Chapter 1: The Fire Thief and the Ice Princess

Arendelle.

A small town overlooked by the castle which was home to the Royal Family. Under the current monarchs; King Agnarr and Queen Iduna, the kingdom of Arendelle flourishes.

"GET BACK HERE YOU THIEF!!" shouted a store owner as he chased a cloaked figure through the streets people moving out of the way to avoid being hit or run over.

"Oh c'mon, it's just one apple! You've got plenty! Besides, everyone has to eat!" said the figure. Turning, the figure darted down an alleyway much to the delight of the shop proprietor as that alley, as he knew, was a dead end.

"Now I got-WHAT?!" exclaimed the owner. Upon turning the corner, he found that the figure was gone. Up on the rooftops, the figure watched the owner stamp his feet and pull at his hair in anger. What the owner didn't know was that, due to the alleyway being rather narrow, if one was agile enough they could wall-jump up to the rooftops. It went without saying that the figure was indeed agile enough.

'I win.' thought the figure with a grin. Turning, the figure jumped down from the roof and made his way out into the field. Coming to a stop, the figure looked around before removing his hood revealing a boy not even ten years old.

He had black unruly hair that reached to his shoulders and reddish-brown eyes. He wore a tan cloak and pants with silver wolf-skin boots.

Walking over to a nearby tree trunk, the boy sat down and pulled out his prize; the hard-earned apple!

"Through the lips, over the gums, look out stomach here it comes! DINNER TIME!!!" exclaimed the boy happily. He opened his mouth to take a bite when…

"Moooo…" The boy stopped and blinked before turning his head to the right and seeing a cow. The boy and the cow stared at each other for a good minute as the latter licked its lips. The boy looked from the cow to his apple and back again and saw the cow shift its gaze to the apple and lick its lips again.

"Oh no," the boy shook his head as he moved the apple out of reach. "You've got this entire field to eat from. We humans, however, need something a little more substantial than grass." The cow looked at the boy and slowly blinked.

"Moooo…" The two continued to stare at each other for a good minute before…

"Oh fine!" the boy relented tossing the apple on the ground in front of the cow which gobbled it up. "I wasn't that hungry anyway." A loud growl from the boy's stomach said otherwise.

"Moooo…" The cow walked away, but not before giving the boy a lick on the cheek in thanks.

"Yeah, yeah, you're welcome." the boy sighed good-naturedly as he patted the cow's side. Leaning back on his hands, the boy looked up at the star-filled night sky.

'I could try swiping from another vendor…' thought the boy before shaking his head. 'No, the town is probably crawling with guards by now. It'll be at least a few days before I can get anything else. Not to mention I don't have any training in how to hunt.' Tilting his head to the right, the boy saw Arendelle Castle bathed in the moonlight and standing tall in the night sky.

'The Royal Family is lucky. They don't have to worry about going hungry or finding a place to sleep at night. Meanwhile, people like me have to scavenge for food and shelter. Living in their big castle, surrounded by guards and pantries full of any kind of food they could want. Maids and butlers. Living a life of luxury. No wonder they closed the gates.' thought the boy as he lay back on the stump. The boy lay there for a good minute staring up at the stars when something occurred to him that had him shoot up ramrod straight.

"The town… is swarming with guards. That means that the guard's presence in the castle is currently low." said the boy. A smile formed on his lips as the boy threw his hood over his head.

-o0o0o0o0o-

'Almost… there…' thought the boy as he climbed up the south side of the wall surrounding Arendelle Castle using small handholds and footholds that were jutting out. 'Mental note: next time something like this happens just wait for the gate to open to let the guards out.' Reaching the top, the boy pulled himself onto the walkway and then hopped over the other side into a large pile of hay.

The boy barely poked his head out of the hay to check and make sure no one noticed him. Seeing no one, the boy leaped from the hay, sprinted across the courtyard, and made it into the castle. Sticking to the shadows, the boy moved as silently as possible through the castle halls.

'Kitchens, kitchens. Where are the kitchens?' thought the boy.

-Meanwhile-

Princess Elsa was walking through the halls of the castle on her way back to her room. She had been checking the Royal Library once again for some way to control her ice powers. Her father; King Agnarr, had said she was born with these powers, but yet, they felt more like a curse. The troll elder had said her powers would grow stronger and that fear would be her enemy, but he hadn't said what she needed to do to gain control.

Her father had reduced the staff, closed the gates, and even placed her and her little sister; Princess Anna in separate rooms.

