HINATA
GRADUATION DAY
"I can't believe Natsu got sick during my ceremony," I reply. I was surprised when I went to locate my family for pictures that after a few photos they had to go. Mom encouraged me to take photos with my friends. I had to hunt down Kageyama, Tsukishima, and Yamaguchi in the crowd. Asahi and Noya I ran into later on getting some pictures. Miya was at the ceremony but said something came up and he would see me later. I know he is going to explain what happened to me later. It was so hot outside so I told the others we would catch up at some point in time.
"I know sweetheart," says mom pulling into the driveway. "I'm glad I was able to get pictures of you and your friends in your cap and gown. This is such a big moment! I hope Natsu is feeling better. You know how she is mama's girl." I chuckle because mom stopped for gas. I get out of the car.
"Did you cook my favorites?" I ask referring to food.
"I sure did," says mom pulling out the keys. "I'm so exhausted. Ready to relax."
"You will soon," I reply. "I appreciate you mom." She smiles unlocking the door. I can smell the food from here. My belly growls letting me know it is more than ready. I walk into the house with all the lights coming on.
"Surprise!" yells Natsu along with several others. I grab my chest jumping. I'm looking around bewildered. "Did you see his face dad?" She begins to laugh. Mom pats my back as Miya walks over to me with flowers. I am too stunned to even be embarrassed. Miya kissing my cheek.
"Surprise," he says.
"I can't believe this," I mutter glancing around. I begin to laugh.
"I wasn't sure if we could pull this off," says dad. "Go ahead and greet your family and friends."
"You invited my friends?" I ask.
"Got Natsu's help with that," says mom closing the door. I look at Miya.
"You knew about this," I reply.
"I did," he says with a wide grin. I left to come help set up and to be here to see your face. I wouldn't miss that for the world!" I chuckle.
"You guys did great," I reply. "Thanks for the flowers. I'm going to go put these in water." On my way to the kitchen I was stopped by several family members I hadn't seen in a while. I was congratulated, hugged, kissed, hands shaken. The main person I am looking for I don't see. I grab a vase from the pantry as mom keeps extra in at the bottom from previous mother's day and birthday day floral arrangements. I fill the vase up with water placing the flowers in inside. "I'm going to put this in my room." Mom nods as she is in the kitchen checking on the food. I speak to several people on the way to my room. I can't lie I feel exhausted already. Something about dealing with a lot of people's energu can do that to you. I open my room door seeing Kageyama staring out my window. His back is to me. "Tobio…." He looks over his shoulder.
"I knew you would come to your room," he says. I recover as I feel the vase slipping from my fingers. I close my room door before setting my case on my desk beside the window. Kageyama finally turns to face me. "I wasn't in here the whole time." I chuckle.
"I'm sure," I reply. Kageyama hair is longer than I have ever seen it. It makes him look younger, more chill in a sense. The low back is short. The rest is long reminding of a kpop boy band member. I saw it earlier but didn't have time to comment on it. I'm not use to seeing Kageyama try out different hair styles. I guess I can thank Akaashi for that.
"You certainly were surprised," he says with a smile. I cover my mouth laughing lowly.
"How long have you known about this?" I ask. Kageyama laughs a little.
"A while," he replies. "I knew when I ran into you two weeks ago." I laugh amused by all of this. I fold my arms.
"How did you even get up here?" I inquire.
"When everyone was saying surprised," he explains. "It was not easy when you started moving through the crowd. I didn't want you to see me yet."
"Um hm," I hum. "What is going on with this hair?" Kageyama runs his hand through his hair.
"I was just trying it out," he replies. "It's so not me. I will be getting it cut on Monday. I was expecting you to ask me about that earlier."
"I was busy trying to take pictures," I explain. "It was hot as hell outside."
"Exactly why I need this hair gone," he chuckles. "Nice flowers."
"Atsumu got them for me," I reply. "I will take them with me when I head back to the apartment." Kageyama nods looking at me through the strands of his hair. The butterflies return to my stomach. Can't be alone with him. That feeling is coming back…I look away. "Let's get back to this awesome party!" Kageyama nods. He follows me out of my room. I head downstairs now able to focus. Diachi, Sugawara, Kenma, and Kuroo are among the flock. Tsukishima and Yamaguchi stopped by later on after spending time with their loved ones. It was a long afternoon. I'm in the kitchen helping mom when my dad taps me to follow him into the back yard.
"I'm proud of you Shoyo," says dad. He glances at me. "College graduate and playing in the league." I blush.
"Thanks dad," I reply. "It wasn't easy sometimes."
"I get it," he replies. "Do you plan to keep your job?"
"I can't," I reply. "My team practice starts in a few weeks." I am quiet a moment. "It's amazing to know this is my life." Dad nods.
"It is," he replies. "You fought hard for it." I nod. "I wanted to let you know Natsu has gone to her girlfriends for a slumber party. She wanted to say goodbye to you but you were busy with your friends."
