Pedal Patrol
A.N. This story has been in my head for a while now, but I've never gotten around to it, due to complications surrounding what sort of pedal-powered machinery the pups get in this story. But, as you can see, I managed to overcome that obstacle (with some help from BigMoose01, of course), and now, the story is here. We all know why we're here, so let's get down to it.
One day, the PAW Patrol were in the lobby of the Lookout discussing something they had seen on TV recently.
"Man, that episode was muy bien." said Tracker. "I'm very glad Ryder got those DVDs of the old Transformers cartoon from the Eighties for us to watch, and even the movie that came out with it."
"You said it, my little Chihauha buddy." agreed Chase. "And I think it's nice that the Autobots finally have a Combiner team of their own now."
"You know, I can relate to Silverbolt in a way." said Marshall. "Since I used to be scared of heights myself."
"Say, that reminds me." Skye put in. "I find it odd for someone who transforms into a plane to be scared of heights."
"Good thing Optimus made Silverbolt the leader of the Aerialbots to help him combat his fear." added Rocky.
Just then, Chase remembered something.
"Has anyone had any thought of what that surprise Ryder mentioned earlier could be while we were watching it?" he asked.
"I hope it's that my family from Builder Cove will be coming over for dinner." said Rubble.
"Same with Cousin Coral." continued Skye.
"Or better yet, I hope it's that we'll be having a new pup joining the team." finished Marshall.
"Well, whatever the surprise is, I'm sure we'll find out soon." said Zuma.
At that moment, Ryder came into the room.
"Okay, pups, your surprise is ready." he said. "Are you all ready to see it?"
"Yes, please!" the pups grinned.
Ryder laughed with amusement.
"Then follow me." he said.
Ryder then took the pups outside the Lookout, where they found their rigs all lined up in a row. It should go without saying the pups were confused at this sight.
"All due respect, Ryder, but that's just our rigs." said Chase.
"You're not wrong." said Ryder. "But why not take a closer look?"
The pups did so, and found a green button on the dashboard of each of their rigs that had a picture of bicycle pedals on it. They eached pressed the buttons, and watched with amazement as their rigs began to change appearance. The cabs extended to allow a set of bicycle pedals to appear in front of the driver's seats, which moved backward. This was followed by the backrests of the seats become somewhat taller, and the steering levers were extended towards the seats. In addition, the back of Rubble's rig folded downward to include a crane that had pedals at the base of it. Thus was also the case with the backs of Chase's rig and Marshall's rig, each of which folded to reveal a second seat and set of levers and pedals, along with a control unit. In addition, the propellers on Zuma's rig had turned into a pair of paddle wheels, and the bumper at the bottom retracted completely, as did the sides of the cab, which lowered to expose the pedals. These transformations made the pups' eyes and jaws drop open.
"Okay, I did not see that coming!" said Rocky.
Ryder smiled.
"Surprise!" he said. "I made some new upgrades to your rigs to incorporate pedal power into them. You know, like on a bicycle."
"Awesome!" said Skye. "What a way to get a workout when out on missions."
"Say, Ryder, would you mind telling us what our new upgrades actually do?" asked Chase.
"I thought you'd never ask." agreed Ryder. "For the most part, you can now pedal all your vehicles to get to emergencies. In addition, some of you can use pedal power to work other components of your vehicles. For example, Chase, you can pedal to reel in your winch. Give it a try."
"Okay." nodded Chase.
Chase barked the command to activate his winch, which he then launched a short distance. Then, he began pedaling backwards to reel it in.
"Hey, it works!" the Police Pup grinned.
Next, Ryder spoke about Marshall's rig.
"Marshall, the pedals on the back of your rig can be used on both your ladder and your hose reel." he said. "But you can't operate them both at once. That control panel can help you switch between the two."
Marshall nodded, and he proceeded to try out his new pedal-powered ladder and hose reel, both of which worked like a charm. The next to try out their new upgrade was Skye, who proceeded to pedal a few laps around the top of the Lookout in her new pedal-powered helicopter. Next up was Rocky, whose vehicle now included a pedal-powered trash compactor, which he used to crush a bunch of empty soda cans and form them into a neat cube. After Rocky was Rubble, who demonstrated his new pedal-powered crane by raising the cube Rocky had just created, turning the crane around, and then setting the cube back on the ground.
"Man, oh man, these are some neat upgrades!" grinned Rubble.
"My turn!" said Zuma.
Zuma went over to his rig and was just about to jump in when Ryder stopped him.
"Hold it, Zuma." he said. "I want to save your rig's new abilities for last, if that's okay, since yours works best on water."
