Chapter 9: Very Late April Fools Joke.
Gabriella
My eyes flickered open, and I looked around slowly. I had absolutely no idea where I was. I felt myself begin to panic, but I then laid eyes on a sleeping Evan which calmed me down immediately. I also saw a sleeping Nick on the bed beside me as well. Nick's arm was wrapped in a cast, and a sling. I could just tell that he had broken it pretty badly. But, then the most pressing matter crossed my mind.
"Where the hell am I?" I thought to myself. I looked at Evan again, and he looked very peaceful while he was sleeping. No secrets, no stupid jokes, just peace. But, I still needed to know where I was, so I tapped him on the shoulder.
Evan shot up to his feet, and looked as if he was about to fight someone.
"Woah, calm down," I laughed.
"Sorry," he chuckled nervously, sitting back down in his chair. "How are you feeling?" Evan asked.
"I've been better," I replied. "Where are we?" I asked.
"It's called the establishment," Evan stated. He was still talking but flashes of yesterday began to cross my mind.
"What the fuck are you?" I asked him, terror coating my voice.
He just sighed frustratedly. "I had a feeling this was going to come up," said Evan.
"You think?!" I yelled, trying to scramble away from him.
"Calm down," Evan chuckled, grabbing my forearm.
"Calm down?! Calm down?! How am I supposed to calm down?!" I screamed.
"I get it. This must be scary for you," replied Evan.
"Vampires?! Warlocks?! Is this some sort of fucking April Fools prank?!" I yelled, "but, I'm afraid you're about three months late!" I added angrily.
"Well, I guess you know my big secret now," Evan chuckled.
"This isn't funny," I replied, "a bunch of people who could move at lightning speed, just tried to kill me and you! And somehow I shot light out of my hands! This isn't what I classify as funny, so why in the hell are you laughing?!" I yelled.
"Sorry, this has been my entire life. I forgot that this is all new to you," he replied.
"This has to be a dream. No, scratch dream, this has to be a nightmare!" I exclaimed. I pinched myself, and when that didn't work I slapped myself in the face. Evan grabbed my wrist quickly with extreme force.
"What the hell are you doing?" Evan asked, anger seeping through his usually monotone voice.
"Trying to wake myself up," I explained.
"You're not asleep. Why would I be in your dream?" Evan asked, raising an eyebrow, and wearing a cocky smile.
"Aghhh! Shut up!" I yelled in frustration, getting out of the bed. Apparently too quickly, because I got dizzy and felt myself sway sideways. My legs swept from underneath me, and Evan caught me by wrapping his arm around my back. I looked him straight in the eye, and felt my cheeks get hot.
"Careful," he warned, his one green eye locking with mine. I caught myself wondering what he would look like if he didn't cover his other eye.
"Prince Charming to the rescue," a groggy voice sounded from beside us. I looked to see Nick sitting straight up in the bed.
"Shut up," Evan and I snapped at the newly awakened boy.
I stood up on my own, and Nick made a sick look at Evan, which Evan returned with a look of humorous anger.
"So, you guys are warlocks?" I asked again, not believing them at all.
"Yeah," Nick replied.
"You guys are so funny," I laughed, with a unhumourous tone.
"Do you want proof?" Nick asked.
"Sure," I replied, rolling my eyes.
"This is going to be hard with one arm," Nick sneered.
"Just do it," Evan snipped into the conversation.
"Says the guy who lost his magic," Nick snapped back wittily.
"Shut up. Just do it," Evan answered.
Nick groaned, stood up from the hospital bed, and held his hand out in front of him. Nick flourished his hand around in a circle, and a flame appeared from his fingertips.
"Holy shit!" I exclaimed.
Nick laughed, and so did Evan at my reaction.
"That's amazing!" I laughed, feeling tears fill my eyes. This was something out of a dream, something that I had watched TV shows about, something so wonderful that I thought it could only happen in unreal worlds. But, apparently it was sitting under my fingertips all along.
"Pretty cool, huh?" Evan said, cocking an eyebrow, and smiling widely. Nick moved his wrist again, and the flames disappeared from the tips of his fingers without even leaving a mark on his skin.
"Holy shit," I gasped, "how did you do that?" I asked Nick quickly.
"Schooling. Lots and lots of fucking school," Nick sneered, his nose crinkling.
"Hey, the schooling isn't that bad. Besides, you room with Luke and I," Evan interjected.
"Exactly. Reason number one why the schooling is so fucking terrible," Nick sneered, a sly smile crossing his face.
"Hey!" Evan exclaimed, hitting Nick on the shoulder of his broken arm.
"Ow!" Nick exclaimed, his other hand flying up to protect his broken arm from further damage.
"Sorry, dude. Karma's a bitch, man," Evan laughed. I laughed slightly at the two boys' interaction. It's like they knew each other inside and out, and knew exactly what to say to each other to either cheer the other one up or piss them off completely.
"Haha," Nick fake laughed, still wearing a grimace on his face.
I was about to interject into the conversation but someone beat me to it.
"Nick?" a female voice echoed through the room. A head popped through the doorway and then a girl stepped into the room.
