Ch 70: Sports Festival part. 1
"Before we get the sports festival underway, I'd like to make a small announcement!", Present Mic announced over the loudspeakers during the beginning of the Sports Festival. This caused a stir of excitement in the crowds, making everyone start to sit on the edge of their seats with anticipation. "This year's festival has been proudly sponsored and aided by The Neo Icon Phoenix Research Facility! So let's give a big thank you round of applause for its owner!", he announced as the cameras panned over to an outdoor seating spot on one of the tallest parts of the Sports Festival arena. The people began to cheer but quickly died off when nothing was there. After some silent muttering, Present Mic asks, "Where are they?"
Suddenly a roar rang out from the sky and all eyes turned up to see a huge shadow covering the sun! People began to panic as they saw the shadow reveal itself to be a huge dragon with bright red scales and ashy breath! The dragon opened its wings and gingerly landed on top of the stadium which was just big and strong enough to hold it up. Once fully secured on the ledge it gently brought its head down where Izuku and Egon walked off the head of Torch Wick. The two scientists stood and waved their hands at the stunned people as Torch Wick spread his wings and roared in boast!
Finding his voice again, Present Mic exclaimed, "Wow! What an entrance! Let's give them a hand!"
The crowd went wild as the two scientists took their seats with the other important people. Sitting beside them, and riding Torch Wick, Melissa, who has been invited by Izuku, asked the two men cautiously, "Did we have to come in here on dragon's back?"
"Of course we did. If we're gonna make an appearance, then make it a splash! Plus no one's gonna try to mess with us while Torch Wick is breathing down their necks.", Egon assured her as Torch Wick's hard sharp eyes glanced around the whole stadium.
She sighs in exasperation before turning to her friend and saying, "Well, thanks for bringing me along with you two. I'm so excited to see the Sports Festival in real life!"
Izuku smiles at her enthusiasm and says, "I'm glad to hear it. Your dad did tell me you've always wanted to do this, so here we are."
"I think Uncle All Might is gonna head off the Festival this year.", Melissa said excitedly as she turned her head to center field.
The two scientists sweat drop and say I'm unison, "Of course he is.", something that didn't go unnoticed by the girl.
During their talk, Present Mic and Eraserhead both said a bunch of blah blah blah stuff before getting into the nitty gritty where the DJ hero exclaimed, "And here he is. I'm the flesh for the lighting of the Torch, give a hoot and a holler for Japan's number one hero, All Might!"
The huge man flew through the air, over the stadium, and landed in the center while striking a pose as everyone went wild!
Izuku just sighs at this and says, "You know, now that I'm not seeing him through fanboy vision, All Might is a real blowhard."
"Told you so.", Egon teases him while holding out his hand, leading the boy to place a few hundred ten in it.
All Might then went on a tangent regarding nothing, something that Izuku and Egon tuned out, until he finally exclaimed, "WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, I SHALL NOW BEGIN THE GAMES WITH THIS TORCH!", he yelled while pulling an unlit torch from his pocket, raising it in the air, getting a round of cheering until it all died just as fast. All Might sweat dropped at his blunder and offered, "THAT I HAVE TO RELIT. UNLESS SOMEONE ELSE CAN HELP."
Seeing an opportunity, Torch Wick brought his massive head looked towards the giant pyre, and shot a small weak fireball at it. Once it hit it exploded and went up in flames right then and there! But to the surprise and excitement of the crowds.
All Might blinked in surprise at this, shrugged, and proclaimed, "LIGHTING BY DRAGON'S FIRE. EVEN BETTER!", causing a louder round of cheering to go all over the stadium.
A few more announcements were made, Midnight was named umpire for every event going forward, and she made a small speech before finishing up with, "Before we truly begin, a small speech from this year's top student."
Hearing this the two scientists sat straight in their seats before saying in unison, "Oh no. Oh, gods."
Melissa was confused by their reaction to this but saw what they meant when Bakugou Katsuki took the stage and mic. He looked oddly and off-puttingly calm as he stood there with a neutral expression.
"I promise.", he began to say while licking his lips, looking around at everyone before his eyes darted to the VIP booths where he spotted Izuku and Egon trying to inconspicuously hide themselves.
"You don't think he sees me, do you?", Izuku squeaked over to Egon who was hidden in a book.
The blond boy sees his old friend and quickly goes from neutral to ravenous as he yells while pointing up at the green teen, "To be better than you and show you up here and today!"
Everyone was struck silent for a long while at his statement of war and violence until the whole stadium broke out into a booing storm at the teen! But he didn't care one bit as he kept his eyes firmly locked onto the green scientist who refused to meet his gaze.
"Yep, he does.", Egon stated as he peaked past the top of his book with a confused Melissa trying to connect the dots.
"Who is that guy?", she finally inquires, being unable to draw any conclusions from what happened.
"Just some alley trash UA brought in thinking it was gold.", Izuku groaned as he looked away from the angry teen that was being pulled off the stage, still refusing to acknowledge his existence.
After the mini fiasco made by Bakugou, the first two games of the festival have come and gone with Bakugou being the winner of both, but always nearly tied with Todoroki. Once the final game was called and all remaining participants were put into battle teams, Izuku decided to take a break, seeing as Bakugou was the first one to fight. So he went into the stadium and found a drink dispenser to cool off and rehydrate.
He hadn't even gotten a mouthful of the cold beverage before a familiar voice called to him saying, "Hey Izuku."
