Chapter 3: Why Do Boys Always Fight?
Gabriella
I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock. I groaned and rolled over to turn the alarm off. I sat up in my bed and jumped up off my bed. I was a morning person so it was extremely easy for me to get up in the morning. I stretched out and then got up to get ready for school. I changed into a white tank top, light blue baggy ripped jeans, and a gray sweater to cover up my arms. I brushed my long blonde hair, which fell in waves over my shoulders, and then I gazed in the mirror at my dark brown eyes. I shrugged and then did my makeup. After I was done I came out of my room and walked downstairs. When I walked downstairs I went into the kitchen and saw my father sipping a cup of coffee.
"Hey, kiddo," he greeted.
"Hey, Dad," I replied. "Goodmorning," I added.
"How was your sleep?" My dad questioned.
"It was great," I lied, "did anything interesting happen at work last night?" I asked, trying to move on from the topic of sleep.
I kept having nightmares about the house across the street and the boy who survived the attack. Evan Richardson. The guy that I met at the cemetery.
"It was crazy. We got a guy that was shot in the head, and we had to operate right away," he explained. My dad was a doctor. "He died," he added sadly.
"Oh god," I sighed. "Well I got to go pick up Lewis and Kris. See you after work," I stated, starting to walk towards the garage.
"Okay bye, sweetheart!" My dad yelled from the kitchen. "Love you!" He exclaimed.
"Bye! Love you, Dad!" I yelled back, grabbing my backpack and going into the garage. I started my truck and pulled out of the garage and onto the driveway. I was about to pull out into the road but I stopped the car immediately when I saw that my lawn was an ugly yellow color. I got out of my truck quickly. I ran to the front lawn and ran my fingers through the dead lawn.
"What the fuck? This was not like this yesterday." I thought. I then looked at the flower bed and saw that all the flowers were completely black. "What the hell?" I thought. I then shook my head. I was probably imagining things. I walked back to my truck and started it again. After making a mental note to check the lawn after school, I then drove straight to Lewis's house.
Like always Lewis was waiting outside for me. He had his backpack slung over his shoulder, and was wearing a dark green sweater and dark blue jeans. And he was holding an enormous cup of coffee in one of his hands. He skipped up to my truck and jumped into the front seat.
"Are you excited for school today?" Lewis smiled.
"No. Not at all," I replied, starting to drive to Kris's house. "Should I be?"
"We have a Chemistry test!" Lewis exclaimed.
"And how in the hell is that exciting?" I questioned.
"It's not!" Lewis responded through gritted teeth. I turned to look at him and I raised an eyebrow out of confusion. "But I'm trying to see the best side!" he smiled extremely fakely. I just sighed and turned my attention back to the road.
"Good luck living in your fantasy world while the rest of us face the facts and struggle," I shrugged. Lewis just let out a stressed sigh and rubbed right above his glasses with the palms of his hands.
"I just can't fail this," Lewis stated, "or my Mom's going to kill me. So, I studied all night," he added. I turned to look at Lewis and saw just how exhausted he looked. He had bags under his eyes, and his eyes were completely bloodshot.
"You're going to do great, Lewis," I reassured.
"Hopefully," Lewis replied.
I stopped at Kris's house and honked the car horn. Kris walked out of the house with a mess in her hands. In one hand she was holding her backpack, and in the other she was holding a pair of shoes. She had a piece of toast in her mouth and was running down her driveway in just socks. I sighed embarrassedly, and Lewis just laughed.
"She's so disorganized, that it's funny," Lewis laughed. Kris threw open the door of the back of the truck and practically fell into the backseat.
"What's up guys?" she mumbled against the toast in her mouth. Kris closed the door and I set off to school. Kris put her backpack in the backseat with her and put on her shoes. She then finished eating her toast. "So how's life?" Kris questioned once she was done with her toast.
