Chapter 4: Detention Officially Sucks.
Evan
Nick, Luke, and I walked down the hallway, and walked into the detention center. The three of us walked into the room and sat down on chairs that were set side by side. I saw that the vice principal was staring into my soul. But I didn't really care, I could only relive what had happened in the gym.
All I saw was blood gushing out of the boy's nose, and I just wanted to make him pay. I thought that the boy deserved every drop of blood that he was losing. I would make him pay. I was going to kill him. I wanted to. God, I wanted to kill him so bad.
I shook my head, trying to focus on reality. I looked over at Luke and saw that he was standing and examining a book that I knew that Luke didn't even care about.
Luke gets really uncomfortable when he's still for a long time, so Nick and I don't question him when he gets up to do something out of the blue.
I then looked to Nick to see that his leg was vibrating up and down, and his hands were shaking. Nick's bright blue eyes were so wide that I was thinking they were going to fall out of his head.
"Nick, are you all right?" I questioned, touching Nick's shoulder. Nick flinched violently, and that gave me the exact answer to my question. I slid my hand down Nick's shoulder and grabbed his hands which were shaking so violently that I thought that he was going to hurt himself by accident. That's when Nick finally looked at me.
Nick's bright blue eyes were filled with unshed tears, and I knew if I said the wrong thing, Nick wasn't going to be able to keep them at bay. I also thought that I saw a bit of red on Nick's cheeks but I ignored that. Nick was obviously flustered. He was like that when he was upset.
"Nick. Tell me what's wrong," I demanded softly. Nick shook his head, and squeezed his eyes shut.
"I-I-I-" he stuttered. I sat there waiting for an answer extremely patiently.
"It's okay," I reassured, ushering Nick to tell me. I rubbed my thumb on the back of Nick's hand, desperately trying to calm the brunette down. Nick took a deep shaky breath.
"I-I just can't get detention," Nick stuttered finally, fear running through every single feature in his face. I frowned and felt anger start to course through my veins.
"You're going to be okay," I stated, trying to comfort Nick and myself. Nick just swallowed and nodded at my desperate attempt to calm him down. I felt Nick hesitantly lean on my side. I wrapped my arm around Nick's shoulder, and let Nick rest his body weight on my side. I heard Nick's breaths come out in uneven wheezes. "Just breathe, Nick," I comforted. "You're going to be okay," I repeated. I cursed myself in my head when I realized that Nick's breathing wasn't getting any better. "Nick, I need you to-" I started but got interrupted by the sound of the door opening and closing, and three other sixteen year olds walked into the room.
I made direct contact with Gabriella. Her eyes were a dark brown color that seemed boring to me at first, but then I looked deeper into her eyes. And they looked almost black. Like a black hole pulling me in and drowning me. Anyone else would think that her eyes were scary but I found them absolutely beautiful. I stared into her stunning eyes for what seemed like forever until someone spoke, breaking my daze.
"Welcome to detention," the male voice said. I snapped my head around to see the vice principal standing at the front of the room. He was the one who had spoken.
I felt something move next to me, and I looked to the side and saw that Nick was now sitting up on his own chair. I cursed myself in my head for getting distracted by Gabriella when Nick needed help.
I watched as Gabriella and her other two friends sat down in chairs next to my friends and I.
"Today for detention, the six of you will be forced to clean and sort out the storage room for all the science supplies," he explained.
"What?! That's gonna take us forever!" yelled a girl that was sitting next to Gabriella.
She had midnight black hair that fell over her chest in waves. She had ocean blue eyes that were fixed on the vice principal. She was wearing baggy jeans and a Metallica T-shirt, with a leather jacket slung over her shoulder.
Trying to cheer Nick up, I elbowed Nick and shrugged in the girls direction. Nick snapped his head around to look at me. I moved my eyebrows up a couple of times. I then mouthed "she's perfect!"
Nick just groaned and rolled his eyes. Luke laughed, but clapped his hands over his mouth to silence it.
"Thank you for the commentary Miss. Lasophine. But, no matter what you say it will not change what you will have to do for this detention," he explained, surprisingly calmly.
"I think you lost," a boy with brown hair and glasses who was sitting next to the girl with black hair said.
"Shut up," she grumbled, hitting the brunette on the shoulder.
"This will not just be a job that you do today," the vice principal said when everyone had stopped talking. "You will work on this until you are done," he added. I saw the girl open her mouth to say something again, but she decided against it. She had probably come to terms that she was only going to make it worse for herself if she argued. "Let's go," the vice principal said. The six of us stood up and walked behind the vice principal all the way to the science lab. "You can begin now," he spoke, starting to walk out of the classroom. "Also," he said from the doorway. "I wouldn't recommend trying to leave. We have cameras everywhere," he added, before finally leaving.
