Girls' Days, Goats and Crime-fighting Dreams

Angie was up with the sun Saturday morning, dressed in her denim skirt and the new purple top Elizabeth had picked up the previous week. As she hopped down the final step and ran into the kitchen, she greeted Steve and DJ with a beaming smile.

"Are you all ready for your girls' day out?" Steve asked as he stepped up to kiss her cheek.

"Very very ready!" she announced. "You're gonna have so much fun at the batting cages with Uncle Danno and Grandpa and me and Mommy are gonna have so much fun with Grandma," she said as she bent to kiss Cammie's head.

"Do you want some juice?" Steve asked as he placed a glass in front of DJ.

"No thank you, I'm gonna get POG juice at the bakery," she said as she took the piece of mango her brother offered from his plate and popped it in her mouth.

"I'm gonna get a lemonade slushy after the batting cages," DJ said. "Michael's meeting us with his dad and we'll probably get puka dogs for lunch."

"It's gonna be so fun. Do good and hit all the pitches," Angie said and father and son shared a smile. Just as Steve took his seat and placed bowls of oatmeal on his placemat and DJ's, Catherine came into the kitchen from the garage. He noted his wife was also wearing a purple top with her jeans and smiled.

"Laundry's in. Just toss it in the dryer before you guys leave," She said and bent to ruffle Cammie's fur. "Have fun and take video for me and Grandma Ang." She turned to Angie. "Ready, baby girl?"

"I'm very very ready," she said. Sliding off the chair to hug her father and brother, she grinned up at Catherine. "Let's go, Mommy, I can't wait."

Offering her hand after kissing Steve and DJ goodbye, Catherine said, "Then let's go, I told Grandma we'd be there in ten minutes."

Who's ready for a fun-filled girls' day?" Elizabeth said in greeting as she climbed in beside Angie. Catherine grinned at being the 'chauffeur' as her mom chose to sit in the backseat with her daughter. "I hope you're both hungry because I've been waiting all morning for a malasada."

"Me, too, Grandma! And then we're going for mani-pedis, and a movie, and a big girl lunch!"

"And don't forget a stop at the mall afterwards," Elizabeth grinned at Catherine.

"How could we forget that?" her daughter smirked.

"We won't forget!" Angie announced, missing the teasing in her mother's voice. "First we get to have malasadas!"

As they walked into Leonard's bakery, the aroma of freshly baked treats filled the air. Catherine couldn't help but chuckle as Angie's eyes widened in their usual delight. "Mommy, the malasadas smell so yummy!" She exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement.

The owner greeted them with a wave. "Three of my favorite ladies, to what do I owe the pleasure?"

"It's girls' day, Mr. Lenny!" Angie told him. "I'm getting POG juice and a cinnamon malasada."

"We ordered online," Catherine told him after saying hello. "How's the family?"

"Can't complain, everyone's good and we're busy as ever," he replied with a grin. "I have to get the malasada mobile ready, you ladies enjoy."

The three of them indulged in the delicious treats, Angie making them laugh with a story of her latest visit to the zoo with Ashae and her parents.

After breakfast and a few texts with Steve to exchange a cinnamon-sugar faced Angie photo with one of DJ at bat, they made their way to the nail salon.

As they settled into the pedicure chairs, Elizabeth leaned over to Catherine and whispered, "Remember when you and Grandma Ang used to do each other's nails on her visits?"

Catherine whispered back, "I distinctly remember our 'abstract art' nail phase. They were very … unique."

"Mom was ahead of her time."

"What's that mean?" Angie asked, leaning forward to watch the nail technician paint her toes the same shade of purple as Catherine's.

"That means when I wanted to try a rainbow manicure, Grandma Ang took me to buy ten bottles of polish and we painted her nails to match," her mother explained.

"That's cause Grandma Ang is so much fun. Just like you, Grandma!"

Elizabeth reached out and squeezed the six year old's hand. "That's because I learned from the best, sweetheart."

Catherine smiled softly at her mom. "You certainly did. And you do her proud every day."

While the ladies finished up their mani-pedi session, Angie gushed about the upcoming movie. "Mommy, Grandma, I can't wait to see the movie. I love Paw Patrol. They're heroes like Daddy and catch bad guys like I'm gonna do when I'm grown up."

Catherine chuckled, "You're already a superhero, my brave girl. The bad guys better watch out when you join Daddy on the team."

After the movie, where they shared a popcorn to not spoil the 'big girl lunch', Duke's Waikiki awaited them, with its wonderful selection of seafood dishes.

They took their seats and two ladies at a neighboring table watched the little girl check the menu with her mother, finally choosing coconut shrimp and fries, while Catherine opted for the cheeseburger and Elizabeth ordered the crispy chicken BLT.

When the server stepped away, one of the women said, "Your daughter is adorable and the resemblance …" she waved a hand to indicate the three generations at the table, "is uncanny."

Angie, smiling ear to ear, happily proclaimed, "I look like Mommy and Grandma, but I have Daddy's same color eyes and chin-thing!" Her innocent pride made everyone around them smile when she pointed to the cleft.

"We're working on getting her to come out of her shell," Catherine told the ladies with a grin.

"I'm gonna be on Five-0 with my daddy when I grow up," Angie offered. "And have more dogs, cats and goats when I get my own house."

