Day Two, Prompt: Thermometer/Delirium

Shadow and Sonic find themselves trapped in a reactor. Shadow can take the heat however his counterpart on the other hand can't.

Shadow hated nothing more than being placed to work alongside Sonic for a mission. Damn G.U.N for doing so.

He would've preferred to have gone with Rouge. As much as he wanted to put her at arm's length, he's come to appreciate her presence. He can almost go as far as seeing her as a close friend. She understands him in ways no one else has been able to grasp onto. He would've had no issue being partnered up with her.

However the Commander had other plans, instead he made sure it was in fact Sonic who he would join alongside with. As much as he protested, the chief's word was final and there was no changing his mind once it had been made up.

Shadow sneered at frustration and annoyance. Of all the agents it just had to be Sonic who in fact is not an agent. Ugh, he really despised and questioned many decisions made by the Commander.

He wouldn't even have been upset if he had been partnered with Omega. At least for the friendly robot they had mildly interesting things to converse about. Sonic on the other hand, he can only take so much of his talking.

The Commander had assigned Sonic and Shadow to investigate an abandoned Eggman base that had been discovered over at South Island. The duo were chosen together based on the fact they can get there pretty quickly without having to lean on transportation. Shadow understood that choice however it doesn't mean that he has to like it.

The day of the mission Shadow had already found himself on the island outside the base, waiting for Sonic. How in the world that Hedgehog can be late is beyond his comprehension but he simply waited until a burst of wind nearly knocked him to his bottom.

"Heya, sorry about being late. I thought we would meet a lot later." Sonic said, sounding genuinely apologetic.

Shadow huffed, "Whatever. You're here and that's all that matters. Let's go."

"Alright! Wanna race there?"

"It's a minute walk hedgehog, we can walk."

Sonic frowned. Sure maybe it was close but some fun during the mission wouldn't hurt, "-Ugh- fine."

The duo made their way over to the base. Upon arrival, it clearly hadn't been used in some time. It was vastly overgrown and it seemed like it was slowly falling apart. Eggman clearly left this place to rot. It was safe to assume this place had been abandoned years ago.

"I thought this was a recent Eggman base we found? What are we going to find here?"

Shadow seemingly annoyed at the question, "Anything faker, Anything."

Shadow walked ahead leaving Sonic behind, confused. The duo made their way into the only entrance which was a wall of the steel framing that had fallen some time ago that led inside. The vines and vast majority of vegetation made it hard to navigate but eventually they were able to make it inside.

The base was awfully eerie. There was a great amount of moisture inside that made it feel humid within the metal frame. There were some wet spots across the halls clearly from when the rain had entered the cracks of the crumbling structure.

"Hey Shads, so what exactly are we looking for? Yea anything of course yatta yatta but what exactly am I supposed to keep an eye out for."

Shadow rolled his eyes. Valid question however it doesn't cease to annoy him every time the blue one opens his mouth. Chaos, how he hated his voice. "The Commander pretty much said that anything we can use to find out about his future plans. He might've left some tech behind unknowingly so maybe we could use that to our advantage."

Sonic's mouth twisted, "I see where you and the big guy are coming from but let's be serious here? This place is years old. I mean, are we really going to find anything useful here? Even if Egghead did leave some tech behind, don't you think it would've been ruined by all the rain and mildew?"

"Maybe, but it's worth taking a look around."

They walked around briefly around the halls. The two began becoming increasingly annoyed as the halls would bifurcate into more halls and that into more. Eventually, Sonic's patience ran terribly thin.

"Okay this is taking a lot longer than I would've liked so how about you take one hall and I'll take another? Deal?"

Sonic was right, this was taking too damn long. Shadow simply nodded and parted ways.

Shadow's end bore nothing. Everything had been cleared out. The doctor clearly made sure that there was nothing left behind that could be used against him. Everything was clean. Every other room either contained some dead animal remains who found themselves with misfortune as they couldn't find themselves out or simply puddles of water and foliage that had grown from the moisture. Almost all the walls were covered in a layer of mold.

