Chapter 2: Annoying Best Friends.
Evan
I walked home after meeting Gabriella with a million different thoughts. "Why did I want to tell her everything about me? Was it those eyes? She was pretty I guess-"
I immediately cut himself off at that thought. "What am I thinking? The real question is how in the hell could she see me?" I thought vigorously.
Now for the honest to god truth. I was a warlock. I was part of a special agency called 'The Gifted'. It was an agency where people like me, who had unique abilities special to themselves, went to fight any supernatural being that caused trouble. I was one of their most important assets. This was ranked by special ability. I could turn invisible. I was always their first choice when it came to stealth missions and was usually chosen to do some fighting as well.
I shook my head to see that I was now standing in front of the 'Cat's Eye Café'. I walked into the café and walked immediately to the bookshelf in the back corner of the café. I pulled the book with the cat's eye on it and the bookshelf opened, revealing a rundown elevator. I stepped into the elevator and stomped 3 times, which made the elevator jolt to life and it started moving down. In 30 seconds the elevator stopped and revealed an extraordinary room with extremely high ceilings. It was a bright white color that reached all the way to the 40 foot tall ceiling. I walked down the giant stairs from the elevator. And into a hallway that has marble coloured walls. I then walked into the first door I found on the left.
"Evan!" a male voice screamed, jumping up, and out of instinct I held out my arms and I caught who screamed my name. "Oh, my beautiful Princess," he swooned.
"Shut the hell up, Luke," I laughed, and then smirked evilly when I had a good idea. I dropped the blonde I was holding in my arms right onto the floor. But I didn't even hear a thud.
"Seriously?" Luke questioned, floating right above the floor.
Luke's special ability was to fly. He was always the number one asset for everything. Sometimes it made me jealous but Luke was one of my bestfriends how could I ever hate Luke? Even though he's the most annoying person in the world.
"Go fuck yourself, Luke," I laughed.
"Language!" Luke scolded.
"Oh god," I heard a voice laugh behind me, "you guys are idiots,"
I turned around to see a guy leaning against the door frame with dark brown hair and bright blue eyes.
"Nick! When did you get back?" I smiled, giving the brunette a bear hug.
Nick was my partner in crime. Nick was my best friend for life. Both of us have our ups and downs and we are always there for eachother. I don't love anyone more than I love Nick.
"Nicky!" Luke exclaimed, floating back to his feet.
"How many times do I have to tell you not to call me that?" he laughed, shoving me hard enough off himself to make me stumble.
"I think it suits you," Luke replied, pushing his blonde hair out of his sky blue eyes.
"I agree. Nicky is a perfect nickname," I agreed. Nick gave us dirty looks and opened his mouth to say something, but he was immediately interrupted.
"Nicholas?!" a female voice echoed through the hallway, as well as the loud footsteps which belonged to high heels.
"Oh no. Hide me!" Nick exclaimed. Nick jumped over the couch and Luke and I formed a wall in front of the couch to hide him.
"Have you guys seen, Nick?" the female who screamed Nick's full name earlier walked into the room.
"No, we haven't, Lauren. I think you should go check somewhere else," I replied.
"Okay, then," she responded, an evil smile dancing across her face. Lauren started to walk away until Nick jumped up from behind the couch.
"You ate my sandwich!" he screamed. "You little bitch!" Nick yelled, throwing his hands up in the air.
"Ah ha! I knew you were in here!" Lauren proclaimed, pointing her finger at Nick.
"Aww shit. How do you always know exactly what to do?!" he whined.
"I don't know," Lauren replied, moving her straight long dark brown hair behind her shoulders. "Maybe you should stay out of other people's minds, and then I wouldn't be able to trick you," she added in a very annoyed tone, meeting her ice cold blue eyes to his matching set.
Nick and Lauren are twin siblings. They claim to hate eachother but everyone knows that if something happened to one of them it would shatter the other one. Everyone knows they love each other, except for maybe themselves? Nick has the power to read minds, and Lauren has the power to sense any type of magic or any supernatural being. Plus they are both insanely good at fighting, with and without magic. They are pretty much the perfect duo for any type of mission.
"Aww, come on," he whined. Lauren just rolled her eyes and then shifted to look directly at me. Her eyebrows furrowed and her face contorted into an extremely worried look.
"Evan, are you feeling okay?" Lauren questioned. Luke and Nick turned to look at me.
"Yeah? I'm feeling great," I replied. "Why? What's wrong?" I questioned.
"It's your magic," she replied. "It's so weak. Like so faint that I can barely feel it," Lauren added. "Can you try and turn invisible, Evan?" she asked.
"Sure?" I replied in a confused tone, starting to get extremely worried. I brought my hand up to my neck, and pushed on the side. This was how I turned invisible. I watched as Lauren's expression changed to seem even more worried than before.