"Ugh!" the girl with black hair exclaimed, throwing her leather jacket down on one of the desks.
"Well since we are all stuck here together, we should probably get to know each other," Gabriella suggested, smiling encouragingly.
"I'm down for that," I replied, taking a seat at one of the desks. Nick just nodded and swallowed, taking a seat at the desk closest to me. I frowned. It always made me upset when Nick was upset. Usually Nick was so outgoing and sarcastic but when he's upset he practically shuts down.
Once, everyone was sitting down at one of the desks, Gabriella spoke again. "Hi! My name is Gabriella Stone! I really like to play guitar and sing," she smiled, moving her blonde hair behind her shoulders. Gabriella then turned to look at the girl with wavy black hair.
"Ugh! Fine! I'll go!" she groaned. "Yo, my name is Christina Lasophine," she explained. "But, do not call me Christina. I hate it. Call me Kris," she added. "I like to play the drums, and I really like rock music," the girl that I now know as Kris stated. "Your turn, idiot," Kris said to the guy with glasses next to her.
"Oh, right," he replied, laughing nervously. "My name is Lewis. Lewis Feller," he stated. "I have an electric guitar named Scarlett," Lewis explained. Kris just groaned and hit herself in the head. I then heard someone speak up who I wasn't expecting to hear from until absolutely necessary.
"You name instruments?" Nick questioned weakly. I looked at Nick and I was happy when I saw color finally returning to his face. His voice was also getting a little bit louder which was comforting.
"Yeah?" Lewis asked in a confused tone, like everyone does it.
Kris just groaned, hit Lewis on the shoulder and said. "Next,"
"Hey. I'm Lucas Crest. But, I go by Luke," he greeted. "My favorite thing to do is stare at myself in the mirror," Luke smiled, cocking an eyebrow, and running his hand through his blonde wavy hair. Kris laughed and I just rolled my eyes. "Your turn, Nicky," Luke added, elbowing Nick in the side.
"My name is Nicholas Westfield," he stated. "But, I go by Nick," he explained. "I really like cars, I guess," Nick added.
"Oh, great my turn," I laughed. "I'm Evan Richardson. And I like a lot of things," I added. I really like to play piano and sing, but only my very close friends know that, so I decided I didn't want to tell all these people that.
"Well, we should probably get cleaning before he comes back and sees that we are doing nothing," Lewis stated, moving his glasses up his nose.
"Chilliax, dork," Luke replied. All of us laughed but Lewis.
"Haha, very funny," Lewis laughed sarcastically.
"Okay, I'll put what he said in other words," Kris said. "Do you idiots want to go home?" she spat. "If you do, let's get this shit over with," she added.
Luke elbowed me in the side and whispered in my ear. "She's fiery. I like her,"
"I don't think you're even in her league," I whispered back, smiling slyly.
"Shut up," he snapped back.
"Thanks, Kris," Lewis smiled.
"Okay, let's do this," Luke groaned, rolling his eyes. All six of us walked into the closet in the room. I groaned when I saw that most of the supplies were thrown all over the supply closet.
"How are we ever going to get this done?!" I questioned. I looked over at the door and saw Luke banging his head against the corner of the door frame, and Nick was leaning against the wall next to him, banging the back of his head against the wall as well. This caused me to let out a laugh. "You guys are idiots," I laughed. They both smiled and continued what they were doing.
"Hey, Evan!" a female voice called out from the other side of the storage closet. "Can you come help me over here?!"
I walked towards the voice and found Gabriella rummaging through a box.
"I'm pretty sure this doesn't belong in here," she laughed, pulling out a couple of bottles of glitter.
"What do you mean?" I questioned, "you didn't do the lab on glitter particles?" I joked. Gabriella let out a small giggle, and put the bottles on the metal counter.
"Do you want to bring this to the art room with me?" she questioned, smiling brightly.
"Of course," I replied, grabbing some of the bottles of glitter that she had placed on the metal counter. "Let's go," I added. We walked to the side of the storage closet that had the door on it. There I saw Luke, Nick, Kris, and Lewis all showing each other tools that they found in boxes. Kris had a knife and Lewis looked genuinely terrified. Luke was showing Nick something gross on his scalpel, which caused Nick to make barfing noises. I just laughed and both Gabriella and I shoved past them. We were in the door frame when someone called my name. "Yeah?" I questioned, looking back at the person who had called my name. It was Nick.
