Park
Afternoon
"I am trying to help, Mr. Fitz," Enoch said as he led Fitz, The Doctor, River and Jack through the park, Fitz wearing a baseball cap. "You did not need to threaten me."
"Sorry," Fitz said awkward, shame welling up within him. "I'm just…worried about my friends."
The Doctor glanced at Fitz subtly, sure it wasn't just that. And judging by the look River shot him, he wasn't the only one thinking that. But now wasn't the time to say anything.
Enoch led them over to a park bench. A woman was sitting on it, watching a little girl draw on paper with crayons and markers.
"There," Enoch said simply.
At the sound of Enoch's voice, the woman turned around and Fitz nearly started as she smiled.
"Hi Enoch."
"Hello, Polly," Enoch greeted.
"I know you," Fitz said in shock as he walked around the other side of the bench. "You're Polly Hinton."
"Do I know you?" Polly asked, eying Fitz warily.
"I'm with SHIELD. Can I…" Fitz gestured to the girl.
At Polly's nod, Fitz approached the girl, kneeling down a few feet away. Seeing the wooden robin next to her drawing, Fitz picked it up, examining it before looking back at the girl.
"You must be Robin. I'm Fitz," Fitz introduced himself but Robin didn't respond. "I'm friends with Daisy."
Robin paused briefly in her drawing before continuing to draw but otherwise had no reaction as The Doctor, River and Jack all watched curiously.
"She's the seer," Jack realized.
"It would appear so," The Doctor noted as he walked over, kneeling down on Robin's other side. "You have amazing talent. May I take a look, Robin?"
Robin didn't respond but The Doctor picked up a picture anyway, frowning as he saw it was a picture of the earth, except it had a giant crack in it.
"I suppose that's the prophecy you were talking about?" River asked and Enoch nodded.
"She's been very active lately," Polly said, handing some pictures to Enoch.
"What is that?" Fitz asked as he got up, looking as he saw the same symbols that were posted on Enoch's walls.
"An ancient language from another galaxy, not known to anyone on earth. Until her," Enoch explained.
"She doesn't just see the future, she sees another language," River realized, fascinated.
"They're here for us," Robin suddenly said, pointing behind them.
They whirled around, seeing Lucas and Adams, along with soldiers with guns, approaching.
"Up you go, time to leave!" The Doctor said, grabbing Polly and forcing her to her feet.
"Put these in," Enoch said, handing a set of earbuds to each of them.
They put them in, Fitz putting a pair in Robin's ears as the soldiers reached the group.
"You're coming with us, the girl too, so don't even about trying to…run away," Evens blinked as, from their perspective, the group seemed to vanish.
"We just lost half an hour of time," Lucas said as he checked his watch.
That night, as Polly and Robin slept, Enoch drove the RV Jack had picked up The Doctor, River and Fitz in.
"We need to find a place to lay low for a while, at least long enough to figure out our next move," Jack said and The Doctor nodded.
"I am taking you to the place where I took the others," Enoch said and they looked at him startled.
"You said that was impossible," Fitz protested and Enoch handed him a post card.
"I'm taking you where, not when," Enoch said as Fitz saw the post card was of a lighthouse with the words 'Welcome to Lake Ontario.
Lake Ontario, next day
Morning
The next day, they were all in an elevator, going down into a place that was below the lighthouse.
"Under the lighthouse. Reminds me of Torchwood," Jack mused.
"How far down does it go? River asked curiously.
"Unknown," Enoch answered and they looked at him oddly.
"What is it?" Fitz asked.
"Unknown," Enoch repeated and the group looked at each other bewildered.
"Who built it?" The Doctor asked.
"Unknown," Enoch said as the elevator doors opened.
They all got off, Jack, Fitz and The Doctor picking up crates off equipment and taking them in.
"Reminds me of the Playground," Fitz noted as he looked around.
"As of right now, you are the only humans that know of this place's existence," Enoch explained.
"How do you know about it?" Fitz asked.
In answer, Enoch looked towards Robin, who had opened a file folder given to her by her mother.
"We'll stay until we can decide what to do with her. She is no longer safe," Enoch explained.
"How about we just ask her?" Jack suggested.
"She gives answers in her own time. It's best not to interfere," Enoch said.
"You sent my friends into the future, I'd call that some serious interference," Fitz said angrily.
"The Chronicoms are allowed one exception to their rule: the prevention of an extinction level event," The Doctor explained, to Fitz's shock.