"Oh my god! Where did he go?!" Luke questioned in awe, looking around the room as if he was about to get whiplash.
"So, it worked?" I asked. Nick just shook his head and then hit Luke on the back of the head.
"No, dude. We can all still see you," Luke said, rubbing the back of his head with the palm of his hand. "Ow, that hurt," he mumbled, looking at Nick who was now staring back at me with a concerned look on his face.
"What the hell?" I said quietly, looking down at my body which was completely visible.
"Don't worry. We'll figure this out together," Nick said, and everyone else nodded. Lauren then turned back to face Nick and spoke to him.
"Mom and Dad want a status report from your last mission," Lauren explained. "That's why I came to find you," she added.
Lauren and Nick were the children of the head of this establishment of 'The Gifted'. They were the ones that sent everyone out on missions. We are the best establishment of all of 'The Gifted' establishments, because all of our missions are a success. Always.
"Okay," Nick replied in an emotionless tone, as if he was a robot with absolutely no feelings. Which he was often forced to be around his parents. Nick tensed immediately and I walked over to him and put a hand on his shoulder. Nick flinched and looked over at me.
I squeezed Nick's shoulder and gave him a smile before whispering "good luck,"
Nick smiled weakly and followed his sister out of the room. But before he walked out of the room he turned to look at me again.
"When I get back you have to tell me about that girl you met. Gabriella," he smiled slyly, reading my mind. I just sighed. I knew that Nick was just trying to cover up his fear with humor. He always did.
"Poor Nick," Luke said to me. "Hopefully nothing bad happens," he added.
"I know," I replied, still looking at the doorway that Nick and Lauren had just walked through a second before. "Let's hope that his mission went incredibly well," I said. "I swear to god if it's that bad again-" I spat through gritted teeth. "I'll kill them," I said, fire blazing in my eyes. I shook my head, trying to get myself to stop thinking about the worst outcome.
"Anyway," Luke sang. Obviously that was what he was trying to do too. Luke never liked thinking about anything bad that could happen. He likes to see the good side of things. Most of the time. "Who's Gabriella?" he questioned.
"Fuck off, Luke," I laughed, putting my worry for myself and Nick away for the time being.
"Give me details, Princess!" Luke demanded.
"Fine!" I replied. "She has long blonde hair, and brown eyes,"
"So, she's hot?" he asked.
I just rolled my eyes. "She's an Anthropoid though," I stated. Luke just groaned in annoyance.
An Anthropoid is what the supernatural beings called humans. It was just an easy way for them to identify them that way.
"Damn," he said. "That sucks, man," Luke added.
"We met at the graveyard," I continued, ignoring Luke's comment. But then my biggest worry crossed my mind again. "She could see me," I explained.
"What do you mean?" Luke asked, cocking an eyebrow.
"She could see me when I was invisible. And after I met her my-" I cut myself off.
"Your what?" Luke questioned, very intrigued in the conversation now.
"That's when my powers stopped working," I stated.
"So you think it was something that she did?" Luke questioned.
"Well, there's only one way to find out," I replied. "Do you wanna sneak out of the establishment with me?"
Luke and I waited in our assigned room until it was about one in the morning. But both of us were getting quite worried when Nick didn't come back to the room. We waited a bit longer before we decided that we had to sneak out now or we would never get out. Luke and I opened the door of the room and crept down the hallway. I touched my neck to activate my invisibility but then sighed when I realized that it didn't work anymore. We snuck down the hallway, passing a few guards on the way to the stairwell to the roof. Before we were about to get to the stairwell we were caught by a guard.
"Shit!" Luke whispered loudly.
"Run!" I hissed, and the two of us started to run away from the guard.
"Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit!-" Luke whispered, as the guard started to gain on us.
"Can you stop?!" I spat, looking back at the guard that was chasing us. I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw who was actually chasing us.
"What are you doing?!" Luke hissed, until he noticed who was chasing us as well. "Nicky!" Luke practically yelled, but clapped his hands over his mouth.
"Guys! What are you doing?!" Nick questioned quietly.
"Isn't it obvious?" Luke stated. "We're going to get food from the kitchen. Evan needs his late night lucky charms," Luke added. Nick and I rolled our eyes.
"You do know I can read your mind, right?" Nick questioned. "Luke, seriously you're an idiot," he stated. "I'm sorry guys. But you can't sneak out. I have to tell my parents," Nick explained.
"Please, Nick! I need to know what happened to my powers," I explained in a whisper. Nick tensed and started stuttering. I knew that this was going to be a difficult decision for Nick to make, so I waited patiently for Nick to make a decision.
"Fine. But if my parents find out I-" Nick started.
"They won't find out," I reassured.
"Okay. Okay," Nick repeated slowly. "I won't tell anyone that you guys snuck out," he stated.
"Thank you, Nick," I replied, grabbing Luke's arm and dragging him towards the stairwell.
