Previously, on Dragon Ball IJ:

After moving to a new island, it was time for Master Roshi to test his new students' fitness for his legendary training. After swapping out his shoes, Goku stunned his fellow students in a footrace.

Then the hunt was on for one rock in a forest. Krillin and Launch failed to snag the dinner prize by trickery, and Chichi failed to win it by cuteness. So in the end, Goku came out on top, being able to eat his fill with his new master.

But he shouldn't celebrate just yet, for today the true hard work begins!

Chapter 5

4:30 a.m.:

BRNNNGG!

Roshi reached up to the alarm clock hanging down from the ceiling on a string and sat up on the futon. Putting on his shades, he read the clockface as he turned the alarm off.

"Eh, morning already? Guess I have gotten a tad rusty. Krillin, Goku, up and at it! It's time for training," Roshi snapped, getting dressed. Krillin got up quicker as Goku scratched himself, and took a look at the clock as it swung a bit on its string.

"But Master, it's only 4:30," Krillin whined.

"If you're going be a crybaby, you can pack your bags boy, my training ain't for the faint of heart. Now, you've got fifteen minutes to wash up, use the toilet, and get dressed; I'll wake the girls," Roshi said.

"Woohoo, finally training!" Goku cheered, rushing to the toilet.

"Hmph, if not for that little girl and the blonde half, I could be sharing the bedroom with that cutie Lunch. Instead, here I am, stuck with this fool, and the monkey boy. Oh well Roshi, adversity is the path of the turtle, you should be used to it by now," he said, ascending the steps.

Reaching the bedroom, he knocked on the door three times.

"Hey you two, it's time!"

BANG BANG

Roshi trembled a bit as he rose from a perfect split to stand again.

"Blast it, Launch! If you put anymore holes in my property, you're either repairing them or paying for the repairs!" Roshi said.

"Oh, it's you, I thought only the fuzz knocked before sunrise," Launch said. He glimpsed her green eye looking through one of the bullet holes before she withdrew.

"You sleep with a gun?" Chichi asked, also out of sight behind the door.

"Of course I do. Dang, you really are a little girl, ain't ya?" Launch said.

"I'm not that little," Chichi whined on the other side of the door.

"Well, whatever you are, you have fifteen to get ready, we meet outside then to begin training," Roshi snapped.

"What about breakfast?" Launch asked.

"Don't be absurd, it's too early for breakfast," Roshi retorted.

"…Lunch will meet you outside, old man, this is not the day to get up before the freaking sun," Launch said.

Fifteen Minutes Later:

Lunch yawned and put her hands through her hair. She had changed for the day into a pair of black sweatpants with a white short-sleeved shirt. Chichi next to her was wearing khaki pants along with a blue dress with the character for her name on it. While Goku and Krillin wore dark pants and white shirts.

Roshi looked them over.

"Aright then, welcome all of you to the Kame School Training. For the next eight months, this school will essentially be your life. Its rule will determine how you live, when you sleep, when and what you eat, and demand not only your best efforts, but that you strive to surpass yourselves. If you complete your training in the allotted time, you will travel with me to Papaya Island to enter the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, the most esteemed of martial arts tournaments, where the champion is declared Strongest Under the Heavens. But do not fixate on such lofty titles! It is the journey, however long or short, that you should concern yourself with. Less than twenty have held that title, but for nearly all of them it was but a single chapter in their life's stories; martial arts aren't about being able to kick butt, impress girls, er or boys, or getting sweet endorsement deals that involve posing with models on beaches.

"No, martial arts at their best are a means to the end that is a good life. They will elevate your health in mind and body. Allowing you to live life as courageously, uniquely, and energetically as you desire. The path to power is not about overcoming others, but overcoming yourself in order to become closer to your ideal self. But there is also responsibility. Justice is often thin on the ground in this world, and thus rather than flowing as a matter of course, it must at times be the generous gift of the strong to the weak. Born not out of a thirst for blood and glory, but a conscience that will not stand by and let evil have its way with the innocent when you can act to right such wrongs. So even as you temper passion with wisdom, strive to be ready to overcome evil, with one mighty blow!" Roshi declared, thrusting his staff into the air. Three of the students looked with awe on him acting so cool.

"I don't get it," Goku said, nearly knocking Roshi off his feet.

"Of course you don't, plenty of enthusiasm but not many potatoes in that stewpot you call a skull, are there?" Roshi griped.