"And if that drawing is anything to go by, I think we have one well on our way," Jack said darkly.
"You are right, Jack Harkness," Enoch said before walking off.
Later, Fitz was sitting alone, looking at pictures of Jemma on his phone when The Doctor walked over, sitting down next to him.
"Are you all right?" The Doctor asked.
"Not really, no," Fitz said as he pocketed his phone. "Sorry about…back at the house."
"Was that about the Framework?" The Doctor asked and took Fitz's silence as an answer. "You can't let guilt cloud your judgement, Leopold. I did that and I made so many mistakes. I alienated friends, I allowed a madman to take power, so many people died. Whatever you think you did, I can promise you it pales in comparison to what I've done. The worst thing you've ever done, it still makes you a better man than I."
"I highly doubt that," Fitz scoffed and The Doctor was silent for a moment, wrestling with himself before finally speaking.
"There was a war," The Doctor said and Fitz looked at him confused. "The war between my people and the Daleks. They called it the Time War. Those were dark days. Destruction unlike anything you've seen, death that is…uncountable. Every time I close my eyes…I hear more screams that anyone could ever be able to count. For a long time, I tried to stop it, tried to defeat the Daleks once and for all, end this war. Then, I realized something."
"What?" Fitz asked when The Doctor paused.
"The war, it had changed the Time Lords. They were never exactly good people, but the war; it had made them just as terrible as the Daleks, maybe worse. Even if I found some way to defeat the Daleks, I would be unleashing an even greater threat on the universe. I knew there was only one way to stop it, stop them. I killed them," The Doctor said with a look at the stunned Fitz. "I killed them all. Men, women and children. It was the only way to stop them both from terrorizing the universe. So yes Fitz, I have done far worse than you ever could."
"How did you go on? Learn to live with what you did?" Fitz asked after a long moment.
"For a long time, I was angry. Then I inflicted my will on others, decided I had the right to play God," The Doctor grimly, thinking of deposing Harriett Jones with a grimace. "I made many mistakes son, things I wish I could take back. In the end, I realized the truth: we all have to do terrible things sometimes, but that doesn't have to make us terrible people. Try to be better, but be prepared to do bad for the right reasons."
A little away, River watched as The Doctor and Fitz talked before Jack walked up beside her.
"He's his father's son, judging by that little display back at the house," Jack noted and River nodded.
"Yes. Hopefully, The Doctor will be able to help Leopold," River said.
"He tends to be good at that," Jack noted and River smiled before glancing over at Polly and Robin, frowning.
"You've been watching over Leopold all these years. What do you know about them?" River asked and Jack followed her gaze.
"Not a whole lot. The girl's father was an Inhuman. He could see the future every time he touched someone; they'd both experience a vision of future events. There was an incident over a year ago with SHIELD, he died. Seems like Robin's a chip off the old block," Jack noted.
River nodded, looking at Robin curiously as the girl continued to draw.
Not long after, The Doctor was making some eggs with some skillets he had found as Fitz watched.
"You time travel, you go to other planets and you cook? Is there anything you can't do?" Fitz asked incredulously.
"Date me, apparently," Jack joked and Fitz shot him an odd look.
"Ignore him, Leopold," River said as she walked over, kissing The Doctor on the cheek. "Good talk, you two?"
"It was…enlightening," Fitz said and she nodded.
"Are you feeling better?" River asked, her eyes softening and Fitz sighed.
"Not really. I just wish I knew why I wasn't sent through with my friends," Fitz admitted.
"Well, we know who has the answer to that," Jack said with a glance at Robin. "Why don't you ask her?"
Fits mused on Jack's words for a moment before putting some eggs and toast on two plates and walking over to Polly and Robin.
"Get it while it's hot," Fitz said, holding out the plates for Polly.
"Thank you, it smells good," Polly said politely as she took the plates. "I'm sorry about your friends."
"Did Robin ever say why I wasn't supposed to go with them?" Fitz inquired.
"She doesn't say much at all. Not since Terrigenesis," Polly said with a look at her daughter. "I found her in a state just like her father."
"She's way too young to go through that," Fitz said with compassion as he knelt down in front of Robin.
"Her mind has been scattered. Past, present, future, it's all the same to her, all mixed up. Sometimes, she doesn't even know I'm her mother," Polly said and Fitz could see how bothered she was by this.
