Episode 4
(In a small study, in Maxtible's house, the Doctor sits down behind a white three panelled console that takes up most of the room. Beside him stands the Princess. In the corner is a looming Dalek, and by the door stand Maxtible and Waterfield.)
DALEK 1: (To Doctor & Princess) Begin.
(The Doctor and Princess look to each other. The Princess then leans forward, as the two begin to operate the controls of the console together. After a moment…)
DOCTOR: I've located Jamie. Hmm... Seems he's already entered the South wing of the house.
MAXTIBLE: Then he's survived the first test.
DALEK 1: Unacceptable, data was not recorded.
PRINCESS: Oh, it'll be all right.
MAXTIBLE: Yes, there are plenty more tests to come.
DOCTOR: Such as?
PRINCESS: Doctor, his heart rate.
(The Doctor looks over the readouts on the console.)
DOCTOR: Yes, well, he might just be startled from whatever test he was just subjected to.
PRINCESS: (Pointing) Or it could be because of the large man advancing towards him.
(The Princess is pointing a small screen on the console, which shows a large man – Kemel – in a vest and fez advancing towards Jamie in a hallway.)
DOCTOR: Yes, I suppose that's another explanation.
MAXTIBLE: Ah, that would be Kemel. He should prove a most interesting challenge for your companion. Good luck with your work. Come, Waterfield.
(Maxtible ushers Waterfield out the door, before shutting it behind him. Meanwhile, on the screen, as the Doctor and Princess work the controls of the console, they watch as Jamie is grabbed by Kemel around the throat. In blind panic, Jamie throws a punch, only for Kemel to catch it in his hand and stop the punch dead. Jamie then stamps down on Kemel's foot, prompting the man to shove him away. Quickly recovering, Kemel advances as Jamie climbs back up to his feet, using a nearby table. Grabbing the vase on the table, Jamie smashes it against Kemel's head, as the large man goes to grab him. This dazes Kemel as Jamie darts past him. But before Jamie can reach the end of the hallway, Kemel recovers and chases him down. As Kemel grabs Jamie by the shoulders, the Scotsman tries to elbow Kemel in the chest, but it has no effect. Kemel then takes the opportunity to grab both Jamie's wrists, and the two begin struggling back and forth.)
PRINCESS: (Quietly) Come on, Jamie…
(But Jamie is unable to overpower or break free of Kemel's hold. So instead, he places his leg behind Kemel and pushes forward with all his weight. Kemel trips and goes down, pulling Jamie with him before letting go. Jamie then pounces, punching Kemel while he's down, but it has little effect. Kemel responds by bringing his fist down like a hammer, but Jamie manages to roll aside. Both climb back up to their feet. Grabbing a chair that's against the wall, Jamie throws it back at Kemel. Kemel catches the chair and throws it back at Jamie, but the Scotsman manages to get through a nearby door and close it before the chair finds him. Instead, it smashes against the door breaking apart. Now inside a dusty forgotten room, Jamie braces himself against the door, and listens. On the other side, Kemel prepares to charge at the door. He does so, making a ruckus as he approaches. Hearing this, Jamie waits, then pulls open the door. Kemel comes charging through, unable to stop himself, and ends up going through an open window. Jamie, surprised by this, runs to the window out of concern. Looking out, he sees Kemel has fallen down a slated roof, and is now dangling from the edge, holding onto the gutter over a substantial drop. Thinking quickly, Jamie searches the room until he finds a coil of rope. He then throws one end out the window and down the side of the house. Kemel, about to lose his grip, grabs a hold. Jamie struggles to take up the slack as Kemel climbs back up onto the slated roof.)
DOCTOR: Wait a moment…
PRINCESS: What is it?
DOCTOR: Look.
(The Doctor points to another small screen on the console, which shows a Dalek moving through the hallway Jamie and Kemel were just fighting in. On its sucker is a piece of cloth.)
PRINCESS: What's it up to?
(The Dalek enters a room at the end of the hallway, a cold dungeon like room with some more Dalek machinery in the corner – a small platform for someone to stand on, with two polls on either side containing several large bulbs. Next to it is a bed.)
