Bones is haunted by Spock's ghost. He feels Spock's presence off and on throughout the day, periodically knows beyond doubt what the Vulcan would say or do, craves foods he's never eaten and Vulcan mantras drift through his head. He latches on to the idea of returning Spock's soul like a desperate man, but each step of Spock's return brings its own trials and they rub him raw.

McCoy has locked himself in his office after the incident on Deneva led to him temporarily blinding Spock. Jim arrives to talk the good doctor out of sulking.