The girl had jet black shoulder length hair, light brown eyes that sparkled with joy when they laid themselves on Nick. She was wearing a purple dress and white laced high heeled boots.
"Hey, Kate," Nick answered. I didn't know if I was losing my mind or not, but I thought I heard a hint of annoyance in the boy's usual happy voice.
"Oh my god! I heard you were hurt, but they wouldn't let me in! How are you?" Kate asked vigorously, in a tone that I could recognize immediately. It was the tone that I used when I had a crush on Dean, before we had started dating. Poor girl, she obviously had a crush on Nick, and he was just oblivious.
"I'm okay now," Nick replied.
"That's so good! I was so worried!" Kate exclaimed.
I looked to see Evan looking at her covered arm guiltily.
"Hey, what's wrong?" I asked Evan, making him jump as I broke him out of his trance.
"Uhh, it's nothing," he replied, "just a little dazed," he added, obviously lying. I wanted to say something about his obvious lie, but I decided against it. Besides, I barely knew him, why would I try and push him as if I were one of his best friends.
Speaking of best friends, I started wondering what Kris and Lewis were doing. Had they figured out I was missing yet? Were they looking for me? Hopefully they weren't. I was already starting to like it here. Being here made me feel like I had filled a hole in my life that I didn't even know existed until five minutes ago.
Kate was making doe eyes at Nick, and she was about to say something to him, when she got interrupted by someone.
"Nicholas!" a female voice exclaimed, running through the door. The loud sound of high heels echoed through the room, as a brunette girl ran up to hug Nick.
"Hey, Lauren," Nick said, through gritted teeth, "you're kinda crushing my arm," he grimaced.
"Oh, god! Sorry!" the girl I now knew as Lauren exclaimed, stepping away from Nick immediately, "are you hurt anywhere else? Does it hurt? Nick, I swear to god if you ever-" Lauren started.
"I'm okay, little sis. Calm down," Nick laughed embarrassedly.
"You're literally only three minutes older than me," Lauren answered, eyes narrowing at her slightly older brother.
"Best three minutes of my life," Nick replied.
"Shut up or I'll break your other arm," Lauren answered, laughing at her brother. Lauren turned to Kate, who was staring at the two siblings. "And you are?" Lauren asked, directed at Kate.
"Are you serious?" Kate responded, hostility coating her voice.
"This is Kate," Nick answered for her, "she was in our initiation group, Lauren," he added.
"Oh, you're Katherine," Lauren replied, scrunching her nose in disgust, she gave Nick a side eye, and I saw understanding cross across Evan's features as well.
"I knew I had seen you before!" Evan exclaimed.
"Wow, so none of you remembered me but Nick," Kate said, "obviously I'm not appreciated here," Kate added, turning and walking away angrily.
"Sorry!" Lauren and Evan exclaimed in unison.
"Katherine," Lauren sneered, "when are you going to tell her to fuck off?" Lauren asked Nick.
"I'm not mean spirited like you, Lauren. I'm trying to let her down slowly, but I don't think she gets it," Nick answered.
"Well, obviously," Lauren said.
"She's just as obsessed with you as she was five years ago," Evan interjected. Lauren looked to Evan, and her attention and worry turned to him immediately.
"Are you okay, Evan? You look a little banged up," Lauren stated, cupping her hand on his cheek. I felt anger overwhelm me when she did that, I wasn't sure why, but it made the suspicion of Lauren being Evan's girlfriend come over me again.
"I'm okay," Evan answered, taking Lauren's hand away from his cheek.
"That's good," Lauren replied, smiling at him. Lauren then turned to look at me. "No offense or anything but who are you?" Lauren asked me.
"Gabriella Stone. And you?" I replied.
"Lauren Westfield," she answered, "it's nice to meet you Gabriella," she added.
"Likewise," I replied, hostility coating my voice.
"What's her problem?" Lauren whispered to Nick, just loud enough for me to hear. Nick just shrugged, the best he could with his broken arm. "Well, we should go and check in with our parents," Lauren said. Nick nodded, and they both walked out of the room.
I leaned against the wall in an irritated manner.
"What's wrong with you?" Evan asked me. "Do you not like Lauren?" he questioned.
I just groaned and rolled my eyes.
"What's your problem with Lauren?" he asked, "she's very nice. She's one of my favorite people," he added, making the situation much worse.
"Are you guys like a thing?" I asked hastily.
"Lauren and I? What? Eww," Evan replied, scrunching his nose up. I felt as if a weight had been lifted off of me, and I wasn't completely sure why. "Lauren's like a sister to me. I've known her for my entire life. She's always been there for me, and she's annoyingly always worried about me, as well. She's always going to be like a sister to me," he explained. I just nodded, feeling my cheeks flush in embarrassment.
"Oh," I answered, finally. We stood in an awkward silence, and I watched as his one green eye shifted around the room uncomfortably. "So, what was Nick saying about lots of schooling to get your powers?" I asked, breaking the silence.
"Get comfortable, because I'm about to blow your mind," Evan gasped humorously, gesturing for me to sit down on the hospital bed. I sat down on the bed, and he took a seat on the chair beside the bed. He then started his story, which was about to change my entire life.
