Chapter 8: I Guess the Vamp's Out the Bag.
Evan
"Hello, Gabriella," I said, relaxing on the couch, kicking my feet up on the coffee table.
"What are you doing here?! How did you get in here?!" Gabriella yelled.
"Your front door was unlocked," I replied, calmly.
"Why are you here?" she sighed in defeat.
"I needed to talk to you," I began.
"Okay, go," Gabriella said in a very impatient tone.
"So-" I started, but got interrupted by a crashing sound from the kitchen.
"Shit! Sorry!" a male voice exclaimed from the kitchen. Gabriella ran to the kitchen, and I followed right behind her.
When I got into the kitchen I saw that there were multiple glass bowls lying shattered on the floor. I gave Luke a dirty look. I specifically told him not to break anything when we got here.
"My bad," Luke started. "I was looking for some cereal for Nicky," he added. I looked behind me, to see Nick, and Lauren leaning against the counter.
Nick glared at Luke. "Don't go blaming me for your idiotic ideas,"
"Why are you guys in my house too?!" Gabriella exclaimed, throwing her arms up in the air.
"Your front door was unlocked," Luke, Nick, and Lauren replied in unison. And, I chuckled when Gabriella let out a frustrated sigh.
"Where do you keep your cereal?" Luke asked.
"Top cupboard," Gabriella sighed.
"Thanks, Sunshine," he replied. She scoffed at the nickname.
"Where did you guys go when you left school at lunch?" Gabreilla asked Nick, Lauren, and I, completely ignoring Luke all together.
"We had a mission. Had to kill a couple of-" Luke started, but I clapped my hands over the blonde's mouth.
"I didn't get to telling her that yet," I hissed.
"Shit. My bad," Luke winced.
"Lucas. You fucking idiot!" Lauren exclaimed. "You seriously-" she started, before whipping her head towards the window in the kitchen.
"What's wrong, Lauren?" Nick questioned, walking up to his twin sister. Lauren didn't say anything, she just continued to stare out the window.
"It's vamps. Eleven of them," Lauren said suddenly. "And they're hungry," she added. All of us, but Gabriella, went into a ready stance. I was not going to let anything bad happen to Gabriella. Within seconds eleven people were now standing in the kitchen, with us.
"Warlocks," a girl sneered. She had long black hair, and was wearing a black skin tight dress.
"Vampires," Nick said, mimicking the tone that the girl had used.
"Vamp-" Gabriella started, but I clapped my hand over her mouth. Her eyes remained wide in horror, as she stood weakly.
"Does anyone smell that?" the girl asked. "It's a different smell of blood," she said, licking her lips. "I've never smelt something like-" she started, but was interrupted.
"That's enough, Evelyn," a male voice in the crowd said. He stepped forward and the group separated to clear the way for him. He was definitely their leader.
This guy had curly honey colored hair, and blood red eyes. He was wearing a skin tight black T-shirt that outlined his muscles, and a pair of perfectly fitted Levi's jeans. His nails were painted black, and he had several rings on his fingers, and he had a gold chain over top of his shirt. He had high cheekbones, a perfectly hooked nose, and skin as white as snow. He also had a very sophisticated look to him, something you would see in either the rich or in the past. He was practically the definition of perfection when it came to looks, which made me quite angry, because I was supposed to be the hot one. This guy looked like he was about the same age as us.
"Hello my name is Benjamin Graves," he told us, his voice was smooth, deep, and very hypnotizing. "But you can call me Ben," he added.
"What are you doing here vamps?" I asked in a threatening voice.
"Woah, we aren't here to harm anyone," Ben replied calmly.
"How did you get here?" Lauren asked. "The sun is up," she added. I just kept my hand over Gabriella's mouth, just hoping that she wouldn't reveal that she was an Anthropoid.
"We've been here for a while," said Ben. "Since last night," he added.
"W-why?" Nick stuttered. I looked back to see him looking quite flushed. He was quite scared of vampires, I guess.
"Because as Evelyn was saying. There is a very delicious smell in this house. I would like to know what it is," Ben explained. "And it smells like it's her," Ben added, pointing to Gabriella. She gasped, I dropped my hand, and stepped in front of her quickly.