Izuku nearly choked as he turned around to stare at the girl behind him. Taking a breath he said, "Oh hey, Melissa. Thought you went to get something to eat."
"That was a lie. I just wanted to talk to you in private.", she admitted to him before teetering on a subject and finally asking in a begrudging manner, "You and Egon didn't seem all too thrilled every time Uncle was in the spotlight. Why's that? I kinda assumed everyone who isn't a villain doesn't like him."
Izuku glared at her with a half-lidded gaze as he asked, "Really?"
Realizing her mistake, Melissa corrected herself in a flustered mess, "I said assumed, when I was young, I probably should've added that."
Izuku put aside his critical expression before adopting one of hesitation as he sighed to her, "Well, it's kinda personal, and knowing how much you look up to him, I didn't want to tell you."
"Oh my! Did Uncle do something?", She asked him in a mix of intrigue and caution.
"Well…", Izuku began to see as he rubbed the back of his head.
"Hey. Your Doctor Izuku Midoryia, right?", a new voice interrupted them.
The two looked to the side and standing a few yards down the hallway was a boy in the hero department uniform sporting hair that was half red and white, two different colored eyes that were blue and brown, and a nasty-looking cold burn on the left side of his face.
Thinking about what he just answered carefully, "Uh, yes, and you are?"
"Shoto Todoroki.", the boy introduced himself.
"Wait, like, the son of Endeavor?", Melissa chimed in.
Shoto nods then replies in a cold tone, "Yes. But that's not important. I need to speak to you alone."
Izuku looks off and is nervous about this. When Melissa picked up on his reaction she stepped in front and proclaimed, "Whatever you say, you can say it to the both of us."
Shoto groaned and conceded to her demands while saying, "Fine. I have a question….you see I've had these…thoughts in my head just banging around and I need closure. Back at the lab when the villains attacked, I noticed you."
"Sorry, not into guys.", Izuku shot back in a snappy tone, making Melissa chuckle.
Shoto groaned at this and affirmed, "Not like that. Anyway, despite your… circumstances, you faced the impending challenge ahead with no fear or hesitation. And even if you did have fear, you pushed through it. How? How does someone without power manage to do anything, least of all fight in a life-or-death situation? How do you do it."
Izuku finally realized what he meant and nodded to Melissa, making sure she understood, he walked down to Todoroki, placed a hand on his shoulder, and looked him in the eye with a smile he explained to him, "Todoroki. It doesn't matter if you have power or not, it's about willingness and duty. If you truly put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything, so long as it's marginally realistic."
As Todoroki thinks on this, Melissa chimed in again and theorized, "I feel like there's more to this than what's on the surface."
Izuku realizes what she means and comes to the same conclusion. Looking at the teen across from him he inquired, "Yeah, I mean, you have one of the most powerful quirks in the world right now. Why ask me about this?"
Shoto takes an unsteady breath as he asks back, "Do you know what a quirk marriage is?"
"Yeah.", Izuku replied with a nod.
Tightening his fists he admitted while looking away, "My parents were one of them. Time and time again my father tried to make a child whose only use was to surpass All Might. Time and time again he failed until I came along."
"I knew Endeavor was always trying to one-up All Might, but I never would've expected he'd go that far for it.", Melissa said in surprise with her mouth over her hand.
Shoto grits his teeth as he continues to tell them, "I was trained ruthlessly, and my mother was abused by him until she snapped and gave me this scar. From there on I vowed to never use his power. I'd become a hero without using his flame."
There was silence between the three of them for a long time until Melissa said out of nowhere, "That's stupid.", causing both boys to stare at her. One in disbelief and the other in rage. Realizing her mistake she quickly corrected herself, "What? I was talking about his train of thought, not the reasoning behind it."
Izuku then too came to the same conclusion as she did and explained to Todoroki, "Like Melissa was trying to say, you are thinking about this from the wrong angle. Sure your fire comes from your father. But it's not his fire, it's yours. You're not Hell Fire, you're Half Hot Half Cold. It's your power Todoroki, no one else's."
Shoto stepped away to absorb all this for a long while until he finally took a deep and calming breath. Melissa pats him on the shoulder for his use of words and Izuku smiles back at her.
"There's just one more thing.", Shoto asked as he turned around and inquired in all seriousness, "Are you Professor Egon's secret love child?"
Before they could process what they heard, a large thud was heard and the sight of Egon lying on the floor in an unconscious state graced them all. Leading Izuku to exclaim, "Egon!", as he realizes the man has been eavesdropping the whole time.
"Good thing I brought the defibrillator.", Melissa sighs exasperated as she pulls the device from her bag.
As the girl tended to the man, Shoto inquired, "Is this normal?"
"More than you'd think.", Izuku groaned in reply.
After that, a silence fell upon them until Shoto piped up and told him, "My question still stands."
"Of course, I'm not! That's crazy! He's my employer and mentor. Nothing else.", Izuku exclaimed while waving his arms around.
"But he's dating your mom?", He said back casually.
"Who told you!?", Izuku demanded as he pulled him by his collar and pulled him to his face.
"No one, it's all over the News.", He told him as he pulled out his phone which had an article of Egon and Inko together.
Izuku stares at the phone looking both red with frustration and pale with fear. Trying to calm himself he says, "Even if he is dating my mom, I'm still not his kid. He'd only be my stepdad."
"Holy Christmas tits!", Egon yells as he's brought back to life once again.
"And he's back.", Izuku huffs and he gets ready to tear the man a new one for several things.
