Jake had left about an hour after they started talking. Of course he had eaten her toast before he set off to wherever he was going to run off to next. After sitting outside for a couple more minutes she had headed back inside, having had her fill of fresh air and chilly weather. Besides, she had to make herself some more toast.
Around noon she gets a knock at the front door. Upon opening the door, Carlisle and Jasper were standing before her, Carlisle with a medical bag in hand. They both had what seemed to be friendly expressions on their faces.
Carlisle gives her a warm smile, and Jasper sends a friendly polite smile her way. Carlisle gestures to his bag. "I'm here to check on your wound, as well as to see how you're holding up." She feels a little nervous at the prospect, but stands aside to let the pair into the house. "Come on in."
They walk into the house, Lillie could not help but notice how graceful they walked. It caused a shiver to run up her spine, it seemed too graceful, almost unnatural. They all make their way to the kitchen. She slides her way onto the bench at the island counter.
Carlisle changes her bandage, it passed by so quickly she felt as if not even two minutes had passed. She could imagine why all the doctors at the hospital liked him so much. He probably impressed them with how good he is at his job. Standing in front of her after disposing of the old bandages he clasps his hands in front of him. "Well it is healing well, I see you are doing a wonderful job at keeping it clean. Unfortunately, I believe it will probably leave a scar, our venom tends to have a rather harsh effect on the body even in such minuscule amounts like you have experienced." He grabbed some medicine, it seemed like some antibiotics from what she could see. "I would like you to take one of these a day until the bottle is done, then you should be all good to go."
After taking the bottle from him she glanced at Jasper and could see his sleeves had rolled up a little bit and scars could be seen. He noticed her staring and pulled the sleeves the rest of the way up. "I got them a while ago, back before I was with the Cullens. I had been in quite a fair amount of fights with other vampires and walked away with these souvenirs." Lillie touched her head wound lightly.
Jasper spoke with a tone with what she could surmise to be empathy "There is no shame in our scars, it shows just how much of a survivor we both are." She wanted to agree with him but she remembered how she had to be saved by Carlisle and Esme, she was more of a damsel in distress than a survivor.
Jasper shakes his head "Getting help from others does not make you any less of a survivor Lillie, everyone needs help every now and then, there is no shame in that. Try not to second guess yourself."
Lillie gasps in shock "How did you know I was doing that?" Then she face palms and remembers that he does not read minds but rather that he can read other people's emotions and influences them. She smiles at him sheepishly "Don't answer that, I remember now."
Carlisle places a hand on her shoulder, she knows it is meant as a sign of kindness, so she tries to hold back the flinch when she feels the cold weight of it. He begins speaking and she focuses on his words to distract herself "I have to agree with Jasper, Lillie. I have been alive long enough to tell who is a survivor and who would rather just give up and accept their fate, and you I can assure you are a survivor."
Lillie smiles at him "I really appreciate that Carlisle, thank you." Looking down at her lap she fumbles with her hands before looking back up at him. "Would you mind if I ask you some questions? They're a bit more personal." She had a few things she was a bit curious about.
Carlisle gives her a warm smile "Go ahead, I would be happy to answer anything you want to ask?" She had to give him some respect in the fact that he seemed like such an open book.
Sitting up straight and squaring her shoulders she clears her throat "What is your favorite thing about being a vampire? I imagine never aging is a huge perk."
Carlisle laughs "It may be a different opinion compared to others, but I would like to think it is that people are capable of such change. It is remarkable how people can change over time. Even us vampires are capable of change, although that change does seem to take a little bit longer for us."
Lillie was a bit surprised in a good way that is. Almost all the vampire books and media stuff she had seen had always been where the vampire complains about having to watch everything change and they being stuck as the same. She supposes that it really must be a matter of perspective, Carlisle did seem different from his family, more calm and accepting of things. Maybe that was why she was not as uncomfortable around him as she thought that she would be.