"Where are you going?" Nick asked. Luke was turned to look at me too.
"We are just going to put this stuff in the art room," I stated. Luke just shrugged and went to go show Kris and Lewis what was on his scalpel. Luke loved to scare new people that he met. Nick looked at me and furrowed his eyebrows.
"Okay. Be back soon," he replied softly. I furrowed my eyebrows together, and looked at him in sympathy. Nick always hated being away from me. "I don't know if I can handle Luke on my own," Nick gasped, bright blue eyes widening. I heard Gabriella laugh from beside me.
"Don't worry I'll be back," I replied. "If you need to. Knock him out," I laughed, starting to walk away from Nick.
Gabriella and I walked down the hallway of the school side by side. We didn't say anything to each other, until something resurfaced in my mind.
"That guy," I blurted out. "You knew that guy who said those things about my parents?" I added, looking down to look at the side of her face.
"Yes," Gabriella replied hesitantly. "That's my boyfriend, Dean," she added, anger coating her voice.
"Why in hell is she angry?" I thought vigorously. But Gabriella spoke, interrupting my thoughts.
"I can't believe he would say anything like that," she spat. "I thought he was different," Gabriella paused, finally looking up at me. "I was wrong," she added, venom coursing through her words. "I don't think I can be with someone who says that type of shit,"
I just smiled weakly. This girl. She was something else. Gabriella was different. Gabriella was special. I felt my face get hot and I immediately looked away. There was no way I had feelings for this girl. I couldn't. I wasn't allowed. Love gets in the way of my job. I could never and will never fall in love. I shook my head and swallowed, finally looking back at her.
We kept walking in silence until Gabriella spoke up again. "What were-" her voice wavered, and I knew she was trying to decide what was safe to say. "What were you going to do to Dean?" Gabriella questioned.
I swallowed. I was going to kill him. That was the truth. If the gym teachers hadn't been there I would have killed him. But I couldn't just say that to her.
"I don't know," I lied. "I just wanted to make him pay," I replied honestly. "No one hit's Nick and gets away with it," I added. It was the most truthful thing I had ever said. I love Nick more than anything in the world.
"I understand," Gabriella paused. "You and Nick. You guys are close?" She asked after a while.
"Yeah. We've been best friends practically since we were babies," I replied. "He's my best friend. I would die for Nick," I stated. Gabriella just nodded, taking in the new information.
"What about your blonde friend?" Gabriella questioned.
"Luke?"
"Yeah," she answered.
"What about Luke?" I questioned.
"How long have you guys been friends?" Gabriella asked.
"Since we were kids," I answered. "I always thought he was a show off until I actually got to know him," I said. "He's actually a really good guy," I added, five feet away from the art room. Gabriella just nodded and we walked into the art room. "Okay, so, where the hell does this glitter go?" I questioned.
"Over here," she smiled. "Have you ever been in here?" Gabriella asked.
"Is it bad to say that I haven't?" I chuckled. "I'm not an arts and crafts kind of guy," I added, rubbing the back of my neck with my palm.
"It's okay," she replied, leading me to a cabinet near the back of the room. "Right here," Gabriella said, opening the cabinet and pointing to a box of all sorts of colored glitter. To be honest I wasn't sure I had ever seen that much color before. The establishment doesn't have any color but white, gray, and black. It gets quite draining not having color to be completely honest.
I put my bottles of glitter among the rest of the other bottles, and Gabriella followed suit. We then walked out of the classroom and back to the science lab, not saying a word to each other.
When we got back to the science lab, we saw Nick, Luke, Kris, and Lewis all pulling things out of boxes and practically throwing them onto the giant metal table in the center of the storage closet.
"What are you guys doing?" Gabriella questioned, cocking an eyebrow.
"What does it look like we're doing?" Kris replied, throwing more stuff onto the table. "We're cleaning all this shit," she added.
"We really want to go home," Nick admitted. Gabriella just nodded, and joined the mass panic to clean. But, I immediately took charge of the situation.
"Okay, everyone stop!" I exclaimed. Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked directly at me. "If we want to get this done, we have to have a strategy," I told everyone.
"Okay, what are you thinking, Princess?" Luke questioned. I groaned and rolled my eyes at the stupid nickname. I came up with the plan step by step in my brain. I looked over to see Nick nodding at each of my steps. He was reading my mind again.
"I have a plan," I said at last. "Huddle up team,"
