When Mycroft Holmes offers John Watson an unnamed sum of money to spy on Sherlock, every part of John weighs in, in the space of a split second. Can be read as prequel sort of to my other fic, A Mad Existence Still Needs Payment. No Pairings.

When John Watson's old army friend turns up at 221b Baker St he is scared for his life. He's being haunted by the ghost of someone he knows is dead. Can the world's only consulting detective and an ex army doctor solve the mystery of the scarlet star?

In which Sherlock tortures his violin, lectures John on the benefits of music history and indeed history in general, and spouts enough information on Messiaen to fill a small essay. ;; No prompt, but still a one-shot. Gen, squint-worthy pre-slash.
