked at Kyori uncertainly.
"I do, but I'm still upset. That phone was meant to be a way for us not to lose contact. How could you let it get broken?" Yoshino asked Kyori. Kyori looked at Yoshino.
"Remember how I said my mom can be very 'persuausive' when she wants to be?" Kyori asked Yoshino, who nodded. Kyori then sighed.
"She broke it as a means of expressing her displeasure at the path I was choosing to take with my life. I cussed her out something fierce after that before I was sent away." Kyori said to Yoshino. Yoshino simply nodded an acceptance of the explanation, but didn't say much to Kyori after that, making him hang his head as he realized he'd manage to hurt Yoshino after finally getting back in contact with her. Granted, Marcus was the one who mentioned the phone, but Kyori himself was the one who let it get broken without much of a struggle. Kyori turned to the Damons.
"Can you guys go inside for a bit so Yoshino and I can have some privacy? Take the Digimon with you as well. We'll be right in." Kyori said to the Damons, who nodded, each picking up a Digimon and going inside. Once everyone but Yoshino and Kyori had gone inside, Kyori walked over to Yoshino, wrapping his arms around her and gently holding her close to him.
"I know you're upset with me right now Yoshi, and you have every right to be. But I hope you can understand I treasure our friendship far more than some phone meant to symbolize it. Granted I did mess up not trying harder to keep it intact, and for that I am truly sorry, but is it not enough that we've found each other once again after being seperated for so long?" Kyori asked Yoshino, subconsciously running his fingers through her hair without realizing he was doing it as he tried to at least get her talking to him again. Yoshino said nothing at first, instead burying her face into Kyori's shirt, letting herself silently cry into his chest. Kyori just held Yoshino as she cried.
"Let it out, Yoshi. I know you've probably been missing me as much as I've been missing you, if not more. I hope in time you can forgive me for being so careless with the gift you gave me. I don't like seeing you upset like this." Kyori said to Yoshino, leaning down to gently use a finger to dry a stray tear that was sliding down Yoshino's cheek as he smiled at her. Yoshino sighed as she looked up at Kyori.
"Kyo, I'm not that upset at you. I'm disappointed you couldn't do better at protecting what I gave you to remember me by, yes. But I'm more glad we're back together again. And never doubt that I'll always be glad to see you. And you're right, I have missed you while you've been away. Next time, if there's a next time, at least let me know you're going so I can be able to say a proper good-bye to you." Yoshino said, barely audible due to being said partly into Kyori's chest. Kyori nodded.
"That's more than fair, Yoshi. I'm sorry I couldn't let you know before that I was going, but it was so short-notice and rushed I had no chance to try and let you know or I would've done. I don't plan on going anywhere anymore though if I can help it, Yoshi. So don't worry about me leaving you, because if I have my way about it, you're stuck with me from now on, within reason." Kyori said, smiling as he gently set Yoshino down on the porch before reaching for the nearby hose to extinguish the burning car that they'd showed up in. Kyori frowned at Yoshino as he looked back at her.
"Of course, there's the problem of how badly the Commander's probably gonna ream us if we bring back a torched car. That could be potentially problematic." Kyori said uneasily, expecting the sweatdrop that formed over Yoshi's head as she looked up at the torched ruins of their car. She swore under her breath.
"Ugh, this is the worst. The commander's probably gonna kill me." Yoshino said fretfully. Kyori laughed.
"Not if I take the blame for it, or if we blame it on Marcus and Raptor-1." Kyori pointed out, only half-joking. Yoshi frowned at the humor.
"That's not funny, Kyo. Even though it kind of IS Raptor-1's, or rather Agumon's, fault to a point since I'm willing to bet those Digimon were looking for him rather than either of our Digimon. Granted there's the slim chance they were after Ryudamon." Yoshino replied. Kyori nodded.
"You're right, that was a terrible joke. But at least you're not as sad now, so it still worked, am I right?" Kyori said. Yoshino smiled.
"Yeah, it worked." Yoshino said, briefly leaning her head against Kyori's chest before smiling up at him (since she was about 2-3 inches shorter than him).
"I suppose we should get back inside to keep an eye on the Damons and Raptor-1 like we were ordered to do." Yoshino said to Kyori, who nodded at her.
"Yeah, you're right. Still, never forget I'm always here for you, to whatever extent I can be, Yoshi." Kyori said to Yoshino.
"I know, and I appreciate you for that." Yoshino replied, hugging Kyori once more before the two went back inside, ignoring the knowing smirk on Marcus' face and the giggles coming from Kristy and Sarah.
(Back at DATS)
"Have the signals been stablized yet?" Sampson asked his two female subordinates that were working the desk, a blonde and a raven-hair. The blonde saluted Sampson.
"Yes, sir. At one point there were six Champion level Digimon readings, but three of them disappeared and the other three shrank down to match the readings of Rookie level Digimon. My guess is Yoshino and Kyori managed to find and stop the Digimon. As for the third, possibly they found and recruited Raptor-1?" The blonde said shrugging. The raven-hair facepalmed.
"Megumi, even if your theory is correct, wouldn't that imply that there were three Digivices in play earlier? Last I checked, only you, me and Commander Sampson has those aside from Yoshino." The raven-hair corrected the blonde, who was now named Megumi. Megumi rolled her eyes.
"And your idea would be better, Miki?" Megumi said to the now-named Miki as she rolled her eyes. Sampson facepalmed.
"I think Yoshino got the better end of this." Sampson said, grumbling under his breath. He then disappeared into his office to make a phone call, leaving the two females to stare at his retreating figure. Meanwhile, somewhere overhead, a plane was seen touching down. As it did so, a person in a tuxedo, presumably a butler, walked up to a blonde-haired, brown-eyed young man. The young man looked up as he saw the person standing before him.
"Yes? What is it?" The young man asked. The person in the tuxedo cleared his throat before speaking.
"We've landed at the airport and can begin the drive back to DATS HQ whenever you're ready, Master Norstein." The person in a tuxedo said. The young man nodded.
"Very good. I shall gather my things from the plane and we shall head there forthwith." The young man said. The person in a tuxedo had only one thing to say to that.
"As you wish sir..."
Next time on Digimon Data Squad Redux (rewrite)...
"What was that, Commander?"
"Thomas H. Norstein, reporting for duty!"
"You're not fit for DATS duty, Damon! I'm recommending you be dismissed at once!"
"SAY WHAAAA?"
"This is the worst..."
End of chapter
A/N: Whoa, this was a lot longer than either of the original chapters! And yes I mostly disregarded canon here! I'm not gonna do that often, but for the sake of bringing Kyori into the mix, it was necessary. And I know in the original I turned Marcus' Agumon into a Greymon but then I realized that'd be too contradictory to canon, plus I don't think WarGreymon has a Burst Mode per se. Hopefully this is much better than the original chapters I had up. I'll try to update where I can on this, but with Shuffled Journeys and A Mine is A Terrible Thing to Waste Redux taking front and center at the moment, this might be a side story that I work on where time permits. That said, if anyone reads this, I have a poll going for Shuffled Journeys (for those reading this that read that fic) where you can vote for which girls make Ash's harem. Right now, there's a 3 way tie for 1st at 5-5-5-2-1-0-0-0, but the poll's gonna stay open until probably the 3rd at least, possibly the 10th if I have to extend it for tiebreaking purposes. Because I have no legit idea what I'll do if the poll ends in a tie. Anyways, vote on that and spread the word to others to do the same. And feel free to leave a review or PM me with your thoughts/feedback on this story. I'm always open to input from readers. So yeah hope you enjoy this chapter! Until next update, sithlorde1988 out!