DOCTOR: This must have been where they were keeping Victoria.
(The Doctor and Princess watch, as the Dalek on screen drops the cloth its holding to the floor, just inside the room. It then retreats back into the hallway, hiding in an alcove.)
PRINCESS: Can you zoom in on what it dropped?
(The Doctor fiddles with a few controls before the screen zooms in on the cloth left on the floor. It reveals to the time travellers that it is actually a handkerchief with the initials, 'V.W.' sewn into the corner.)
PRINCESS: Victoria Waterfield. But I still don't understand, why leave her handkerchief there? Is it meant to be a clue?
DOCTOR: No. It's bait for a trap.
PRINCESS: (To Dalek) But that's not fair!
DALEK 1: Continue with the experiment.
PRINCESS: You're luring him into a trap, how is this supposed to help us find the–
DOCTOR: It's all right, Princess.
PRINCESS: Doctor?
DOCTOR: Just watch. I promise you, Jamie will make the right choice. In fact, he already has.
(The Princess stares in confusion at the Doctor for a moment, before both go back to watching the first screen, showing Jamie as he helps Kemel back in through the window. Catching his breath, Kemel is shocked and amazed by what Jamie has done. Jamie says nothing, simply makes sure Kemel isn't about to attack him, then turns and leaves the room. Back in the hallway, he proceeds to the end, where he enters Victoria's room. He sees it is empty, but notices the handkerchief on the floor. As he goes to pick is up, Jamie is suddenly shoved from behind by Kemel. As Jamie stumbled into the bed, Kemel steps back, and a sharp axe swings through the space once occupied by Jamie. As the Scotsman stares in shock at the axe that almost killed him, Kemel makes his way over to him and gently helps him up to his feet, before escorting him from the room. The Princess and Doctor sigh in relief.)
DALEK 1: What is the progress of the human factor?
DOCTOR: It took courage to fight Kemel.
DALEK 1: The Daleks are afraid of no-one.
PRINCESS: Would you have saved his life after he attacked you?
DALEK 1: All enemies of the Daleks must be exterminated.
PRINCESS: But Jamie did, and if he hadn't, he would have been caught in your trap.
DOCTOR: If you want the human factor, a part of it must include mercy.
(The Dalek falls silent. The Doctor and Princess share a look of mild concern – worried they might be changing the Daleks' mind on taking the human factor. They then go back to work, operating the console while watching the screens. And on one screen, it shows Jamie in the hallway where he fought Kemel, leaning against the wall. He is catching his breath after his near-death experience, as Kemel then emerges from the dusty room, the rope Jamie used to save his life looped over his shoulder.)
JAMIE: (To Kemel) Thank you…for what you did back there.
(Kemel smiles at Jamie and bows his head gracefully.)
JAMIE: Aye, you're an odd one, I'll say that… Aye, well, I…I suppose we're both a bit touched, eh? Knocking each other about the place…and saving one another's lives.
(Kemel nods in agreement.)
JAMIE: You don't say much, do you?
(Kemel puts his finger to his lips, and points to himself with his other hand.)
JAMIE: Oh, I see, you can't talk.
(Kemel nods.)
JAMIE: Aye, well, you're a sight better than a number of people I know who can. I wonder what your name is?
(Kemel looks around before spotting a dusty table in the hallway. He proceeds over to it with Jamie following. Kemel then writes his name in the dust while Jamie watches.)
JAMIE: Kemel?
(Kemel nods.)
JAMIE: Well, I'm Jamie.
(Jamie offers his hand, but Kemel bows to him instead.)
JAMIE: Hey–Hey, what is that–? Now, come on, I want none of that. We're to be friends, d'you hear? Friends.
(Kemel smiles joyfully, prompting Jamie to smile back. It's then, Kemel remembers the handkerchief Jamie found. Kemel points to it, specifically, the initials on it.)
JAMIE: V.W. I know. Victoria Waterfield.
(Kemel reaches into his vest and pulls out a folded bit of paper. From within the fold, he pulls out a small flower. Kemel then points to the initials on the handkerchief, then the flower in his hand, and then finally to himself.)