"Okay, bye, Nicky!" Luke exclaimed a bit too loudly which caused me to hit Luke in the back of the head. Luke and I walked up the massive stairwell. We must've climbed about fifteen flights of stairs until we reached the rooftop of 'Cat's Eye Café'. The two of us were about to jump to the next rooftop when we heard a voice behind us.
"What are you two doing?" a female voice questioned. Luke and I spun around to see that Lauren was standing near the top of the stairwell with her arms crossed in front of her chest. I cringed when I saw that she was wearing a very serious look.
"We are ummm-" Luke started.
"No need to explain. I want to come with you," Lauren replied, skipping up to the two boys. I let out a very long sigh of relief. I seriously thought we were in big trouble.
"You?! Want to come with us?!" Luke practically yelled. "What the hell happened to you?!" Luke gasped.
"Fuck you, Lucas," Lauren groaned. Luke just gave her an annoyed stare when she said his full name. "You're an asshole," she added. He just muttered curses for Lauren under his breath.
The three of us jumped rooftops until Lauren stopped dead in her tracks on top of one of the houses.
"I've never felt this energy before," she stated. "It's incredibly strong and magnetic. It's making you weaker, Evan," Lauren added.
"This must be it then," I replied, feeling my powers slowly fade out of my body. Lauren and I found a tree that was right next to the house and climbed down it. While Luke just flew down to the ground. "What a show off," I muttered under my breath, which made Lauren laugh. The three of us met at the front of the house and stopped in front of the house.
"Okay. Let's get this shit over with," Luke said. I just rolled my eyes and stepped back while Lauren picked the lock. I looked backwards just to make sure the perimeter was clear. But when I spotted something I felt an overwhelming sense of pain.
I spotted a torn down house that had been demolished, and had caution tape surrounding the remains of the house. All of the plants around the house were absolutely dead, crumpled, and a pitch black color.
I felt my breath catch in my lungs, and my breathing started coming out in uneven huffs. My green eyes widened in horror as I looked at the house. I hadn't been here since my parents died. I never wanted to come back here. Flashes of my parents' mangled bodies lying with knives stuck through them, crossed my mind, making it nearly impossible for me to breathe. I was now hyperventilating and I shook my head to try to force the terrifying images out of my brain, but I couldn't. I then felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Evan, are you okay?" a voice echoed through my ears. But to me the voice sounded so far away. All I could see was blood and death. All I could hear was screaming, the last thing my parents ever did.
I crashed to my knees, and wheezed, trying with incredible effort to get my breathing under control. I heard people screaming my name, but it was so far away that I thought I would never see the people that were screaming my name. Then all of a sudden I heard choking behind me, and I heard people fall behind me.
"W-w-what the fuck?" I heard a male voice from behind me choke out. I slapped myself in the face, which gave me a sense of control because I felt the pain in my cheek. And I knew that I was the one who put it there, which made me feel a feeling of relief. My breathing started to even out with these thoughts, and I heard the choking behind me stop. I looked around and could now finally see Lauren and Luke, but they weren't where they were when I zoned out. Lauren and Luke were lying on the ground, hands clasped around their necks.
"What the fuck just happened?" Lauren questioned, breathing heavily.
"I-I don't know," Luke stuttered, trying to regain the air that had just been stolen from him. I just looked at the two of them and then looked at my surroundings. Every single flower in the flower beds was dead, and they were a midnight black color that looked like the flowers had been burnt to a crisp. The grass was now an ugly yellow color even though it had been bright green a second before. Lauren then looked at me and her bright blue eyes widened in fear.
"E-Evan your magic," she stuttered. "It's so powerful. And s-so," Lauren said in horror. "So evil," she muttered. My eyes widened in horror when she said that, and so did Luke's. But then Lauren cocked an eyebrow. "Wait. It's-it's fading," Lauren stuttered, concentrating strongly on my magic. "It's gone," she stated at last. "And now your magic is weak again," Lauren explained in an extremely confused tone.
"What the fuck?" I mumbled, looking at my surroundings again. The three of us stood up and dusted ourselves off and stood in silence for a couple of minutes before I spoke. "We should go home," I stated.
"I agree," Luke replied, and Lauren just nodded. Lauren and I climbed the tree again and Luke flew to the top of the house. The three of us jumped roofs until we reached 'Cat's Eye Café'. We ran down the stairwell and then split ways with Lauren because she had a different assigned room then Luke and I did. Luke and I ran to our assigned room and shut the door quickly.
I crashed into my bed immediately and tried to fall asleep, but I couldn't. I heard Luke start to snore, and I wished that I could fall asleep too. But my mind was racing with what had just happened. What the hell was happening to me? Now I was exactly excited for the stupid Anthropoid school I had to go to for my intel mission. I needed answers, and I knew exactly where to find them. Gabriella Stone, at ForestVille High School.