"What's Five-0?" The second woman inquired.

"The task force, they work for Governor Lea and catch all the bad guys."

"I'm sure you'll be the best crimefighter there is," Angie's new friend said, just as the server, Luke, arrived with her change. "You enjoy your lunch, sweetie, we're off to sightsee."

"If you wanna see a volcano, Kamekona has the best helicopter. It's pretty colors and it's got his face on it." Angie offered and the ladies chuckled. "If we decide to be adventurous, we'll keep that in mind." She grinned at Catherine and Elizabeth. "Thank you."

As they left, Angie beamed and sat up in her chair. "You're welcome!"

With lunch finished, the trio started on their last adventure of the day: shopping at Ala Moana Mall. Elizabeth led the way, ensuring they explored all the 'fun' stores. Angie, enthralled by the Disney section at Macy's, twirled in a circle, pretending to be a princess knight solving crimes in her magical kingdom.

Throughout their shopping spree, several more strangers commented on how much Catherine, Angie, and Elizabeth looked alike. Angie enthusiastically explained, "It's 'cause of DNA, I'm not sure what that is, but Uncle Max told me," making everyone chuckle.

They shopped for two new shirts for DJ, a dress and some princess socks for Angie and a few additional treats before the sun began to set and they made their way back home.

They dropped Elizabeth off and returned to the beach house, with Angie excited to share the day's adventure with her daddy. The moment she walked through the door, she found Steve sitting at the kitchen counter, engrossed in paperwork.

Catherine grinned and greeted him as he stood and lifted Angie into a hug. "Hey, you won't believe the day we had. How were the batting cages?"

Steve looked up, his eyes lighting at the sight of her. "Hey yourself. Michael invited DJ for a sleepover. They ran all afternoon, so that's gonna be an early night. We got home, grabbed his stuff and I dropped him off about an hour ago. What did my dynamic duo get up to today?"

Catherine leaned against the counter while Angie, her voice brimming with excitement said, "It was so fun, Daddy! We had malasadas at Leonard's, and I got cinnamon sugar ones and Mommy and Grandma got regular ones, then we got mani-pedis, and I got purple toes like Mommy and pink fingers like Grandma." She splayed her little hands out to prove her point. "Then we saw the Pound Puppies movie and shared popcorn and it was really good, and I had shrimp with coconut and yummy fries at Duke's, and then we shopped!" She took a breath.

"Ahhh Grandma in her natural habitat?"

Catherine chuckled. "And our firecracker gained a few new fans. A couple of people commented how much she looks like me and Mom, and you'll love this - your daughter told them how she's got your chin thing and eye color and how she's going to join Five-0 and capture all the bad guys. She even explained what the task force was to some tourists, right before she told them to call Kamekona if they wanted a tour."

"He's gonna have to start paying her to be his promo person," Steve laughed. "And I may actually have to add her to the team someday."

Catherine nudged him. "You better watch out, with your fearlessness and my problem solving skills..."

"I'll catch all the bad guys!" Angie said with a nod.

Steve grinned, "I'll make sure to train you like a SEAL." He kissed her head. "But didn't you text something about goats and pets earlier?" He placed Angie on her feet and she immediately took a seat on the floor next to Cammie.

Catherine leaned in conspiratorially, her voice dropping to a whisper. "When we were at Duke's, Angie went on her usual tangent about how she wants to have more pets when she grows up. She wants goats, dogs, cats, and who knows what else. She may end up with her own animal kingdom."

Steve burst into laughter. "Maybe she can train the goats to catch criminals."

Catherine barked a laugh of her own. "Ohh there you go, undercover goats on the task force. Danny will especially love that."

"Danny fed the goat love the minute he got her the lifelong sponsorship…"

As their laughter subsided, Catherine looked at him, her eyes becoming serious. "You know, I can't help but think how lucky she and DJ are to have you as their father. The world won't know what hit it when they grow up."

Steve reached out, taking Catherine's hand in his. "And they're even more lucky to have you as their mother."

Angie, her focus on the dog, said, "I made some new friends, today, Cammie. I told them about Five-0 ''cause they didn't know."

Catherine shook her head. "She's the perfect blend of us, and I can't wait to see the amazing woman she becomes, but on the other hand…"

"You want to keep her this little for as long as possible," Steve read her thoughts and they shared a soft smile until their daughter's voice broke the silence. "Daddy, I got Disney socks and a dress from the mall and we got shirts for DJ, too!"

Catherine bent to kiss her cheek "Okay, my princess knight, are you ready to have a little dinner?"

Angie nodded enthusiastically. "Yes! I'll help, but first I gotta pee."

"Go," Steve said with a grin. "Before you're the greatest detective the world has ever seen, you need to eat and help feed Cammie and Pumpkin."

"Okay! C'mon, Cammie, let's go find Pumpkin and after I pee we can eat. I'll tell you about the socks Grandma got me. They have all the princesses on them …" as her voice retreated while she crossed into the living room, Steve and Catherine shared a look.

"Watch out, bad guys," Catherine teased, before turning to place a soft kiss on Steve's lips. "Let's get this dinner started, Commander. She's had a long day and I predict an early bedtime."

"With some extra us time." He returned her smile. "Sounds like a plan."

Pecking his lips once more before turning towards the refrigerator, she beamed. "It definitely does."