JAMIE: Oh, Ms Waterfield gave you the flower?
(Kemel nods.)
JAMIE: You like her?
(Kemel looks longingly at the flower in his hand.)
JAMIE: Of course. Then what are we fighting for? Do you not know what I'm doing here, Kemel? Victoria Waterfield is being held a prisoner here somewhere.
(Kemel turns serious, before he points to Jamie and then himself.)
JAMIE: Together?
(Kemel nods.)
JAMIE: Aye, we'll go together. There's no one I'd rather have with me.
(The Princess frowns at the screen showing Jamie and Kemel.)
PRINCESS: Jamie.
DOCTOR: I don't think he means it like that, Princess.
PRINCESS: I should hope not, after all we've been through together.
DOCTOR: Remember we did have a rather heated argument the last time we were together.
PRINCESS: I know, but–
DALEK 1: Cease communication.
DOCTOR: Why?
DALEK 1: Communication does not relate to human factor testing.
DOCTOR: I disagree. (Clears throat) Despite Kemel's inability to speak, Jamie found a way to understand him. Communication is vital to understanding, but even more so when two individuals can't communicate by common means.
DALEK 1: Dalek communications are full functioning.
DOCTOR: But what about with other species? Ones who don't communicate as we do now?
DALEK 1: Unimportant.
DOCTOR: Not regarding the human factor it's not.
PRINCESS: Then there's equality.
DALEK 1: Explain.
PRINCESS: Kemel thought he had to treat Jamie as someone more important than himself. Jamie, however, saw both himself and Kemel as equal. Despite their differences, they are both wonderful human beings who respect one another, and have saved each other's lives.
DOCTOR: And because of that, they can now work together.
PRINCESS: Turning an enemy, into a friend.
DOCTOR: And then there was the emotion Kemel exhibited.
DALEK 1: We only require the human factor.
DOCTOR: Of course, but emotions help define the human factor.
PRINCESS: Particularly love.
DOCTOR: It can be a powerful emotion, giving one more strength than they dare imagine.
PRINCESS: And all because of one kind act.
(Meanwhile, the screen on the console shows that Jamie and Kemel are about to enter a new hallway. However, as they do, Jamie spots something at the end of the hallway and pushes Kemel back behind the corner. Both then cautiously peer around, shocked at the sight of a Dalek heading down the hallway away from them.)
JAMIE: (Quietly) They do exist…
(Kemel stares at Jamie with a confused expression.)
JAMIE: My friends, they tried to warn me about these things. They're called Daleks.
(Back in the study, the Doctor and Princess look to each other before looking to the Dalek. But when it doesn't react, they go back to working and watching Jamie and Kemel. The screen shows that Kemel is still confused.)
JAMIE: Eh, never mind, Kemel. As long as we stay out of sight, we shouldn't have to worry about them.
(Kemel seems unsure but nods all the same. Jamie then leads him down the hallway after the Dalek. However, as they walk, Jamie's foot lands on a pressure plate.)
JAMIE: Down!
(Jamie pulls Kemel down to the floor, as a mace swings down from the ceiling swiping by just above their heads. They stay low, as the mace swings back and forth, losing momentum with each arc of its swing. Once it comes to a stop, the two stand up, brush themselves off and continue on. Only more cautiously now. Meanwhile, back in the study…)
PRINCESS: (To Dalek) Using the same traps isn't going to help narrow down the human factor.
DOCTOR: Not entirely true, Princess.
(The Princess looks to the Doctor in confusion.)
DALEK 1: What have you learned?
DOCTOR: Human beings have five senses. Sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. But there is instinct too. Jamie used instinct to avoid your trap.
PRINCESS: Doctor, look.
(The Princess points to one of the screens on the console. The Doctor looks, seeing a large dining room, with a fireplace, hunting trophies and a balcony overhead. A balcony where a beautiful girl is stood, in a white dress with shoulder length brown hair. She appears near identical to the portrait the time travellers saw before, but this is not the same woman. This is her daughter.)
PRINCESS: It's Victoria.
DOCTOR: So it is.
PRINCESS: She's younger than I thought she'd be.
