A/N: Okay. Something happens in this chapter. I am sorry in advance. D:
On the upside; next chapter will be out on the 8th of October!
HE'S BACK
Very little progress was made in regards to the collection of the Dragonballs. Goku had to wait out the year for them to recharge their energy. Somehow though, while the wait was still as agonizing as usual, it was more... bearable. The knowledge that he could actually wish Harri over the moment that they were ready was enough to help keep him calm and focused on other things to pass that time. For example, his training. In direct opposition to the Dragonball search, there had been much progress in terms of his own training.
He traveled wherever his whims would take him, constantly moving. Every night he took out the magical tent that Harri had sent him. It was small on the outside, made to fit no more than a single person- if that. But on the inside! The inside was bigger than even the capsule house Bulma had used for part of the first Dragonball hunt.
There was the main sitting room, with a fire pit at the center and stools to sit around it. An open kitchen with specially charmed trunks that were made for cold storage and a large counter for cooking any wild animal he caught. A bathroom with both a tub and a standing shower. Two bedrooms, each with their own attached walk in closets. And even a room where clothes could get magically washed.
Mostly, he enjoyed sleeping in a warm dry place, that he could simply pack up and put in his pocket by morning.
With nothing left to learn from Master Roshi, Goku was tasked to travel around Earth to see what he sees and learn what he learns and left to generally- simply- train himself. The only catch; he'd been made to promise not to ride on Nimbus until the next World Tournament. It was a very sad thing as Goku missed his cloud dearly. But how could he train if he was constantly flying around on it's back? So Goku walked, or ran, or swam, or climbed and traveled in a generally 'straight' line from his starting point.
During that year he heard all about the magical tournament Harri was forced to attend. Goku followed updates on Harri's life as religiously as he told her random updates about his own.
Seeking refuge from the Tower, they'd gone to the place under the school that Harri had fought for her life in during her second year.
(There was a second basilisk down there, still alive, and incubating eggs. Considering what Harri had told him about the sire, it was a chilling thought- until Goku was informed that Harri was immune to any death stares thanks to her ability to speak to snakes... Eventually Harri had gotten up the nerve to find the basilisk that she killed in the pipes and had Hermione take a picture of the creature with Harri stood beside it. It was positively massive if the picture was to be believed and Goku couldn't help but think of it as a smaller version of the Eternal Dragon.)
At first Harri wanted nothing to do with the tournament thrust upon her. Knowing that she had nothing to loose if she didn't participate only seemed to enforce that idea.
But, as Goku pointed out for her, there were a lot more benefits in participating than there was to not. A valid reason for her and Hermione both to not attend classes were one; they could take their education in their own hands, go to teachers for advice on what they didn't understand or for help in practical use of a subject, and go farther in their lessons than the Professors intended for them to that year. All they'd need to say was that Hermione was helping Harri to train and that they'll attend tests, and that was that. (Hermione was reluctant at first, adamant that they'd be missing out if they didn't attend classes in person. But it soon proved to be too tempting to get ahead of everyone and surprise all the Professors with her mental prowess the longer that she watched Harri do exactly that.)
When they got all their school work done, they could then focus on other things- wordless and wandless magic mainly, but also finding other more practical uses for the charms and transfigurations that were taught, and even setting time aside to work on their Ki (Goku assured Harri that Ki was found in all living things, Master Roshi had told him this when he'd asked and despite the old man's bad habits there were truth to his words). That got Harri's attention the most; all of her efforts to be fit and healthy had been restarted so many times because of the Dursley's and the general happenings at Hogwarts. This sounded like the perfect time to get started on that again, she wouldn't even need to be discreet in what she knew because she could simply stay in the Chamber to do it all. Hermione, however, had learnt her lesson from first year and wanted nothing to do with the physical fitness training Goku had written up for Harri the moment that the raven haired witch had agreed.
The fact that Harri could then prove to all who doubted her that she was strong enough to face the tasks thrown at her- whatever they may be- and win was beyond question.
As the days to the first task ticked ever closer, Harri earned the trust of some old painting that watched over the chamber. Apparently the painting was of a man named Salazar who claimed to have had a hand in the founding of Hogwarts. With that trust Harri had also gained access to some of the knowledge hidden in the tomes stashed away in the Chamber.
