Quest! Where is Morgan´s Mother?
Chapter 1: Soup with friends.
The evening sun cast a warm orange glow over the campsite, everyone was preparing to have dinner and rest for the time being, everyone but Morgan.
Using the same robe as her father, she sat alone in front of her father tent, she had the habit to wait for him when he was in a war meeting, Robin was caring as ever, she could tell that he was doting her, treating her as the most valuable jewel, taking care of her health as if his very life depended on it, therefore, she could not understand how seeing that her father treated everyone with affection and respect, her with the most unquestionable love and dedication, there was something that many brutes in the camp questioned and that unfortunately sometimes she herself felt guilty thinking the same about it.
"Dad... do you even have any low instinct or desire for any girl around here?" murmured Morgan, shortly after that thought she began to kick ashamed of what she said "No! wait! my dad is only mine for now! YOU HAR-" she stopped middway "No! sorry mom! i didn't mean it! Hurry up and seduce dad already!" she wrinkled her nose, Lissa and Cordelia who were approaching saw her, thinking that it was adorable "Wait! i take it back! if you guys get all mushy, i want to be the older sister, not the younger one!"
Lissa sat down next to Morgan, accompanied by Cordelia and Maribelle. "What's up, pudding? You seem even more restless than usual. Did your dad take away dessert again for bothering Freddie?"
Morgan sighed in response. "No, Lissa... it's just that... it's been a long time, and I'm starting to worry."
Lissa looked at her with a hint of concern. "Worry about what?" she asked as the other girls began to eat.
"Well," Morgan began, "I don't want to meddle in my dad's life, but I'm starting to wonder... I haven't seen him particularly affectionate with any woman, and I still can't remember my mother... so I'm wondering if he had a shotgun wedding because he got her pregnant."
The girls all spit out their food and coughed simultaneously upon hearing that last sentence. Maribelle seemed especially irritated, while Lissa and Cordelia appeared more embarrassed by the suggestion.
"Oh, by the sacred skies of Naga, I hope you're joking!" Maribelle exclaimed. "First of all, a young lady your age shouldn't even be thinking about such lascivious acts, let alone wondering if her father is doing them! AND CERTAINLY NOT WISHING FOR HIM TO DO THEM!" She wiped her face as the others tried to catch their breath. "Furthermore, Lord Robin wouldn't be a brutish barbarian, engaging in such base behavior. I don't even think a streetwalker would be worthy of his presence."
"You..." Lissa coughed. "...couldn't hold back, could you?" She glanced at Morgan for a moment. "Heavens... I..." She looked at her plate and saw pieces of eggplant in her soup. Maribelle and she exchanged glances for a moment, and the noblewoman quickly used her fork to remove said eggplant from her plate. "...I'm not sure, Morgan. It could be anyone at this point." They left their bowls on the floor while trying to compose themselves from the shock.
"Is my dad a ladies' man?" Morgan innocently asked.
"Well, he is, unwittingly," Cordelia said as she continued with her meal. "I mean, not many men understand what you're talking about."
"Or that they can understand what you mean with their poor vocabulary?" Maribelle continued.
"Or they're so gentle while sweetly reprimanding you..." Lissa finished, causing all three of them to heave a long sigh before bursting into laughter.
"Oh, goddess! So Sumia was right about the Chrom and Robin fan clubs existing?" Lissa asked between laughs.
"Indeed, though I don't entirely approve of their existence, they are much better than that unholy and putrid club that used to pair them up," Maribelle replied.
"I don't want that mental image, thank you!" Lissa exclaimed.
"Wh-What?! Lord Chrom and L-Lord Robin?!" Cordelia looked horrified by such a suggestion, her concern shifted toward what Morgan might think, but the girl seemed confused.
"What? What do my dad and Lord Chrom have?" she innocently wondered.
"Interesting, so you know about the birds and the bees, but not about that dirty world," Maribelle took out her fan to calm the flush on her face. "You certainly have Lord Robin's innocence and knowledge, but I dare say the missing information was ensured by your dear mother to protect your innocence."
"My mother..." Morgan's gaze became fixed on Maribelle.
"Psst! I know what you're thinking, it's a bad idea," Lissa whispered.
"Eh? Why?" Morgan asked.
"What's going on? It's impolite to whisper, dears," Maribelle looked at them, raising an eyebrow.
"Are you sure it's a bad idea?" Morgan whispered.
"Definitely. She might not use the umbrella, but that fan hurts ten times more, believe me, from personal experience," Lissa whispered back.
