On the first anniversary of his father's death, Roman returns home after dinner with his siblings and walks straight into the bedroom. "Honey, I'm home," he calls.

Gerri is lying on the bed, scrolling through virtual paperwork. "Hi there." He lies down with his back to her and spoons up against her as she puts her iPad down.

"How were the dipshits?" she asks.

"Oh, you know. Ken's in one of his manic phases. Shiv's still hating motherhood. Connor's in denial about his wife having left him. I think I might actually be the most stable one."

"That is a horrifying thought." She wraps her arms around his waist. "Are you okay, really?"

"Yeah. It's just a date. Doesn't really mean anything. Not like he's not gone every other day."

"Yeah." She sighs, her breath warm against the back of his neck.

"I really wanted you to give me a hug that day, you know," he says. They've never really talked about that day.

"I know. I was just so furious with you, about everything."

"Yeah, I know."

"But also…" She brings up her hand to stroke his hair. "I kind of ached for you a little bit."

He smiles, although she can't see his face. "You did?"

"Yeah. So I had to keep my distance."

He rolls over so he's facing her, brushing the hair out of her eyes. "You love me."

"You mean you love me?"

"Nope. I meant what I said."

"Hmm." She cups his face. "I suppose you're not entirely repulsive."

"See? You love me. I wore you down."

What she says next takes his breath away. "Do you still want to get married?"

"What? I mean yes, of course. Are you fucking with me?"

"No." She shakes her head. "I thought it might be nice."

"Is this just because of today? Is this a pity proposal?"

"Roman." She gives him a withering look. "I've been thinking about it for a while."

"Okay then." He props himself up on his elbow, suddenly excited. "Let's get married."

"We'll have a prenup, obviously. You can get independent counsel."

"Cool it with the dirty talk. I don't care about that."

"Well, you should. I'm advising you to have one."

"Shut up." He kisses her full on the mouth. "You're killing the romance of the moment."

"Need I remind you of your first proposal?"

"No idea what you're talking about." He lies back so she can rest on his chest. "So we're actually doing this? We're getting married?"

"Just promise me no rockets at this wedding, okay?"

"Too soon, Ger."
