Chapter 3
It's been a moon since the first dream. I think I've gotten used to them by now. All they usually ask is how my training went. And then they say something along the lines of 'Dear, you have a big destiny.' It's starting to get old. I have to make it seem like it's not a big deal, because I assume the other apprentices get them too, and they seem to be handling it well. I already stand out enough, I don't need this too.
I sigh and raise my head. Truestep's admiring my commitment to training sessions, as I've been waking my brothers up too for patrols. Honestly, I just like walking through the forest, and I'd rather be praised to annoy them too.
"Rainear, take Owlpaw and Rabbittail on the dawn patrol. Doeshine, you lead one with Duskpaw and Tinywhisker for sunhigh. Moonlight is lead by me, with Thrushpaw and Lousesong." Snowbreeze paused for a moment, thinking.
"I'll lead a hunting patrol across the south border with ShroomClan." Called a voice behind me. I smile and turn to see my father, Wrenstar, approaching the group.
Snowbreeze nodded her head to her leader. "Take Fallowpaw and Truestep with you. Dismissed."
I run up to my father as cats walk away, Rainear's patrol already leaving the camp. "Where have you been, dad?" I meow, touching noses. "I've been trying to chat with you for ages!"
He chuckled softly, sitting down next to me. I notice a fat shrew at his paws. "I've been busy, Fallowpaw. Leader things, you know." I smile.
"I know.. Hey, should we start our patrol?"
"When did you get so responsible?" He ruffled my head fur with his paw. "Yes, good idea." Wrenstar flicked his tail at Truestep, and then nodded to the camp exit. The three of us walked away from camp, the sun rising behind us.
My paws felt like they were about to drop off. The two bird I carried in my mouth, and the rabbit on my back weighed me down even more while the sun beat down on us. I glare at it. Way to hold a grudge! It was one time, I said the weather was too cold. One. Time.
I spit out the pile of feathers on the Fresh-Kill Pile, flipping down with my rabbit. Duskpaw catches my eye, trotting over to me.
"How was the patrol? I mean, it was better without Owlpaw, right?"
"Yeah, I guess so. The sun was real harsh on my pelt, though." I shake out my fur, taking a bite out of my rabbit.
"Hey, it's better than the sunhigh patrol. The sun was beating down right on our fur!" He complained loudly, munching on the rabbit as well. "And guess what?"
"What?"
"You get to train with Owlpaw today! In fighting! Everyone says he's an amazing fighter, so good luck with that."
I groan.
"Do I have to? Can someone else take my place? I'll even clean the elders of ticks, just get me away from that arrogant mouse-brain!"
"Oh, shush about that. I think you're lucky. He's soo good at fighting, I've seen him myself, you see.."
Duskpaw rambles on and on about how 'great' Owlpaw is. I roll my eyes and sigh exaggeratedly. It's like he's obsessed with the fox-heart!
"Look." I interrupt. "I'm really tired right now, so I'm gonna go take a nap. See you around?" He nods in return, looking slightly disappointed that I had to go. The look vanished when he realizes he's been left with almost a full rabbit to himself.
"See you around, Fallowpaw!"
The dreams begin again. I interrupt before Mousescreech can speak.
"Look, I'm tired. Why do you even give me these dreams over and over again? The other apprentices at least seem to be handling them well enough. I don't want to seem like a weirdo, tormented with headaches every time I wake up. Mind toning it down a bit?" I meow, clearly aggravated. The two StarClan warriors look at each other, concern flashing in their eyes. I dismiss it.
Fawnspark then decides to speak up. "Actually, Fallowpaw.. They don't have these dreams." I stop in the midst of preparing a rant to interrupt them with.
"They don't have them? Oh my StarClan, that's why they're so normal!" I hiss, mainly to myself. Mouse-brained me though they were just taking it 10x better than I was! "I could've been complaining to Tansytuft and Finchpaw this whole time??"
"Well, we don't necessarily want you to do that,-"
"Don't care." I lash my tail angrily. "But why didn't you tell me? That is specifically crucial information for someone to know."
"Well, uh.. You see, here.." Mousescreech stuttered.
"Nope. No excuses. Answer me." I snap back. "I. Need. Answers."
Fawnspark sighs, taking over for Mousescreech. "Look, Fallowpaw. We needed you to keep calm for a while. Listen to me. You need to wake up now, but I promise, I'll tell you in the morning."
"But how-"
I wake up.
Fun.
So, somehow, sometime, Fawnspark is going to pop up out of nowhere, and explain some real weird stuff to me. How? I have no idea. When? Still no clue.
This is gonna be so exiting. I sigh, standing for patrol calls. I shove my brother's bodies with my back paws, waking them up.
"What was that for..?" Duskpaw mutters, looking up to me grouchily.
"Up. Patrol time." I snap, leaving the den. They look at each other, like I'm the strange one. I'm totally not, with my mouse-brained brothers not having mouse-brained dreams with mouse-brained StarClan cats. What's even so special about me anyways? How come I have to deal with being blinded by headaches every time I go to sleep? I hiss to myself, and sit down at the edge of the crowd.
"Rabbittail, take Owlpaw and Rainear on a hunting patrol in the north. Tinywhisker, take Duskpaw and Doeshine to the south. Truestep, Lousesong, Take your apprentices training. Dismissed." I groan slightly as Snowbreeze dismissed us for training. I've pretty much mastered hunting, so now it's time for fighting.
My least favorite part.
End.