"Oh, for all the heavens, just say it already!" Maribelle raised her voice.
"Ah! Yes, ma'am! Sorry, ma'am! I'll say it, ma'am!" Morgan stood up suddenly, standing at attention as she looked at Maribelle. "I was wondering if by any chance... possibly... statistically... maybe... you could be my mother?" She almost whispered the last part.
Maribelle froze for a moment, while Lissa and Cordelia exchanged worried glances, unsure of how Maribelle would respond.
"M-Maribelle, w-wait, she's-" Lissa tried to cover for Morgan, but Maribelle silenced her by snapping her fan shut.
"Hmmm..." Maribelle stood up, and Morgan grew nervous. She was still standing rigidly, waiting for her response. Maribelle used her fan to move Morgan's face from side to side, inspected her posture, and tapped her stomach lightly before reaching into her bag.
"M-Maribelle? Darling? You're scaring me," Lissa said.
"Huh? Wh-what's h-" Morgan tried to ask but felt something on top of her head.
The girls watched in amazement as Maribelle carefully placed a book on Morgan's head, took a few steps back to get a better view.
Morgan tried to turn her head to see the noblewoman, who had an intrigued look on her face.
"Well, what are you waiting for, dear? Walk," Maribelle said, using her fan again.
"Ah! Y-yes!" Morgan carefully began to walk, the book wobbling but not falling from her head. She walked a few feet away from Maribelle, then turned back, stopping when she was close to the noblewoman. Lissa and Cordelia were fascinated by the scene.
"Mmmm... interesting," Maribelle said as she removed the book, placed it back in her bag, and returned to her seat next to Lissa. The girls were stunned by what they had just witnessed – somehow, Morgan had pulled it off?
"...So?" Lissa cautiously chose her words.
"Well, what, dear?" Maribelle replied.
"She... could be... you know..." Lissa tried to articulate the missing words with her hands and briefly looked at Maribelle's stomach, earning herself a light fan tap in the process.
"Wait, I have another, more important question, in fact, there are two," Cordelia raised her hand. Maribelle indicated with her fan that she should proceed. "So, your weakness is sweet, helpless girls? Where has that information been during the twenty years we've known each other?" With that, she received a light tap on the nose, causing Cordelia to fall out of her seat.
"Har har, very witty, you two," Maribelle sighed as she picked up her bowl again. "I had certainly noticed her posture... is terribly similar to her father's," she sighed, somewhat annoyed. "But even so, even with her amnesia, she can move like that, as if she's been trained for it. Certainly... it intrigues me such a possibility..." The three of them were expectant of what they were hearing. "...BUT I REFUSE TO BELIEVE YOU THINK I HAD A SHOTGUN WEDDING BECAUSE YOUR FATHER COULDN'T KEEP HIS THING IN HIS PANTS!" She blushed at what she said. "ESPECIALLY THE POSSIBILITY THAT A FUTURE VERSION OF ME WOULD BE SO UNIMAGINABLY VULGAR!" She said as she continued eating, and the three girls sighed with small laughs.
"By the way, why do you think it was a shotgun wedding?" Lissa asked.
"Well... I remember my father's stories... and he said Lucina was born 2 years after the war with Plegia, and I was born a year after the war against Walhart..." Morgan did mental math. "In this timeline, the war ended a few weeks ago... so in the next few months, I should be conc—" Maribelle snapped her fan shut again. "—ev...Eh... forget that, I should be born at the fifht month of the next year."
"Wow... so..." Lissa tried to say it, but the faces of the other girls showed concern. "...so... someone in the camp is three months pregnant?"
"And Robin hasn't said anything? Nor Morgan's mother?" Maribelle commented, worried about what she had heard.
"I'm more surprised at how bold those two are," Cordelia blushed. "It's inconceivable that this happened in just two months in Chon'sin, even with such a short war... that's—"
"Yes, that's also strange," Morgan interrupted her comment. "I mean, I remember the war against Walhart lasted six years."
"Huh?" The three of them were in shock, responding in unison. "Wait... darling," Maribelle was the quickest to react, "are you sure about that?"
"Uh? Well, of course I know! Look!" she proudly said as she lifted her sleeve, revealing a stitched message inside the robe she was wearing that read, "For my dear girl, from your father. Happy Birthday," with the date of the fifth day of the fifth month. "Clever, isn't it?"
The girls were stunned, and Maribelle quickly took out a notebook while Cordelia confirmed the details.