"You aren't touching her," I said angrily. "Or you won't have teeth to eat with anymore," I threatened.
"Calm down, lover boy," Ben replied, lips curling upwards into a wicked smile. "If you won't hand her over. We will have to take her," he added.
"What?" Luke questioned.
Ben pondered for a moment before speaking. "Like if you don't give her to us, we will kill every last one of you," he smiled.
"I will never give her to you," I snapped back.
"Okay, you asked for it," Ben hissed, showing his sharp vampire teeth. I wound back my arms, about to use my magic, but I remembered that I didn't have any.
"Shit!" I exclaimed, as Ben ran at me, and pinned me to the wall in the living room by the neck.
"Where's your powers, warlock?" Ben laughed, tightening his hold on my neck.
"I-it's complicated," I spluttered.
"I bet," Ben smiled wickedly.
"Nick, I need help," I thought. "He's choking me," I thought, hoping that Nick would hear my thoughts. Within seconds a blast of magic hit Ben, and made him fall to his knees. I scrambled away quickly and brought Nick into a quick side hug. "Thanks, man," I thought.
"You're welcome," he replied, speaking out loud.
"That was really rude," Ben spat, standing up quickly. He then eyed Nick up and down. "Ooh la la. You're quite handsome," Ben added, after taking in Nick's appearance. Nick looked away from Ben quickly for a second and then looked back with a scowl.
"Get your vampires to back off, Graves," I spat.
"We just want a little taste," Ben smiled, licking his lips. "She smells so delicious," he said. "Like old preserved blood. But, a stronger and more airy smell," Ben added, sniffing the air.
"Stop," I whispered angrily.
"If you get in my way. I won't mind having a little warlock appetizer," Ben replied, showing his vampire teeth in a wide, wicked smile.
"You better not touch her or else I-" I started, but was interrupted by a high shrill female scream. But, I knew that that scream wasn't Lauren's.
"Gabriella!" I yelled, running into the kitchen. I cursed when I saw that nobody was in the kitchen anymore. I heard her scream again, and I knew it was coming from outside. I rushed out the door, and into the backyard, despite Nick calling my name. That's when I found her lying on the pavement with a vampire standing over top of her. "Gabriella!" I yelled again, sprinting across the pavement to a shaded area to my right. I reached Gabriella and threw myself against the vampire. We both fell to the ground. "Get out of here!" I yelled at Gabriella. I heard her feet slap against the concrete, and I sighed in relief. I struggled against the arms that tried to keep me on the ground. "Get off!" I said through gritted teeth. Desperately trying to get out of the hold the vampire had me in.
"Your powers are gone, little warlock," the female vampire stated, who I now recognized as the vampire who Ben had called Evelyn.
"I prefer temporarily removed," I spat, kneeing Evelyn in the ribs. She gasped and put her hands over her ribs, allowing me to wiggle my way out of her hold. But, I was caught again. This time by the neck.
"It would take me less than a second to snap your neck," Evelyn explained.
"I would prefer it if you didn't," I suggested, letting out a choked laugh.
"Give us the girl," she hissed.
"Would you free me and my friends if we gave you her?" I asked.
"Yes," she replied.
"Okay," I said, pretending to think about the offer. "No," I laughed when Evelyn hissed at my annoyance.
"You're dead, warlock," she laughed. "Any last words?" Evelyn asked.
"Guacamole," I replied. "I love that word," I added.
Evelyn just groaned in annoyance. "Warlocks are weird," she muttered. "Goodbye-" she started, but then I heard a voice.
"Let him go!" a female voice exclaimed.
"Gabriella, get out of here!" I yelled.
"What are you going to do, Anthropoid?" Evelyn questioned. "Goodbye, warlock," she spat, smiling at me.
"No!" Gabriella screamed, and I was immediately blinded with a white light. I heard Evelyn hiss in agony, and I was released. I scrambled to my feet with my eyes closed, because the light was too much for my eyes. When I finally opened my eyes I saw that the light was gone. I looked around and saw a pile of ash sitting next to me.
"What the hell?" I questioned.
