Chapter 38

The room had fallen silent, which Diana was used to. She had a presence and once most people knew who she was, they didn't know what to say at first. So, she opened the conversation first with,

"Nyssa al Ghul… I knew your father. I am glad to hear that you do not follow in his footsteps." The raven-haired woman wasn't used to being challenged but at the same time she knew just who she was dealing with.

"It is a hard legacy to break away from," she told her.

"I can imagine. If Kara trusts you, then you have my trust," Diana gave her a slight smile before turning to Kate.

"I knew your cousin. Bruce and I worked together quite a bit so I hope that you and I can do so as well."

"You knew Bruce?" Kate was surprised. She'd been surprised by a lot when she arrived back in Gotham, but somehow her cousin had managed to leave out that he'd known Wonder Woman.

"Indeed, which is why I come here now. My friend Marie has gone missing. She worked for Maxwell Lord before shifting to Obsidian North. It was all in an effort to keep an eye on Andrea Rojas. Once Miss Kane took over Obsidian, Marie was supposed to report to me, in case there was somewhere else I needed her to be. Regrettably, I was off world helping the Justice League. This is not something unusual, but what was unusual was that I had no messages from Marie upon my return. Instead, I had a message from her landlord. I went to her apartment and it looked like it hadn't been lived in, in quite some time. I have run all of my usual checks and even spoke to Mother but no luck," Diana explained.

"I hadn't heard from her either, but things have been crazy," Kara admitted.

"We'll get back to how you've been holding out on me later," Kate gave her blonde friend a look before continuing,

"We'd love to help but…"

"That is why I am here. I will help you protect Gotham. I need Kara and the Super Friends to find Marie. I reached out to J'onn and when he said you were here, I knew I had to come," Diana explained.

"Papa Bear was holding out on me too," Kate couldn't believe it.

"I fear Miss Alex has as well, or should I say Sentinel? Love the look by the way," Diana turned to the redhead with a smile. She'd not forgotten Kara's sister.

"And here I thought I knew you guys," Kate said.

"They kept my secret as Kara has kept yours," Diana said.

"We will find Marie," Kara told her.

"Please. Mother will never forgive me if she is not found and I will never forgive myself," Diana told them.

"No one at Obsidian North noticed that she wasn't picking up her checks?" Nyssa chimed in.

"Checks are issued electronically with direct deposit to bank accounts. Basically no one gets an actual paper check anymore," Kate explained.

"Ah that would do it," Nyssa said.

"What about mail?" Alex spoke up.

"The landlord said that the mailman told him her mailbox was overflowing and he couldn't stuff anymore into the box. Trying to be helpful, the landlord told him that he forgot to collect it for her. He gave me all the mail. She hadn't paid last month's electric bill. If she's been missing for that long…" everyone in the room knew what that meant. The likelihood that Marie was still alive was slim.

"Who would know that you are friends with Marie?" Kate asked.

"Only the people in this room and J'onn. We usually met at my place in National City so that none of her neighbors would see me," Diana told them.

"Does she date?" Nyssa wondered.

"Not that I know of. She'd have told me if she was," Wonder Woman said. Kara frowned and said,

"First thing in the morning Alex and I will head home."

"I'll call Layla," Alex offered. They wanted to be looped into the ARGUS investigation and to let the leader of the group know that they were no longer in Gotham.

"I'll call Layla, Alex. Can you please call J'onn for me?" Diana asked.

"Oh, Layla has some 'splaining to do as well," Kate said.