"Wait, then... what do we take into account?" Lissa asked.
"Mmm... well, Lucina didn't mention anything about Morgan in her timeline, but Morgan mentions birthdays and similar dates from stories of other children who come from the future... so... the age difference?" Maribelle made a note. "Seven years... so if the war with Walhart only lasted, what, four months?" she wanted to be sure everything was correctly detailed "Given that assumption... dear, did your father tell you when the war started specifically?" Maribelle asked.
"Huh? Well, it's funny because he said it officially began and ended on my birthday," Morgan chuckled timidly. "He used to tell me that the first star he saw in the sky after the war its named 'Morgana', and since i was born the day the war ended, i was a constant remainder that I am his starlight, the light he was searching for after the conflict.t"
"Oh, for heaven's sake, ROBIN! STOP BEING SUCH A GOOD FATHER! YOU'RE MAKING THIS TOO DIFFICULT!" they all thought at the same time.
"Ahem! Yes, yes, yes, wonderful, dear," Maribelle tried to divert her from the topic. "Let's see... so..."
"Seven years... it's only been two years and seven months since Lucina's birth in this timeline.. so..." Cordelia looked at Lissa, who continued that line of thought.
"Robin is not a scoundrel... oh... I can't believe I thought so poorly of him," Lissa said somewhat sadly.
"We rushed to judgment too quickly, dear... although, given the circumstances, I think not knowing for sure how time travel works or how it's structured, there are at least four or five years before our dear Morgan is born in this timeline," Maribelle said in relief. "Haaaah... so..."
"Right..." Lissa understood what she wanted to say.
"I see..." Cordelia followed behind Lissa.
"We still don't know who Morgan's mother is in that case!" they all thought in unison.
"Eh? Are you okay, girls?" Sully arrived with them, followed by Sumia, Olivia, Panne, and Nowi.
"Huh? And the guys? Weren't we supposed to meet for a little chat to—" Lissa looked behind Panne, seeing Vaike arm-wrestling another recruit while Virion was scolded by Cherche, and Gregor seemed to be having fun betting on the arm-wrestling contest, "—ogether... haaaaah..."
"Yeah, apparently it's 'guys' night' among some of the soldiers, and those muscleheads aren't interested in missing out on the excitement," Sully commented as she took her seat.
"They're too noisy for my taste," Panne remarked.
"And not any fun," Nowi grumbled. "They won't let me drink!"
"And I certainly don't want to bet with Vaike, Gregor, and Virion around," Sumia commented. "I tried offering alternative activities, but they seem more interested in mak—" there was a loud noise, and they all turned to see Vaike on the floor, with Lon'qu raising a victorious fist, and the table was split in half, "—ing a fool of themselves..."
"I-I can't stand how they waste drinks and money like that," Olivia said angrily. "They're a bad influence on the boys! They'll teach them to be vulgar if Lucina, Cynthia, Henry, Gaius, Gerome, and Laurent stay to watch them." Cordelia, Lissa, and Maribelle looked at each other and then at Morgan.
"...What?" she asked as she played with one of her hair strands.
"...What happened while we were away?" Sully asked as they began to eat.
Lissa waited for a moment, while Maribelle didn't know how to respond, and with a smile, the princess just shrugged, "I don't know, Morgan, do you want to fill everyone in on what we were talking about?"
"Huh? Oh... well," she fixed her hair, "we were talking about whether my dad would ever get married to my mom, but we dont know who she is and now we've discovered that none of you could be pregnant and have a shotgun wedding with him." With that last line, the same thing happened again: all of them except Panne and Nowi looked disturbed and coughed violently.
"W-Wh-What?! You! What... WH-WHAT HAVE YOU TAUGHT THE LITTLE MORGAN?!" Sumia said angrily as she struggled to maintain her composure.
Morgan puffed up her cheeks. "I'm not little, Aunt Sumia! I'm already big, I can read strategy and tactics texts all by myself 3," she proudly declared.
"...Well, Morgan, you see, being an adult is..." Sully was getting up but was halted by a shocked Sumia, who placed her hand on Sully's shoulder and slowly shook her head; it seemed something had died within her. Sully sighed and returned to her seat.
"Uh-uh? Well... th-that's not..." Olivia tried to respond, but again, Sumia's deadpan stare prevented anyone from saying anything.
"...Morgan..." Sumia sighed. "Yep, you're right, forgive me; you're no longer a little girl." This made Morgan swell with pride. "...That means I won't allow you to use your father's lap to snuggle anymore."
