He watched from afar, taking gradual sips of his beer, the guitar softly humming in the background, soft chatter of all friends and family surrounding him until his eyes fell upon her. He watched as she approached Zuko, arms folded, as she tried to steer him away from the people he was socialising with. That is until Haru stepped in, clearly faking being drunk as he patted and shooed her away. He continued watching as he saw them arguing for the first time, Haru's drunken facade clearly broken while he took what seemed to be a verbal beating, reminiscent of the old Toph he knew and loved. They continued arguing for a few seconds until Toph slapped her black fedora hat against his chest and rushed away. Haru didn't follow, smart; allowing her a moment to cool-off.

He, however, didn't care. Slowly, he approached her from behind, calculating what the best move would be, until he decided to throw caution in the wind and wrapped his arm around Toph's neck from behind. She made a small groan of protest but didn't fight as he started rubbing her arm comfortingly, his arm now draped over her collar bone as he gave her a semi-hug.

"Why are you marrying this guy?"

"What?" she gazed diagonally up at him, confusion bared across her features.

He paused for a moment, staring into her eyes before he cringed and looked away.

"I saw how jealous he got when you approached Zuko." He leaned forward slightly and offered her the beer he held in his other hand. Toph grabbed it and pushed him off her softly to set him straight.

"Aang I didn't -", she removed his arm from over her shoulder and straightened her posture, turning slightly in his direction to address him. "I didn't go there to talk to Zuko. I went there to kick his ass." Aang blinked a few times in confusion, slightly taken aback while Toph continued to explain. "He's accumulated a bill of two thousand dollars in two days. One thousand from alcohol and the other from poker. A bill which Haru has just paid off today." Aang's eyes softened in understanding as he felt a well of pride building in him for his brother-in-law. "He wasn't jealous; he was just stopping me from insulting Zuko."

In the distance, a loud cheer was announced as the gentle strumming of the guitar was concluded while Aang continued, now intrigued more than anything regarding his best friend's journey.

"So, are you not in love with Zuko anymore?"

Toph's eyes widened in surprise as a gentle, embarrassed blush coloured her pale cheeks.

"You knew?"

"Everyone knew," Aang declared, chuckling along with her as he nodded. "Besides that oblivious idiot Zuko."

"Yeh man, I used to love him," Toph declared, a slightly sad smile donned on her lips as she gazed into his grey eyes. "But, you know, he was never interested in that relationship. It was just me, alone. But, with Haru…" Her smile transformed into an excited grin, eyes sparkling with love and joy as she chuckled again in happiness. "How do I explain it? You know, it's like… before Haru, I was fine. Everything was fine. But after meeting him, I realised that I could be happy too." Aang blinked a couple times, not expecting such maturity and honesty from his best friend while his lips curved upwards into a satisfied smile. They both averted and shared the sight of the glowing lights, luscious, green garden, and the smell of booze and laughter of friends and family as both of them began envisioning a future while Toph elaborated. "It's simple, with some people… just spending time with them makes everything feel better."

His smile became much more serene as her blue eyes flashed before him, images of them smiling, laughing, even just talking together, filling him with such joy and tranquillity that he felt as if he'd arrived in heaven. With the warm blanket of booze empowering him, he gently pushed Toph towards Haru when he saw him approaching. They both gazed at each other apologetically, Haru handing Toph back her fedora as she thanked him.

"I'm sorry."

"I'm sorry, too," she hushed out immediately. "But you shouldn't shout at me."

"I didn't shout."

"You called me a bitch."

"I didn't say 'bitch'..."

Aang chuckled as their voices faded into the background of the buzzing guitar. Although still somewhat surprised by just how much his old, proud friend had changed, for the better if he might add. Aang found clarity in his current situation as he realised there was something he should have long ago.

"Aang. Aang?"

He turned around to address Haru who was gesturing for him to follow and join them in the celebrations. Aang's heart slightly melted at his thoughtfulness but he shook his head and gestured for them to continue.

"You guys carry on," he said, grabbing two bottles of beer from a waiter passing by as he shuffled towards the pond in the distance. "I have something I need to do."

Not long after his eyes landed on her did he start feeling lightheaded. She was facing away from him, her long, silky dark brown hair cascading down her back, her white dupatta simple but elegant, and blue dress matching her eyes perfectly. She was flowing her hand through the water in the pond beside her, the naked tan skin of her arm glowing with the moonlight and multiple candles scattered across the garden making her appear golden. His serenity however, was disturbed by another.

"The magic of this night is intoxicating," said a man, slightly shorter than him, donning a short beard, dark blue shirt and black chinos.

He watched as Katara greeted him, stretching out her hand to accept the beer he was offering her. She smiled and he was about to hand it and sit beside her, until he noticed Aang standing behind them and retracted his arm in defence.

"Are you looking for something?" He asked kindly.

Aang gazed at him for a second, before opting to ignore him as he turned his attention to Katara.

"Who's this?" He asked her.

Despite being surprised by his presence, Katara kept her cool and tried to remain neutral as she answered.

"This is Jet," she stated, wearing a fake grin as she gazed at Aang, hoping to reassure him - or herself. "He's here to record and document the wedding."

"And to meet Katara," the man, named 'Jet', added, now handing her the booze which she reluctantly accepted.