"Dad…." I mutter.
"It's okay," he replies. "You will see Natsu soon enough. I am taking your mom for a weekend getaway. She has been working so hard putting this together. The cooking, the cleaning…." I grin knowing this is a romantic getaway. He looks happy already.
"Mom has no idea does she?" I ask.
"Not at all," my fathey chuckles. "Can I trust you to lock up the house? I am about to go snatch her off her feet."
"I got you dad," I reply. I stand with my dad chatting a little while longer before heading back into the house. Miya is waving goodbye to Sugawara and Daichi. They are headed out for the evening. Kageyama stepped in helping my mom finish the kitchen. "Hey Atsumu, you doing okay?"
"Yeah," he replies. "It's been a long day. I am about to head home."
"I will be right behind you," I reply. "I need to finish up a few things here."
"Alright," says Miya leaning in kissing me. "See you soon." He glances behind me at Kageyama who is still in the kitchen. "Call me as soon as you get to the car."
"Okay," I reply. It's a simple request. Besides I wouldn't mind the chat during my drive. I walk Miya to the door seeing him off. He gives me another kiss and hug before he took off. I head back in the house hearing my mom giggling. I know what that is about.
"Come on honey," says dad with two rolling suitcases. "Our adventure awaits." Mom glances at me.
"Did you put your father up to this?" she asks.
"Nope," I reply. "It's all him." Kageyama walks over to stand beside me.
"You deserve it," Kageyama says.
"Thank you," replies mom blushing as dad is taking the suitcases outside. "Are you sure you will be okay sweetie."
"Yes mom," I reply. "I will lock up the house when I head out." Mom nods before looking at Kageyama.
"It was great seeing you again," she replies. "It's been much too long."
"I agree," says Kageyama.
"Don't stay away for two long you here," she says heading towards the door.
"Yes ma'am," replies Kageyama. I hug my mom once more with her kissing my cheek.
"Have a good night sweetheart," she says sweetly. "Text me when you get home okay."
"I will mom," I reply. She smiles walking out the door. My father waves from the car clearly eager to get on the road. Kageyama and I watch them pull off.
"That was cute," says Kageyama. I laugh a little.
"Yeah it was," I reply. "I can't believe you stayed here the whole time." I close the front door. "What about your family?"
"I told them about the surprise party and how I wanted to be here," he explains. "We will be doing something tomorrow evening."
"Awe Tobio," I reply. "You could have spent time with your family."
"I know, I know," he sighs. "I really wanted to be here." Kageyama and I stare at each other for a moment. Those butterflies return. This is insane. How does he make me feel like this every single time I see him. "I guess I should go…."
"I will be heading home myself," I reply. "Just going to do a walkthrough for my parents, grab the flowers." Kageyama nods heading towards the door. I almost don't want him to leave. I want him to stay and talk. Hang out like we use to. Kageyama looks like he wants to say something to me but he doesn't.
"I'll see you around," he says.
"Yeah," I reply. "Or on the court." Kageyama smirks waving before walking out the door. I can't een bare to watch him leave. I lean against the door thinking about will it be long before I see him again. I find myself not wanting that anymore. Kageyama and I should be able to be friends. If he is uncomfortable being around me I wonder does he feel the way I do. We should be able to be around each other alone. My phone buzzes. I pull it out of my pocket glancing the text.
Miya: You leave yet
Hinata: Not yet. My parents just left. About to check on a few things and then I will be on my way.
I put my phone in my back pocket walking into the living room. It looks like it always does. I head into the kitchen seeing it is back to it's regular order. As I head into the living room I hear a knock on the door. I walk over peaking out the peep hole. I swing the door open seeing Kageyama. He does a little wave.
"Hey," I say slowly.
"Sorry but my car won't start," he explains. I was not expecting to hear that.
"Are you sure?" I ask.
"Very," says Kageyama. I step out on the porch. Kageyama and I walk over to his car. He pops the hood but I don't know shit about cars. It's like looking at the inside of a computer to me.
"Eh, I have no idea," I reply. Kageyama hums.
"I think it is the alternator," he replies. "My battery is drained. I am going to have to get my car to a shop."
"Nothing is open right now," I reply.
"I know," he sighs. "I can catch uber or cab." Catch a cab?
"Why don't you stay the night?" I ask. "You can contact them in the morning. I can drop you off home as well." Kageyama is surprised.
"You would do that?" he asks. I nod my head yes. It feels like fate is pushing us together. What are the odds. Mid as well hang out for a little while.
"Sure," I reply. "My parents won't mind." I pull out my cell sending my mom and dad both a text about Kageyama and I staying the night. Since they are probably still in route to their destination I don't know when they will see it. Kageyama is sending a text of his own. Miya. Oh shit. I didn't even think about him. "Tobio, I need to make a call. I'll be right back."