"Eeeeh! But that's not fair!" She puffed up her cheeks again. "Daddy said it was okay until we found out who my mom was!"
"Alright, alright, let's do this..." Despite her typically warm and patient demeanor, Sumia's expression suddenly turned grim. "Tell me who´s the... unfortunate soul that put these ideas into your head... I'll make sure that soul takes a nice walk to clear their thoughts...talking about... shotgun weddings... to little Morgan is..."
"Ah! Wait, wait! Sumia! It's a misunderstanding!" Lissa interjected, waving her arms. "Let me explain from the beginning!"
Lissa began explaining everything, and once again, the only ones seemingly not grasping the implications were Morgan, Panne, and Nowi.
"I-I see... so that's what was bothering little Morgan..." Olivia sighed in relief.
"Gosh, you almost had me fooled there... although it's refreshing to see her worried face once in a while," Sully commented.
"...That sounds terrible," Sumia said, looking a bit annoyed.
"Oh, don't get me wrong... I just mean... Morgan acts so serious and professional, almost like Robin. Knowing she has concerns makes her look sweet, doesn't it?" Sully said, as the group watched Morgan now attempting to braid her bangs.
"Uh? Do I really look like Dad?" She asked innocently.
"In several ways, it's just that-" Cordelia tried to explain, but Nowi raised her hand.
"Sorry, I don't get it! What's the problem here?" She asked while putting her bowl aside.
"These are topics that only concern man-spawn, I don't see what the issue is," Panne said, finishing her soup in one gulp, then licking her lips. "I guess, unlike the Taguel, you folks are in heat all year long, so-"
"T-The problem isn't that, Panne," Lissa interrupted with a red face, shared by most of the others present. "It's just... well... it's a societal thing we have!"
"Y-Y-Yeah! It's different stuff!" Cordelia continued. "Th-The point here is that Morgan doesn't remember who her mother is, and sometimes that makes her feel lonely, so-"
Huh? No, it's not like that," Morgan interrupted. "Well, it stinks that I can't remember something more about my past but dad, but... I haven't felt alone all this time... in fact, I'm grateful to everyone here." She said somewhat embarrassed. "Maribelle and Lissa take care of me when Dad isn't around, Aunt Cordelia and Sumia teach me interesting things about pegasi, Olivia, Nowi, and Panne tell me fascinating stories all the time... every member of the Shepherds has taken care of me and kept me company, so... I'm very thankful to be treated this way... not because I'm Robin's daughter... but because you're all very kind people."
Everyone fell into silence except Nowi, who was still chewing her food.
Lissa stood up, took her by the arm, and had her sit with her at her place, then hugged her and cuddled with her.
"...What?" Lissa asked as everyone else looked at her. "This is the natural reaction after hearing something like that, isn't it?" There was a moment of silence before they all slowly let out some giggles.
"Yeah, you're right, it's just that... we're somewhat overwhelmed by her sincerity," Cordelia said as she wiped away some tears.
"But why are you surprised?" Nowi asked with her mouth full. "The Shepherds are pretty nice and gentle and nice, so why are you surprised when she says something like that?"
"Well, it's rare to see someone be so sincere in human societies, even in Chon'sin or Ylisstol, we're not usually so open about what we think," Sully remarked.
"Well, I know two people who are very open, one is in my arms, and the other is talking to my brother," Lissa said as she stroked Morgan's hair with her cheeks. "Hey, why are you so fluffy?"
"I don't know," Morgan giggled. "Aunt Lissa, stop, you're tickling me."
"It's incredible that despite having hair so similar to Robin's, they're worlds apart," Maribelle commented. "I'm surprised that living with a man, her hair is so manageable, silky, and healthy, it's only similar in color to Robin's white hair."
"Mmmm... Robin doesn't have such bad hair; now Chrom, on the other hand, does have somewhat messy hair," Lissa chuckled. "Maybe Morgan inherited her beautiful hair from her mother?"
"Beautiful hair..." Cordelia said, taking a strand of her own.
"So lustrous..." Olivia murmured, doing the same as Cordelia.
"So silky..." Sumia added, thinking about everyone present.
"Welllllllllllll, I'd say more than inheriting her mother's hair, it's a combination of both, isn't it?" Lissa said as she now stroked Morgan's cheeks. "Beautiful hair, smooth and soft skin, she could practically be anyone from here, right?"
