Surprises
Chapter 27
"What are you going?" Mike asked, pointing at Maddie's Ipad.
"Looking up recipes for your coffee shop. Katie really enjoyed that coffee shop but there's stairs. It will be a long time before you go. Why prolong this? I can create the coffee shop vibe." Maddie asked.
"Who will be the barista?" Mike asked.
"I suppose me. I know you'll be fine with black coffee, but Katie is still figuring out her choice drink. Last time, she really liked a chai tea latte." Maddie said.
"That's not even coffee." Mike complained.
"No, its black tea mixed with steamed milk. Has spices in it." Maddie answered.
"Not coffee." Mike repeated.
"But a nice chance to spend time with Katie doing something she enjoys." Katie reminded him.
"True." Mike agreed.
"I'll make it enjoyable for you." Maddie teased. Mike leaned over and gave her a long kiss.
"Interesting comment." Mike said.
"I was referring to your coffee date with your daughter. NOT that. Yet." Maddie scolded him.
"That sounds promising." Mike remarked.
"Too bad you're recovering still and I just had a baby five weeks ago." Maddie said.
"Just a bit more time." Mike said before sneaking another kiss only to be interrupted by Gia waking up.
"She has been fussy." Maddie remarked. She adjusted her clothes and began nursing Gia.
"Its that coffee you've been drinking." Mike said.
"That is a possibility." Maddie remarked. Mike leaned down and kissed the top of Gia's head.
"When Katie was a baby, Christine was trying to work and living on caffeine. Within just a few weeks, Katie became a total bear. She had to eventually switch to a formula." Mike said.
"I just hate to not breastfeed her. She is such a good baby." Maddie said.
"She is but you have a lot on your plate right now. There is nothing wrong with taking something off that plate." Mike said.
"But breastfeeding is so important." Maddie objected. She was trying not to get emotional. Mike was only trying to help.
"Just think about it, okay? I am only suggesting it because I care about you." Mike asked.
"I know. Just a hard decision to make." Maddie said as she brushed her hand over Gia's hair. It was so soft and Maddie was already excited to see what color it was going to turn.
"Bad timing I know—but maybe she won't be the last one?" Mike suggested.
"Do you want another one?" Maddie asked.
"I wouldn't mind it. I would want to get my relationship with Katie fixed first and for you to have some time to enjoy this one, but I wouldn't be saddened by a pregnancy." Mike explained.
"Me either on those conditions." Maddie said.
"I love you." Mike answered.
"I love you too. Now, can you take her for a minute?" Maddie asked.
"Of course." Mike said. Maddie laid the baby on his chest before adjusting her clothes. Gia gave a happy smile in response.
"She loves you." Maddie said.
"Well, she is pretty lovable herself." Mike replied. Maddie just laughed in response.
"Care to hold her while I shower?" Maddie asked.
"Go ahead." Mike answered. Maddie smiled in response. She loved watching Mike with the kids. He was so at ease with them, even Katie.