"Wait, so are we having breakfast?" Goku asked.

"Dummy. Besides, you're the only one here who ate dinner, so just stop complaining," Krillin muttered.

"Krillin, be nice," Lunch admonished. Chichi leaned around Goku to stick her tongue out at Krillin.

"Okay Goku, I'll try and simplify it. Martial arts aren't about fighting alone, it's about helping you live well, and overcome obstacles, and be able to help others do the same. Got that?" The old master said.

"Okay, that makes more sense," Goku grinned.

"Right then, no more delays. We start the day with a light jog to the outskirts of the village. Follow me," Roshi declared, setting off at a jog, holding his staff aloft almost like he was marshaling a parade.

"I'm actually a bit excited. This could be fun," Lunch said.

"Jogging, I was expecting something a bit more intense," Krillin said.

"I hope breakfast isn't too far off," Goku grumbled.

"Me too," Chichi agreed.

"Hey now, don't talk while you jog until you can breathe well enough to do it to not affect your stamina; you four have quite the day ahead of you," Roahi chided.

Roshi came to a stop outside a larger building next to a helipad; the word "dairy" was written on its side. A bull-man stepped down from a small loading dock as Roshi walked up to him, while the students took the chance to rest.

"Guess he worked an errand into training," Krillin remarked.

"Milk goes good with breakfast," Lunch observed.

"Good morning, young man. I am the Kame Senin; I trust the arrangement we discussed over the phone still holds?" Roshi addressed the bull-man.

"Of course, though I must say it is odd for someone to offer to do the job for free. I wouldn't have agreed with it had my father not told me how you did something similar when he ran the business. Here you are, all of the out of village deliveries for the island."

Roshi took the offered marked map and nodded.

"Excellent, there is enough here for my purposes. Set out four milk trays, and we will be on our way."

"Wait, one of you is licensed to fly a helicopter, right?" the bull-man asked.

"Helicopter? Didn't your father explain? This is training, it won't work if we rely on technology like that. The adversity will build not only muscle, but character."

"But, it's not just distance, that terrain…" the milkman sputtered.

"Don't worry, I know what I am doing," Roshi assured him, waving off the concern.

Soon enough, all four had a milk tray in hand, with straps on the back of their necks. Roshi looked the over and nodded in approval.

"Well, we must make haste, not only must none of the bottles be broken, but the milk must not be allowed to go sour, either. The first house is roughly two kilos away. We will skip all the way there," Roshi said, and began to skip down the road.

"What fun!" Launch said, first to follow after the old man with a spring in her step.

"I have never skipped so much in my life," Lunch admitted, as Krillin put a bottle of milk in the milk box. It was a simple farmhouse, but their next destination was not in sight.

"Feeling the burn now, are you all?" Roshi asked.

"This isn't bad," Goku said.

"I can do this all day if Goku can," Chichi declared.

"Likewise," Krillin added.

"Well, you won't be doing this all day. After that warm-up, we have to pick up the pace to keep the milk from spoiling," Roshi chuckled.

And so it went. Their milk quest saw them running zigzag down a tree-lined dirt road. Fording swift streams with the thunder of the falls promising doom for a misstep. Crossing chasms atop logs, prompting Lunch to swap out with Launch, to charge over the balancing act with a war cry. Outrunning towering dinosaurs out to devour them. And finally ascending the island's sole mountain.

The fact they were climbing steps rather than scaling it seemed to matter little at that point, with even Goku falling to his knees on a landing. That sign of weakness from the frontrunner seemed a signal to the others to sprawl out on the cut stone.

"So even Goku's stamina is not truly boundless," Roshi remarked, impeccable as when they started and casually taking a seat to smoke lightly on his pipe.

"You ain't been hauling dairy, but how the heck are you still fresh from that?" Launch demanded, lying on her back but scooting her scalp to glare at Roshi upside-down.

"For starters, I have gone far down the path you have barely stepped on. See this through, and in eight months not only this but what comes after will hardly be more noticeable than your morning wash, dress, and breakfast."

"Really?" Chichi asked.

"It's probably a metaphor," Krillin said.

"Hardly. Now, get up. It's not nap time," Roshi said, putting out his pipe.

The summit held a simple shrine, whose resident monk seemed to know Roshi.

"Venerable Muten Roshi, it has been so long," the priest in his robe of office said.

"Ah, you're looking well."

"As are you. And so many pupils. I thought you had finally retired."

