"Listen FP, I fell in love with you. I knew it was only temporary. I knew Gladys was coming home. But that year I spent helping you with Jughead… I made the mistake and fell for you. We both agreed it was all temporary. I know that. I've always know that," Lola began to choke up. She held down her tears defiantly, refusing to shed any in front of him. "But I let my emotions get the best of me and I made a mistake. I had to leave. I couldn't sit back and watch the two of you together. But that's on me. Not you. I brought this on myself so I fixed it. I'm happy for the two of you. Believe me, I am. I'll never do anything to ruin that. That's why last night was a mistake. We shouldn't have… I should have..." Her eyes betrayed her, welling up with tears. "Congratulations on the new baby. I really am happy for you. Both of you. I," she stopped herself. "I have to go. I'm sorry."
A loud pound at the door of her hotel room caused Lola to jump, snapping her back from the memory of the last time she spoke to FP which also happened to be at her father's funeral. She leapt off the bed, stopping at the mirror to check her hair that was already pulled back into a messy bun. She was dressed in a red tank top and black short that shows off most of her legs, namely the large black and green serpent tattoo that was wrapped around her upper right thigh. She peeked out of the peep hole and rolled her eyes though not at all surprised by who was standing on the other side. "LL," FP yelled from the other side as he pounded on the door again. "How on earth did you find me," Lola asked as she opened the door. He didn't wait to be invited before making his way inside. "There are only two hotels in Riverdale. And I didn't think you would be staying at the Five Seasons. Though, you are some big shot lawyer now so it was a 50-50 shot."
"You could have just called you know," she said shutting the door behind him. "Well, I would rather talk in person," he replied taking a seat on the couch in her small suite. "You know I'm limited to what I can tell you FP." Lola took two beers from the mini refrigerator, handing him one, "attorney/client privilege and all." She took a seat in the small recliner to the left of him. FP twisted open his beer taking a long swig. "Divorce papers," he sighed. "She is serving me with divorce papers? You know she never said a word to about this right? Shit, I haven't even really spoken to her at all." He ran his fingers through his hair before taking another sip. "You would think you would have at least talked to me about it before serving me with papers."
Lola took a deep breath, opening her own beer and draining half of it. "I know. And I told her as much. But she wouldn't. Said it would just be easier this way. But trust me, I did try to convince her otherwise. She wanted no part of it," In truth, Lola knew that was only part of the story. In reality, she knew Gladys wasn't ready to explain the true reason for wanting a divorce. Though Lola tried to explain to her that it would come out eventually and that she was only stalling, Gladys still refused.
"How did she even get in touch with you," he asked making eye contact with her for the first time since he showed up.
"She reached out from Toledo through the local Serpents in my area. I'm not heavily involved with them but I help them out from time to time. They said she asked for me by name and when I called, she told me she wanted to file for divorce and she needed my help. I assumed she still didn't know and I couldn't turn her down without her finding out why, so I let her hire me. My only request was that I be allowed to serve you the papers. I thought it might be easier to take from me than a random process server. I swear I had no intention of doing anything other than serving you papers."
"I know you didn't. That's just not who you are, Lo. I'm just surprised Gladys asked for you specifically. To be honest, after your old man died, you name wasn't brought up much. Not by her anyways," he shook his head. "For what it's worth, kiss aside I am glad it was you and not a stranger I suppose. That may not have ended well for me or them otherwise."
Lola smiled a her beer before taking another swig. "I'm well aware of your attitude problem FP."