She asks "Do you think you have changed over the years?"
He takes a moment to think over his reply and he speaks with his soft smile "I would like to think I have but it is a bit hard to put those changes on a timeline. I used to focus a lot on just amassing knowledge, now I think I am more focused on my family and those around me."
She nods, accepting his answer "Is there anything from the past that's not around that you miss?"
He laughs "It may sound a bit cliche but I would have to say the food is what I miss the most. The local baker where I was born made the most delicious fresh rolls, I wish I was still able to enjoy them like I had." She could only imagine, to not be able to enjoy food anymore sounded like a terrible thing to her.
"You must have experienced so much, you could probably write history books that would beat out all the ones they have in the schools." She remembered her history classes and how much they had bored her with what seemed like meaningless facts. She could only imagine how much better the class would have been if Carlisle had been the one teaching it.
He laughs "You might have a point but I will admit during most of the times written about I was in libraries learning all I could of medicine, so I doubt I would be of much use in the historical aspect."
She laughs with him "Yeah I can see how that might go" Lillie turns to Jasper "Would it be alright if I asked you some questions too, It would be nice to know more about you as a person rather than what you can do as a vampire."
Jasper nods his head and smiles at her in a polite manner "No problem ma'am, ask away."
She sends him a grateful smile. "Well alright then, I can detect a hint of a southern accent, are you from the south?" She liked the way he spoke, it made him seem more…human funny enough.
He nods his head. "Yes ma'am I was born and raised in Texas. Spent the early years of my vampire life there as well, the accent can be a little bit hard to hide sometimes, but I think I do well enough." He sends her a playful wink that does wonders to ease her tension.
She smiles in a friendly way "I think your accent adds to your charm." She looks around seeing pictures of her family on the walls "Did you have family there before you were a vampire?"
He looks down and from what she could see he looked to be in pain. "I did yes, I had my momma, and my siblings, a little sister and little brother." She could tell that the topic of his human family was hard for him to talk about so she didn't want to push him any further than she already had.
She felt a calm feeling in the room and Jasper had a look of kindness. Lillie could guess that he felt the emotions she had felt for him, she knew what it was like to lose family and her heart went out to him. "Thank you for telling me." He nodded her way.
Carlisle's phone beeped and upon glancing at the screen he clears his throat. "Well looks like I'm being called away. The family is heading up north for a while for a visit but if you should need anything I will be only a call away, feel free to call anytime. If anything changes with the bite I would like for you to call me immediately without hesitation." He slides his phone into one of his pockets and picks up his medical bag.
She walks both him and Jasper to the door. "Thanks for checking on me, I appreciate it. I will make sure to call you if something happens." The pair is saying their goodbyes when she realizes there were no cars in the driveway or in the street in front of her house. She found it hard to believe that they had walked all the way to her house, maybe they had gotten a ride or something.
She turned to them to ask only to see they were not there, all that was left behind was a breeze. Then she realizes, vampires were fast, like really fast. It was another reminder that they were not human and she could not help but feel like her life was not normal at all anymore.
Shaking her head at the oddity of it all. Pulling her phone out after locking up the door she texts Jake to give him shit for not preparing her for the speed the vampires had. She could only imagine what other surprises were in store for her.
She spent the rest of the day just lounging around. It felt nice to relax and not have to worry about work or anything. When it was time for dinner she ate some of the leftovers in her aunt and uncle's kitchen, not wanting for them to go bad and go to waste.
While eating she realizes that Jake had finally gotten around to texting her back. Of course it was him just poking fun at her for being shocked. He added onto it that the wolves were even faster and she could not help but roll her eyes at him. She believed him of course but she knew Jake and he liked to show off a bit when it comes to stuff that he can do.
Replying back to him making fun of him, saying he may be fast but he's still a dumb ass. After cleaning up after herself, she decides to go to bed for the day. It may not have seemed physically exhausting to others but mentally the day had been enough for her body to beg for her bed.