'Anna…' Elsa thought guiltily. Why hadn't she insisted on Anna going back to bed that night? If only she had been more insistent. If only she had been faster with the snow-made platforms. If only she hadn't made each one taller than the last, then maybe she wouldn't have accidentally hit her sister in the face with her powers.

Thankfully it was only her face, but the permanent white streak in her sister's red hair was a constant reminder to Elsa of her mistake.

*WHAM!!*

"OOF!!/OOF!!" grunted two voices as Elsa collided with someone. Regaining her bearings, Elsa sat up intending to apologize only for her eyes to widen. Laid out on the floor before the girl was a boy she didn't recognize wearing silver wolf-skin boots, tan pants, and a tan cloak. The boy groaned as he raised up revealing unruly black hair that reached his shoulders and rather captivating reddish-brown eyes.

"Oh, what did I hit?" groaned the boy shaking his head. Blinking, the boy's eyes widened. Before him, with whitish-blond tied hair with a black headband, beautiful blue eyes and a barely noticeable smattering of freckles across her cheeks and the bridge of her nose was a girl about the same age as himself.

"Wow..." the boy breathed. This seemed to snap Elsa back to reality with a sharp intake of air. The boy's eyes widened in panic before lunging forward and slapping a hand over the princess's mouth.

"No, no, no, don't scream!" the boy hissed. "I'm just looking for the kitchens! I'm not gonna hurt you, I prom-!" The boy stopped as he felt a sudden cold sensation coming from his hand on Elsa's mouth. In the princess's panic, she reached up and grabbed the boy's hand in order to remove it so she could scream for the guards having momentarily forgotten why she had been avoiding physical contact with anyone other than her parents.

The boy removed his hand from Elsa's mouth to reveal that it had been frozen in ice much to the young princess's horror.

"Ice?" the boy questioned as he looked at his hand in surprise. The girl clutched her hands to her chest in horror as she realized that she had hurt someone else with her powers. Not just hurt them, but might very well have cost the boy his hand. So worried, was she, that it didn't dawn on Elsa that now someone from outside the castle, who had broken in, knew that she had powers.

The boy looked at the horrified Elsa with wonder and asked one question that ground all her thoughts to a halt.

"You have powers, too?"

"T-too?" questioned Elsa. To her shock, steam began pouring from the boy's frozen hand causing the ice to melt. When it melted, the boy's hand was awash with flame. The princess watched with wide eyes as the flames dissipated and the boy flexed his completely unharmed hand.

"That's better." said the boy.

"Y-you have fire magic?" asked a shocked Elsa. The boy nodded as he stood and offered a hand to the girl. Noticing her hesitate, the boy grinned at her.

"Don't worry." said the boy making Elsa look up at him. "Even if you freeze my hand again I can thaw it." Elsa looked at the boy's offered hand a moment longer before slowly reaching up and taking it allowing the boy to pull her up to her feet. Elsa noted with interest that the boy's hand was rather warm which contrasted pleasantly with her cold hands.

"Jason." Elsa blinked and looked at him in confusion.

"Huh?" The boy chuckled.

"My name." the boy clarified. "My name is Jason. What's your name?"

"Um, Elsa." answered the princess. Looking back down at their joined hands, Elsa's eyes widened slightly before snatching her hand back. Calling on her father's lessons on how royalty should act, she gave Jason an imperious look as she folded her hands in front of her and cleared her throat.

"Princess Elsa of Arendelle." Jason blinked a couple of times.

"Princess?"

"INTRUDER!!" shouted a voice. Whipping their heads down the hall, Elsa and Jason saw a group of Royal Guards charging toward them.

"Uh oh," Jason said before turning to Elsa. "Well, it was nice meeting you, Elsa, but I gotta go! Bye!" With that, Jason turned and ran the guards passing the princess in their pursuit. Two of the guards stopped by Elsa's side.

One had hair black as midnight with a matching beard and mustache and hard dark eyes. His uniform had gold linings and buttons, and he wore a white cape with gold lining over his left shoulder.

The other had hair as red as a sunset and was clean-shaven with soft brown eyes whilst his uniform had silver linings and buttons and had a silver cape over his left shoulder.

These two were General Calen and Lieutenant Gaius, respectively. These two commanded the Royal Guard and their authority was surpassed only by Elsa's parents the King and Queen.

"Lieutenant, get the princess to safety immediately!" ordered Calen as he moved to follow the other pursuers. Gaius inclined his head before turning and looking down at Elsa.