DOCTOR: About sixteen years old I should think. But she's definitely her mother's daughter. Waterfield was right, the resemblance is uncanny.
PRINCESS: She looks terrified.
DOCTOR: Wouldn't you be if you were a prisoner of the Daleks?
PRINCESS: True.
DOCTOR: (Pointing) Look, there's Jamie and Kemel.
(On the screen, Jamie and Kemel are crouched behind the dining table. While on the other side, an unsuspecting Dalek looks up at Victoria.)
DALEK 2: (To Victoria) Inspection is over. Return to your room.
(Victoria does as told, sadly leaving the balcony and heading through a door into a room. Once she is gone, the Dalek also leaves the dining room, so that only Jamie and Kemel remain.)
JAMIE: (Quietly) She's very beautiful, Kemel.
(Kemel nods in wholehearted agreement. Kemel then notices something on the wall. He walks over, taking a mace off the wall.)
JAMIE: What are you going to do with that?
(Kemel points to where the Dalek exited, then drops the mace into his hand, gripping it firmly.)
JAMIE: You'll attack the Daleks.
(Kemel nods. He then points to himself, and down another hallway.)
JAMIE: Draw them off down the corridor?
(Kemel nods again. He then points to Jamie, then up to the balcony above.)
JAMIE: While I go up there and rescue her somehow? It's too dangerous, Kemel. Besides, it needs two of us up there. Oh, but how?
(As Jamie ponders this, back in the study, the Doctor and Princess are operating the console, under the Dalek's watchful gaze.)
DALEK 1: What is the significance of this thought pattern?
DOCTOR: While both Jamie and Kemel obviously want to achieve their goal, being suicidal is foolish. Self-preservation is a strong human factor.
PRINCESS: The ideal outcome is for them to both survive and get away with Victoria.
DOCTOR: Would a Dalek sacrifice its comrades to achieve an objective?
DALEK 1: Daleks will do whatever it takes to achieve victory.
DOCTOR: But just like before, when Kemel saved Jamie, you might need to really on others. You can't do that if they die pointlessly.
(Meanwhile, the screen shows Jamie checking the hallway the Dalek went down. He sees and hears no sign of it, so returns to the dining room where Kemel is waiting, mace still in hand.)
JAMIE: No sign of that Dalek. It's like he's disappeared.
(Kemel is concerned by this.)
JAMIE: I know, but now might be our best chance. What do you say?
(Kemel looks up to the balcony, thinking hard for a moment. He then puts down the mace and removes the rope from his shoulder.)
JAMIE: Good man.
(Uncoiling the rope, Kemel then throws one end up and over the railing of the balcony. As it comes back down, he holds the two bits of rope together, then passes them to Jamie. Jamie accepts, taking a moment before he begins the climb up to the balcony. It's hard, but he manages to make it up rather quickly to Kemel's surprise. Once Jamie is on the balcony, he takes up the slack of the rope and waves for Kemel to come up. Kemel takes the rope in his hands and begins to climb. Though due to his size and weight, it proves more difficult, as even with Jamie taking up some of the slack, the wooden railing is being creak and crack.)
JAMIE: (Hissing) Look out, the rail's going to break!
(Kemel continues on regardless, reaching up as Jamie grabs his hand. Jamie then pulls him up the rest of the way, relieving the pressure from the railing – although there is a noticeable crack in it, and it no longer looks as strong as it did before. Now up on the balcony together, Kemel shakes Jamie's hand in thanks. Jamie smiles, before then turning serious as he approaches the only door. He knocks on the door.)
JAMIE: Miss Waterfield?
(Jamie tries the door but it doesn't open.)
JAMIE: Can you open the door? We've come to get you.
(Hearing a noise, Kemel looks over the side of the balcony, seeing a Dalek entering the dining room below. Kemel points this out to Jamie, who comes to join him by the balcony, as Kemel quickly pulls the rope up. The Dalek hasn't seen them yet, as it surveys the dining room. But as Jamie and Kemel watch from the balcony above, neither are aware of the door opening behind them. Or of the second Dalek, that glides out of the room…)
