During the year 2026, werewolf packs came out of hiding and war broke out between wolves and humans. Hundreds died before the werewolves finally won the war.

States because territories for wolf packs and humans because citizens of that pack. Areas were created with sheriffs being warrior wolves who had control over their Areas and answered to an alpha of the state. Government positions and other high rank positions were given to werewolves. Alphas of every state answered to the king of the United states werewolves who took the position of president. Humans could do nothing but stand aside. Rebellion ended with death or sent to rehabilitation camps. Crime dropped dramatically as death was the result for drug dealers, murders and other crimes.

Schools were transformed to teach werewolf history including how the moon goddess created mates. It was taught to human children how lucky they would be to have a werewolf mate. By 2058, it was rare for any human to rebel the Werewolf reign.

Rare but not completely unheard of.

Adrian

Future Alpha,18-year-old Adrian Till of the Timber Wolves pack, was going through papers in his father's office about new housing that was being prepared for new mated pairs as well as planning the North Dakota Mates Ball. Every year a huge mate ball was held in each state. It would bring citizens in the state from age 18 to 36 who were looking for their mate. Those who were 37 or older were not required to go to the state ball.

The mates' ball was considered the biggest event of the year. In North Dakota, the mates' ball was hosted in May. Every state held their version of the mates' ball at different times of the year. They could also invite other alphas to send unmated members to their balls in the chance that one of the members would be a mate to one of their own people. It took a lot of work to plan for the soon to be alpha. Adrien had to plan food and entertainment as well as housing for those who were coming from different parts of the state where it was too far to travel back too in one day and out of state visitors.

Those who were over the age of 37 without a mate were able to have a second chance to find a mate. The US Mates Ball were given the opportunity to meet others who did not have a mate from all over the country and even from outside the country of their origin. It was held twice a year. The summer mates ball occurred during June and the winter mates ball occurred during December. It was far grander than what the state packs planned for their youth.

For Adrian, Alpha Jasper had started teaching his son how to run a pack since he was 16. Alpha Jasper wanted Adrian to be able to step in at a moment's notice if something occurred in their pack. He was slowly allowing Adrian to take over parts of the alpha's job to give him experience for the future. Planning the North Dakota's Mates Ball would be the first task Adrian would be solely responsible for without his father's supervision or guidance. This would be a big test to see if Adrian was ready for more responsibilities.

RING RING RING

Adrian glanced up as his father's phone rang. Alpha Jasper glanced at the caller ID in confusion before answering.

"Hello Alpha Ray. What can I do for you? I hope you are not trying to back out of being a chaperone to our Mate Ball this year. Every Alpha should experience the crazy antics of hundreds of highly emotional youth trying to find their mate." Alpha Jasper joked with his fellow friend.

Adrian snickered at his dad. Alpha Ray Stone was a good friend and brother-in-law to Alpha Jasper. He hated social events like these with a passion. It was pure luck he met his mate a week before the Arkansas mating ball when he met Alpha Jasper's 16-year-old sister, Jasmine. Ray was so happy to get out of going he threw a private party with his close friends including Jasper.

Ray sighed. "I wish this was a social call but I need your help Jasper."

Alpha Jasper tensed in confusion. "What's going on, Ray?"

"Three of the female humans in my sector have ran off. Two would have been at the mating ball this year and one just turned 15-years-old three weeks ago. I believe the 15-year-old was coerced or forced to run with her cousins." Ray said in anger.

Jasper growled in frustration. "How are you sure the 15-year-old was coerced by her cousins? What's her name?"

"Her name is Jessie Hale and she has a perfect record. She never missed a day of school. Never had a discipline record with the school or with the sheriff in her area. She had positive reports from teachers. I'm not sure where this rebellion is coming from? It's so unlike her according to the werewolf sheriff in her area. Her cousins however have a rap sheet a mile long. Vivian Walter and Renee Cook are trouble with a 10-foot pole. Being defiant to teachers and werewolf warriors. Not following curfew. Vandalism. The list goes on. I pity their mates as they will have trouble controlling these two." Alpha Ralph said in anger.

Alpha Jasper frowned. "It is possible. You think they are heading to Canada?"

"Yes. They had a 3-day head start. The parents thought they were on a weekend pack youth retreat for the whole weekend while the school thought the 3 had a stomach bug. The truth came out when they failed to show up to classes on Monday. We were able to track them to the border. We believe they stowed away on a train in Alpha Sébastien's territory in Mississippi. The train passed through Silver Stream pack in Kansas and Red Moon pack in Nebraska without stopping. Two of the trains human caretakers was arrested for assisting them to escape. The girls made it to Alpha Axe's territory in South Dakota and he confirms the older cousins stole a four-wheeler and two containers of gas from a family 2 nights days ago and should be in your territory of North Dakota. " Ray grumbled.

"I remember getting a report this morning of an abandoned four-wheeler. That might be them. Jessie wasn't there when they stole the vehicle, correct?" Jasper asked in shock.

Alpha Ray sighed. "No. We are not sure where she was during this time. I'm praying to the moon goddess she was not hurt or killed during this foolish crusade."