"You're an fucking idiot," Lewis laughed. Kris fake laughed and rolled her eyes. She then smiled evilly and then brought her knees to her chest and kicked the back of Lewis's seat. Hard. And Kris and I laughed so hard when Lewis winced in pain.
I then pulled up to the school and we all hopped out of the truck. We grabbed our backpacks and set off to class.
Kris skipped down the hall with Lewis's wrist in her hand, and Lewis had to run to keep up with her. Kris waved goodbye to Lewis and I when she reached her Math class.
Lewis and I then walked to Chemistry together and took our seats in the front together. The teacher started class and handed out our test papers. I looked at the paper and immediately forgot everything I had learned. I guessed on the first couple of questions until everything started coming back to me. I did the rest of the test easily and then went back to the first page and fixed the questions I got wrong. I then walked to the front of the classroom and gave my teacher my finished exam. I then went back to my seat and pulled out my phone and scrolled through Instagram. I caught a glance at Lewis and saw that his hands were shaking while he was holding his pencil, and biting his lip. I put my hand on his shoulder and gave him a reassuring smile. Lewis smiled back weakly and then turned back to his exam. Within 20 minutes the class was over and Lewis handed his exam in just in time. Lewis and I walked down the hallway and Lewis nervously sighed a lot.
"You did great, Lewis," I smiled.
"Yeah hopefully," he mumbled.
We then walked all the way to the gym which was all the way on the other side of the school. The two of us walked into the gym and were met by a screaming Kris. She threw her arms around Lewis and I and we all walked to the corner that we hibernated in. Lewis and I weren't very athletic, while Kris was but she liked hanging out with her friends more.
We talked for a couple of minutes until I heard a boy near me laugh and say. "Maybe if you weren't a freak your parents wouldn't have died in a freak accident,"
I whipped my head around to see who had said that. It was a dirty blonde guy who had really dark brown eyes, that looked black from where I was standing. He was wearing one of the most evilly smirks I had ever seen. I looked closer at the guy and then realized it was none other than my boyfriend. Dean. I couldn't believe Dean would say something like that. I was in a complete daze, I just couldn't believe it. Dean was with his friends and it scared me when they all laughed because they thought that what he said was funny.
And then I looked at the other boy and my eyes widened in shock. It was Evan. There were also two people standing behind Evan. A tall boy with dark brown hair and bright blue eyes who looked so angry that it scared me. The other boy that was standing behind Evan had blonde hair and dark blue eyes and he looked almost just as angry. I was about to say something to Dean but then someone interrupted me.
"You mother fucker!" I heard the dark brown haired guy behind Evan yell. I watched the brunette grit his teeth and he saw Evan grab his wrist.
"It's okay, Nick. Calm down," Evan said to the brunette. I watched as the brunette who I now knew as Nick, hesitantly backed down.
"I'm just telling the truth. His parents are dead, what do you want me to say?" he laughed, and his friends laughed too. My eyes widened. I was frozen. I couldn't say anything or move. I could not believe that he would say that, I loved Dean and I thought he was a really good person. But apparently I was wrong.
"You little bitch," Nick spat, just loud enough for Dean to hear.
"Excuse me?" Dean replied angrily. I watched in slow motion as Dean pulled back his hand and then brought it forward in a fist.
I heard a sickening crunch when it made contact with Nick's face. Nick looked back at Dean with tears in his eyes, and muttered something that I couldn't hear.
Evan's eyes widened in horror when Dean punched Nick in the face. Evan looked so angry he was slowly turning red. But he then noticed the look on Nick's face which caused Evan's expression to soften. Evan put his hand on Nick's shoulder, but Nick flinched so hard that I had no idea how he didn't hurt himself by doing it.
When Nick jumped it caused Evan's expression to turn angry again. Evan was absolutely furious.
"You absolute piece of shit!" Evan yelled. "You can mess with me but you can not fucking hurt my friends! Ever!" Evan screamed through gritted teeth, turning to Dean and punching him in the face. Hard. So hard that Dean staggered backwards.