"Come, princess, it is not safe here." Elsa looked up at Gaius with worry and shook her head.

"Take me to Papa."

"Princess…"

"Now!"

-With Jason-

'Oh man, oh man, oh man!' thought Jason as he ran through the corridors and hallways of Arendelle Castle with the Royal Guard hot in pursuit. He ran and ran and ran as he tried to come up with an escape plan. He couldn't use his original point of entry now because even if he succeeded and escaped his pursuers would learn how he got in eliminating that route of entry. The gate, for obvious reasons, was a no-go as well.

The boy tore through another door and soon found himself out on a veranda. Rushing to the edge, he looked over the stone railing and saw the waters of the fjord far below.

'Looks like my only option.' thought Jason as he pulled himself up to stand on the railing. Taking a deep breath, the boy leaped off. The guards rushed to the edge and looked over just in time to glimpse something hit the water far below.

Calen growled and banged his fist on the stone railing in frustration before turning to his men.

"To the boats! I want the intruder found and caught even if you must search the entire fjord!" ordered Calen. With a chorus of "Yes sir," the men immediately made to carry out their orders.

-With Agnarr and Iduna-

King Agnarr paced in his study whilst his wife; Queen Iduna sat in a nearby chair.

Agnarr was a tall man with a slender build, strawberry-blond hair with sideburns, and a mustache and green eyes.

Iduna was a young woman, slender, with long brown hair in a bun and blue eyes.

The Queen watched her husband pace with worry written clear across her face.

"How could an intruder enter the castle? The gate has been shut for a couple of months now," questioned Iduna as she fingered her scarf. Agnarr shook his head.

"I'm not sure. When my father built the castle he had multiple secret passages created in order to allow for quick evacuation in the event the castle ever came under attack. It's possible that the intruder knew of one or two of the passages. I've already sent some guards to check all of them to be sure." The Queen shook her head.

"But our daughters…" Iduna lamented. Agnarr, looking at his worried wife, walked over and knelt before her.

"Anna is in her room and I've already stationed guards outside her door," Agnarr explained as he placed a comforting hand on his wife's shoulder. "And Elsa was in the library reading up on how to control her powers. I've already sent General Calen and Lieutenant Gaius to retrieve her and get her somewhere safe until this intruder is either caught or is confirmed to no longer be in the castle." Taking his hand from her shoulder, the king cupped his queen's cheek.

"I will do everything in my power to protect you and our daughters. I made this same vow on the day of our wedding and each day our daughters were born." Iduna gave her husband a loving smile as she reached up and cupped the hand on her cheek.

"I know," Iduna answered.

*BANG!!*

The door to the study banging open had Agnarr on his feet and standing between the potential threat and his wife in a heartbeat.

"PAPA! MAMA!" Elsa's cry as she ran into the room had Iduna on her feet and gathering her eldest daughter in her arms in a second. Gaius followed in a fraction of a second later and bowed.

"Apologies, your Majesties." Gaius apologized. Agnarr looked away from his wife and eldest daughter to the lieutenant with a frown.

"I thought I ordered both you and General Calen to find Elsa and take her somewhere safe until the intruder was captured or confirmed to be no longer in the castle. Why did you bring her here? Where is General Calen?" questioned Agnarr.

"My apologies, your Majesty, but the princess was insistent that she see you immediately," Gaius explained. "As for General Calen, he has joined the pursuit of the intruder." Elsa squirmed in her mother's arms causing the Queen to let her down.

"Papa, Jason isn't dangerous," Elsa said as she looked up at her father. Both Agnarr and Iduna looked down at their daughter in alarm.

"Jason? Do you mean you encountered the intruder?!" asked an even more worried Iduna. Elsa nodded her head frantically.

"Yes, but he didn't hurt me. We ran into each other in the third-floor corridor. I was startled and when I tried to scream he covered my mouth and-"

"He what?!" exclaimed an outraged Agnarr. How dare someone lay a hand on his daughter! The King was usually cool and even-tempered, but when his family was in potential danger that went out the window.

"Please just listen!" begged Elsa, surprising her parents, before continuing. "He said he was just looking for the kitchens and that he wasn't gonna hurt me. I reached up to remove his hand, but I…I accidentally froze his hand." Agnarr and Iduna looked at their daughter in alarm at this news. It was for this very reason that they had decided to limit their eldest daughter's contact with other people.