"I will alert my warriors to keep an eye out for them. We will catch them before they reach the border especially if they are on foot. Have the other Alphas been alerted?" Jasper said making a note on a piece of paper.

"Yes. Everyone is on high alert. Thank you for your help my friend. I will send you an email with their pictures to show your people. We have got to find them." Said Alpha Ray

"Your welcome. Get some rest, Ray. We'll find them." Jasper said hanging up the phone.

"Why would they run to Canada, dad? The packs there would just send them back." Adrian asked in confusion.

Jasper sighed. "They probably think it's still free human territory. The Canadian Alaskan king has not made waves as much as the USA, Europeans and South American kings have when they took over. His takeover was less bloody than ours or the other countries. We will catch them before they get that far."

Adrian shook his head. What foolish humans.

Jessie

Jessie sighed as she wrapped her blanket around her shoulders. North Dakota weather was so cold during April. She could see her breath when she breathed out. It was exhausting from running on limited food and rest just to make it to the Canadian border. Across the border was free land that werewolves had not taken over yet according to the older men from their town. The girls would be free if only they could cross the border.

Across from Jessie was her two cousins, Renee and Vivian. The two women snuggled together trying to keep warm while planning their next steps. According to them, everything was going to plan but Jessie was not so sure. They had hardly any food left after Vivian slipped in a creek losing some of the food. They were filthy with dirt and sweat covering them from moving through forests and crossing different water sources. They looked like a mess.

Jessie snuggled in the blanket as a gust of wind passed over them bringing chilling wind. She should have stayed at home but fear of the future was worth it. Vivian and Renee had told her the horror of being a mate. They had shown Jessie pictures they swore were from the rehabilitation center about the horrors that came from being there. Humans could be sent to the rehabilitation center for many things but one was not listening or following your mate. It terrified the girl.

"We have to cross the river. We have no choice." Vivian said in anger.

"The raft might not make it. It's flowing too fast." Renee huffed.

"It doesn't matter. We are too close. We can't give up now." Vivian huffed before standing up and grabbing her bags. "Get up. We need to move."

"Can't we wait until daylight?" Jessie asked in exhaustion.

"Absolutely not. We need to cross the river before sunrise. Now get up." Vivian glared at the younger girl.

Jessie slowly stood and pulled her backpack on before wrapping the blanket around her. Hopefully it would help with the cold.

Renee glared at Vivian before she also stood grumbling at the girl.

All three froze when they heard it. The one sound that terrified all humans.

AWHOOOOOOO

They turned toward the sound when two more howls were heard.

"RUN" Vivian said in panic.

The three girls ran through the woods and broke out to see the river before them. They ran toward the water when they heard the sound of something behind them.

Glancing back showed a wolf coming out of the woods.

"HURRY! RUN!" Vivian screamed in fear.

The three made it a steep cliff that led to the river. The climb down would take at least 10 minutes. 10 minutes they did not have and the raft was not blown up for them to use.

Vivian glanced at the wolf before grabbing Jessie by her backpack.

"Vivian?" Jessie said in confusion.

"Sorry cousin but I'm not going back." Vivian said with a hard look before tossing her cousin in the water.

"AAAAHHHHHH!" Jessie screamed as she fell down into the water.

Jessie was jerked and tossed around. She struggled to get to the surface from the water.

Black dots slowly started to appear as Jessie's movements slowed down as she couldn't get to the surface.

Suddenly something wrapped around Jessie's stomach pulling her up but Jessie hardly noticed as the world around her went dark as she lost consciousness.

.

.

.

"Breath, human. You have to breath." A voice said.

Jessie felt something push against her chest. Suddenly something was coming up her throat and she started choking. Whoever was there flipped her to her side and started hitting his palm on her back.

Water started coming out of Jessie's mouth. Her body was shivering as the cold air seemed to slice through her body. Opening her eyes, Jessie saw a werewolf kneeling beside her patting his hand on her back as if she was a baby who needed to be burped.

"Take it easy human. Help is on it's way." He said with a frown watching as the human's lips were turning blue.

The wolf glanced over as another wolf showed up with a blue jeep Wrangler. "Alex, I came as quickly as possible. How is the human?"

Alex lifted the human in his arms and moving toward the jeep. "Going into hypothermia, Seth. Her cousin threw her in to stop me from capturing them."

Seth handed Alex a blanket which was wrapped around Jessie. The younger wolf went and grabbed Jessie's backpack before hoping in.

"I'll take the direct route to the packhouse. Healers are waiting." Seth said with a look at the human.

"What about the other two?" Alex snarled.

Seth laughed. "Captured by Beta Lester and his warriors. They put up a fight but were easy taken down. They are taking the long way back to the packhouse. I'm sure it will be a good long walk for those two."

Alex smirked. "Good. They deserve to walk in the cold for what they did to their cousin."

Seth drove the two back to the pack house where healers collected the human who was shaking from the cold.

Jasper shook Alex's hand before following the healers to check on the human. It was going to be a long day for the Alpha.