"I'm sorry."
"Enoch has been very helpful. He's helped me to understand…and accept. She lives mostly inside her head now, but…we can try," Polly said before crawling over to Robin with the plate of food. "Robin, sweetie?"
Robin gave no indication she had heard Polly, merely continuing to draw.
"Mr. Fitz has brought you some breakfast. And he has a question for you. He'd like to know why he's not with his friends. Can you tell Fitz? He'd really like to know why he's not with them."
For a moment, Robin merely continued drawing before looking up at Fitz.
"Because you have to save them," Robin said before handing Fitz a drawing.
Fitz took it, looking down at the picture. While he didn't understood most of the picture, the figure lying down with two xs over their eyes did not inspire much confidence.
"So my friends are trapped, some seventy years in the future and there's nothing I can do? You have a time machine," Fitz snapped at The Doctor after explaining the predicament.
"And I can get you there easily, but your friends could be anywhere, on any planet. It could take us months to locate them," The Doctor pointed out.
"There might be another way," they turned to see Enoch walk over.
"Thought you didn't interfere," Fit said with some bitterness.
"It's prophecy now," Enoch said before pulling out a small device and handing it to The Doctor.
"What is this?" The Doctor asked as he examined it.
"Think of it as a homing beacon. You plug this into the TARDIS, it will take you to me, in the year 2091," Enoch explained.
"How will that work if there's an extinction level event heading for Earth?" Jack asked warily.
"I shall summon a Chronicom vessel, which I will then use to orbit a planet safely away from earth until the TARDIS arrives," Enoch explained.
"Yes. Yes, this could work," The Doctor said as he looked down at the homing beacon. "And it's our only chance."
"What about Polly and Robin?" Fitz asked with a look back at the two.
"I'll look after them," Jack volunteered. "We can't let someone with Robin's powers fall into the wrong hands."
"Agreed. Thank you, old friend," The Doctor said gratefully and Jack nodded.
"You never have to say thanks. In the meantime, I'll try to get Hale off your back," Jack said with a look at Fitz, who nodded.
"Thank you."
"Thank me by stopping this extinction level event," Jack said grimly.
TARDIS
Afternoon
After Jack dropped them back off in the park, The Doctor, River and Fitz entered the TARDIS and the Doctor immediately walked over to the console, plugging in the homing beacon.
"You really think this will work?" Fitz asked as he and River walked up to the console.
"If it doesn't, we're going to have to spend months trying to find your friends, like I said," The Doctor said as he put in the course. "Here we go. Geronimo!"
Chronicom vessel, 2091
Enoch watched as the TARDIS materialized a few feet away from him. After a few moments, The Doctor, River and Fitz walked out.
"Good morning, Doctor, Professor Song, Fitz," Enoch greeted them.
"Enoch. It appears the plan worked," The Doctor noted and Enoch nodded.
"Indeed, Doctor. While I waited for the three of you to arrive, I had time to put a plan in motion," Enoch said, walking over and picking up a mask. "We have a few days before we arrive at the Lighthouse. That should give me enough time to prepare Fitz."
"Prepare me for what?" Fitz asked as Enoch handed him the mask.
"For facing off against some of the most ruthless and brutal mobsters, monsters and mercenaries in the galaxy. I hope you have in it you," Enoch said and Fitz looked down at the mask for a moment.
"I have it in me," Fitz said in a tone that caused The Doctor and River to look at him in concern. "Be prepared to do bad for the right reasons, right? Well, I think I can do that."
"Just be careful not to lose yourself. It's a slippery slope, son," The Doctor warned, hoping Fitz knew what he was doing.
The Lighthouse
A few days later
Daisy was led into the room in chains by two Kree, hearing Kasius's speech to his audience as he tried to auction her off. Never had Daisy wanted her powers back so quickly.
"Are there any requests as we begin?" Kasius asked and there was a moment of silence.
"Forget your exhibition."
Every eye in the room turned as a man in a mask walked forward before pointing at Daisy.
"She's the Destroyer of Worlds," the man said before removing his mask and Daisy stared in shock at Fitz. "She should fight to the death."
And we've finally reached the end of 5x05 and can now move into the main plot of the story.
With the TARDIS, Fitz doesn't need to freeze himself for seven decades and can just go right to the future; it was just a matter of finding a way to get him where he needed to be.
Fitz's entrance in 5x04 will never not be awesome.