"What did I just do?" Gabriella questioned, looking at me in horror.
"I have no idea," I responded.
"Evan-" Gabriella said weakly. She staggered on her feet, and fell to the ground.
"Damn it!" I spat, holding her head.
"She must have fainted," I thought. I wasn't entirely surprised. After all she had been through today I would have probably fainted too. I looked around and saw that Luke and Lauren were walking towards us. They were drenched in sweat and black vampire blood.
"Where's Nick?!" Lauren yelled.
"I don't know!" I yelled back. They ran towards us and stopped short seeing Gabriella's limp body.
"What happened to her?" Lauren asked.
"I'm pretty sure she fainted," I explained.
"Damn," Luke sang. "Imagine fainting," he added.
"You must have a pretty good imagination then. Remember that you faint whenever you see a spider," I laughed.
Luke just groaned and rolled his eyes. "Yeah, yeah. You're a-" Luke started, but he was interrupted by agonized screaming.
"Nick!" I exclaimed, jumping up and leaving Gabriella lying on the ground. "Shit!" I cursed. I had just remembered that I had left Nick all by himself to deal with Ben. I ran into the living room to see a bunch of vampires kicking a limp body that was emitting screams. But, Ben was nowhere in sight. "Nick!" I exclaimed even louder. I ran towards the vampires, and body chucked a couple of the vampires, so I was now standing in the middle of the vampire swarm. I was almost stepping on Nick. "Nick, get up," I said to him. "Let's go," I added, half dragging the brunette out of the circle of recovering vampires. I dragged him away quickly into the light of the open door, before the vampires had noticed.
"Evan," Nick muttered. "I'm okay," Nick added. "What happened to your girlfriend?" he questioned, when he saw Gabriella's limp body. I felt like he was hiding something from me, but I wasn't going to push him right now.
I groaned and rolled my eyes when he called her my girlfriend. "She fainted," I answered.
"Seriously?" Nick said, unwrapping his arm from my shoulder.
He wasn't hurt too badly. He had a couple of cuts that bled through his skin tight T-shirt, he was limping, and it looked like his arm was broken, but it was nothing that the healers back at the establishment couldn't heal.
"She's been through a lot today," I replied defensively.
"Okay," he whispered. "Sorry," he added. I let out a frustrated sigh, then stopped him and took off his fancy jacket that he had on. "What are you doing?" he asked me. Once I took his jacket off I tied it around his shoulder and put his arm through. Nick winced in pain at that, but allowed me to do it. I sighed when I finished making the sling for his arm. "This is a really expensive jacket to have you know," Nick smiled.
"It would have been ruined anyway," I answered. We then walked back to Luke and Lauren who were standing over Gabriella. "We should bring her to the establishment," I stated.
"What?!" Nick cried. "We can't bring an Anthropoid to the establishment!" he exclaimed.
"I will never ever say this again. But I think Nick is right," Luke said. "Don't ever quote me on that or I'll kill you," he added, looking at Nick.
Nick just smiled. "I won't quote you. But, I'll remember it forever," he said dramatically, drawing the last word out.
Luke glared at Nick, and Nick just laughed at the look on his face. "I hate you," Luke spat.
"Can we focus on the unconscious girl in front of us!" I practically yelled.
"Sorry, sorry," Luke answered hastily.
"I still think we should bring her to the establishment," I told them.
"She's an Anthropoid!" Nick hissed.
"Actually I'm not sure of that," Lauren blurted out. "She took away Evan's powers," she pointed out.
"And, she saved me," I added. "She produced light somehow, in a dark place,"
"What are you talking about?" Nick questioned.
"Somehow she killed a vamp, Nick!" I yelled.
"W-what? How?" he asked.
"I don't know," I replied quickly. "The vamp was about to kill me but she screamed and then light just blinded me," I added. "Then all the vamp was was ash," I told them.
"Seriously?" Luke questioned.
"Yes," I replied.
"Maybe she's not an Anthropoid," Luke pondered.
"You've got to be kidding me!" Nick exclaimed. "You can't tell me you believe this shit!" he added.
"I might not believe in that type of shit but, I do believe in Evan, and you should too," Luke shot back.