Dean put his hand on his face and looked back at Evan. He swung at Evan but Evan blocked the punch and then kicked Dean in the stomach. Dean stumbled back again, and that's when Dean's friends joined the action.
I watched as the blonde haired guy next to Evan smiled evilly, he was obviously hoping there was going to be a fight. Nick was slowly backing away from the fight with wide eyes, and moving very rigidly. One of Dean's friends swung at Nick but the blonde blocked and punched Dean's friend in the face.
"Thanks, Luke," Nick managed to say, just loud enough for me to hear. The blonde who I now knew as Luke smiled sympathetically. I was now facing the fight but couldn't move from where I was. I was frozen. I watched in horror as Luke took on both of Dean's friends. He punched one of them in the face knocking them out cold. And then kicked the other one in the stomach, making them retreat. Luke smiled triumphantly. I could tell that fighting thrilled him. Then I looked back over at Evan.
I saw Dean swing at Evan again and this time landed a hit on Evan. Evan doubled over and gasped in pain before countering. Evan shot Dean with an elbow right to the jaw. I cringed when I heard a giant crack echo through the gym. This caused Dean to fall over and groan in pain as he clutched his jaw. Evan got on top of Dean and punched him in the face. He kept punching him over and over again. And this is when I unfroze. There was blood all over the floor of the gym. It was coming out of Dean's mouth and noise. I saw everyone around me fall to their knees as if they were suffocating. But, all I could care about was Evan.
I ran forward, and screamed. "Stop! Stop it! Evan, stop it!"
Evan whipped his head to face me. He looked at me straight in the eyes, and I noticed the tears pooling in the bottom of his eyes. But, his eyes didn't look normal. They were completely pitch black, there was zero color or white in his eyes.
"What the fuck?" I thought, blinking rapidly, because I knew what I was witnessing was not real. Evan turned back to Dean and started punching him again. Blood was pooling on the gym floor, and Evan's hands were absolutely covered in Dean's blood. I just screamed again, and ran to grab Evan. Evan turned around and pushed me onto the floor, leaving bloody fingerprints on my white tank top. Evan then turned back to Dean and started slugging him again. I got up and was about to attempt to pull Evan off of Dean before I got interrupted by the sound of the gym teachers, and the principal running into the gym. The three of them managed to pull Evan off of Dean, who was now coughing up blood. I was so surprised that Dean didn't pass out, and I was sad that he didn't either. That meant that Dean had to witness that pain the entire time. This thought caused me to frown.
"Who else was involved in this?!" the principal demanded for someone to answer the question. Everyone was currently picking themselves up from the ground, coughing and trying to regain their ability to breathe normally. I wondered why this happened? Was it something in the air that I couldn't smell? I wasn't sure.
"Nick and Luke," some other girl replied from somewhere in the crowd.
"You three, come with me," the principal said angrily, hauling Evan with him. I looked at Nick and saw just how mortified he looked. I watched as Luke smiled sympathetically and put a protective hand on Nick's shoulder. Nick flinched away from the sudden touch, but Luke kept his hand steady on the brunette's shoulder. Luke then guided Nick to follow him. The three of them and the principal then left the room. One of the gym teachers immediately picked up Dean and rushed him to the nurse's hospital. The rest of the gym teachers immediately went to clean up the blood, but I needed to ask to change.
I asked the gym teacher and he said yes, so I walked down the hall to the change room in a daze. I could not believe what had just happened. For one, I didn't even know that Evan went to my school. Secondly, I was so angry at what Dean had said to Evan that I could barely walk straight. And lastly, I couldn't believe that Dean would fight someone. But the thing that surprised me the most was that Evan had beat Dean that hard. And that's when I figured out that it wasn't anger that was clouding my vision, and making me not have the ability to walk straight. It was nausea.