"Not yet. These four show some real promise. I intend to enter them in the Budokai," Roshi said, as the last milk bottle was deposited.

"The tournament? But that's less than a year," the monk gasped.

"Heh, it will give them some good motivation."

The milk crates returned to the dairy center, they followed Roshi, clearly feeling their laborious errand.

"Now that the early morning training is done, we can get to the morning training," the old master said.

"Breakfast?" they all moaned.

"That depends on you lot. Breakfast will be had in the village as soon as you complete the next task. Hang loose for a bit," Roshi said, running into a barely-tended field where a lone farmer was working with a hoe.

"So hungry," Goku groaned.

"Shut up," Launch said, trying to kick him, which he dodged and stuck out his tongue at her.

"Great, all is in readiness," Roshi said, walking back, "Your next task is to plow this field, that field, and that one there."

"Are we training to fight or to be day laborers?" Krillin snarked.

"You don't like it, feel free to walk out."

No one said anything.

"Very good. In the future, refrain from complaining, it's wasted energy. Now, this exercise will work different muscles than the milk run, and build your stamina as well as strength with them."

"So, where are the plows?" Chichi asked.

"You won't be using tools. This will be done barehanded, it's better for a workout and will toughen up your arms and hands."

"Good one, Master Roshi!" Krillin laughed.

"But he didn't tell a joke," Goku sad.

"Right you are, Goku. This is serious, and the more time you spend jabbering, the longer it will be till breakfast."

"I've never been shy about getting my hands dirty, but this wasn't what I had in mind," Launch said, looking at her hands befuddled.

"Goku, would you want to hold hands with someone whose hands were all dirty and calloused?" Chichi asked.

"Why wouldn't I be able to hold them then?" Goku asked.

"I'll do it!" Chichi declared with fire in her eyes, attacking the dirt at her feet.

As they moved off to their task, Roshi got his pipe out, keeping a particular eye on the two tailed kids.

"I can't tell if that boy and girl are too dense, or they are right for each other. Oh well Roshi, you're a martial artist, not a matchmaker."

Roshi was true to his word; after the fields were plowed with the promise of more such work in the months to come, they made their way to town, and with throbbing hands they ate the breakfast Roshi treated them to. Leaving the restaurant rejuvenated but wary, Launch took the lead, questioning Roshi as they made their way toward Kame House.

"What next, wax and un-wax a hundred cars, but we have to haul the water up from wells instead of using a hose or something?" the blonde demanded.

"Next is nap time."

"Huh?" the students went.

"My training doesn't have break days, so it's important you have time to replenish during your training. The regime calls for an hour-long period of rest and relaxation. With this weather, I recommend hammocks. As I said, the goal is living well. The work may be arduous, but the food will be plentiful and delicious, and you will have rest from your labors. So shall we?" Roshi asked them with a smile.

After Naptime:

"Feeling replenished?"

"Sore but better," Chichi said, the others giving similar affirmations.

"Very good. From now until lunch, we shift our focus. For you kids, it will be studying to strengthen the mind. The basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic. I have put together some work sheets today, to better gauge your respective levels for going forward."

Launch frowned.

"Hey gramps, I didn't sign up for hitting the books, unless they're bank books. I made it out of the tenth grade, ya know."

"I didn't know, but anyway, this will be your own remedial training time. While street fighting and the like may have served you well enough, now you need the foundations of combat skills the others already have. I will be teaching you my own style during this period, along with making sure they are properly attending to their lessons."

"Hey, can't I train with you guys instead?" Goku asked, holding his worksheet like it had leapt from an open sewer. Roshi bopped him over the head with his staff.

"Pay attention, the training Launch will receive here would do little good for someone with your skills. What you need, more than anyone else here, is to strengthen your mind with knowledge and mental problem-solving skills. Now, you can take those stools out on the grounds, but I insist you remain in the yard unless you need the toilet. Launch, come with me," Roshi said, leading her off. They soon left Kame House behind, with Roshi finally planting his staff in the grass of a flat area overlooking the coast, seagulls crying above and the waves hitting the short cliff separating the land from the sea.

"So, I get the butt-kicking training, this is more like it," she said, raising her fists.

"Hold there, Launch, before we go any further we need to get a few things straight," Roshi said, hands behind his back.

"What, another speech?" Launch asked.

"Sort of. You missed the one about justice at times being the gift of the strong to the weak. And responsibility for power. Lunch, I feel, needs to learn to step up more rather just be dragged along in the life you lead."

