A/N -I've never written a MASH story before, but I've read many, and I've been a fan of Hawkeye and Margaret for years ( for some reason they just work ) I hope I can do them both justice.
Disclaimer/ I don't own MASH or the characters, I only own the ones that I create.
Korea 1953
M*A*S*H Chopper Pad
Hawkeye sat in his seat looking down over the 4077th one last time, he'd wanted to leave this place so many times, but now that he finally was he realized that he wasn't as ready as he thought he would be when the time came.
Then reality dawned on him, he was full of regrets, especially where a certain Army Nurse was concerned, the night before they shared one final night between them. Both hadn't intended on things going as far as they did, they just wanted their own private goodbye, one that was more personal, the public one would come soon enough.
Still, as he sat there watching out the side of the chopper, he kept thinking about her, he knew he'd never hold up to her standard, she had set the bar high for the type of man she wanted, and he was only 20% of that. Still, he knew he just had to see her one more time before he left Korea for good.
"Dale I need to make a stop at the 8063rd."
"I'm supposed to be taking you to Kimpo"
"I know but I've got unfinished business and she's at the 8063rd."
"Fine Hawk, but if I get my ass chewed out it's on you."
Dale turned the chopper around and headed towards the 8063rd. He landed on the pad, and Hawkeye jumped out making his way down towards the camp, he stopped briefly when he spotted Lt Kellye, "Do you know where Major Houlihan is?"
"Yes, she's in the tent towards the end of the camp."
"Thank you, Kellye." He said as he kissed her cheek and made a dash to Margaret's tent. When he reached it, his nerves took over. What if this ended up being one big mistake on his part? What if he had misread all the signals? Or worse what if she didn't feel the same way about him, as he does about her? Well, he was about to find out, he raised his hand to knock just as she opened her door. "Hawkeye? Why are you here? I thought you were on your way to Kimpo?"
"Margaret, I had to talk to you one last time. Can I come in?"
"Yes of course." She moved to the side and let him in. He glanced around, "Love what you've done with the place."
"Hawkeye!"
"Look, I know we said our goodbyes already, but I..."
"I know, deep down I've always known."
"What exactly do you know Margaret?"
"You want me to spell it out for you Pierce?"
"No! No, well the first time I said it, I thought it was the real deal, Now I know it wasn't, I know with you it is."
"I see."
"Look Margaret I know my timing stinks, I know you've planned out your whole life..." She slapped her hand on his lips to get him to shut up.
"Now will ya shut up Pierce? I feel the same way. You just beat me to it."
He nodded his head as he kissed her palm, and he watched her smile, he loved seeing her smile, Thinking back he'd always loved seeing her smile, the way her entire face lit up, and her eyes sparkled, he knew he could drown in those sparking blue eyes. He gently removed her hand, "Margaret I can't stay long, but I couldn't leave without you knowing, Last night meant more to me.."
"I know Hawk, I know, it meant more to me as well. I wasn't expecting to fall for you, I guess my heart knows what's better for me than my head."
"Well, I personally think you should listen to your heart, as your Doctor."
"Can you please be serious here!" She snapped
"Is that an order Major? Cause you know how well I follow orders."
"More like you don't follow them. How's this going to work?"
"Where are you heading after here?"
"Tokyo."
"I'll be waiting for you there."Hawkeye turned away and started towards her door when he felt her hand take his, he turned around and looked into her eyes, her tears were running down her cheeks. He used his free hand to brush them away."I'll wait for you in Tokyo, I promise Margaret."
"Damn you Pierce, I can't say goodbye again."
"This isn't goodbye, just see ya later."
Margaret let out a small chuckle, "How will I find you?"
"I'll be at the Imperial Hotel, ask for me at the desk."
"I will, I promise you I will." This time Hawkeye left and Margaret stood next to her tent and watched him make his way back to the chopper pad, As she watched she felt alive for the first time in a while, her future was finally looking bright.