"Well... if we're talking about hair and skin..." Sumia looked at her dear friend Cordelia, who seemed lost in thought about something until their eyes met. Quickly, the Pegasus Knight understood what she was implying and blushed at the thought. "Cordelia, didn't you used to tell me how easy it was to care for your hair? And how smooth your skin was?"
"Huh? Me? N-no... n-no way, I..." She blushed, with her hands on her cheeks. Robin certainly helped her forget the crush she had on Chrom, which was fortunate as Sumia married the prince shortly afterward. But could she imagine Robin having a romance with her, especially now that they had a family? Her gaze wandered into fantasies she couldn't confess. "I... n-no! It's too soon for anything like that!"
"Well, theres five years to do something... so... it could be you," Lissa said with a mischievous grin.
"But, if we're talking about skin, I have the best skin," Nowi said as she finished her bowl.
They all waited expectantly for some argument, but the girl just stared at them in confusion.
"Well... it's possible?" Sumia said somewhat incredulous. "But... shouldn't we see something like green hair or pointy ears? And is it physically possible?" Nowi seemed puzzled, and they all waited for her to respond.
"But... it's not the same..." Nowi began. "Pure manaketes are born with green hair... but when we mate with humans... it's difficult but possible... I remember seeing other manaketes with different hair, and besides, when we're very young, our ears don't grow until a few decades later!"
"...So Robin could..." Lissa swallowed hard.
"...Someone get a Dragonstone... NOW," Sumia spoke with such a tone that Sully and Olivia shivered.
"Nah, it's not necessary," Nowi said nonchalantly. "We have to get our first Dragonstone from the mountains to transform before using others, without that, we can't do it."
"...Dear... sweet, my little Morgan, by any chance do you have anything resembling what Aunt Nowi is talking about among your belongings?" Sumia asked.
"Uh? Na-ah, Aunt Sumia, you were there, you saw me when I came into the world! I didn't have anything-nothing! Just what I was wearing and a book, nothing else," Morgan replied.
"So... we're back where we started..." Lissa sighed, followed by many of the girls.
Sully chuckled as she chewed her meat stubbornly. "I don't see what the problem is. I mean, it's not like Morgan can't just ask, right?"
"Bubbles isn't that closed off," Gaius appeared behind Sumia, handing her a small bag, then strolled around the circle while playing with his lollipop. "Interesting conversation you ladies are having. Mind if I join in on unraveling this mystery?" he asked, earning some raised eyebrows, but judging by the exchanged glances, they didn't seem opposed. "Well, if you'll allow me to opine, Bubbles isn't known for being closed off. In fact, we can all attest that, unlike other tacticians, his open-door policy is famous among us," he commented as he passed behind the girls, handing out small bags of candy. Lissa guessed it was a little bribe; when he handed her own bag, she realized they were honey candies. "But, ladies, I think there's a topic Robin finds hard to discuss, and indeed, she's the one who should know more about Bubbles than anyone else, even himself, don't you think?"
"...You're not suggesting that... we ask her specifically who she thinks Morgan's mother might be, are you?" Sumia asked.
"Sunshine may be intimidating, I admit Stumbles," Gaius said boldly, "But can you honestly say we can move forward without her?"
"Yes, we'd be moving straight into the grave," Sully said incredulously. "If she heard this, she'd surely curse the unfortunate soul who holds the answer."
"Well, Tharja was a bit frustrated when we found out about Morgan," Nowi said. "She seemed sad to see Robin as a dad."
"Well, that's obvious, isn't it?" Sumia continued. "That woman looked pretty angry when other girls got close to Robin during the festivals in Ylisstol. I can't imagine what went through her mind at the possibility of Robin being intimate with someone else."
"Well, yeah, Sunshine is a bit rough around the edges, but I don't think anything bad would happen if we tried," Gaius said while playing with Morgan. He was making pigtails with her hair, and Morgan allowed him to play with her hair because he gave her the same bribe as the others. "In fact, it seems dangerous to discuss such an important topic about Bubbles without her finding out."
"What are you doing?" Lissa asked.
"Mmm... they mentioned something about hair... I just want to compare..."
"Eh? Eh? What?" Lissa could see how Gaius was trying to style Morgan's hair like hers.
"Mmmm... Morgan, you're about thirteen, right?" Morgan nodded in response. "...Do you happen to have any paintings from that age? Wait, Twinkles must have some paintings of you at that age, right?"