With the combined guidance of Goku and Salazar's Painting, Harri underwent her training. She spent long days working on her stamina, her breaks filled with reading one of the many tomes in the Chamber or working on her wandless magic. Hermione would be the only one to leave the Chamber, though rarely, just to visit Professors to hand over school work and attend tests. Otherwise the brown haired witch studied alongside Harri, working on potions that would generally help Harri and her own wandless magic. When going up into the school for each meal became too hostile to risk Harri called upon the house elf Dobby for help.
(With how the other students were acting, it felt as though it were the end of the quidditch season all over again- only there were no Weasley Twin escorts to help protect Harri and Hermione from random hallway hexes like there had been in the past.)
At first, even with his enthusiasm to help Harri thanks to her having helped him in second year, Dobby had been a bit reluctant with the basilisks so close- the fact that they were technically under the school and therefore not a part of the rest of Hogwarts didn't help.
Only when prompted, and then assured that he wasn't being selfish or forward, did he reveal that it would simply be easier on him and on them if he simply became Harri's elf. That way he would have no obligations to Dumbledore, and the old wizard wouldn't be able to force out information on Harri and Hermione's whereabouts from him (and Dobby told them that the old man had already tried when he found out Dobby was bringing them food and keeping their shared dorm room clean. The only reason it didn't work was because Dobby was technically volunteering for the school until he found a witch or wizard that would hire him to look after their family. Only, he hadn't wanted to work for just any witch or wizard. His original plan was to wait for Harri to marry before he approached her about his services). So Harri agreed to have Dobby be her elf, with Hermione, Goku and Salazar as witnesses to the contract.
Basically, Dobby would be taking magic from Harri- an amount so small it was hardly noticeable- everyday because, as an elf, that's what was required to live. In return for this payment of magic, Dobby would cook and clean and keep all of Harrietta Potter's secrets safe.
Months passed in a blur. Harri got stronger, Hermione soon being coerced into helping the raven haired witch with her dodging and parrying and returning of various spells. When he'd hear of it Goku couldn't help but grow excited. Never mind how he couldn't be there in person to train with her, when she got to his world he wanted to challenge her to a spar. Not only did he want to test her but he also wanted to test himself against her. Would her magic have the same effect on him? Could he get used to it and surpass the limits her magic would try to set on him? Only after their spar would he then help Harri get even stronger, it wouldn't do if she couldn't at least beat Kuririn.
A letter arrived from Hagrid, delivered by an irate Hedwig who did not like the trip through the caves under Hogwarts. Harri had to skip her nightly call in order to go and see what the Gamekeeper wanted to show her.
That morning Goku woke to Harri's call- face paler than a fresh sheet of parchment and eyes so tired Goku was certain that she hadn't gotten any sleep. Then she'd told him what would be the first thing that she faced in the tournament.
Dragons.
It wasn't some creature as big as Shenlong, with a long slender body of scales and a mane of hair around it's head. No, her dragon was much smaller in comparison to Shenlong, but still big enough to pose a threat. Their bodies generally had a similar structure to lizards that have been super sized, but with all the lethality of a cat.
On a regular day these creatures were easily irritable and territorial and generally found humans to be great snacks. Fire breath, razor fangs and claws, large bat like wings protruding from it's back, a whip like tail- of which some species sport deadly spikes from- and they're at home on both the ground and in the air. As though none of that were dangerous enough, the ones who ran the tournament had gathered nesting mother dragons. Harri had seen their eggs herself, and witnessed just how angry these dragons were to be separated from them.
Goku may not have ever faced an angry dragon but he had come across plenty mother dinosaurs within his mountain range. Unless you're absolutely desperate for a meal, you don't cross a nesting mother dinosaur. There have been times when he'd come across one, her entire nest gone thanks to the first rainfall of the season, and the animal would loose all will to continue to live. If she didn't go out seeking death... then she'd let herself starve.
While not all creatures did this, it wasn't uncommon either. He'd seen monkeys carry around their little ones who had passed on- for days- all the while keening out their grief to the world.
The thought that these wizards were chancing this with the dragons- creatures Harri has told him have come from preserves- just for entertainment (because that's what this really was) was disgusting.