"Meh, that bluenette needs someone to take charge of her, better me who cares about her than any of the creeps back in the dirt-dash we came from," Launch said with a frown.

"Regardless, it's you I need to address. You have promise; not just strength, but the determination you have may just see you through this training, and other ordeals on the path to power. But I can't just ignore you being a bandit."

"The heck? You knew what I was when you accepted me. Or was me threatening you with a gun more motivation than you've been leading me to believe?" she said with a nasty smile. Roshi answered by taking off his loose orange shirt, revealing his scrawny old man body, with ribs visible on the wrinkly torso.

"What's with the fan disservice?" Launch asked, wrinkling her nose. Roshi clenched his teeth, and a wind blew out from him as he flexed his arm while bending his knees.

"Great green crap of Kami!" Launch swore as the old man practically burst into a muscle-bound bruiser. It wasn't just ripped muscles from his neck to legs straining against baggy pants, she could swear he'd gotten taller too.

"Still had some doubts despite everything, eh Launch? Not all the legends of the invincible old master and the Kame Senin are true, but I assure you I could make a chump of many a cynic. I have lived to see the world torn down in the Demon King's reign of terror. I have seen him fall and the world be reborn in conflict and ambition. I have seen the dynasty rise and the current state of a world half-thriving and half-neglected take hold. I have climbed towers so high they seem to pierce the heavens with my bare hands, I have swum to the bottom of the sea to claim artifacts long lost. I am the Muten Roshi, and while my lessons are not treasures to be hoarded, they are not to be idly wasted."

"Okay, I get it, you are trying to impress me. I'm feeling pretty impressed," Launch admitted, swallowing. He took off his glasses. His dark eyes were harder than she expected, piercing in fact.

"More than once, a student of mine has abused their gifts. Some of them I took care of myself, others I let linger, feeling the world needed to rise to the challenge. But I never accepted any that were evil to start with, or driven by motives too impure. Launch, you stand at a crossroads; I won't denounce you for falling to outlawry, as it's clear to my old eyes that life has not been kind. But you revel in the chaos and drag an innocent in your wake. With this training, I am not only offering you power, but a way to escape the road you have been on. If you want to simply live as you please, you can leave now, no strings, no conditions. You can even take your plunder with you. But if you stay, firstly we will return that money to the authorities at the next shopping day. And secondly, you will put crime behind you after training. Because if you do not, if I hear you have broken your word and used this sacred art for evil purposes, then I will come for you without hesitation or remorse."

Launch gulped, looking at the ground, feeling like she was standing on a cliff with her toes already over the edge. Apparently, the term "living legend" had never really hit home for what it really meant.

"So, we have a deal, training for reform?" Roshi asked. That tone… she looked up and he was back to normal, sunglasses on, and pulling his shirt back on.

'The heck? Did that really happen? You don't go from simple kookie old weirdo who's a bit badass to the hero from stories like flipping a light switch.'

"…Fine, knocking over banks would be boring if I could just punch through the walls anyway, or derail a train by kicking it," she grumbled.

"Very good! Now, the first thing we need to work on is stance. You need to learn how to stand, how to move, and how to fall before you can hope to throw a proper blow. Not to worry though, I'll be happy to correct your positioning," he grinned, hands twitching.

'And he's back,' Launch thought. She crossed her arms and watched Roshi demonstrate the first stance he wanted her to memorize.

The dishes had been washed from lunch and left to dry in the rack, and thus they left Kame House for the next task.

"That's a lot of construction for this place," Krillin remarked, at the large construction site fenced off in the village.

"It will be a new processing center for the farm goods they export to the mainland. The biggest problem is getting enough hands for a project like this, as this island doesn't have much in a hospitality industry, and it takes the ferry to get to the mainland. So, they let me sign you four up no problem," Roshi said, turning to face them.

"Maybe I was right about us being day laborers," Krillin muttered.

"It's still better than worksheets," Goku pointed out.

"Daddy did say he helped build the castle, so maybe he learned some stuff like this?" Chichi wondered.

"Huh, I always saw myself as a waitress serving construction workers, not being the construction worker," Launch said. It gave her an odd mental picture of a cute waitress her pouring coffee for another her dressed like a typical construction worker, complete with hardhat.

'Weird,' she thought, dismissing the image before one or the other could change into Lunch.

"Now then, this requires various physical skills, and also patience. And unlike the plowing, here you will get paid for your time. Now hop to it, your foreman is waiting with your uniforms."