"...You... you..." Maribelle tried to speak, but she didn't know how to respond. It was evident that due to Gaius's carefree nature, it was difficult to take him seriously. Still, implying what he was saying could hurt Lissa or Morgan if it was just a joke. "...heh... are you sure you want to test my patience?"
"I guess not," Gaius gave up, letting go of Morgan's hair.
"Will you call her?" Lissa asked.
"Do I have to? I just came to annoy a bit and leave the sweets," Gaius replied.
"Why bring these for everyone, though?" Cordelia asked.
"Bubbles' request, we're far from the ports, and he knows you're tired, so he hopes your favorite sweets will lift your spirits, all of you," he said as he walked toward Sumia and bowed. "Stumbles, Blue says he´s almost done, I'll go tell him where you and the group are" with that, he left the group.
"...Aunt Tharja kinda scares me," Morgan said.
"She scares me too, honey... she definitely does..." Lissa said, causing the group to nervously chuckle. "And if she were your mom? Would you be scared?"
"Maybe if she were angry, who wouldn't be scared of their mom like that? I'm sure no one wants to see their mom angry in any situation."
Lissa glanced at Nowi and Olivia; it was hard to see them as mothers, let alone angry ones. "Well, I suppose there are some exceptions."
"But then again, we're considering asking Tharja?" Cordelia asked, alarmed by the implications that would entail.
"Do you have something against Aunt Tharja?" Morgan asked.
"Of course not, in fact, I think I speak for all of us here when I say we have great respect for her," Cordelia commented.
"Y-Yes... she's a bit terrifying... and it's... well, creepy how she follows Robin everywhere... but, getting to know her better, she could be a great person; we just need to strip away the layers of hexes and shadows she has, and she's a great friend," Lissa said, trying to choose her words carefully. The last time she said something unfavorable about her, she felt like something was following her for a week.
"Alright, maybe I can help if you'll allow me," Panne said, placing her bowl on the floor.
"How would you do that?"
"According to Robin, it's a... privacy invasion," she said, pointing at her nose. "Taguels have a keen sense of smell. In my case, I used mine to locate the man-spawn who was close to the Exalt. Every living being tends to smell like their family. Perhaps I can find out who Morgan's mother is by sniffing around enough."
Everyone stopped at that moment, thinking that Panne could do that was absurd.
"W-W-WAIT A MINUTE! C-CAN YOU REALLY DO THAT?" Sumia asked.
"Uh? I just said so, didn't I?"
"N-No... it's just... I mean, can you really find her mother like that? Doesn't everyone have a different scent? How does that even make sense?"
"Our offspring are a combination of our blood and flesh. Your child, for example, has Chrom and your blood and flesh. That's why when she said she was your daughter, I didn't doubt it; she smelled like both of you," Panne looked at Morgan. "So far, I've only partially smelled Robin's scent on you, but perhaps if I smell enough, I can find out who you're looking for."
"If you smell me... you'll know who my mother is..." Morgan could feel her heart racing. Looking at the other girls, some blushed at the idea of becoming intimate with Robin, while others didn't know how to react. "I... I want to give it a try... but..."
"But?" Lissa asked.
"Well... nothing would make me happier than knowing! I mean, we could spend more time together! I could ask her how she fell in love with Dad, find out if I have anything to worry about as I grow up, have fun dates, and learn new things!... But..." she sighed. "I really want to know, but I feel that if Panne finds out who my mom is like this... it might bother you all..."
"Eh? I don't understand, Morgan..."
"Yes! I mean... this started as something half-serious. It's fun to play with the expectation of who my mom might be," she looked at Maribelle's bag, "but... you all said that I'd be born in a few years, so... you're supposed to have more time to continue with your lives when we return. If Panne can find out who my mom is... it would be like forcing her to love my dad... I don't want something like that to happen... that wouldn't be real love..."
They fell silent for a moment, exchanged glances, and looked at Morgan.
Why did they feel so bad seeing her like this? It was as if they had all forgotten how serious it was. Sure, Morgan occasionally acted like a spoiled little girl, but they forgot how important she was. She always played with it and liked to tease them in a friendly way, but for some reason, what she said made them feel really bad.
It made them feel awful.
Little Morgan, that special girl who brightened their lives with her antics, supported and helped them so sweetly, the one who refused to seem sad or disappointed, the one who was not only important in their lives but also hurt their souls with what she said. It seemed she was afraid that one of them would reject the idea that she was their little daughter from the future.
