Chapter 1: Something in the North…
Okay… this is weird, even for me. Uh, hello. My name is Danny Fenton. But you probably already knew that.
Jazz, that's my older sister, suggested I start doing my own journal entries after what happened in Kentucky, just to chronicle my thoughts or some other such nonsense. I think that's the psychologist in her talking, but I'm giving it a shot.
Since this is only ever going to be seen by me, I may as well be a little more… free to talk, I guess?
Let me at least give and abridged version of my story: parents studied ghosts, accidentally turned Dad's best friend who secretly hated him and had the hots for my mom - eww - into a supervillain, had my older sister then me, built a portal into another plane of existence called the Ghost Zone, had an interest in seeing but my friend Sam convinced me to go inside to take a look, then I got infused with ghostly energy and became the superhero Danny Phantom.
Then my archenemy, their old best friend, eventually cloned me and accidentally created a girl named Danielle, who we adopted after "the incident".
The Disasteroid Incident, where an asteroid made out of some material that's harmful to ghosts… which now that I think about, came out of nowhere… was about to hit the Earth. Turns out the guy who said it'd destroy the planet got his facts wrong, it would have at best destroyed a major city, though I guess the fear of it becoming a huge cloud of dust to block the sun is still a thing.
So, long story short, I lost interest in being a superhero, got rid of my power, Sam gave me a hard time for it, my archenemy ended up lost in space, got my powers back, saved the world, got the girl. Happy ending, right?
Nope.
After a few weeks, a huge rise in people started to think the whole thing was a hoax. I am not kidding. Suddenly, people thought the whole thing was just some elaborate scare. After that, protests happened, deniers and nay-sayers made big scenes on television, even riots happened and some people even vandalized or destroyed some of my statues. It was nuts! I'm honestly not that surprised that some people think it was a hoax.
To quote a movie I still enjoy, a person is smart but people are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals…
I guess in a roundabout way, that brings us to what happened in Kentucky.
We got an email from a man claiming to be named Christian David, and he was being harassed by the supposed Goblins of the Kelly-Hopkinsville Encounter. My mom dismissed the idea entirely, not the least because it obviously had nothing to do with ghosts. Behind her back, I responded to the guy and, with my mom having a family reunion in Kentucky, I used that to my advantage.
I brought my then girlfriend Sam and best friend/former temporary mayor Tucker along.
When we got there...well, it wasn't exactly fun...mostly due to Dad and Aunt Alicia bickering and most of mom's cousins hating him since they blame him for mom moving to the city, not accepting that she left because she wanted to. But that's nothing compared to the so-called food...ham hocks and cooked possum...Gross! But that's nothing compared to the lamb fires Tucker was wolfing down...until he found out exactly what they were. Can't help but find it a little funny though.
Another issue was the feud. Yeah, the McKirks had a feud with their neighbors, the Hackfords, all because both Zeke and Zeb sr were totally into the same girl and blamed the other for what happened...or something like that. To make matters worse, the Hackfords had a daughter named Sally May. She's… admittedly hot, but she's also super clingy and really into the whole love at first sight thing. Even after learning I was in a relationship, she did not stop trying to win me over. Eventually, she seemed to get the message that it wasn't helping and we became friends.
Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said for what else was in Kentucky. Namely, the Goblins.
Those silvery little creeps wanted me in Kentucky so I could phase their ship out of the ground. It turns out they had no intention of invading… but now they want to bring in a fleet to invade out of spite. We talked about how to handle it, but Sam hated the idea that was… more than likely the most likely we'd go with. She went to them to warn them, but they laughed at her for telling them, making it clear they don't have any interest in a peaceful solution.
After that… when it was just me and the crew on the ship who weren't buried in the caverns. I… I did what was the only thing that could stop them.
I'm almost feeling better, though not just for that.
Sam and I? Well, we broke up… I realized we're not ready to be anything more than friends. Will we be a couple again someday? Probably, probably not, but for now… I'm just content to be back home.
But after we came home, I learned who it was who sent those emails. He says to call him Rich and that he's MIB. He also said he'll pop in once in a while…
It's been a week, no sign of him…
"Danny!" Danielle's voice called out from below.
He pulled away from the computer and looked at the door.
"Yeah?!" He responded.
"You coming?!" She called out.
"Yeah… hang on!" He said as he saved and closed the file.
He had promised they'd spend the day together this Saturday, especially since their parents were dealing with a lawsuit over the time Jack caused some destruction to Nasty Burger during the whole "million dollar bounty" Danny Phantom had for a time.
After his break up with Sam, and his desire to not meet someone, he figured a little time with Danielle would do him good.
"Too bad Tucker can't join us…" He said to himself.
At the Foley Residence
"Tucker?" Mrs. Foley knocked on the door. "Are you playing online games again?"
"No…" He was heard moaning.
She shrugged and returned to the kitchen.