"Why are you sitting here?" Aang as Katara as she stared at him, her confusion and surprise gradually growing as Jet interrupted.

"Who are you?"

"Get lost."

"Aang?" Katara objected, her voice not betraying her shock; she'd never seen him so confrontational.

"Excuse me?"

"I said," despite being aware that he was likely disrespectfully out of line, and mostly acting unlike himself, all Aang saw was red. "You, please," he pointed towards Jet, "get lost."

"Aang, stop it," Katara's steeled blue eyes were adamant when they clashed, both of them refusing to back down for the time being.

"You are being rude," Jet commented, posturing himself more so towards Aang as he too became confrontational.

"Look, this," he continued, etching closer to Katara as he took a couple steps forward, "is my best friend's wedding. You're not needed here."

"Maybe you've had too much to drink. Katara invited me here," Jet commented, sitting down next to her until Aang interrupted him impulsively.

"I'm Katara's boyfriend," Katara's head snapped towards him again in shock, while Jet hastily stood up, now seemingly irritated. With his eyes, Aang nodded behind the man while he quickly began approaching him, "Now, get lost."

Before the two could collide, Katara decided to dissolve the situation and got in between them.

"Guys stop it," she placed her hand on both their chests, pushing both away to prevent them from starting something at her best friend's wedding. Jet adhered and took a step back, though it was clear he was still irritated by the glare he was shooting Aang. Gazing at him however, Katara noticed that Aang hadn't moved a single inch as his face remained motionless, staring right back at Jet with a barely concealed anger she didn't think he was capable of. Realising Aang likely wasn't going to listen to her, she decided to work with what she had.

"Jet," she turned to him, urging him to understand. "Give me five minutes, okay?" He looked at her before glancing once again back at Aang until he turned and began lengthening his distance from the two. "Thank you," Katara softly muttered before turning her attention to the uncharacteristically problematic man beside her. "You," she stared deep into his eyes, her confusion and irritation clearly visible in her oceanic orbs in the way they dangerously sparkled, "are not my boyfriend."

His resolve remained undeterred still, even under her scrutiny.

"Then is he?"

Once again, she couldn't hide her surprise as she frowned.

"What's gotten into Aang?" She exasperated, before pointing behind her, "Go say sorry to him."

"I'd rather break his face," Aang muttered dangerously.

Unwilling to sink deeper into this unfamiliar territory, Katara tried to make her escape. Walking past him, she made a beeline for Toph and Zuko who she saw partying in the distance until something Aang said caused her to turn in confusion.

"'The sound of your heart is the most significant sound in my world', huh?"

"What?"

"Is this the guy who sent you that cheap message?" He asked as he approached her, itching to get closer, while she wanted to get away for her own sake. "Not that loser Kai?"

"Yes, Aang," she answered with complete transparency for once. "Jet sent me those messages."

A veil of understanding and hurt glazed over his eyes as he nodded behind him.

"Do you like him?"

Fed up with the situation, Katara took Aang's advice all those years ago as she turned around and walked away attempting to escape the confrontation she so desperately wanted to avoid the day prior as well. Aang however, didn't allow her to avoid him as he chased after her.

"Answer me. Do you like him?"

"What's it matter to you?" She asked, turning around vehemently as she became emotional, her eyes beginning to shine with unshed tears and words holding much more weight with her barely restrained cries.

"It matters. I thought you only drank alcohol with me," he insisted impulsively, blinking in surprise at what he'd just revealed.

"What are you trying to say, Aang?" Katara crossed her arms as she softly glared at him.

"All I'm trying to say is that… you send this 'Jet' guy away?"

"Why?"

He paused for a moment, not to think carefully about what he should say because right at that moment, his heart was doing all the talking, but to prepare for her reaction. "Because I want you to spend all your time with me."

Katara paused for a moment as well, her face remaining mostly emotionless until she sighed heavily before her eyes began to shine once again and voice trembled slightly.

"Aang… I was spending time with Jet because I cannot spend any more time with you." Her chest heaved slightly as she intook and let out sharp breaths. "He's just a friend of mine."

"So, he's not your boyfriend?"

"No, Aang. No!" Katara denied vehemently. "Please, stop this drama. Why don't you understand that if I spend even one more second with you then…"

She hesitated, unsure if she wanted to finish saying what she wanted to say eight years ago. But it was too late now.

"Then what, Katara?"

Pause.

"Then I'll fall in love with you… again," the first gentle breeze of the night caressed her skin beautifully, carrying the tear dropping down her face along with it. "And you won't… again."

She waited as she gauged his reaction, feeling completely vulnerable and open and so unlike herself as she counted each and every breath she took to calm herself. It became difficult to count when he stepped closer, his breath mingling with her's. And it became nigh impossible when he stole her breath as his soft lips brushed against hers, both their eyes shuttering in bliss as they shared their first kiss. He cupped her cheek, tracing the soft skin lining her jaw as she leaned in closer to him, growing even warmer when he wrapped his arm around her waist as he also felt the heat beginning to radiate from her.

She'd never felt more at peace than in that moment, completely safe and sated in his arms. However, the newness of this, the thought that he might also feel the same, something which he didn't feel eight years ago, and the mess this would create - them actually getting together - it forced her to retreat when he broke it off softly. His face was nothing but short of blissful; clarity and realisation swirling within his grey depths even while watching her blushing figure retreating towards their friends.