There wasn't much time left until the start of the first task. Goku helped Harri by showing her how to roll properly, quizzing her on when to fall purposely. With the Window active and hung around his neck, he'd gone out to hunt large dinosaurs to show Harri what to look for when trying to spot weakness in a creature's movement and how it could be taken advantage of- after which he'd follow his instructions repeated back to him from Harri to take the creature down. Then Harri would practice summoning her broom to herself, lifting off within the large Chamber, and practice falling from various heights, dodging some quaffles that she had borrowed for the occasion, and even summoning objects to her mid-flight to intercept said quaffles in order to stop them from hitting her.
Meanwhile Hermione worked fervently to make Harri potions she thought would help with the task: ice potion to have resistance to the fire, girding potion for extra energy, peperup potion to make sure Harri could focus, and even essence of dittany, skele-gro, wound cleaning, burn healing paste, and the general healing potion... the entire time Hermione insisted that Harri using her potions wasn't cheating because technically Harri didn't need to participate at all (though Harri and Goku were sure the brunette witch was trying to convince herself more than them as she said it).
While Harri was sure Hermione was over preparing Goku had simply agreed with Hermione that it was better than being under prepared. All of the extra potions that Hermione made were sent over to Goku. Since the potions had a time limit before they became useless Goku could use them freely this way, which helped to cut down his recovery time if he did get injured in some way, or were given to those Goku came across who needed it more.
Plenty of pictures of the fist task were taken by Hermione, who only remembered to take said pictures about half way through Harri's battle against her dragon- a Hungarian Horntail. Apparently the thing had tried to roast her, but failed thanks to Hermione's potions. Another image showed Harri on her broom summoning a large stone to herself to intercept the lunging dragon, transfiguring the stone into a large bola mid-flight to trip it up. The last image was of how the dragon broke free of a large metal-looking net just as Harri had flew down to gather the fake golden dragon egg out of the real nest.
Along with many others of the magical variety, Goku kept the pictures in a photo album Harri had given him for their birthday, and often marveled at how different the dragons of Harri's world were from the one in his. It was especially awe-inducing to see his friend battle such a creature and made him wonder if the Eternal Dragon would be up to a spar if it was ever wished for.
It was a little before Christmas in Harri's world when he was told of the dance she needed to attend. Then of the boy who'd asked Harri to go with him.
Apparently it had been the official Champion for Hogwarts who asked to go with her- the event happening right after the first task- saying that he was impressed by her strength and ability to survive and wanted to show to her and the rest of the school how they were both on good terms. Something along the lines of showing a unity of the school rather than the divide it was currently going through.
Personally it sounded suspicious to Goku. ...He immediately found himself hating the idea.
Unfortunately, by the time he'd found out, Harri had already agreed.
By the look that had been on Hermione's face at the time, Goku at least knew he wasn't the only one who thought it was odd. Through that shared look he also knew that the other witch would be looking out for Harri that night. It was an immediate relief. Since he couldn't do it himself, Hermione watching out for Harri was the best he could ask for. Especially since the alternative was no one.
As the night of the ball drew closer for Harri, Goku found himself with more information on the matter of her date. This Cedric who had asked Harri to the ball was actually a student who she had met several times before in the school infirmary. The wizard worked part time there with the mediwitch Madame Promfry. Harri mentioned how he was very good at tending to injuries. She knew because it was him who had initially prepped her arm to be fixed in second year after her encounter with the basilisk.
Maybe it was the way her tone changed as she said it. Or how she had glanced away from him shyly while she spoke. Perhaps even how her cheeks gained a rosy hue to them. Goku felt an increasing amount of stomach aches as he kept hearing about this Cedric and it was putting him ill at ease.
The Harri that spoke of these things seemed absolutely foreign and Goku wasn't sure how to handle it. But Harri seemed to look forward to the Christmas event- along with any other that allowed her to get to know the wizard more.