"Oh, right." said Zuma with a laugh. "Silly me."
Ryder then turned his face to Everest.
"Why don't you try out yours instead?" he suggested.
Everest agreed, and soon, the pups were watching Everest work her snowcat's snowblower by pedaling. Next up was Tracker, who found that Ryder had upgraded his rig so that he could pedal to make it go faster.
"Arriba!" Tracker grinned as he pedaled.
After Tracker finished his demonstration, Ryder spoke up again.
"I actually added this feature to all your vehicles so that the faster you pedal, the faster you go." he said. "And, by the way, the pedals use a gear system so it's easier to pedal, just like on a bicycle."
"Neato!" grinned Marshall. "But how do we slow down?"
"It's simple." Ryder replied. "There's a third lever you can pull on to apply the brakes."
"That sounds easy enough." said Rocky.
"Say, what about you, Ryder?" Rubble asked. "Did you make an upgrade like this to your vehicle too?"
"I did, actually." Ryder nodded. "I'll be right back."
Ryder then left, and soon returned with his ATV, which had slimmed down quite a lot. The footrests and had retracted to make room for another set of pedals just like on the pups' vehicles, and the chassis had grown narrower.
"I upgraded my ATV so it can turn into a quadricycle." he said. "And believe it or not, I did something similar to your vehicles."
It was at that moment that Chase found two more buttons besides the pedals icon button; a purple one with the word "Play" on it and an orange one printed with the word "Work", the latter of which was illuminated. Chase pressed the purple button and watched-and felt-as his police cruiser became smaller in size and more simple in terms of construction, its chassis assuming a form loosely based on that of a 50s-era Chevrolet Belair and the tires taking the form of whitewall tires. The only thing that stayed constant was the vehicle retaining its blue paint job and the number "02".
"No way..." he gasped. "My own pedal car?! Wow!"
The rest of the pups did the same as Chase, and watched as the chassis of most of their vehicles went through the same transformation phase as Chase's cruiser. All, that is, except Zuma's vehicle, whose chassis took on the form of a speedboat, and Rubble's vehicle, whose chassis took on the form of a dump truck. Marshall's vehicle also included a working bell.
"Boy, I can really get used to this!" Marshall grinned as he pulled the cord that rang the bell.
"Can I try out my new upgrade now?" asked Zuma.
"Sure, Zuma." Ryder nodded. "Alright, pups, to the beach!"
With that, Ryder and the pups all got on their respective vehicles and, after Ryder put on his helmet, the whole group pedalded their way to the beach. When they arrived, Zuma pressed the "Work" button on his vehicle dashboard and made his vehicle transform back into the "pedal boat" configuration of his hovercraft, then pushed it into the water. He then jumped into the driver's seat and it wasn't long before he was pedaling away on the water.
"Wahoo!" he cheered. "Cowabunga, dudes!"
After a bit, Zuma returned to shore, and the PAW Patrol returned to the Lookout. While Ryder went inside, the pups had some more fun pedaling around in their new pedal cars.
"Oh, boy, this is fun!" said Rubble. "It's like we're riding bikes, only with four wheels!"
Just then, Rocky had an idea.
"Hey, let's have a race!" he suggested. "From here to the Pup Park!"
"Good idea, Rocky." said Chase. "Everyone line up!"
With that, all the pups lined their pedal cars up in a row.
"First one to the Pup Park wins, okay?" Chase offered. "On your marks...get set...pedal!"
With that, the pups took off, paws pumping and pedals cranking. They soon reached the Pup Park, with Zuma in the lead, followed by Marshall in second place and Everest in third.
"Wow, second place." said Marshall. "Not bad. Good job, Zuma. You too, Everest."
"Thanks, Marshall." said Everest.
Back at the Lookout, Ryder was playing Transformers: Earth Wars on his Pup-Pad.
"Yes!" Ryder cried. "I finally have all five Protectobots unlocked! Now I can have them form Defensor!"
Just then, Ryder heard someone calling him on his Pup-Pad, and when he answered, he saw Jake.
"What's up, Jake?" Ryder asked.
"It's really bad this time." said Jake. "The cabin is on fire! Look!"
Jake turned his camera to show Ryder the former's cabin, which was engulfed in flames. That in itself was enough to convince Ryder of the gravity of the situation.
"Don't say anything more, Jake!" Ryder said. "We're on our way! No job is too big, no pup is too small!"
Ryder then pressed the alarm button on his Pup-Pad.
"PAW Patrol, to the Lookout!" he announced.
Back at the Pup Park, the pups were still having fun with their pedal cars when their Pup Tags went off.