"Okay," he says. "I'm going to make sure my car is locked up. I will be right behind." I nod hitting Miya's number in my phone. As I slide of my shoes he answers right away.
"Shoyo!" he exclaims. I chuckle hearing the smile on his face.
"Hi Atsumu," I greet.
"It's getting late," he replies. "I was almost worried. I got something nice planned for you."
"Do you now," I reply. "Well I was calling because I won't be home tonight. I will definitely be there tomorrow."
"I don't understand," says Miya slowly. "Why aren't you coming home tonight?" I don't want to tell him the truth. I already know it is going to lead to an argument.
"Something has come up," I reply. "I need to stay at my parents home."
"Like what?" he asks. "They never ask you to stay the night."
"I didn't know you had something nice planned Atsumu," I reply. "Can we do what you have planned tomorrow? I will make it up to you then, I promise."
"Shoyo, this makes no sense," he replies with a hint of anger. "What's the reason you aren't coming home tonight?" The line goes silent. I sigh trying to be an adult about this. I shouldn't have to hide what is going on.
"Kageyama's car…."
"Are you fucking kidding me!" shouts Miya.
"This is exactly why I didn't want to say anything!" I exclaim walking into the living room. "Whenever I mention his name you are flying off the handle."
"I am justified in how I fucking feel," snaps Miya. "What the fuck does his car have to do with you not coming home tonight?"
"He is going to be having his car towed in the morning," I reply. "He needed somewhere to sleep…."
"There are hotels Shoyo!" he yells cutting me off. I close my eyes with the past few months finally coming to head. "There is no reason for him to stay in your parents home. Just admit you want him there."
"I do," I reply. "I do want him here." The line goes deathly silent. "This is not what I wanted to do Atsumu but I can't do this anymore. All we ever do is fight. You don't trust me and simply said I'm not happy anymore." I can hear a low gasp.
"Y-you're breaking up with me…." he mutters. I blink back tears. I have never had to do this before. Earlier in the evening everything was fine and now I want to end it. Permanetly.
"Yes," I say lowly. "I'm sorry…."
"Fuck you," he sneers. "You're not fucking sorry." I sigh.
"You have every right to be mad," I reply. "I don't expect a relationship to be perfect but you don't trust me."
"It was never about you but him," he says. "Whatever, go ahead and fuck him. That's what you really want to do anyway." Miya hangs up before I can respond. I close my eyes glancing at the ceiling. Did I really do the right thing? Am I being too rash?
"Shoyo….." says Kageyama quietly. I turn towards him seeing him in the corner by the front door. I wipe my tears away. Just because the breakup was my idea doesn't mean I am okay. I cared for Miya. He was the first guy I was ever with. My first real relationship.
"Hey," I reply my voice shaking a little. "Um let me get a futon for you." Kageyama looks serious following behind me.
"I wasn't ready to head to sleep yet," says Kageyama anxiously. Now at the top of the stairs I glance back at him. He is looking down. "I was hoping we could watch movies or shows like we use to." I smile happy that he shared the same idea as me.
"Sure," I reply. "Let's watch something neither of us have seen!" Kageyama chuckles.
"I can't speak for you but I have been pretty busy," he says following me into my room. I grab my TV remote cutting it on.
"We can rent if you like," I reply. "I have no problem paying."
"Alright," says Kageyama walking to the draw where his extra clothes are. He opens the top draw. "I can't believe you still have some of my clothes here."
"Well yeah," I reply. "Sometimes I feel like my room is a high school time capsule. I don't like changing much in it."
"I'm glad you don't," he replies. "So many good memories here." Kageyama removes his shirt revealing a toned back. Jesus….I um don't recall him being this ripped. I shake my head.
"I can give you the room if you want to change," I reply.
"Why bother?" he states. "You have already seen everything." Kageyama causally drops his bottoms. My heart is pounding. It feels wrong to be staring at him yet I can't stop. "Kind of warm out so I will go with the shorts." Kageyama goes commando sliding on his shorts before tossing on a tee shirt. He finally looks at me. "Shoyo….." I turn away from him embarrassed he saw me watching him.
"It is warm out tonight," I state busying myself with the remote. I don't really need to. I should be walking over to my draws but Kageyama is over there. "I will probably be wearing the same." I finally turn around seeing Kageyama set his folded clothes in my desk chair.
"I expect nothing less," says Kageyama. He walks over to me grabbing the remote. I take this time to go to my dresser. "What are we in the mood for? Drama, Comedy , horror…." I dug into my draw grabbing my favorite navy shirt. It's so soft, I love it. I grab my navy and green fannel shorts. "How did I know you were going to grab that one."
"Because your my best friend," I say before laughing. Part of me wants to step out of the room but I know I am being ridiculous. He is right. We have seen more than enough of each other. I pull my shirt over my head sliding on the tee shirt.