At one point Harri and Hermione both had been sure that the official Hogwarts Champion was in a relationship with a Ravenclaw already. It was Hermione who had asked about the Ravenclaw- a girl named Cho- for Harri. (Goku only found out about it because the two witches fought over whether or not Hermione should have done so in the first place and inevitably dragged him into it.) Apparently Cedric had answered that the relationship with Cho had only ever been as friends. (Contradictory to the scathing looks Hermione had spotted Cho give Harri when the raven haired witch began to leave the Chamber more often to go and see this Cedric- another argument point Goku was privy to.) Goku wasn't sure what any of that had to do with going to a dance that was supposed to be about school unity but he didn't like it.
Thanks to Kuririn, Goku was made painfully aware of just how much he hated sharing the little time he'd get to talk to Harri. With residing in the Chamber of Secrets under the school and making her own schedule Harri could call to talk to him at any time. Often they had spent hours with the Window open, propped up somewhere where they could still view one another, and simply train at the same time. He was starting to get used to it, being able to talk to her whenever he wanted and about whatever thought had come to mind in that moment. But with this Cedric suddenly around Harri, she didn't use the Window nearly as often. (Which meant he was sharing his time with Harri with some stranger and he hated it.)
Because this school dance was happening on Christmas, Goku received his present from Harri early that year. The present itself was quite lovely; deep blue arm bands with black stitched magic ruins on the inside that allowed the bands to get heavier as the wearer adjusted to the weight. Apparently it had been a project that Harri had needed Hermione's help on because Goku could smell the brunette witch's scent on one of the bands. But it was something like horror that struck him when Goku realized how Harri's very scent had changed.
While subtle, it had still gained a faint masculine taint to it- the scent of it like acid in his nose- and he knew that his childhood friend had spent far more time with that wizard that she was interested in than needed. Something in Goku's chest had twisted painfully at the knowledge and before he'd really processed it, he'd thrown lovely Christmas gift in the river for a thorough washing before he stuffed it among the other precious things he'd received from Harri in hopes of it absorbing her previous pure Harri scent.
Goku didn't like Cedric from the start. Now, Goku wasn't sure what he felt more- total loathing or... absolute envy. Either way he found himself battling against unpleasant emotions- ones he normally associated with the Monster in the Moon that took his Grandpa or the Dursleys and Dumbledore- whenever this Cedric was mentioned because he knew he wouldn't react well if they ever met in person ...and he wasn't so sure how Harri would take it if that ever happened.
Before Harri could catch on that something was wrong- her attention was spread very thin with all the things she needed to pay attention to all at once- the Christmas Ball was upon them.
That entire day he hadn't spoken to Harri once. As he watched the sun set Goku belatedly realized that this dance could very well wipe her out enough to not remember to call him after it. (He ignored the fact that Harri had never let exhaustion stop her from speaking to him before, too sour over it all to really consider it, and distracted by the chillingly haunting feeling that something terrible was going to happen that had him on edge for the last month or so.) Once the sun had set Goku went into his tent and attempted to get some sleep.
After tossing and turning for what felt like forever, Goku suddenly received a distressingly unhappy call just a few hours later. Harri had been in tears.
The dress she wore, he suspected, would have been quite beautiful at one point. It was an emerald green that matched Harri's eyes perfectly; the sleeves a long see-through silk that went down to her forearms in a bell shape, the skirt was solid silk panels that caught and reflected the light in a way that made it look like there were tiny diamonds all throughout it, and a green dragon- that looked remarkably like Shenlong- curled around her hips and wove it's way up and down her solid one piece bodice in a constant movement of flight mimicry. It hugged her body, which was starting to look more like an hourglass rather than some stick figure, complimenting it nicely.
However, there were tears down the skirt that went up to her bodice in places. The fabric was covered in mud and soaked with water so it hung heavily on her body. Even her hair, which had been done up in some sort of curly bun thing, was even messier than before, some of it looking to have been grabbed roughly. There were even the start of bruises on her pale skin.
While Goku was used to his friend's tears, that did nothing to sooth the hot anger that pulsed through him at the sight. He hadn't seen her cry since the incident with the basilisk and even then this crying seemed bone deep. Something in Harri was changed, and abruptly it reminded Goku of a time when they were younger- the night when Harri had lost faith in any adult in her life.
Before he could even get his mind to process the anger the sight induced in him, or even give a sign of recognition to her that he knew something bad had happened, Harri began to speak of her night.