"Ryder needs us!" they cried.
With that, they converted their pedal cars from "Play" mode to "Work" mode and pedaled madly back to the Lookout, and soon met up with Ryder in the observatory.
"PAW Patrol, ready for action, Ryder, sir!" Chase announced.
"Good." said Ryder. "It's a relatively simple but still serious one today, pups. Jake's cabin is on fire."
Everest gasped in horror when she heard this.
"Oh no!" she cried. "I hope Jake's okay!"
Ryder then began assigning the pups their tasks.
"Marshall, I'll need you to put out the fire." Ryder said.
"I'm fired up!" said Marshall.
"Chase, once Marshall puts out the fire, you will help him find out what caused it." continued Ryder.
"Chase is on the case!" nodded Chase.
"Everest, I know this one only calls for Marshall and Chase, but you can still come, anyway." finished Ryder. "That way, you can check on him."
"Ice or snow, I'm ready to go!" said Everest.
"Alright! PAW Patrol is on a roll!" Ryder declared.
And with that, Ryder, Chase, Marshall, and Everest took off.
"Okay, you three." said Ryder as they made it out to their vehicles. "How about we put your new pedal-powered machinery to the ultimate test here?"
"I'm all for that." agreed Chase as they all jumped into their rigs.
Soon, Ryder, Chase, Marshall, and Everest were furiously pedaling their vehicles to Jake's resort. They soon arrived and found Jake waiting outside.
"Jake!" Everest cried.
Everest jumped out of her snowcat and raced over to Jake, who embraced her.
"Jake, are you alright?" Everest asked.
Jake smiled.
"Yes, Everest, I'm fine." he said.
"Is there anyone inside?" Marshall interjected.
"Nope, it's just me." said Jake.
"Good." said Marshall. "Okay, ready or not, I'm going in hot!"
With that, Marshall made his way towards the entrance, but before he could reach it, a giant pile of snow fell from the roof of the cabin in front of it, blocking the Fire Pup's path.
"Uh-oh!" Marshall gasped. "That's not good!"
"Don't worry, Marshall." said Everest. "I'll clear your path."
Everest then jumped back into her snowcat and started pedaling again, using her snowblower to clear away the snow.
"Okay, Marshall, your path is clear." she said once she completed her task.
"Thanks, Everest." said Marshall, who then barked. "Water cannons!"
"Marshall, wait!" put in Chase. "Don't use your water cannons just yet. It might be an electrical fire. Electricty and water don't mix, remember?"
"Oh, right." agreed Marshall. "Jake, can you switch your power off for me?"
"Certainly." nodded Jake. "Good thing the breaker box is outside."
Jake went over to the breaker box and flipped the main switch. Once the power was off, Marshall went inside and sprayed his water cannons on the fire. In no time, the fire was out.
"All clear!" Marshall said once the last flame was extinguished and the smoke had cleared.
Once it was confirmed the cabin was safe to enter, Chase followed his Dalmatian comerade into the cabin. They soon came out with a charred electric blanket.
"This electric blanket is what caused the fire." Chase said.
Jake was dumbfounded.
"Strange." he said. "I've had that electric blanket since I was five, and it's never been a problem before."
"Well, you have to be careful with old ones, Jake." Ryder said. "Did you even check to see if the cord was intact before you plugged it in?"
Jake face-palmed at this.
"I did notice a little bit of wear and tear on the cord, but I didn't think anything of it." he sighed. "Boy, do I feel stupid."
Everest giggled.
"It's okay, Jake." she said. "Accidents happen."
"That's right." agreed Ryder. "And the important thing is that nobody's hurt."
"Thanks, Ryder." said Jake. "You and your pups really are the best."
"No problem, Jake." replied Ryder. "And remember, whenever you need us-."
"Give a yelp for help." laughed Jake. "Yeah, I know the drill."
"Alright, then." said Ryder. "Well, we better be going back to the Lookout now. See you later, Jake."
"You too, Ryder." replied Jake. "And pups."
"Bye, Jake!" said Everest as she and the others got back in their rigs.
Jake waved goodbye to Ryder and the pups as they left the resort and began making their way back to the Lookout. Later on, all the pups were getting ready to retire for the night.
"Man, I really love our new pedal-powered machines." said Marshall.
"Sí, yo también." agreed Tracker with a yawn. "I wonder what upgrades Ryder will give to our rigs next."
"Only time will tell, Tracker." said Chase. "In the meantime, goodnight, guys."
The pups all bid goodnight to each other and soon were dozing away, eagerly waiting whatever upgrade Ryder had in store for their vehicles next.
The End