"To hell with it!" Sully shouted as she got up, approached Morgan, and put her hand on her head. "Listen up because I'll only say it once. I'm not smart, I can be rough, and I certainly don't see myself as a mother in the future... heh... I don't even see myself married or as a wife," Morgan looked worried, but Sully smiled with a slight blush on her face. "But... if it turns out you're my daughter, well, that means Robin did a damn good job making me happy if that happens. I promise I won't be bothered if that's the case, and I'll do my best to raise you, little pumpkin..."
"NOWI TOO!" She lunged at Morgan. "NOWI PROMISE NOT TO BE BOTHERED IF THAT'S TRUE! I ALWAYS WANTED TO HAVE A FAMILY! AND MORGAN SEEMS LIKE THE PERFECT DAUGHTER TO ME! I WON'T LET ANYONE MAKE YOU SAD! THEY'LL HAVE TO DEAL WITH ME!" She puffed up her cheeks.
"...Mpphf! And to think that the lower class spoke before me... shameful!" Maribelle said, hiding her lips behind her fan. "... Morgan, you're a mess in many ways, but rest assured that if you were my daughter, there would be no greater noble achievement than having you as mine."
"I think I speak for all of us when I say we love you, Morgan," Lissa said, hugging her tighter. "If you were my daughter... that would mean I always have one of my best friends nearby... and I could brag to Chrom about how adorable you are!" she said with a laugh.
"I... I..." Moved by what they were telling her, Morgan could barely hold back her tears.
"It's not time to cry," Panne said, turning to the other girls, who seemed equally moved as Morgan. "I suppose I have your permission?" They all nodded.
"If that's the case... then please do it!" Morgan said excitedly.
"...Very well, if you allow me." Panne approached, and even though Nowi was still excited, she allowed Morgan to stand and face Panne. She removed her robe and began to smell her neck, hair, and arms.
Panne was very focused on her task. At first, she smelled the places you'd expect, but then she smelled between her fingers, ears, palms, and even lifted her shirt to smell her stomach and back.
Everyone was waiting for her to say something. It took a few minutes until she finally stopped.
"...and... and?" Lissa asked.
"...bath."
"Eh?"
"I said bath, you smell like too much soap, flowers, and... sweets?" She crossed her arms thoughtfully. "Your clothes smell a lot like Robin and other things, ink, paper, dirt, but your skin has a certain different scent..."
"Oh? W-well... it's just that... Say'ri allowed us to use some of the relaxing saunas... so... sorry..."
"Ahh... my heart..." Lissa said, her hand on her chest. "Why did it take you so long to say that?"
"It's not easy to detect someone else's essence," Panne said as she wiped her nose. "If you'd like, I could try again another day, but you have to be less clean, be more like yourself." She took her seat as the others sighed.
"W-Well, the good thing is that we now have a way to find out, right?" Sumia clapped her hands. "It would be nice to be able to check later."
"I suppose I could try again another day, but there's something you should know," Panne said. "There's a possibility that I won't know who it is. I know all of you and have gotten used to your scents, but if the mother isn't someone from this group, I won't be able to find her."
"Thank you, Panne. We'll have better luck next time," Morgan said with a smile.
"Well, thanks to all of you! I feel much better," Morgan said with a laugh.
"You're welcome, Morgan," Lissa said as the girl sat beside her. "You can always count on us."
"Indeed, my dear, there's no need to worry," Maribelle said. "Although I must admit, it's been quite an emotional night for my fragile heart."
"Hey, what are you all talking about?" They turned to see the man Morgan adored approaching. Robin moved closer to his daughter, hiding her face with her hood, then hugged her and tickled her. "Have you devised another scheme to find out where Gaius keeps his best sweets?"
"Haha! Of course not, Dad!" Morgan said with laughter. "Besides, he´s gotten better at hiding them."
"Oh? So what are you up to with the other girls?" Robin carried Morgan like a princess to her seat. "Maybe you'd like to reconsider what you're telling me? I have many witnesses to your recent shenanigans," he said as they both laughed. "I'm sorry, ladies, the meeting took longer than expected. Thanks for keeping Morgan company."
"N-No problem, Robin, it's nice to be with Morgan," Olivia said blushing.
"Y-Yeah, it's always great being with her," Sully added, equally uncomfortable.
"Indeed, being with this girl is never boring," Maribelle said.
"Uh, what's going on with you all, girls? You look a bit... embarrassed?"