Many times Goku felt anger at the people who constantly injured his friend, many times more he dreamt of serving justice on Harri's behalf before making sure something similar would never happen to her again. Somehow, none of that compared to the pure wrath that built up inside as she described the assault on her person that happened because some pompous bastard had believed that she belonged to them.
And despite his relief that Hermione had been able to get Harri out of there without too much injury- never in Goku's memory had he ever felt such a rage and incompetence with himself as he listened to the incident, unable to give his friend any of the hugs or reassurances that he so desperately wanted to.
Instead Goku quietly got the large red blanket Harri had given him from her Hogwarts dorm room during a previous year. (It was his favorite- just the right amount of fluffy and warm. He'd slept on it nightly within the tent. Her scent had long faded to be replaced with his own.) Goku sent the blanket through the mirror for Harri and instructed her to wrap it tightly around herself- the closest that he'd ever get to giving her an actual hug at the moment. It calmed Harri down immensely and Goku was glad for it.
Still Harri fell asleep that night with tears on her face.
In light of his friend needing him more than he needed to let off steam, Goku's temper had only simmered down to boil under his skin. As soon as Harri fell asleep the connection cut and he was reminded all at once why he was so angry.
Shakily he had stowed his Window Wood away for it's safety. Goku then got up and left his magical tent. He had gathered it all up within seconds and traveled to the nearest rocky outcrop that looked thick enough to take a decent beating.
His first instinct was to go around destroying everything in sight with his Kamehameha and watch as it obliterated things with satisfaction, but that wouldn't have provided the mindless outlet he was searching for. The second instinct was to go and hunt something down, to loose himself in the thrill that provided, but that would have only lasted until he caught his prey- and he wasn't feeling even remotely hungry at the moment.
It must have been hours that he stood there, attacking the stone like it had personally wronged him. The rock fell away under his fists like clay to a shovel. Goku steadily made a decent headway into the side of the rocky outcrop. He'd messily dug a small tunnel just large enough to fit himself in that was slowly curving downwards.
Eventually he was interrupted from his mindless slugging by Harri's light voice.
Knuckles ripped apart and bleeding made it difficult to reach into his shirt to take out the Window Wood. His fingers were now numb with cold, fat with lack of blood flow into them, and clumsy with lack of feeling. He didn't bother to look at his elbows and knees, just like he ignored the raw pain in his tail and feet. Without any proper light in the tunnel Goku made his way back out and angled himself so that the Window Wood would catch the last of the light from the setting sun.
Scared emerald eyes met his own dark brown hue. There were water marks down her cheeks, a tint of red still in her puffy eyes. Goku found himself easily giving her one of his most sunniest of smiles to be rewarded with a relieved, almost-smile, from his oldest friend. He was relieved to find her feeling better, though the very thought of why that thought filtered through his head made him want to get back to the mind numbing pummeling.
Somehow that feeling of dread he had only got worse as the year wore on. Impatiently Goku counted down the days before he could go search for the Dragonballs properly.
From the first task Harri had kept the golden egg she had taken. Apparently it held the clue as to what her second task was to be. From that clue, it was eventually worked out that something 'precious' of Harri's was going to be taken from her and held ransom underwater. She'd only have a single hour to find her item and bring it back or she'd loose it forever. When she'd resumed her training, it had taken a decisively more water-themed focus.
Considering that all of her precious things were either in the Chamber under the school- and inaccessible to anyone but herself and Hermione- or always on her person, they had assumed that this 'precious' thing of Harri's was to be another clue like the golden egg. Too late Harri discovered that wasn't to be the case. They had taken something. Or, someone. It was Hermione who had been kidnapped by the school staff.
For some reason Goku had a hard time keeping the smile off his face as Harri ranted her rage to him that night, explaining it all after the second task.
He knew for a fact that this was the first time Harri had done this- shouting loudly, pacing back and forth, occasionally destroying a piece of furniture that would be repaired to be destroyed again- and a fierce pride welled up within him as he listened to how she truly felt about the matter. Usually it was him or his Grandpa who got this angry- though never in front of Harri. (Once all that anger had been spent then time could be taken to verbalize it properly to Harri, in a way that wouldn't frighten her.) And she explained in detail how unhappy she was with her Headmaster and school.