Construction work proved varied, from hauling materials on their shoulders, pushing wheelbarrows, hammering nails, sawing. Roshi only forbade them power tools. The foreman had mercy enough to give them a break, at which point they had some water and rice balls Roshi provided. Not as intense as their past exercises, but the variety kept as much of a rhythm from being formed.

Released at the time the foreman and Roshi had agreed upon from effectively a part-time job, they did not turn toward Kame House but into yet another corner of the island. The area was thinly-treed, dominated by grasses, lone trees, and rocks jutting from the ground, from seat size to monumental.

And then there was a stunningly beautiful lake.

"Now then, you've all built up quite a bit of sweat and dirt. So now you can get the grime off with some swimming. Ten laps to the shore by yonder oak tree. There's no time limit, but I will be cross if I decide you're lagging for the sake of laziness," Roshi told them.

"But I didn't bring a swimsuit!" Chichi objected.

"Me neither!" Lunch said, raising her hand. Krillin snickered into his hand.

"Guess it's a ladies' problem, a man like me just needs to take off his shirt and shoes and he's ready to go," Krillin said, doing just that.

"Why just those?" Goku asked, already folding his clothes, crouching naked, butt pointed toward everyone.

"Ugh, Goku!" Chichi objected. Hands flew to her face, smacking into place… for a second, before her fingers parted slightly, letting her peek through. But only for a moment, as Lunch smacked her own hands over Chichi's, adding an extra layer to the defense of decency, while her face turned red and she tried and failed to look away as a puzzled Goku turned around, giving a full-frontal view.

"What's with you?" Goku asked. Roshi facepalmed while Krillin sputtered. Lunch blushed so hard she sneezed, accidentally kneeing Chichi in the back of the head in the motion. Dropping the dazed girl, Launch blinked, taking in Goku naked and scratching his butt.

"What?" she said flatly.

"We're swimming laps, race ya!" Goku laughed, jumping into the water.

"The nudity was his choice, just to be clear," Roshi said.

"And I guess I'm wearing white now when you knew we'd be swimming is a coincidence?" she growled.

"Would you believe this was never an issue, as I've only trained boys in the past? Heh heh, slipped this old man's mind."

"…You'll buy me and this girl swimsuits before we do this again. And I mean one-piece ones, got it?" she said, kicking her shoes off and diving in the water as Chichi came to her senses.

"Wait! If you go in there, you'll see Goku naked maybe!" Chichi said, leaping in without thinking to take her shoes off.

"…Fool, men of culture can appreciate a one-piece," Krillin snickered. Roshi nodded next to him.

"Indeed, well said lad. But I can't help but notice you've fallen into last place."

With a cry of alarm, Krillin leapt sloppily into the water and started paddling.

"Heh, none of them have demanded 'real' techniques yet. That's a good sign. Say, I wonder if the endangered fresh water sharks went extinct after all?" Roshi wondered. The cries of surprise and terror from his students reached him as he lit his pipe.

"Whaddaya know, the conservation system is actually working. I'll need to be sure and tell them they can't kill them after. Raptors are one thing, but that's an endangered species, I think."

"I so want to kill you right now," Launch said, flat on her back on the shore with the others.

"That fish was huge, I wanna eat it," Goku said, still naked but none of the others with the energy to notice much less care right now.

"Don't eat what tried to eat you Goku, it's weird," Krillin admonished.

"I'm with Goku, let's grill it and get revenge," Chichi growled.

"Heck, I'll take some of that," Launch chuckled.

"Now, now, it may be endangered, so none of that until I check with the island's game warden. And more importantly, you all completed the ten laps before escaping the lake. It warms this teacher's heart to see students so committed," Roshi said, wiping away an imaginary tear.

"Are we done now?" Chichi asked.

"One more to go. To test your speed and agility. In short, you're going to learn how to dodge."

"…Will it involve a bunch of yahoos shooting at us?" Launch asked, flipping over onto her front.

"Of course not, I'm not a savage."

Shortly:

The students were still soggy, save Goku, whose clothes were dry when he put them back on, and all four tied to a lush maple tree by a length of rope.

"Now then, the rope is not to be broken, and nor can you damage the tree. You must remain within this limited domain while evading the enemy. Oh, you can't counterattack either, that would go against this exercise's point," Roshi said, backpedaling away from the tree.

"What enemy?" Chichi asked.