On Sonic's side of things, everything was alike. The mold made him cough some but it wasn't anything he couldn't handle. Eventually, he concluded that he was in fact lost. Why there were so many hallways to begin with was beyond him. After what he thinks is about half an hour that had passed, he found himself face to face with Shadow.

"Dude, this place is like a maze. There's no way we're gonna be able to explore this entire place. Speaking of which I found literally nothing. You?"

Shadow's brows furrowed and his fingers found themselves between them in frustration. "Negative. However, I found something that might be worth taking a look at."

Sonic shrugged and simply followed Shadow. They found themselves in a very open space with a suspiciously large round dome in the center of it. There was a lock preventing its entrance.

"I got this," Sonic rubbed beneath his nose before forming a powerful spindash that eventually forced the door open, breaking it off its hinges.

Sonic gave a slight smirk at Shadow's way however he couldn't care less about how the door was opened.

Entering, there was a series of questionable instruments and controls inside. Somehow there seems to be electricity still running through the place as the buttons still glowed despite its long period of neglect.

Sonic enthusiastically began messing around with all the buttons and controls. Shadow turned back at him, frustrated, "Faker stop pressing the damn buttons we don't know what they do."

Sonic snickered, "Relax. They're old, there's no way any of this works."

However, one particular button suddenly closed off the entrance to the space with a loud slam. The dome began letting out steam from above and it began flashing red.

"I stand corrected."

"What did I tell you?!" Shadow made his way to the wall of buttons and controls. There were too many to tell which did what. He was afraid if he pressed the wrong button things could get worse.

Sonic walked out of the dome into the space to find all entrances closed off, "We're trapped. There's no way out."

Shadow punched the wall next to him with a grunt of bitterness and walked out simply to confirm what Sonic was saying was true, "Stupid hedgehog, if you would've listened to me we wouldn't be stuck here."

Sonic scoffed, "Look can you blame me? This place is so rundown I didn't think anything would actually work let alone keep us trapped here. Step away, I got this."

Attempting to do what he had done earlier, Sonic began to form a spin dash, one more powerful than the previous trying to break open the corridor that kept the two trapped in this humid room. Suddenly he felt hot, like the place was suddenly warming up at an increasingly fast rate. He stopped.

Sonic's hands are on his knees and he's huffing. When did he become so tired? He starts feeling sweaty all over. He wipes an arm across his forehead, confused.

"Move out of the way, let me do it."

Shadow proceeds to do what Sonic was doing only moments earlier, however, also tries to kick and punch the corridor with everything he had. Sonic walked into the dome and felt a wave of heat hit his face. He felt that he must be going insane because Shadow looked perfectly fine yet he felt like he was about to pass out right then and there.

He's dizzy and grasps onto the wall next to him, leaning on it. His fur feels sticky and wet and he feels drops of sweat sliding down the sides of his temples. His gaze finds the wall filled with different colored buttons and instruments. It's when his eyes scan upward do they fix on a thermometer at the top. Eyeing it closely he realizes, the temperature is rising at an alarming rate. So he wasn't going insane.

Meanwhile, Shadow's had very little luck only managing to leave a dent. He finds himself also huffing and when he feels a droplet of sweat travel down his temple does his face twist in bafflement.

He's the ultimate lifeform, this type of weary shouldn't be leaving him physically strained. The room feels awfully warm however the change isn't drastic enough to notice. He notices a hint of blue at the corner of his eye coming out of the reactor.

"Dammit Faker, now we're going to have to call for backup for your inability to listen to-"

Sonic isn't really listening he realizes as his ears are folded back against his head, But no, no that's not what grabs his attention. When Sonic slams his back against the wall and slides down to a crouch does he realize something was terribly wrong.

He stares for a second. His rival is breathing fast and heavy. His eyes are half-closed and unfocused.