(It was only later that Goku truly realized how Harri trusted him with how she felt. Being loud and angry- two things very much forbidden of Harri at the Dursley's- around him was a sign of that trust. A physical proof of trust that simply couldn't have been expressed with words.)
After the second task, Harri's training became more rigorous. With the spells she could do wandless, Harri worked on them being wordless. While he couldn't quite understand the difficulty of it, Goku supposed that it was similar to how Master Roshi set him and Kuririn in farmers fields and construction working so that base skills could be built upon. Harri kept up her physical workout, including Hermione firing spells at her at random in it's duration, but added a moment in the end to meditate with Goku to search for her Ki.
For some reason they'd run into a wall on that front- Harri couldn't seem to tap into her Ki whatsoever. He had tried to describe how Ki felt for himself, but Goku wasn't nearly as good with his words like Harri was. To her it sounded like he was describing part of what her magic felt like when she used certain branches of it.
As the day to Harri's final task rapidly approached, Goku made sure she showed him the proper forms that had been taught to them by Grandpa Gohan. He then had her repeat them with him for an hour before they stopped to stretch and meditate for the day.
While he didn't speak to Harri about it, Goku had begun to count the days before he could start the Dragonball hunt again, and checked with the Dragon Radar every night after speaking with her and every morning he awoke.
With the Red Ribbon army having been taken care of, Goku hoped that there wouldn't be any delays this time in the Dragonball's retrieval other than the fact that he wouldn't be allowed to use Nimbus to go get them. There would be a lot of walking for him to do and while he knew they were always scattered across the whole world... he still hoped the Dragonballs wouldn't be too far from each other.
At least this time he knew he'd be starting with his Grandpa's Dragonball already.
After making the last wish to the Eternal Dragon he'd managed to grab it at the last moment. Goku kept the four star ball within his magic pouch for maximum safety- not even the Radar could detect it from in there.
All Harri and Hermione knew of the last task was how it would deal with a maze. Harri had flown over the area where the maze grew once and then, at the insistence of Salazar's portrait, had asked a snake to check the area out for her. Apparently the hedge used to make the maze was a magical one and the snake had barely managed to return with it's life to deliver the message.
The day that Goku could start his search of the Dragonballs couldn't arrive fast enough.
Eventually the night came where Harri entered the final task. At first there had been a debate whether Harri should bring all her valuables or not with her, until the argument point became obsolete- who cares if they disqualify her for it, Harri hadn't wanted to participate in the first place- and Goku was told that Harri would just bring it all with her in her own specialty warded coin pouch.
As the night grew older Goku wondered if the decision was a good one.
The waiting to know what would happen had irritated him and even eating his anger away hadn't helped. So the tailed fighter moved his body from one stance to the next with his training weights on his wrists and practiced until well after his limbs felt as though they'd fall off in his attempt to exhaust himself enough to burn off the anxious energy.
Eventually he fell limp onto his bed, not even enough energy left in his body to wrap his favorite blanket around his shaking self, and stared up at the cloth ceiling of his magic tent with his mind still racing and wide wide awake. He thought of the trouble Harri could have found in the maze. Of the deadly trials she'd be made to face already. It wasn't hard to do. In fact, it was depressingly easy. All the creatures in her world that they had looked up and read about flashed across the forefront of his mind. (They'd used creatures twice already, why wouldn't there be more in a third task?) How each one had a special way it liked to kill it's victims... or 'play' with them before ending it.
Then he was reminded of how her opponents very well could have attacked her with their magic too. All the different ways in which witches and wizards battled against one another, could cause one another harm.
Mostly though Goku wanted to be fighting at Harri's side, making up for her lack of physical strength and making sure she'd survive the night. His stomach had tied itself into knots at the thought that he'd loose her like he'd lost his Grandpa- only he'd never actually know until he asked the Eternal Dragon about it because only Harri could open the Window to speak with him.
(Out of curiosity Hermione had tried once. She had to stop almost immediately upon the magical drain it was giving her, even with the Hogwarts laylines to help.)