"There was so much blood." With this thought I ran straight to the nearest garbage can and deposited everything I had eaten into it. After I was finished vomiting, I walked to the change room and changed my bloody tank top, to a baggy gray shirt. I then made my way back to the gym.
When I got back all of the blood was cleaned up, but I knew exactly where it was moments before. I was sure that I would never forget where it was. I shook my head violently, trying to get that picture out of my head. I looked around and spotted Kris and Lewis in the corner of the gym, so I made my way towards them. When I reached my two best friends, they were talking about what had just happened. But, I really didn't want to think about it, so I tuned out their conversation.
We talked for a couple of minutes until the class started. The gym teacher yelled for everyone to meet in the center of the gym.
"Today we are going to do basketball," the gym teacher stated. Lewis, Kris, and I were all standing near the teacher.
"Fuck. He's such a bitch to make us do stuff like that," I told my friends, trying to lighten the mood, and to get my mind off of what had happened. But apparently this comment spread past my friends.
"Miss. Stone. I heard that," the teacher said angrily. "Principal's office," he stated, pointing his finger. I stared at him in shock, turning completely white. I stuttered but he just kept his finger up. I swallowed and turned around to start walking out of the gym. I looked back to see Kris holding up two middle fingers at the teacher. "Miss. Lasophine!" he exclaimed. "Principal's office at once!" the gym teacher yelled. Kris skipped happily towards me.
"I got your back," she smiled. I gave her a weak smile in return.
We were almost out of the gym before we heard someone else yell something. "F-f-fuck you!" It was Lewis. We looked back to see Lewis with his hands clasped over his mouth. "Oh my god, I am so sorry!" Lewis exclaimed, taking his hands off his mouth. The gym teacher rolled his eyes, knowing that Lewis was just trying to go and support his friends.
"Fine, Mr. Feller. Go to the principal's office," the gym teacher groaned.
"Thank you!" Lewis exclaimed, running over to the two girls.
"You're such an idiot, Lewis," Kris said, doubling over in laughter, and hitting Lewis on the shoulder.
"Hey!" Lewis exclaimed, hitting her on the back of the head. Both of them looked at each other with serious looks on their faces before they both doubled over in laughter. I laughed too. Kris and Lewis were always such a good distraction from my fucked up life. The three of us made our way to the principal's office and were immediately met with yelling.
"You don't understand!" a male voice yelled. "He said I was a freak! And that's why my parents were killed!" It was Evan. Lewis, Kris, and I stood outside the door watching the conversation unfold.
"I don't believe Mr. Dediro would say such a thing," the principal replied calmly.
"He did!" Evan countered, his voice cracking with emotion.
"So, you decided to start a fight after that?" the principal asked.
"No," another voice said. It was Nick. Nick stood up from the chair that he was sitting in. "Dean started it. He punched me first," Nick stated quietly. I could tell he was still scared from the whole situation.
"Mr. Westfield, I appreciate your loyalty to your friend, but lying is not necessary," the principal replied calmly.
"I'm not lying," Nick whispered angrily. I figured that he still couldn't manage his normal voice.
"He seriously isn't!" Luke countered, "you can even check the security footage," Luke added, smiling when he had thought of the idea.
"Fine. I will after your detention. The three of you better get to detention, since school is over now," he stated. I cocked an eyebrow. I totally didn't even hear the bell ring.
"That's not fair!" Evan yelled, slamming his fists onto the desk.
"Do you want a week of detention, Mr. Richardson?"
Evan just groaned and started to walk out of the room. Nick and Luke followed Evan's lead.
The principal then ushered Kris, Lewis, and I into the office.
"You three are getting detention for swearing at a teacher," he stated. We all just groaned. We knew it was coming, and we knew we deserved it. The three of us walked out of the office and down to the detention center. When we arrived at the detention center we saw that the vice principal was leading this detention.
"Welcome to detention,"