He walks over to him, kneeling at his level with a hand at his shoulder, "Faker. Faker snapped out of it."

Sonic gasps and he pulls back feeling his mit wet with Sonic's sweat. Emerald eyes find saturated Red ones. He swallows hard, "H-hey ah, Shads, don't you think it's gotten quite hot in here?"

Shadow feels another bead of sweat tumble down the side of his face. He briefly ignores Sonic and walks inside the reactor and too feels the wave of intense heat hit his face. A slight beeping uptop makes his eyes move to find that same thermometer hitting dangerous levels of blistering hot heat. Then it clicked.

His body was created to take on immense amounts of temperature changes that are below freezing or above the boiling point for long periods of time. However, Sonic's anatomy isn't like his so he's feeling the effects much faster and harsher.

Shadow walks out finding Sonic no longer sitting but lying on his side. He panics as he grasps onto his shoulder once more and shakes Sonic awake with only slight whimpers falling out of his mouth.

"No, no no no no not here. Not here Sonic come on. We have to get out of here."

He's not sure if the blue one hears him as all he's doing is lolling his head around in great discomfort. He's obviously delirious and his slim body shakes as if he were cold.

Shadow looks up and around. There was nothing he could use to pry open the steel door. Pushing any more buttons to achieve a successful result was risky. G.U.N be damned. By the time they got here, it would probably be too late. He really wasn't sure what to do. All he knew was that he needed to get Sonic out of here.

Shadow felt that he had no other choice but to attempt to break down that same door both he and Sonic attempted to earlier. He sits Sonic up before unlocking one of his inhibitor rings, feeling a burst of energy flowing through his body. He slams against the door over and over again for what seems like forever until finally, he's able to burst a hole wide enough for the both of them.

He quickly puts back on the ring on his wrist and feels that energy stabilize itself. He feels exhausted, he's definitely going to regret taking off his ring later.

The room has definitely gotten much hotter and he's sweating all over too. Shadow goes back for Sonic, carrying his rival bridal style before he's off. He jumps through the hole he's just made and he skates his way down the hallways they had explored before. He thinks he knows his way out as with his impeccable memory.

Finally, he sees their exit and jumps over all the vegetation. He doesn't stop. He's skating his way to a nearby decent-sized lake he saw earlier. Sonic felt like dead weight and he began to grow increasingly worried when the heat that remained in his body was not departing.

Upon his arrival, he sets a passed-out Sonic on the grass and begins splashing cold water onto his face and down across his body. He's awfully hot to the touch and most likely would develop a fever later on however the one thing he needed to do right now, is get Sonic's temperature down at a less worrisome rate.

Suddenly, he hears a loud blast behind him. He sees parts and debris from the base fly above the trees and smoke imitating. It seems that the immense amount of pressure and heat within the reactor caused it to blow. Shadow lets out a shaky breath, they had just gotten out in time.

Thank Chaos.

His body feels heavy and his head is throbbing terribly. He wants to sleep once more however his mind is also too awake to do so, so he decides against his better judgment and peels his eyes open.

His eyes find the ceiling of his bedroom. He doesn't feel hot anymore and he feels something damp against his forehead. A gloved mit finds a rag that had been placed there and removes it to inspect it. He sits up and although his memory is somewhat foggy, he recalls passing out to his body feeling like it was being baked in an oven however he feels cold now.

Sonic assumes Shadow got him out of there before he probably would've become a baked hedgehog. He sets the rag aside near a bowl of water that has long gone lukewarm. He finds a note slipped under it and he moves the bowl aside to scan it.

It read, "You almost got us killed Stupid, Call if you need anything, (XXX-XXX-XXXX)"

Sonic smiled at that.

Took me too darn long to come up with a scenario for this. Anyway, college has just been so busy. Ugh, anyway I hope you enjoyed it. I apologize for any misspellings I did not catch before publishing.