It felt like only a couple minutes had passed before her alarm goes off, with a groan she sits up and turned it off. Seeing the time she noticed that it had been more than a few hours of sleep, she just didn't have any dreams, so it made it seem not as long. Remembering that the reason she turned on the alarm was because she was going back to work that day.
She slugs her way off of her bed to get ready for work, the days she took off upset her sleep routine, so she felt a little sluggish. Lillie decides to skip doing her hair and instead just puts it up in a semi-presentable bun. At least it will look like she tried just a little bit.
The drive to work itself was rather uneventful, and she zoned out quite a bit during it, just listening to music and enjoying the drive. Pulling into the parking lot she notices that Charlie's cruiser isn't in the lot yet. She was surprised by that. Usually Charlie is one of the first few people in the station. Brushing aside her surprise she makes her way inside, her tote bag swinging on her shoulder.
About 5 minutes later she has her desk setup for the day and Charlie walks in. Speaking loudly so everyone can hear him he explains that he was late because he had to drop Renesmee back off at home for the Cullens Vacation. Lillie remembers Carlisle saying that they were going up to Denali for a little bit and she connects the dots. He sees her and stops in front of her desk "How are you feeling Lillie?" He had a bit of an edge of concern on his voice and it warmed Lillie's heart.
"I am feeling a lot better Charlie, thanks for asking, I'm ready to get back into work." She smiles and gestures to the stack of files and papers that had accrued on her desk while she was gone. Lillie was kind of looking forward to get into it, it was a normal mind-numbing task she was used to.
He smiles back at her "Well we are happy to have you back. Just take it easy for a while alright, you still look a little pale." She nods her head and makes a mock salute in agreement, a small giggle escaping at the salute.
Fast forward to lunch time, Lillie was looking forward to the salad and juice she had packed in her bag this morning. It had been a bit harder than she thought to make her way through the paperwork, she wasn't even at the halfway mark yet. A lot of it was easy to do, just really time consuming. Most of the paperwork needed to be entered into the computer system and then filed away in the correct spots, which was why it was taking so much time. She had to keep making her way back and forth from her desk to the file cabinets.
The doorbell rings and she looks up from her desk to greet the person coming in. The smile that was forming on her face froze before it could finish. In walked Sam Uley, all serious and business. Lillie was shocked to see him walk in, she was even more shocked when he looked her way while walking by and nodded his head at her in a greeting.
Lillie could not help but be very aware of him as he walked to the back towards Charlie's desk. It was her first time being around one of the wolves other than Jacob and although she knew Sam wouldn't hurt her, she still could not help but start to panic a little. Her heart started to beat faster at the same time her palms started to sweat. Trying to calm down she leans back in her chair and looks up at the ceiling. Taking deep breaths and counting in her head, she started to calm down quite a bit. Looking at her computer screen she sees that only a couple of minutes had passed during her little panic attack.
Sams walks back into her eye view, heading back out of the department, but not before nodding at her again except this time in farewell. She could see pity in his eyes and Lillie knew she probably looked like a mess. When Sam leaves she sits back up in her chair and fixes herself up, trying to look like nothing weird had happened. Lillie could not help but feel a little embarrassed at the fact that he knew she had a panic attack because of his presence alone.
Charlie walks up to Lillie's desk right as she finishes fixing her hair and she smiles up at him in greeting. He smiles back at her "I gotta head out for a bit, looks like some hikers camp got messed up by a bear, gotta check it out with some of the rangers, you know how it goes." She nods her head at him, this was not exactly a rare occurrence in their area.
He waves bye and Charlie and a couple of other deputies walk out of the precinct. Lillie doubted that they needed to be there, Charlie could probably handle it himself. She didn't blame them though they were probably bored just sitting around and doing paperwork. Looking back to her stack of papers she could not help but wish she could tag along with the group as well. Sighing she takes another folder and plops it open on her desk. "Sooo much fun."