"Well, it's been a long night, Robin," Sumia commented. "There's just been a lot to digest, and Morgan has opened our eyes to the expectations we have for the future."
"Yeah, after all, we just finished the war with Walhart, so we can only hope for better things," Sully said while eating one of the sweets. "Although I find it a bit childish that you're trying to bribe us with sweets to keep going."
"Oh... haha, sorry, it's all I could get," Robin replied, somewhat embarrassed. "I wanted to see if we could go to some hot springs on the way to the port, but the situation with the locals is a bit tense. I apologize."
"Nah, it's okay, Dad. Thanks for taking care of all of us," Morgan said, jumping out of his arms. "Besides, I think I prefer a nice chat among girls like this from time to time."
"Oh? Can I know what you were talking about?"
"NOPE!" Morgan made a shushing gesture with her finger on her lips. "It's a se-cret, I said it was a girls' night, right? It will be a surprise for the future!" she said, taking his hand. "Come on, I heard your stomach growling. You didn't have dinner, did you!?" Robin laughed nervously. "Dad, you have to set a good example for me! What if I pick up that habit?!"
"Okay, okay, let's go," he said as Morgan pulled him along. "Did you see the menu?"
"Yup! You'll love it, although you shouldn't eat something too greasy; lately, I've seen you eating too much bear meat," she said, pouting. "And no, eels for you either." They both walked away, leaving the group behind.
"Wow, it seems she's..." Sumia tried to say something, but several girls sighed simultaneously. "...quite lively."
"Look, Sumia, it's just too much," Lissa said, annoyed. "Robin is a great guy. When we found Morgan, I thought, 'Oh shot, does this mean he's destined with someone?' and I tried to support him since he never told us if he remembered his family. But to think that little Morgan would put us in this situation..."
"It's true she can be carefree, but this curveball caught us off guard," Cordelia added. "Robin is a great man, very loving and kind with Morgan, so... sometimes I feel like we're intruding."
"So..." Sully continued, equally uncomfortable. "...I didn't join the group to find a husband, but damn, this bastard is making it damn hard."
"He's very kind, and unlike others... meeting his future daughter hasn't done anything but increase his determination," Olivia commented.
"Not to mention he's taking better care of himself," Panne added. "Chrom asked me to make sure he didn't stay up late and ate properly, and now that Morgan's here, it seems he's being more responsible with his body."
"Ugh... don't even talk to me about that," Lissa said. "It's pretty hard to concentrate when he's practicing in the mornings..."
"And in combat training," Cordelia laughed. "Indeed, among the Pegasus Knights, I've heard several wondering why he's still single."
They looked at each other and laughed.
"Tharja," Lissa raised her hand.
"Yeah, the one and only!" Cordelia laughed. "In fact, Sully, I'm surprised you said that. Telling Morgan you'd be happy to be her mother... Naga help you if Tharja ever finds out."
"Hah! I'll never take that back," she said while taking a sip from her tankard. "...I just felt it was the right thing to do."
"And why is that?"
"I just felt natural," she shrugged. "My old man ran away when my mother had me, she married another noble. But if there's something that ruins a kid's self-esteem, it's thinking one of their parents doesn't want them."
"Ah... I'm sorry... I brought up a sensitive topic..."
"Don't worry, I've gotten over it," she said while continuing to drink. "Besides pops raised me, so all's well that ends well."
"So..." Lissa tried to point out the elephant in the room.
"...I wouldn't mind being her mother, honestly," Sully said.
"Well, we've gone over this topic quite a few times, so I assume I speak for all of us when I say we'll do what's best for the group and for Morgan, right?" Maribelle said.
"Wait, are you suggesting what I think you're suggesting?" blushed Lissa.
"I see no other way to proceed," Maribelle said, fanning herself to calm her blush. "I think if I were to step back now, it would be a disgrace to my position. I certainly can't imagine being Robin's wife, but as Sully said, I don't think there's a more capable man I know of to achieve the impossible."
"So what, are we forming some kind of group for this?" Cordelia asked.
"The Matchmakers of Robin!" Lissa laughed. "I don't think he'll see it coming."
"Oh dear, I don't want anyone to get hurt or hurt anyone else's feelings," Sumia said, looking at Lissa. "And I don't want this to affect our friendship... so, please, get along, okay?"
"Aye aye," Sully said with a smile.
"Oh, Naga, what have we just done? What did I get myself into?" Sumia thought. "I never thought I'd be involved in this kind of group or conversation. What will I tell Lucina?"