"You going to sick some dino on us?" Launch asked, hands on her hips.

"Bring 'em on!"

"There's going to some kind of trick," Krillin groaned.

"No trick, just bees," Roshi said, kicking a small stone up into his hand and throwing it into the branches of the tree. All four students looked up with dawning horror at the thunderous buzzing sound.

"Stay lively now, or you'll get stung," Roshi cackled from behind the rock he had hidden behind.

"Congratulations you four, you have survi- I mean, completed your first day of training," Roshi addressed the students.

"Why were we tied to a tree?" Lunch asked, left side of her face swollen with bee stings.

"He's teaching us how to dodge," Chichi told her.

"Oh, I don't think it worked," Lunch said, plopping onto her butt, only to wince.

"Now, now, you're only beginning; stick with me, and before you know it, what seemed torturous and nigh impossible will be easy."

"You keep saying that-" Chichi groaned.

"Then maybe you should stop doubting. Now, with training over, you will have duties determined by the chore wheel, including making dinner. Those obligations permitting, you are free to do what you like on the island, as long as it's not illegal. I strongly recommend you get to bed early, though."

Three students groaned, while the fourth raised his hand.

"Yes, Goku?" Roshi asked, pointing to him with his staff.

"When are you going to show us cool moves like the Kamehameha?" Goku asked. Roshi's nostrils flared. Doubly so at how the others perked up.

"How impertinent. Follow me!" the master commanded.

Roshi led them back to the rocky field by the lake, and looking over the rocks, picked one taller than him. Tapping it with his staff, he spoke.

"Each of you push on this rock. Try your hardest to move it."

Chichi went first, but clearly was reluctant. Lunch pulled out a pepper pack, tagging in Launch, who did throw herself into it, but to no avail, then hopping away after kicking the rock. Krillin strained without such drama.

Roshi chuckled, even as Goku spat into his hands.

"Heh, yes, simple you say, but hard to do. And yet," Roshi stepped to the rock he was next to, having picked the spot due to the two being similar in size, and with one hand shifted the stone, plowing a small trench in the dirt as long as his arm.

"Wow! With one hand!"

'Heh, good thing I 'flexed' earlier for Launch, otherwise that would have taken more effort,' Roshi thought.

"You see, techniques like the Kamehameha and other so-called 'cool moves' will only be within your reach when your training has given you the power to at least shift a stone such as this. That will be the bare requirement to show me… show me?" Roshi trailed off as Goku gritted his teeth and with both hands, very slowly but definitely shoved the rock several paces before stopping, breathing hard.

"I did it!"

"Wow, Goku!" Chichi sparkled.

"…Huh?" Launch went, arms slack.

"Does this mean Goku gets advanced training?" Krillin asked the air.

"…Of course not! Did I not just say the 'bare minimum' was moving that rock?! At the Kame School, we don't half cock things with just squeaking by. To learn such things, you will have to be able to move… this rock!" Roshi said, dashing over to a stone nearly twice the size of Kame House.

Goku gave it several shoves as Roshi sweated a bit. It didn't budge.

"Aw man, this one's too much," Goku pouted.

"Exactly, this is why you need training, not just a fast track to fancy moves. Like the turtle, you must be slow and steady, running the race to finish, being mindful of every step. Now get back to Kame House so we can spin the chore wheel!" Roshi declared.

The kids left without further words, but Launch lingered, giving him a grin he didn't like one bit.

"Good thing those goal posts are detachable, eh gramps?" she snickered.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

After Lunch Cooked Dinner:

"I still say putting me and her both the chore wheel is unfair," Lunch complained as they gathered the dishes.

"If you are treating each other as individuals, then you're two students as far as I'm concerned," Roshi shot back, getting a new bottle of blue dish soap out from under the sink.

"Makes sense to me," Chichi said.

"Ohh, the water comes out like Bulma's magic house," Goku observed the sink running.

"You make me feel like a genius, Goku," Krillin remarked, perched on a stool to do the dishes.

"Master Roshi, is that really what we will be doing every day?" Chicgi asked.

"Of course not. Starting tomorrow…" Roshi said, going over to a sliding door. He opened the closet and pulled out an adult-sized and child-sized turtle shell with straps on it.

"You will, from waking to bedtime, do your exercises and leisure all while wearing a turtle shell weighing in at 20 kilos! Didn't you ever wonder how I got the nickname Kame Senin?" he asked the facefaulted quartet.