"He's right, Nick," Lauren added.
"Please, Nick. Trust me, just this once," I begged. "Besides, she already knows about the supernatural world now," I added.
An indecisive expression crossed his face, and we all waited patiently for his answer.
"Fine," he replied at last.
"Oh my god! Thank you so much, Nick! I owe you, man!" I exclaimed, giving the brunette boy a quick side hug, careful not to hit his broken arm. I then walked over to the limp body lying on the grass and picked Gabriella up bridal style. "Let's go then," I added.
"What about the vampires?" Lauren questioned.
"Oh right. Shit, I didn't think about that," I replied.
"Well, they will leave at night since they're looking for Little Miss. Sunshine, right?" Luke questioned, "so as long as no one's home until night, everything will be fine," he added.
We all just stared at him in surprise.
"Did you actually say something smart?" Nick asked, in utter disbelief.
"Yeah, I did. I know it's so surprising," Luke replied in a sarcastic tone. "You're a bitch," he added quickly. "I'm actually quite smart," Luke told us.
"Okay, there's no need to start joking," Nick replied.
"Bitch," he hissed. Nick and I laughed at Luke's anger.
"Are we going now?" Lauren asked impatiently.
"Yes," I replied quickly. We started walking quickly to the establishment. When we reached the "Cat's Eye Cafe" I pulled the book and we all stepped into the elevator. Luke stomped three times, and the elevator jolted downwards. When the elevator stopped we all stepped out, and walked quickly to the infirmary.
"Mom?" Luke called out when we reached the infirmary. Claire is one of the healers at the establishment.
"What is it Lucas? I'm working you-" she started, but stopped dead in her tracks when she saw us.
I couldn't even begin to imagine how bad we looked right now. Lauren and Luke were drenched in black vampire blood from head to toe, Nick was really banged up with a broken arm, I was carrying an unconscious girl, and I probably had some pretty gnarly bruises as well.
"What the hell did you guys get into now?" Claire questioned, shaking her head. "Put her down here," Claire said, pointing at the bed behind her. I laid Gabriella on the bed with extreme care, and cradled her head to rest perfectly on the pillow. "You come sit here," she ordered, looking at Nick. "You two go clean up, and Evan you have to explain to Mr. Westfield why Nick's all banged up," she added in an irritated tone.
I felt rage fill my entire body at that. After what Clint had done to Nick, I don't know if I could face him without punching him in the face.
"And, if I were you, I wouldn't mention the girl," Claire smiled slightly, winking one eye, and breaking me out of my thoughts.
"Thanks, Claire," I half smiled.
"You're welcome," she replied. "Now, go," Claire added.
I hesitated slightly because of the empty look in Nick's eyes, but turned around anyway. I walked down the hallway and quickly went all the way up to Clint's office. When I arrived I knocked on the door, and a tall man opened the door.
Clint was tall and lanky, with slicked back dark brown hair, and ice cold blue eyes. The hate in his eyes made a shiver go down my entire spine. He was also wearing a suit that probably cost over a thousand dollars.
"What is it Evan?" Clint questioned, ice cold eyes staring into my soul.
"Can I come in?" I asked. Clint gestured for me to walk past him and go into his office. "So, Nick and I went on a mission today," I started, immediately cutting Luke and Lauren out of the story. I didn't want them getting in trouble as well. I would take the fall for all of our actions. "And, we got ambushed by vampires. Nick got pretty banged up," I told him, looking anywhere but at his face. The urge to punch him was about to overwhelm me.
Clint cocked an eyebrow at that last part. "How banged up?" he asked.
"I'm pretty sure he broke his arm," I replied. "But, Claire is healing him right now," I added quickly.
"Very well," Clint replied. "Is that all?" he asked.
"Yes," I stated, hostility lacing my voice like venom. I quickly walked out of the office, and let out an extremely angry sigh when Clint shut the door.
"Bitch," I said under my breath.
I quickly walked back to the infirmary, and saw that Nick was no longer here. He was probably in the back room. I then dragged a seat over next to Gabriella. I then felt myself begin to drift off, and I hoped to god that she would be awake when I woke up.