"I was terrified when I realized what I had done, but he wasn't scared, or anything like that. He was surprised. He asked me, "You have powers, too?" and then he…" Elsa seemed almost mystified, as though she couldn't quite believe it even though she saw it first hand, and yet, was intrigued all the same. "He thawed his hand and it was covered in flames, but he was totally fine." Elsa looked up at her parents seeing their shocked expressions.

"He's like me, Papa, only he can create and control fire." said an almost excited Elsa. However, that excitement soon vanished and was replaced with worry.

"He was wearing wolf-skin boots, pants, and a cloak, but they looked tattered and worn. I think he lives on the streets. He must have been so desperate for food that he broke in just to get something, anything, to eat." said Elsa with tears prickling the corners of her eyes. "He didn't look any older than me."

"Oh, honey." cooed Iduna as she got down on her knees and hugged her upset daughter.

*KNOCK, KNOCK!*

"Enter," said Agnarr. The door to the study opened and in walked General Calen. Stepping up beside his lieutenant, the general bowed.

"Your Majesty, Head Maid Gerda's report was true. There was indeed an intruder, a boy, but I'm sorry to report that he escaped. He jumped from the veranda into the fjord. I already have my men searching the fjord for him as we speak. He shall be in the dungeons by this time tomorrow, or-"

"That's enough!" ordered Agnarr seeing his daughter become more distraught with each word. "I have already been informed that the intruder is no threat. When he is found, I want him brought to me unharmed." Calen blinked in surprise, his eyes flicking to the princess momentarily who burrowed further into her mother's arms upon noticing him looking her way, before clearing his throat.

"But your Majesty, the intruder could've harmed Princess Elsa. Whatever he said to her, well, he could have been lying to her. The Princess is still a child. She doesn't yet comprehend-"

"I am well aware of the possibility, General, and I would appreciate you leaving my daughter out of this. Am I clear?" interrupted Agnarr with a glare. The general gave a barely noticeable glare but bowed.

"My apologies, Your Majesty." Agnarr continued to glare at the general. He knew both his daughters didn't like the man one bit. Even his wife had confided that something about the man put her on edge. The general had served during Agnarr's father's reign as a lieutenant at the time and had proven to be an effective soldier, but when both his wife and daughters were uncomfortable around the man Agnarr had to take action. Perhaps it was time for Calen to step down as general?

-With Jason-

"BLEH!" a completely soaked Jason coughed as he pulled himself up on the shore of the fjord. It was fortunate that having fire powers allowed him to produce bursts of flame which he had used to slow his fall so he didn't break every bone in his body upon contact with the water.

'Well, so much for getting food from the castle.' thought a disgruntled Jason as he lay on the shore staring up at the night sky. 'Next time I'm getting a map.' His stomach loosed a loud growl causing him to sigh.

'Still…' thought Jason as an image of Elsa flashed through his mind. 'I actually met the princess.' Sitting up, Jason held up his right hand and produced a small flame in his palm.

'She's like me. Yeah, her power is ice, but she has powers, too. I'm…not alone.' thought Jason in wonder as he recalled the cold sensation followed by the ice that had formed on his hand when the princess had grabbed his hand. 'She seemed upset when she froze my hand. I don't think she can control her power. That must be why they closed the gates. Isolation.'

The boy felt sorry for Elsa. The girl shouldn't have to go through what she was going through just because of her powers, but he could also understand the King and Queen's reasoning for it. The Princess needed to gain control of her powers or she might accidentally hurt someone, but complete isolation?

Another growl from his stomach broke Jason from his thoughts. The boy sighed as he stood up.

"Well, one thing at a time. First, I need to get some food, then I can work on the Elsa problem." Jason said to himself. "Hopefully, I can find some berries in the forest." Another growl had him clutching his stomach.

"I need to learn how to hunt."

-To be continued-

UltimaShishigawa: Hey guys! Hope you enjoyed this preview of my Frozen fanfic. I'll admit that when I saw the trailer for the movie ten years ago I wasn't too sure about it. I'll admit I was the stereotypical boy growing up. I didn't like anything that seemed girly, lol, but then I actually watched the movie and thought "THIS IS GREAT!"

Anyway, recently I watched the movie again, and the writer's bug bit me so here we are. The actual full fic will be a one-shot but with multiple "mini-chapters." I'm also trying to come up with something for my Naruto Shippuden: Light and Darkness Reversed fic, but NO promises.

I hope you continue to enjoy my stories. Please read, review, and comment, but DON'T flame! Constructive criticism is welcome, but don't be harsh. Peace, I'm out!