Tucker looked at his laptop, which had a photo of prepared lamb fries. He broke into tears over learning just what his new favorite dish actually was.
The only thing that stopped his crying was his face turning green.
At Fenton Works
Danny locked the door after he and Danielle went through the front door.
With that done, the two nodded and headed out.
Little did they know, someone was watching from far enough to not trigger their ghost senses. This is one of Danny's many foes.
"Dipstick and his new duet partner going out for the day? Well, not for long. Soon as I get a chance, I'll rock their world." Ember said with a grin.
Before she could go, a certain someone landed behind her, on the roof.
"What are you doing here?! He's my prey! You can take the smaller one, I don't need a cheap knockoff!" Skulker stated.
"Ugh. Why are you here? It's my turn to make a move on him." Ember stated.
"We didn't draw straws! The Ghost Child's pelt is mine to claim!" Skulker shouted.
"Oh please, you couldn't even find a decent place for hot dogs, so how would you be able to hunt him?" Ember questioned with her arms crossed.
Skulker snarled at her.
"Well, you should stay out of my way!" Skulker shouted before flying off.
Ember rolled her eyes before looking to see Danny and Danielle disappeared and groaning.
"Metal headed moron…" She muttered before flying off.
Elsewhere, further North
A young woman was leaning on a tree, panting hard.
She was a long-haired blonde with blue eyes who wore a red snow jacket with a blue coat underneath. She had darker blue pants and black boots underneath. She also wore pink snow gloves and a red beanie.
She was surrounded by snow and trees, looking from side to side in a panic. She was sweating, gulping before panting hard.
"Where is it? Where is it? Where is it?" She asked under her breath.
Realizing how loud her breathing must be, she placed a hand on her mouth to quiet herself.
At first, there was nothing but dead silence. That's when she heard it.
"Babe?" A familiar male voice asked.
She gasped.
"Shawn? No…" She said under her breath.
"Babe? Come out, Laura…" The male voice asked, having an odd, almost robotic tone to th voice.
She knew this isn't who she called Shawn. The voice had something wrong to it.
"It's not him… It's not him…" She said, sliding slightly down the tree, quivering in fear.
"BABE!" The voice now went, sounding angry.
She couldn't tell where the voice was coming from, only that it was close.
Fear now taking hold, she decided to make a break for it. She started running for it, only to be slowed down thanks to the snow being at near knee level.
"Leave me alone!" She cried out. "Leave me alone!"
As she started running, a figure emerged from behind the tree she leaned on. A tall, lanky figure who was partially blocked out by the shading of the trees.
Laura looked back and saw it. She couldn't see the features of the monster that lured her, only that it bared yellow, crooked, predatory teeth in a nasty grin.
"BABE!" It went, the voice fluctuating from Shawn's voice to a more guttural one as it ran after her.
Somehow, it ran on top of the snow, its weight not making it sink as it started to gain in on her.
"No! No please!" She cried out as the creature tackled her.
It pushed her down into the snow before lifting her by the shoulders and looking her in the eye. She looked back into pale eyes sunken into the skull, giving it an almost empty-eyed glare.
The creature readied its teeth when a snowball hit it in the head.
"Get away from her!" A familiar voice called out.
The creature looked back to see a tall Caucasian male in a brown jacket, white snow pants, brown boots and a black trapper hat. He also aimed a shotgun at the beast.
It only gave a hiss before dropping Laura. Then, with unseen quickness, it cross the distance between it and the man, backhanding the gun out of his hands before backhanding him far enough that he hit a tree with his shoulder, causing a pained yelp.
"Shawn!" Laura cried out.
The creature responsible ignored her, walking into the shade of the trees where it picked up the man it injured, baring teeth to take a bite.
Before it could do so, it stopped, then looked up towards the mountain.
For Laura and Shawn, two college students who had just been engaged and decided to take this trip to celebrate, the world froze. One trying to reach her love, the other in the hands of a monster, they watched as this creature that seemed like it would eat them be distracted by something.
After what felt like an eternity, the creature looked to Shawn and roared with a high-pitched sound before dropping him and running on all fours away, in the direction it was looking.
With the creature gone, Laura finally reached Shawn.
"Shawn? Baby?" She asks.
"My shoulder… I think that thing dislocated it…" He managed to say.
Gasping for air, Laura only looked towards where the creature went in confusion over why it didn't finish the job.
She had one thing on her mind.
"Was that thing…" She panted. "... the wendigo?"
As she said this, she didn't see a snowy white owl was observing them, watching with some intent before flying away.
Part 2 of Vs The Paranormal.
Special Thanks to Flower Princess11.
For this one, I've done a bit of research on the titular monster. I might have to do some creative liberties since a lot has been added to the mythos, some likely not accurate since, every since 2001, modern depictions make it look like it has the skull of a deer for a head. I've read this description has more to do with a similar creature called Wechuge, though for this story, we can probably assume they're closely related.
In any case, more to come.