At some point Goku must have fallen asleep for the next thing he knew he was blinking at the light that shone down on him through the window. His entire body ached from the previous night and his stomach felt as though it had started to eat him with how empty it was. A quiet groan left him as he sat up with his muscles screaming the entire way. Yet he still plucked the Window Wood from it's spot hung over his heart and lifted it's blank face to inspect.
An uncomfortable feeling had curled up in his gut. Unfortunately it was the one he'd come to associate with Harri's well being during this time of the year. Only this time it felt ten times worse because it had been built up with that dreaded chilly feeling since the start of the Tournament. He was certain something bad had happened to her and with so many in her world out for her head he figured it was a valid feeling, not even counting how many times she'd almost been killed so far (this year alone was nearly record-breaking in that regard).
Slowly Goku let the Window Wood settle against his chest once more and instead reached for the dragon radar on the nightstand beside the bed. It'd become a habit by now to check the device every new morning and night. With the radar placed on the nightstand there wasn't a chance for Goku to misplace it and have the start of his search for the Dragonballs delayed.
For a moment his thumb hovered over the power button as he stared at the black screen. Then it clicked down and the screen powered on with a low buzz that Goku noticed all technology tended to have.
The screen flickered as though it had bad reception, all the magic in the tent putting it off, but it worked enough for Goku to see for himself if it was able to pick up on any Dragonballs which was good enough for him. For a moment his heart skipped a beat as he waited. Then the radar buzzed again and the screen was still blank. No small dots came to life to blink at him, informing him of their presence. He let out a disappointed huff and turned off the radar before he replaced it on the nightstand.
With a roar that made him wince with pain Goku's stomach let him know once again of it's threat upon his person. There was only one other time Goku could recall being so hungry. When he'd crossed a desert on foot with Bulma and Oolong and he'd had to go several days without food at a time. It had been torture for him and while most of his memory was fogged by the hunger he'd felt at the time he knew that he'd been irritable when he'd been spoken to and only truly focused when a stray animal had been unlucky enough to get within range of his senses.
He scooted off of the bed and made his way towards a decorated chest in the kitchen. As soon as he opened it a blast of cold air hit his face that sent a shiver down his spine.
Unlike the tent itself the inside of this chest could not be made bigger on the inside. He remembered how Harri and Hermione had told him about it in great detail. The fact they couldn't get the inside to be bigger really seemed to irk them. But all he had really retained from it was how the decorations around the chest made for it to act as an ice box but it also negated other types of magic that would effect the inside of the chest itself.
From the cold Goku pulled out several slabs of meat he had stored in there the previous day for breakfast. He inspected the cold cuts and knew almost immediately that it would only be enough to tide him over until he'd caught something fresh.
Just as he'd sat back after eating his warmed food a tiny broken voice caught his attention. Immediately lifting up his Window Wood to see, Goku let out a relieved breath at the sight of Harri on the other side- only for it to freeze in his lungs as he took in the damage she'd sustained.
Harri was in the Hogwart's hospital wing. He could tell from the frame of the bed, the white curtains that enclosed it, and even the color of the stone wall behind her.
There was a bandage wrapped around her head and neck. He couldn't see her hands or arms and suspected the bandages wrapped under her clothes too, based on her posture. A cream of some sort had been smeared around her right eye and on both cheeks and from what he could tell there were dark bruises that laid underneath. Legs that were tucked under a light blue bed cover were trapped under the weight of a large black dog that had draped itself over her and now looked at the Window Wood with wide curious eyes.
Goku's gaze scanned over the mangy dog dismissively, instead focusing on how his childhood friend's green eyes glittered with unshed tears. The sight was enough for ice to spread over his insides.
Something had happened alright. Something bad. It forced a whine out of his throat that was nearly silent. Not for the first time, Goku wished he could go through the Window as he pleased so he could check on Harri himself- then he'd go and find whomever dared to do this with the intention to make sure it would never happen again.
"He's back," was the first thing out of Harri's mouth. Her lip wobbled at the proclamation and the threat of tears became more prominent. "Voldemort. He's back. No one will believe me."
Goku didn't even need to ask.
A/N: Alright, so just in case it's not clear; if a major plot point (like some dying) doesn't get mentioned then you can assume that whatever happens in canon has happened in the story. If not, then it will get mentioned or expanded upon in a chapter at some point.
